A novel and practical CaCl 2 salt templating method is used to tune the pore size of carbon materials from calcium lignosulfonate. In-situ crystalized CaCl 2 particles serve as templates for mesopores and as carbonization substrates. Hierarchical carbons are constructed using coupled SiO 2 spheres and CaCl 2 templates. The SiO 2 spheres improve the pore size assigned to CaCl 2 particles and high CaCl 2 :lignin mass ratios benefit large CaCl 2 crystals to improve the size of mesopores. The porous carbons are used as supports of molybdenum carbide (MoC) with C-C and C-O cleavage activity for Kraft lignin decomposition into aromatic monomers. The results show that MoC over porous carbon supports achieves the highest aromatic yield of 0.716 g/g Kraft lignin and exhibits high stability of aromatic yields. Suitable pore size for lignin macromolecule diffusion significantly enhances the catalytic performance of molybdenum carbide.

Bio-depolymerized the lignin macromolecules into low molecular lignin-derived aromatic compounds satisfies the requirement for carbon dioxide peaking and is also one of the important ways to realize lignin valorization. Coriolopsis trogii is a kind of less reported lignin-degrading white-rot fungus. The degradability of a self-isolated C. trogii TS01 on industrial lignins, including enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) and Kraft lignin (KL), was investigated in this paper. The results indicated that EHL could be used as an efficient carbon source to promote the cell growth and ligninolytic enzyme secretion of C. trogii TS01. Compared with using 2% glucose as carbon source, 1% EHL plus 1% glucose would increase the maximum cell dry weight, laccase activity, and manganese-dependent peroxidase activity of C. trogii TS01 by 24.8%, 164.1%, and 200%, respectively. However, the cell growth and ligninolytic enzyme secretion would be significantly inhibited in the case of 1% KL plus 1% glucose used as carbon source. As a result, at the 12th day of fermentation, the degradation rates of EHL and KL were 50.6% and 5.7%, respectively. The UV and FTIR analysis indicated that after been fermented by C. trogii TS01, S-unit content in EHL was decreased by 12.5% but G-unit content was increased by 53.7%. In conclusion, the research of this paper will provide a promising solution for the valorization of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin since the high biodegradation rate of lignin and high activity of ligninolytic enzymes could be achieved simultaneously.

Catalytic upgrading lignin-derived bio-oil with high oxygen content to directly usable transport fuel through hydrotreatment is highly desirable, but still remains a challenge. In this work, a series of Co-based catalysts were synthetized using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as a structure-directing agent and lignin as a renewable carbon precursor via a simple hydrothermal method. Among these catalysts, Co/C-EL-0.5–500 showed the best catalytic hydrotreatment activity, affording 100% guaiacol conversion with 90% cyclohexanol yield under the conditions of 240 °C, 0 MPa N 2 and 4 h. According to the characterization results of XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, ICP, NH3-TPD and XPS, the excellent performance of Co/C-EL-0.5–500 was attributed to large specific surface area, small Co particle size, and optimal acidity. The possible reaction pathway was proposed based on the product distribution. In addition, isopropanol was used as H-donor instead of extra hydrogen, and we hope that it could provide a novel strategy for bio-oil upgrading.

The conversion of abundant lignin was of great significance for the utilization of biomass resources. In this study, lignin sulfonate (LS) was selected as a carbon-based support, which was successfully introduced into the NiCo-MOF structure. A series of lignin and MOF hybrid catalysts (Ni n Co-MOF-LS) with varying metal ratios of Ni and Co were synthesized via the hydrothermal method. Subsequently, the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin-derived dimers was conducted over a range of Ni n Co-MOF-LS, with the impact of calcination temperature and lignin addition in the catalysts taken into account. The selective conversion of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) and other lignin dimers was achieved over the Ni n Co-MOF-LS catalyst with isopropanol serving as the hydrogen donor solvent in a nitrogen atmosphere. The Ni/Co metal ratio and calcination temperature were found to have a significant impact on the catalytic performance. Through a comprehensive investigation of various reaction parameters, including temperature, pressure, reaction time, and reaction solvent, it was determined that the catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenolysis of BPE to cycloalkane and cyclohexanol. The optimal reaction conditions (240 °C, 4 h, 3 MPa N 2 ) were found to be conducive to the effective conversion of BPE into methylcyclohexane and cyclohexanol. The combination of lignin and metal-organic framework represented a novel approach to the utilization of lignin resources and the upgrading of biomass-derived chemicals.

The inherent structural rigidity of lignin poses a significant challenge to its direct hydrogenation to produce aromatic compounds, requiring harsh reaction conditions. In this study, microwave-assisted hydrothermal liquefication was employed to rapidly generate raw bio-oil under mild conditions, coupled with an in-situ hydrogenation strategy to upgrade its quality. A series of lignin substrates were characterized to establish the relationship between lignin characteristics and aromatic products. Grass lignin can produce low molecular weight bio-oil in high yields (50.4–60.7 %) within 30 min at 180 °C, which is attributed to the abundance of cleavable β-O-4 linkages in its uniform structure. In contrast, softwood lignin with abundant guaiacyl (G) units possessed a robust thermal stability, resulting in a low monomer yield, but a high selectivity to G-type products (97 %). The raw bio-oil was further upgraded through in-situ hydrogenation with Pd catalysts. Low reaction temperatures (60–100 °C) favored the hydrogenation of aromatic aldehydes and ketones to their alcohol products, while high temperatures (100–220 °C) promoted the deep hydrogenation of aromatic side chains to alkyl products. Besides, an upgraded bio-oil with a higher heating value (29.8 MJ/kg) was obtained. Furthermore, the hydrogenation mechanism was investigated through the kinetics of simulated bio-oils. The activation energy follows the order: dimer β-O-4 linkage < monomer aldehyde group < ketone group < C C linkage, which is consistent with the hydrogenation kinetics observed in real lignin bio-oil. Overall, this study highlights the impact of lignin characteristics on subsequent conversion and also enhances our understanding of the complex depolymerization/hydrogenation mechanisms during lignin upgrading.

Conventional asphalt binder undergoes rapid thermal oxidative aging during construction, which accelerates performance deterioration and reduces the environmental resistance of asphalt binders. To address this challenge, this study investigates five types of lignin, including alkali lignin, dealkalized lignin, sodium lignosulfonate, calcium lignosulfonate and enzymatic lignin (EL), as bio-based modifiers to enhance the aging resistance of asphalt binders. The relationships between the physicochemical characteristics of lignin and the performance of modified binders were thoroughly examined using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The results show that EL exhibits the most effective anti-aging performance due to its low molecular weight, high phenolic hydroxyl content and superior dispersibility. FTIR and GPC analyses confirm that EL suppresses carbonyl and sulfoxide formation and limits molecular weight growth through radical scavenging and sacrificial degradation mechanisms. Moreover, 1H NMR results reveal that EL helps preserve molecular integrity by reducing chain scission and oxidation. This study clarifies the anti-aging mechanism of lignin-modified asphalt and provides a theoretical foundation for developing high-performance and sustainable bio-based binders.

Lignin, a dominant component of plant-derived soil organic matter (SOM), serves as a critical biomarker for tracking carbon stabilization and turnover in terrestrial ecosystems. While the CuO oxidation method remains the gold-standard technique for lignin characterization due to its superior specificity and capacity for simultaneous quantification of lignin content and structural composition, conventional protocols relying on silyl derivatives of lignin oxidation products (LOPs) face critical limitations. These include matrix impurity-driven suppression of silylation yields, inherent instability of silyl derivatives of lignin phenols, and prohibitive costs of specialized reagents. We developed a groundbreaking analytical framework utilizing methyl derivatives of lignin phenols, enabled by a room-temperature phase-transfer catalytic system (tetrabutylammonium hydroxide/CH₂Cl₂/CH₃I). This strategy integrates diethyl ether extraction with silica-gel column chromatography for LOP purification, achieving exceptional recovery rates (72–92 %) and reproducibility (RSD < 6 %) for a standard mixture of lignin phenols. When applied to soil samples, the protocol demonstrated rapid processing time (3.5 h/sample), good reproducibility (RSD < 10 %), and robust tolerance to soil-derived impurities, with spiked recovery rates exceeding 85 % for most lignin phenols (by spiking a standard mixture of lignin phenols to the LOPs made from soil samples prior to methylation reaction). Comparative analyses revealed 2.0–5.2-fold enhancements in lignin yield over conventional C 18 -SPE and solvent extraction methods, underscoring superior analytical performance. The protocol's cost-effectiveness (~10 % of traditional methods), minimal chromatographic interference (negligible peak tailing after 3000 injections), and adaptability to diverse matrices establish it as a transformative tool for lignin characterization in a variety of geochemical samples.

Highly efficient conversion of lignin into value-added chemicals and materials is trapped in the inevitable cleavage of β-O-4 linkages and formation of highly condensed structures with deep colors during lignin isolation. Here, we develop a trifunctional choline chloride/glyoxylic acid (ChCl/GA) binary deep eutectic solvent with a π-π conjugate structure and moderate acidity for the fast isolation of light-colored lignin with near proto-structures (exceeding 88% of delignification ratio for 1 hour). The synergetic interaction of GA and ChCl substantially reduced Gibbs free energy of acetal reaction and thoroughly captured reactive intermediates, precisely activating the following key functions: stabilizing β-O-4 linkages, inhibiting condensation reaction, and shielding –OH groups. These enabled efficient isolation of uncondensed, abundant β-O-4 linkage (45.80/100 C9; 79% retention) and light-colored lignin. A near-theoretical yield of aromatic monomers upon depolymerization and high performances as adhesives for lignocellulosic bioplastics were achieved. This work unleashes the valorization potential of lignin by a relatively green and fast strategy for sustainable biorefineries.

Understanding the molecular mechanism of lignin nanoparticle (LNP) formation will precisely instruct its functionalization, which is of importance for biomass valorization. Trial-and-error approaches for mechanistic research at the molecular level are extremely difficult and resource intensive. Here we have revealed that the intra-molecular interactions of lignin aromatic rings were the internal force driving the aggregation of lignin into LNPs by combining molecular simulation with experimental methods. A quantitative aromatic interaction correlated with the configuration distribution of lignin dimer and LNP yields was also developed for guiding the synthesis and functionalization of LNPs. A cellulose-derived solvent, γ-valerolactone (GVL), was then screened out to sustain lignin molecules’ intramolecular stacking (−5.54 kJ mol−1) into a spherical nucleus for the growth of a uniform and stable lignin nanosphere during solvent shifting. With the assistance of the LNP formation mechanism, lignin could successfully stabilize in situ generated gold nanoparticles with excellent photothermal performance during the production of LNPs in a GVL/water solution. The newly proposed mechanism will provide an important theoretical basis for upgrading lignin to value-added biomaterials in a green and facile pathway.

Efficient depolymerization of C–O linkages is essential for converting lignin into fuels and higher value-added chemicals. In this work, CoRuP/SiO2, an amorphous Ru-Co phosphide composite, was fabricated for the efficient hydrogenolysis of ether linkages. The 4–O–5 andα–O–4 linkages containing lignin-related compounds, such as diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, 3-methyl diphenyl ether, and dibenzyl ether, are selected as representatives of linkages in lignin. Under mild conditions, Ru-containing metallic phosphides have high-performance for the catalytic depolymerization of C–O linkages. Compared with other catalysts, CoRuP/SiO2shows an outstanding selectivity for benzene and excellent efficiency in depolymerizing diphenyl ethers, yielding only a small amount of by-products. Furthermore, the total acidity shows a linear relationship with the hydrogenolysis reactivity in cleaving aromatic ether bonds. The mechanisms for the catalytic hydrogenolysis of 4–O–5 andα–O–4 bonds over CoRuP/SiO2are proposed. Moreover, two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis demonstrates that CoRuP/SiO2could effectively depolymerize C–O bonds of lignin. These dominant hydrogenolysis products from lignin have excellent potential in the production of high value-added drugs or pharmaceutical intermediates. The hydrogenolysis of lignin can be a highly efficient alternative to the existing method of lignin utilization. Keywords:hydrogenolysis;C–O linkages;metallic phosphides;reaction pathway

Co-self-assembly of lignin oligomers together with other structurally similar molecules can provide composite particles with functional properties for specific applications. Herein, tannin was co-self-assembled for the first time with lignin oligomers into novel lignin–tannin particles (L x T y ), induced by a dual driven force with π–π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonds. Abundant ortho -phenolic hydroxyl groups of tannin cause the efficient adsorption and partial reduction of Pd 2+ ions (36.7%) by L x T y (>99%) to obtain Pd/L x T y with highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles , thereby avoiding the need for surfactants or reducing agents. Aldehyde groups of lignin-derived aldehydes could preferentially interact with phenolic hydroxyl groups on the hydrophilic shell of Pd/L x T y . Then, mitigated active hydrogen atoms on the L x T y support during the hydrogen spillover process induced a H-shift to C of −C O through a water bridge with low energy barrier and consequently selective hydrogenation to obtain lignin-derived alcohols at 30 °C.

Preparing coal water slurry from coal gasification wastewater as gasification/combustion feedstock offers a promising strategy for wastewater management and resource recovery. The primary challenge lies in optimizing slurry formulation to accommodate wastewater as the aqueous medium. This study demonstrated that carboxyalkylated lignin derivatives, i.e., biomass-based aromatic polymers, were effective dispersants for generating coal gasification wastewater slurry (CGWS). The alkyl chain lengths of carboxyalkylated lignin derivatives significantly influenced their molecular characteristics and, consequently, the physicochemical properties of the resulting slurry. Fundamentally, the dispersion performance of lignin derivatives and sodium methylene dinaphthalene sulfonate (NNO), as a commonly used dispersant for the slurry, was different. While NNO promoted dispersion via increasing electrostatic repulsion, the lignin derivatives promoted the slurry formulation primarily via grafting molecular structure. Among the tested lignin derivatives, CPr (carboxybutylated lignin) required the lowest dosage (0.20 wt%) and increased the solid concentration of the slurry from 50.42 wt% (NNO-CGWS) to 52.81 wt% (CPr-CGWS) at an apparent viscosity of 1000 mPa·s, while reducing its pseudo-plasticity. Additionally, lignin derivatives increased the calorific value of CGWS by 0.191 kcal/g using CPr at a dosage of 0.20 wt%. This work establishes carboxyalkylated lignin, particularly CPr, as a highly effective and eco-friendly dispersant for preparing value-added CGWS from industrial wastewater.
