This study developed a “one-pot” three-stage process using a “multifunctional” deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing choline chloride (ChCl), ethylene glycol (EG), and protonic acids for the production of phenolic monomers, furfural, and glucose. In the first stage, the DES effectively dissolved over 70 % of lignin and 78 % of hemicellulose while preserving aryl ether bonds in lignin due to the grafting of EG onto the aryl ether bonds. Concurrently, the retention of a near-quantitative amount of cellulose led to a glucose yield of >80 % after enzymatic saccharification. In the next stage, the DES enabled the catalytic depolymerization of lignin using a Ru/C catalyst at mild temperatures and atmospheric pressure, eliminating the need for an external hydrogen source and yielding G/S-propyl and G/S-propenyl monomers at 13.8 %. Additionally, the ratio of ChCl to EG in the DES could regulate the composition and selectivity of the phenolic monomers. Following this, the hemicellulose sugars dissolved in the DES underwent catalytic hydrolysis in a DES/water system, achieving a furfural yield of 36.4 % under optimized conditions. The results of this study offer important insights into the valorization of lignocellulose in “one-pot” under mild conditions, thereby advancing the field of biorefining.

Acid pretreatment is considered as one of the most promising pretreatment strategies. However, the operation temperature of acid pretreatment is commonly higher, and acid pretreatment is difficult to remove lignin. Herein, a novel pretreatment strategy (dilute sulfuric acid coupling K 2 S 2 O 8 (DA-PDS) pretreatment) was proposed to remove lignin at lower temperature. The feasibility of DA-PDS pretreatment was predicted by means of density functional theory (DFT). Then, the optimal operation conditions of DA-PDS pretreatment were studied. Temperature was proved to be the most critical factor affecting the DA-PDS pretreatment. The optimal reaction conditions of DA-PDS pretreatment were 5 % DA and 6 % PDS at 80 °C for 2 h. The operation temperature was 40 °C lower than common acid pretreatment. On this condition, the cellulose content and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency by DA-PDS pretreatment were about 59 % and 73 %, which were 11 % and 13 % higher than that of DA pretreatment, respectively. In addition, this study revealed the mechanism of DA-PDS pretreatment. DA not only accelerated radical generation rate, but also improved the contact probability between radical and lignin. Radicals generated by PDS destroyed the structure of lignin. This made DA more easily to remove hemicellulose . This work presented a novel and energy-saving strategy for lignocellulose pretreatment.

Pretreatment centers on facilitating the efficient removal of lignin for enhancing enzymatic saccharification but difficulty avoids the formation of the condensed lignin. However, the specific effects of the condensed lignin on cellulose properties are still not clear. Herein, a recyclable lignin-derived phenol-assisted ternary eutectic solvent (DES), with the ability to make lignin's proclivity towards condensation, is proposed for enhancing lignocellulose fractionation and enzymatic hydrolysis. The effect of the DES types, molar ratio, temperature, and time on lignocellulosic fractionation and cellulose structure was explored comprehensively. Under the optimum conditions (choline chloride/phenol/formic acid DES with a molar ratio of 1:0.05:2, 120 °C, 6 h), the DES pretreatment promoted the removal of lignin (76.36 %) and hemicelluloses (85.09 %). Meanwhile, the glucose and xylose yield of the cellulose-rich residue by enzymatic hydrolysis dramatically enhanced to 99.51 % and 76.72 %, which was 4 times and 12 times higher than that of the raw material, respectively. The increased efficiency was due to the introduction of phenol to efficiently promote lignin dissolution, enhancing the accessibility, surface area, and crystallinity of cellulose. After five recycling processes, the recycled DES still preserved an ultrahigh efficiency in lignocellulosic fractionation and enzymatic saccharification. This green phenols-assisted DES pretreatment opens a novel avenue for efficient lignocellulosic fractionation and cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis.

A novel lignocellulosic aerogel, MT-LCA, was successfully prepared from MT by undergoing partial dissolution in an ionic liquid, coagulation in water, freezing in liquid nitrogen, and subsequent freeze-drying. The MT-LCA preserves its original honeycomb-like porous structure, and the newly formed micropores contribute to increased porosity and specific surface area. FT-IR analysis reveals that MT, after dissolution and coagulation, experiences no chemical reactions. However, a change in the crystalline structure of cellulose is observed, transitioning from cellulose I to cellulose II. Both MT and MT-LCA demonstrate a quasi-second-order kinetic process during methylene blue adsorption, indicative of chemical adsorption. The Langmuir model proves to be more appropriate for characterizing the methylene blue adsorption process. Both adsorbents exhibit monolayer adsorption, and their effective adsorption sites are uniformly distributed. The higher porosity, nanoscale micropores, and larger pore size in MT-LCA enhance its capillary force, providing efficient directional transport performance. Consequently, the prepared MT-LCA displays exceptional compressive performance and efficient directional transport capabilities, making it well-suited for applications requiring high compressive performance and selective directional transport.

Utilizing renewable resources as substitutes for fossil resources is a crucial pathway towards achieving sustainability, with biomass conversion being a significant avenue. Catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose represents an effective approach to biomass conversion, wherein lignin is selectively separated from lignocellulose and depolymerized into high-value aromatic monomers within the reaction system. However, existing technologies face challenges such as low product selectivity and difficult separation. Herein, we employ oxidative catalytic fractionation (OCF) using polyoxometalates (POMs) as catalysts and a methanol/water mixture as solvent to directly oxidize and catalyze lignin in pine wood lignocellulose into aromatic compounds under an O 2 atmosphere, while preserving cellulose for subsequent utilization. The process yields up to 22.5 % aromatic monomers, with vanillin and methyl vanillate as the main products (calculated based on Klason lignin). Our approach provides a novel perspective for achieving highly selective oxidative fractionation and depolymerization of lignin, thus contributing to the valorization of lignocellulose.

Efficient fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass offers the possibility of converting it into high value-added products. This paper presents a strategy for one-pot fractionation of eucalyptus in an AlCl 3 -catalyzed γ-valerolactone (GVL)/H 2 O system. Under the suitable conditions, 90.7% of hemicellulose and 92.5% of lignin were dissolved in the aqueous and organic phases, respectively, while 86.2% of cellulose was retained. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose-rich solid residue resulted in a 86.2% yield of glucose. In addition, 82% of the original xylan was recovered from the aqueous phase as xylose and low levels of inhibitors were generated. The recovered lignin appeared as spherical nanoparticles with high purity (95.2%), low dispersity (1.32), low molar mass, making it well-suited for biomaterials preparation. The proposed strategy is novel and promising for lignocellulosic biomass fractionation, which improves the downstream processability and facilitates the complete exploitation of biomass, thus providing a viable route for biorefinery.

The insufficient of lignocellulose degradation enzymes, such as cellulase and hemicellulase, is the major obstacle that hinders the bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass to monosaccharides, especially during the woody biomass hydrolysis process. The addition of additives has received significant attention due to their enhancement of the enzymatic degradation efficiency of lignocellulose. In the present study, a combination of organic alcohols and a biosurfactant could synergistically enhance the saccharification of the cellulose substrate of Avicel, as well as that of pretreated poplar. Results showed that compound additives can greatly improve the conversion rate of enzymatic hydrolysis. The combination of 0.1% (v/v) n-decanol and 1% (v/v) sophorolipid dramatically increased the poplar enzymatic conversion rate from 17.9% to 85%, improving it by 67.1%. Enzyme-richHypocreasp. W63was fermented to obtain beta-glucosidase (BGL) and xylanase (XYL), which were used as auxiliary enzymes during enzymatic hydrolysis. It was found that the effects of such a combination of additives improved the filter paper activity, stability, and longevity, helping in the recovery of the cellulase cocktail. The compound additives associated with the commercial cellulase andHypocreasp. W63enzyme solution formed an excellent formula for improving the stability of BGL and XYL. The results provide insight into compound additives and the use of a cellulase and auxiliary enzyme cocktail to improve enzymatic hydrolysis for lignocellulose conversion into biofuels. Keywords:woody biomass;organic alcohols;biosurfactant;compound additives;enzymatic hydrolysis

Traditional lignocellulose-based composite films, due to the random arrangement of the matrix and lubricating domains, fail to establish effective load-transfer networks and continuous lubrication pathways, thereby exhibiting inferior mechanical and tribological properties. Inspired by the ordered multilayer structure of nacre, highly dispersible graphene was prepared via intercalation and exfoliation using 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid and subsequently blended with lignocellulose to form a crosslinked “brick-mortar” network. A nacre-mimetic multilayer composite film was then fabricated through vacuum-assisted directional deposition. Compared with LC, the LCIGP exhibits a simultaneous enhancement in mechanical strength (90.8 MPa), toughness (5.56 MJ/m 3 ), and self-lubricating properties (coefficient of friction of 0.106), with its tensile strength up by 58.7% and toughness by 71.6%, together with a 69.3% reduction in friction coefficient. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the ionic liquid-functionalized graphene strengthened interfacial interactions with the lignocellulose matrix and increased the number of hydrogen bonds, with the simulated mechanical and tribological properties confirming the experimental results and providing further molecular-level understanding of the reinforcement and self-lubrication mechanisms.

The severe pollution, high cost and the limited functionality constrain the agricultural mulch film extensive development. To address these issues, a low-cost, eco-friendly, and multifunctional biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol-based mulch film (PUCH) was designed with acid-hydrolyzed and hydrothermally pretreated corncob (CC) lignocellulose as reinforcing fillers, crosslinked by glutaraldehyde, urea as fertilizer, and glycerol as plasticizer. Compared with the control sample of PU-0, PUCH-20 exhibited the highest toughness, tensile strength and elongation, which increased by 92.82%, 80.54% and 51.37%, respectively. On the other hand, the PUCH mulch film also demonstrated the improved water resistance, thermal insulation performance, thermal stability and biodegradability. Furthermore, the PUCH-40 mulch film presented outstanding UV-shielding of UVC (92.1%), UVB (95.6%) and UVA (96.9%), and the thermal insulation performance was promoted by nearly 10 °C compared to the blank sample without covering film. Additionally, the PUCH mulch films showed better growth pattern compared with the commercial polyethylene mulch film. The degradation rate of PUCH-40 reached 40.10% after 100th days. These results indicate this work develops an innovative, green and efficient strategy to design high-performance degradable mulch film to promote crop growth in the field of sustainable agriculture.

A sustainable and integrated biorefinery strategy was achieved by a facile biphasic system, ferric trichloride (FeCl 3 ) solution assisted by methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), yielding multiple products: furfural, sugars, and lignin nano-particles simultaneously. For the highest yield of furfural, the conditions were optimized resulting in 75.55% and over 69.38% of the yields from xylose and some typical biomasses respectively. Both the catalyst and MIBK can be recycled. Eucalyptus was lucubrated on the valorizations of three major-components with 75.18% of furfural yield, 97.54% of cellulase digestibility from the residue and lignin nano-particles. Meanwhile, the regularities of biomass degradation under this biphasic system were summarized as well as high digestibility which was resulted by hemicellulose and lignin removal in cooperation with the amount of the cellulase binding sites. Based on the proposed biorefinery strategy, 65.82% of the initial mass can be valorized into high-value end-products.

Lignin-based Lig-SA-CS enabled hydrogel-mediated compost bioaugmentation. • Lig-SA-CS showed progressive disintegration under dynamic thermal conditions. • Hydrogel encapsulation enhanced lignocellulose transformation and HA formation. • Precursor and 2D-COS revealed stage-dependent humification. A Lig-SA-CS hydrogel previously developed from DES-isolated corn-straw lignin was further evaluated in this study as a bio-based carrier for the co-encapsulation of Bacillus subtilis and Kosakonia cowanii during composting. The hydrogel showed progressive temperature-responsive structural changes, remaining relatively stable at 30–40 ℃ while undergoing swelling, structural weakening, and partial disintegration under elevated-temperature exposure. Composting results indicated that the hydrogel-encapsulated treatment (T2) maintained thermophilic conditions (>50 °C) for approximately 16 days, with the thermophilic phase ending around day 18 and exhibited greater moisture retention. Consequently, T2 reached the selected maturity-related thresholds (C/N < 15 and GI > 80%) by day 28, earlier than the free-bacteria treatment (T1, 35 days) and the control (CK, 42 days). Enhanced cellulase, LiP, MnP, and Lac activities in the T2 group were associated with improved lignocellulose transformation and increased formation of reducing sugars and polyphenols. FTIR-2D-COS analysis indicated a sequential structural evolution in T2, with lignin-derived aromatic structures responding earlier, followed by later responses of polysaccharide-related structures. Microbial community analysis identified 11 key taxa in T2, whose network positions and environmental associations suggested potential involvement in lignocellulose transformation and humification. Overall, the Lig-SA-CS-mediated bioaugmentation strategy enhanced lignocellulose transformation and humic acid formation, providing a promising material-assisted approach for the valorization of agricultural organic wastes and the production of humified compost products.
