To date, various methods have been adopted to enhance the visible-light photocatalytic activity of nano-TiO2. However, a more facile and moderate method is still highly desirable. In this work, a series of defective nano-TiO2 photocatalysts with surface oxygen vacancy defects (SOVDs) coordinated by surface acetate ligands (SALs) were synthesized via a facile low-temperature sol-hydrothermal method without more complicated modifications. The low synthesis temperature not only results in the preservation of SALs derived from the protective agent acetic acid, but also results in a considerable amount of SOVDs due to low crystallinity and small particle size. The SALs are coordinated to nano-TiO2 in both bidentate chelating and bidentate bridging modes. The electron-withdrawing carboxyl groups can induce the splitting of the impurity states introduced by the SOVDs when the SALs and SOVDs coexist on the surface of TiO2. The split impurity states contribute mainly to the formation of valence band (VB) tail states, which can significantly narrow the bandgap of TiO2. Furthermore, the SOVDs and SALs synergistically result in the positive shift of the main VB edge of TiO2, which can significantly enhance the oxidizing capability of the photogenerated holes. Meanwhile, an appropriate amount of SOVDs can effectively promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The synergistic effect of the above factors significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity of the oxygen-deficient nano-TiO2 for phenol degradation.

The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) consisting of anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles that were synthesized via a hydrothermal method was studied. The synthesized TiO 2 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and UV–vis spectroscopy. Then the J - V curve, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) measurement were applied to evaluate the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. Compared with the commercial TiO 2 nanoparticles (P25), the synthesized-TiO 2 nanoparticles showed better performance. By adding diethylene glycol (DEG) before the hydrothermal process, the synthesized TiO 2 nanoparticles (hereafter referred to as TiO 2 -DEG particles) shows narrower size distribution, larger specific surface area, higher crystallinity, and less surface defects than TiO 2 (DEG free) particles. The analysis of photovoltaic properties of DSSCs based on TiO 2 -DEG particles showed that the recombination of electron-hole pairs was decreased and the trapping of carries in grain boundaries restrained. It was believed that the photoelectrode fabricated with the as-prepared TiO 2 nanoparticles improved the loading amount of dye sensitizers (N719), and enhanced the photocurrent of the DSSCs. As a result, the TiO 2 -DEG particle based cells achieved a photo-to-electricity conversion efficiency ( η ) of 7.90%, which is higher than 7.53% for the cell based on TiO2 (DEG free) and 6.59% for the one fabricated with P25.

Co-exposure of aquatic organisms to engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and antibiotics is likely to take place in the environment. However, the impacts of co-exposure on aquatic organisms are virtually unknown and understanding the joint toxicity of ENPs and antibiotics is a topic of importance. The independent action (IA) model and the concentration addition (CA) model are two of the most common approaches to mixture toxicity assessment. In this study, the joint toxicity of two ENPs (nCeO 2 and nTiO 2 ) and one antibiotic (florfenicol, FLO) to Chlorella pyrenoidosa was determined to compare the applicability of the IA and the CA model. Concentration-response analyses were performed for single toxicants and for binary mixtures containing FLO and one of the ENPs at two suspended particle concentrations. The effect concentrations and the observed effects of the binary mixtures were compared to the predictions of the joint toxicity. The observed toxicity associated with the nCeO 2 or nTiO 2 exposure was enhanced by the concomitant FLO exposure. The joint toxicity of nCeO 2 and FLO was significantly higher than that of nTiO 2 and FLO. Predictions based on the IA and CA models tend to underestimate the overall toxicity (in terms of median effect concentration) of the binary mixtures, but IA performs better than CA, irrespective of the effect level under consideration and the types of mixtures studied. This result underpins the need to consider the effects of mixtures of ENPs and organic chemicals on aquatic organisms, and the practicability of the IA and CA methods in toxicity assessment of ENPs.

In order to effectively reduce noise, the application of sound absorbing textile materials has gradually increased, also the rapid development of acoustic coating consists of conventional fiber layers and polymers. In this work, the surface morphology, micro-structure and sound absorption properties of polyvinyl alcohol coated fabric and its composites were studied. It was found that the addition of nano-TiO 2 particles can obviously improve the sound absorption properties, and the absorption coefficient is related to fabric thickness. Furthermore, the surface of the coated fabric was compounded with melt-blown nonwoven fabric, thus to fabricate composite sound absorber. Persistently high arsenic levels in drinking water threaten underprivileged areas worldwide. Although nanomaterials exhibit exceptional arsenic removal properties, their implementation presents challenges. We converted N-methylimidazole-modified polyvinyl chloride into a granular anion exchange resin (PNAXRs) using an environmentally friendly and gentle synthesis method. Additionally, a unified approach for embedding nanomaterials within these resins was proposed, yielding a TiO 2 composite resin (TiO 2 @PNAXRs). Structural characterization confirmed the successful grafting of imidazolium cations with anion-exchange properties onto polyvinyl chloride side chains. BET analysis indicates a high specific surface area of 70.31 m 2 /g for the PNAXRs. TGA curves demonstrate the successful encapsulation of approximately 24.9% TiO 2 within the composite resin. The SEM-EDS results show a uniform distribution of TiO 2 in the PNAXRs, which facilitates the effective utilization of TiO 2 . Adsorption experiments in conjunction with XPS analysis provided insights into the dual role of inner-sphere complexation and ion exchange in the adsorption mechanism of As(V) by TiO 2 @PNAXRs. In dynamic adsorption tests utilizing high-As(V) groundwater from the Datong Basin as the influent, TiO 2 @PNAXRs demonstrated the ability to produce effluents that meet the World Health Organization's recommended limit for arsenic in drinking water, with a capacity of 1780 bed volumes. These findings support the use of PNAXRs as ideal matrices for TiO 2 and their practical application in As(V) removal processes.

To enhance the interface bonding performance of cement sheaths in oil and gas wells, this study developed nano TiO 2 -modified waterborne epoxy resin (NTWER) as a cement slurry additive. The mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of the resulting cement stones were systematically examined. Results indicate that an optimal concentration of nano TiO 2 (NT) in waterborne epoxy resin (WER) improves the stability of the cement slurry. The inclusion of NTWER notably enhanced the shear bonding strength while slightly decreasing uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength and reducing Young’s modulus. When the nano TiO 2 (NT) content in the WER reached 3 %, substantial improvements in shear bonding strength were recorded at both the casing (1st interface) and borehole wall (2nd interface) interfaces after curing for 1, 2, and 7 days, compared to plain cement. Specifically, the shear bonding strength at the 1st interface increased by 23.9 %, 33.5 %, and 31.0 %, while at the 2nd interface, it rose by 25.3 %, 42.5 %, and 37.4 %. Notably, the 2nd interface consistently exhibited higher bonding strength than the 1st. Mechanic studies suggest that NTWER facilitates improved bonding by mitigating early hydration inhibition, reducing macropores, and decreasing overall porosity within the cement matrix. This densification effect and enhanced bonding properties indicate that NTWER effectively addresses the limitations of conventional epoxy resin in oil and gas well cementing applications, offering a promising approach for achieving durable zonal isolation and increased well integrity.

The TiO 2 is grafted by triethylamine and is introduced on the surface of the carbon fiber, which improves the wettability and activity of the carbon fiber surface and at the same time strengthens the carbon fiber/polyimide composite. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the triethylamine grafting successfully on TiO 2 . Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results show that when the trimethylamine concentration is 1.0%, a uniform coating is formed on the surface of the carbon fiber. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) were increased by 32% and 69%, respectively.

A novel visible light sensitized photoelectrochemical sensing platform was constructed based on the perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid/titanium dioxide (PTCA/TiO 2 ) heterojunction as the photoelectric beacon. PTCA was synthesized via facile steps of hydrolysis and neutralization reaction, and then the PTCA/TiO 2 heterojunction was easily prepared by coating PTCA on nano-TiO 2 surface. The resulting photoelectric beacon was characterized by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, FTIR spectroscopy, and ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometer. Using parathion-methyl as a model, after a simple hydrolyzation process, p-nitrophenol as the hydrolysate of parathion-methyl could be obtained, the fabricated derivative photoelectrochemical sensor showed good performances with a rapid response, instrument simple and portable, low detection limit (0.08 nmol L −1 ) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, and good selectivity against other pesticides and possible interferences. It had been successfully applied to the detection of parathion-methyl in green vegetables and the results agreed well with that by GC–MS. This strategy not only extends the application of PTCA, but also presents a simple, economic and novel methodology for photoelectrochemical sensing.

Conventional type-II heterojunctions broaden visible-light absorption and enhance charge separation but weaken redox potentials via charge migration, reducing thermodynamic driving force for surface catalysis. A novel direct Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed by decorating B 4 C with TiO 2 nanoparticles for efficient solar-driven degradation of 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one and other biocidal pollutants. The optimized TiO 2 /B 4 C photocatalyst achieved 98% BIT degradation within 4 h under simulated solar irradiation, with an apparent rate constant of 1.00 h −1 , approximately 38 and 6.2 times higher than those of pristine B 4 C and TiO 2 , respectively. The incorporation of B 4 C broadened visible-light absorption and promoted interfacial charge separation, while the formation of an internal electric field enabled a direct Z -scheme charge-transfer pathway that preserved strong redox potentials. As a result, photogenerated electrons accumulated on B 4 C and generated O 2 •− radicals, whereas holes retained on TiO 2 produced • OH radicals, jointly driving the oxidative degradation of pollutants. Electron Spin Resonance and radical scavenger analyses confirmed O 2 •− and • OH as the key reactive species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidated the interfacial charge-transfer mechanism and the degradation pathway of BIT. This work demonstrates that the TiO 2 /B 4 C Z -scheme heterojunction provides an efficient strategy for solar-driven photocatalytic removal of biocidal pollutants, providing insights into rational design of high-performance photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

With the rapid expansion of antibody drug market, most biopharmaceutical industries urgently need to optimize their downstream purification processes to reduce production costs and improve market competitiveness. In this study, a dual-filler polyether sulfone (PES) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) that combines covalent-organic framework (COF) with nano TiO 2 was developed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional protein A based purification methods. Firstly, COF@TiO 2 dual-filler was prepared by Schiff base reaction. The proposed dual-filler MMM was fabricated via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS), followed by functionalization with a Fab-specific affinity peptide (m-EDPW) of trastuzumab through atom-transfer radical-polymerization method. The resulting m-EDPW@COF@TiO 2 /PES affinity membrane effectively integrates the merits of COF and TiO 2 and show synergistic effects, demonstrating satisfactory hydrophilicity, anti-fouling ability (BSA rejection rate: 97.7%), enrichment recovery (90.8%), binding capacity for trastuzumab (386.6 mg/g), and long-term stability (∼ 21 days). Particularly, this affinity membrane showed good selectivity and specificity, enabling the successful purification of trastuzumab from spiked HCC1937 cancer cell culture medium with satisfactory purity (∼97.4%) and preservation of the antibody secondary structure. This study not only developed a novel affinity membrane with satisfactory antibody separation performance but also opened a new route for developing dual-filler or multi-filler MMM for highly efficient downstream protein purification.

Large volume production and application of nano-TiO 2 make it inevitably release to natural waters and its environmental behaviors would be affected by natural organic matters. In this study, the mechanisms of humic acid (HA) affecting the photocatalytic performance of nano-TiO 2 were elucidated by using three HA fractions from the same source but with different polarities. Bulk HA was fractionated on a silica gel column to get three fractions with polarity increasing in the order of FA, FB and FC. FA was fulvic acid-like while FB and FC were humic acid-like. All the three fractions (at 0.1 mg/L) promoted the generation of hydroxyl radicals ( OHs) by nano-TiO 2 , and thus in turn facilitated the photocatalytic degradation of bispheol A (BPA). FA and FC displayed a stronger promotion effect than FB and the bulk HA. Online in situ flow cell ATR-FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that HA fractions could form charge-transfer complex with nano-TiO 2 surface through the phenolic hydroxyl and carboxylic groups, which favored the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Through step methylation experiments, it was verified that the phenolic hydroxyl and carboxylic groups of HA fractions played important roles in promoting the photocatalytic performance of nano-TiO 2 , and the effect of carboxylic group was more significant than the phenolic hydroxyl group.

Herein, a dense rutile nano-titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) coating was constructed on the nonwoven fabric (NWF) membrane surfaces via the bio-inspired TiO 2 sol-gel method. The mineralization of nano-TiO 2 was large-scale and uniform on the non-woven fabrics (NWF) surface, reducing membrane surface roughness and pore sizes; nevertheless, largely improving the dynamic water super-wetting, water penetration, and underwater oil repellency due to the excellent water affinity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed the hydration layer of the NWF was reinforced by the surface-mineralized nano-TiO 2 , thus preventing the bovine serum albumin (BSA) and emulsified oil droplets from fouling. Even after the 180 min of continuous emulsion separation, the mineralized NWF (TiO 2 -PDA/PEI-NWF-M) only suffered from the mild decline of permeation fluxes from ∼55 L/m 2 •h to ∼43 L/m 2 •h and oil rejection from ∼94% to ∼83%, respectively. After illuminated under UV light, it was recovered successfully because of the in-situ generation of reactive species ( e.g. •OH, •O 2 − and 1 O 2 ) on TiO 2 weakened the interaction of foulants on the membrane surface. The photoactive self-cleaning provided the TiO 2 -PDA/PEI-NWF-M with better efficiency of oil-fouling reduction, permeation fluxes recovery, and oil removal than those of simple water and harsh NaClO washing. Most importantly, the TiO 2 -PDA/PEI-NWF-M maintained its surface physical and chemical characteristics after vigorous cross-flow shearing for 48 h. It provided the practical potential in developing the high-efficient and free-chemical self-cleaning with the high and stable flux recovery for the tricky crude oil/water emulsion remediation.
