Printing and dyeing wastewater can cause serious environmental pollutant and must be treated to meet the emission standards before discharge. In this study, we report a method to prepare nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) particle-immobilized cotton (nZVI@cotton) fabrics assisted by polydopamine (PDA) deposition using cotton fabrics as the substrate. The mechanical property tests of cotton fabric revealed a significant improvement in the breaking strength after deposition of PDA. The pollutant removal capability of nZVI@cotton fabric was evaluated using rhodamine B and Cr(VI) as models. The decolorization efficiency of rhodamine B could be up to 79.45% and Cr(VI) removal efficiency was 70.74% within 60 min, respectively. In addition, the iron content, different nZVI@cotton fabric system, the effect of pollutant composition and reusability of nZVI@cotton fabric were systematically investigated. Results showed that nZVI@cotton fabric prepared with the assistance of PDA was a kind of comparable wastewater purification material with the advantages of high removal efficiency to rhodamine B and Cr(VI) ions and easy to be recycled.

While nanoscale zero-valent iron modified biochar (nZVI-BC) have been widely investigated for the removal of heavy metals , the corrosion products of nZVI and their interaction with heavy metals have not been revealed yet. In this paper, nZVI-BC was synthesized and applied for the removal of Cr(VI). Batch experiments indicated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) fit Langmuir isotherm, with the maximum removal capacity at 172.4 mg/g at pH 2.0. SEM-EDS, BET, XRD , FT-IR, Raman and XPS investigation suggested that reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was the major removal mechanism. pH played an important role on the corrosion of nZVI-BC, at pH 4.5 and 2.0, FeOOH and Fe 3 O 4 were detected as the major iron oxide , respectively. Therefore, FeOOH-BC and Fe 3 O 4 -BC were further prepared and their interaction with Cr were studied. Combining with DFT calculations, it revealed that Fe 3 O 4 has higher adsorption capacity and was responsible for the effective removal of Cr(VI) through electrostatic attraction and reduction under acidic conditions. However, Fe 3 O 4 will continue to convert to the more stable FeOOH, which is the key to for the subsequent stabilization of the reduced Cr(III). The results showed that the oxide corrosion products of nZVI-BC were subjected to the environment, which will eventually affect the fate and transport of the adsorbed heavy metal.

Currently, a lot of uranium containing wastewater was generated in China, which required efficient treatment before being discharged. Immobilization of uranium on ZVI has attracted many concerns from researchers in the world wide. Surface oxidation and agglomeration limited the efficiency of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) in remediation of uranium pollution. In this work, a green carbothermal reduction process was conducted to prepare environmental friendly biochar-supported ZVI (nZVI/BC). Immobilization behavior of uranium on nZVI/Cs, oxidized nZVI/Cs and Fe 3 O 4 from wastewater were investigated. The iron salt was converted into iron oxides at 700 °C, further being reduced into nZVI in the presence of ferric chloride and ferric nitrate being carbonization of starch at 800 and 900 °C. The uranium adsorption capacities were different from the carbonization temperature and iron sources, which depended on the transformation of iron species. The maximum adsorption capacities of nano-flake Fe Cl /C (1:4–900) and nanoparticles Fe N /C (1:4–900) for U(VI) were 34.82 and 55.14 mg/g. The removal efficiencies of Fe Cl /C (1:4–900) and nanoparticles Fe N /C (1:4–900) were higher than that of 44% for C–Fe 3 O 4 . The SEM-mapping and XPS analysis of nZVI/Cs after U(VI) adsorption indicated that the immobilization of U(VI) was ascribed to simultaneous adsorption and reduction.

The stability and resilience of an anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) system under transient nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nZVI) (50, 75 and 100 mg L −1 ), hydraulic shock (2-fold increase in flow rate) and their combination were studied in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. The response to the shock loads can be divided into three phases i.e. shock, inertial and recovery periods. The effects of the shock loads were directly proportional to the shock intensity. The effluent quality was gradually deteriorated after exposure to high nZVI level (100 mg L −1 ) for 2 h. The higher effluent sensitivity index and response caused by unit intensity of shock was observed under hydraulic and combined shocks. Notably, the specific anammox activity and the content of heme c were considerably reduced during the shock phase and the maximum loss rates were about 30.5% and 24.8%, respectively. Nevertheless, the extracellular polymeric substance amount in the shock phase was enhanced in varying degrees and variation tendency was disparate at all the tested shock loads. These results suggested that robustness of the anammox system was dependent on the magnitude shocks applied and the reactor resistance can be improved by reducing hydraulic retention time with the increase of nZVI concentration under these circumstances.

In this study, degradation of nitrate in drinking water by nanoscale zero-valent iron prepared from steel pickling waste liquor(S-NZVI) was investigated. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Specific Surface Area Analyzer (BET) were used to characterize the properties of the synthesized nanoparticles. Effects of different parameters, such as S-NZVI dosage, initial nitrate concentration, and pH, on the denigration were conducted. The results showed that S-NZVI had the similar characteristic of the NZVI prepared by chemical agents. The experiments indicated that the slightly acid medium with the S-NZVI dosage of 2.8 g/L had a better removal effect of nitrate, and the high removal efficiency of 96% was observed after the reaction time of 2 h, which demonstrated it was feasible and effective to remove nitrate by S-NZVI. The kinetic studies indicated that the degradation rate of nitrate by S-NZVI followed the pseudo-first order kinetics. By analyzing the end-products of nitrate reduction, 94% of nitrate was converted into ammonia ions by S-NZVI and the others translated into a little amount of nitrite and nitrogen. It is a relatively easy and cost-effective method for nitrate removal, so S-NZVI has a great potential application in nitrate removal of drinking water. The ammoniac nitrogen pollution, the main product and second pollution from the denitrification by S-NZVI can be completely degraded by cation exchange resin. So the nitrogen pollution has been completely removed from drinking water polluted by nitrate.

This study investigated the degradation of propranolol (PRO), a beta (β)-blockers, by nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) activated persulfate (PS) under ultrasonic irradiation. Effects of several critical factors were evaluated, inclusive of PS concentration, nZVI dosage, ultrasound power, initial pH, common anions, and chelating agent on PRO degradation kinetics. Higher PS concentration, nZVI dosage and ultrasound power as well as acidic pH favored the PRO degradation. Conversely, anions and chelating agent took on the inhibitory effect towards PRO degradation to different extents. Furthermore, the variations of morphology and surface composition of nZVI before and after the reaction were characterized by TEM, XRD and XPS. Finally, on the basis of identified degradation intermediates by LC/MS/MS analysis, this work tentatively proposed the degradation pathways. These encouraging results suggest that US/nZVI/PS process is a promising strategy for the treatment of PRO-induced water pollutant.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants in soil, which have carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic hazards. The effects of rhamnolipid (RL), nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AQDS) on the degradation of PAHs in soil were studied. It was found that the treatment of 5 mg·kg −1 RL + 1% nZVI +0.2 mmol·kg −1 AQDS had the highest degradation rate. The degradation rate of total PAHs and HMW-PAHs was 72.81% and 79.47% respectively after 90 days. High-throughput sequencing showed that in RL + nZVI + AQDS enhanced soil, Clostridium , Geobacter , Anaeromyxobacter and Sphingomonas were the dominant species for anaerobic degradation of PAHs. Rhodococcus , Nocardioides , and Microvirga are the dominant species for aerobic degradation of PAHs. The activities of methyltransferase, dehydrogenase and catechol 1,2-dioxygenase in the anaerobic-aerobic degradation process of PAHs were consistent with the degradation process of PAHs, indicating the role of these enzymes in the degradation of PAHs. RL, nZVI, and AQDS combined enhanced microbial anaerobic-aerobic degradation has great application potential in remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a kind of chlorinated aromatic contaminant that brings challenges from an environmental perspective. However, the performance of sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) in PCP removal remains unknown. In this study, S-nZVI was applied in the treatment of PCP-polluted water under different water chemistry conditions. The results showed that PCP was removed under the combined action of adsorption, dechlorination, and ˙OH-mediated oxidation, among which dechlorination played a leading role while oxidation lagged behind. The amount of adsorbed PCP correlated well with the PCP dechlorination rate constant (kred), except for S/Fe 0 and 0.1 and acidic initial pH (pHinitial) conditions. At neutral and alkaline pHinitial, kred increased with an increase in pHinitial due to the formation of a hydroxide layer that facilitates adsorption. At acidic pHinitial, kred increased with a decrease in pHinitial because hydrogen ions diffusing in the solution participated in the reaction. The effects of solution chemistry, such as anions, organic matter, and oxygen conditions, on PCP adsorption and transformation were also studied. Eight degradation byproducts were observed; the dechlorination products suggested that PCP dechlorination by S-nZVI occurred via a sequential pathway. PCP and its dechlorination products would then undergo ˙OH-mediated oxidation, resulting in products that are beneficial for microbes. Changes to S-nZVI after reacting and the role of sulfur were also discussed. This study confirmed that S-nZVI can be effective in the remediation of PCP-polluted groundwater. Further research is needed to optimize this remediation via coupling microbial technology and controlling the oxygen conditions.

Metallurgical wastewater with high arsenic (As) concentration presents important challenges to human health and the environment because of its high toxicity and carcinogenicity. Iron (Fe)-based adsorbents can effectively detoxify low As-containing wastewater but are less helpful for high concentration of As and for solid–liquid separation. Herein, an advanced strategy is proposed to dispose high As wastewater using nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) and ferric oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) combined with superconducting high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) technology. The superconducting HGMS technology promoted the removal of As by nZVI and FeOOH via a magnetic flocculation reaction, while simultaneously separating reaction products adsorbed As from wastewater. Interestingly, nZVI could be corroded to release Fe(II) ions which then generated Fenton reaction under aerobic conditions, facilitating the oxidization of As(III)/Fe(II) to As(V)/Fe(III) ions. The Fe(II) and Fe(III) hydrolyzed in the form of hydroxy hydroxide and further generated the magnetic flocculates and coprecipitate. The results showed that 99.06% of As was successfully removed from wastewater with an initial As concentration of 5358 mg/L, at a dosage of 20 g/L, a magnetic field strength of 5 T, and a flow velocity of 500 mL/min. Compared with FeOOH, nZVI showed more favorable adaptability for lead smelting wastewater. Removal of As from wastewater by using nZVI combined with superconducting HGMS technology has a great potential to achieve industrial application for metallurgical heavy metal wastewater.

Graphene-oxide-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite (nZVI–rGO) was synthesized and tested as an efficient percarbonate activator for degradation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). Significant dispersion of nZVI on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was observed, with good limitation of nanoparticle agglomeration and aggregation. Good TCA degradation efficiency of 90% was achieved in 2.5 h in presence of 0.8 g/l nZVI–rGO catalyst and 30 mM sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidant; however, excessive catalyst or oxidant concentration reduced the degradation efficiency. Investigation of reactive oxygen species using radical probe compounds as well as radical scavengers confirmed presence of hydroxyl (OH · ) and superoxide ( \({\text{O}}_{2}^{\cdot - }\) ) radicals that are responsible for the TCA degradation. The morphology and surface characteristics of the heterogeneous catalyst were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis revealed that the synthesized catalyst had large surface area and small particle size of 299.12 m 2 /g and 20.10 nm, respectively, compared with 5.33 m 2 /g and 1.12 µm for bare graphene oxide. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed good dispersion of nZVI on the surface of rGO. Fourier-transform infrared characteristic peaks confirmed strong attachment of Fe onto the rGO surface. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis validated the stoichiometric composition of the prepared Fe/rGO material. In conclusion, use of nZVI–rGO-activated SPC could represent an alternative technique for remediation of TCA-contaminated groundwater.

A common concern in the approval of nanotechnology for water treatment is whether there are advantages of these nanomaterials over conventional water treatment reagents. In this work, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is compared with lime (Ca(OH) 2 ), the most widely used heavy metal precipitant, for Pb(II) and Zn(II) removal, in laboratory and field experiments. Water chemistry, treatment efficiencies and reaction products of the two reagents are compared and the study shows that the moderate solution pH of nZVI and its seed effect play vital roles in producing high-quality effluents. The results are then verified in a field continuous-flow experiment using tons of lime and kilos of nZVI. The results show that sub-ppm levels (∼0.1 mg/L) of Pb(II) and Zn(II) could not be achieved via lime precipitation alone, due to the solubility limits of metal hydroxides and their re-dissolution caused by the strong alkalinity of lime. In comparison, stable and lower levels of Pb(II) and Zn(II) were easily attained using nZVI, due to its multifunctional properties and good tolerance for influent fluctuation enabled by its inherent pH-stabilizing nature. SEM characterizations, particle size analyses and quiescent settling experiments show the ability of nZVI to generate large and consolidated solids that are amenable to gravitational separation. The study shows several key advantages of nZVI over lime technology in Pb(II) and Zn(II) removal. As lime is widely used for heavy metal removal, this work provides an effective advanced treatment process to supplement lime-based treatment methods.

For the first time, hydrophilized and functionalized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane was synthesized via two-stage process, addition of polyvinyl alcohol and in situ polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), and nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) was incorporated within modified membrane. The as-prepared PAA/PAN-NZVI (PPN) composites possessed superior reactivity for metronidazole (MNZ) with transformation ratio 2.03 and reaction rate 4.77 times higher than that by bare NZVI. Meanwhile, the enhanced stability and recyclability of PPN composites were maintained over repeated cycles. The major advantages of synthetic method lie in the remarkably increased loading and decreased agglomeration of NZVI. Moreover, with hydrophilized and functionalized synthesis processes of membrane, the potential risk of released iron ions was not a concern due to strong chelation of grafted carboxyl groups. Analyses of morphological characteristics (FE-SEM), chemical structure (FTIR), element valence and groups (XPS) of samples confirmed the successful graft of carboxylic acid groups and formation of a uniform iron nanoparticles coating onto PAN matrix. The reaction kinetics of MNZ with PPN composites were well-described by a two-parameter pseudo-first-order decay model with activation energy of 29.5 kJ/mol. The co-solutes except humic acid had a negligible effect on MNZ transformation. Determination of intermediates revealed that nitro reduction, N-denitration and hydroxyethyl cleavage were the main pathways for transformation of MNZ. The findings suggest that the novel composites possess huge potential for antibiotics wastewater treatment.
