Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane has recently drawn interest in textile and dyeing wastewater treatment due to its unique advantages of low-cost and large flux. However, its low rejection to dyes and developing appropriate membrane materials remain the major hurdles for its large-scale application. Herein, we developed a novel conductive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-Ni membrane combined with an external electric field to treat typical dyes. The membrane could be fabricated by a facile and low-cost method. The conductive PVDF-Ni membrane showed favorable rejection rate of Congo red (CR) (100%) and extremely high permeance (137.5 ± 6.8 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). To our knowledge, the permeance has exceeded the maximal literature record for the membranes with similar rejection rates of CR. The novel membrane combined with external electric field also provided a unique aeration mode: in-situ aeration, due to its good electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (overpotential of 157 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 ). Benefit from the in-situ aeration, the PVDF-Ni membrane showed 94% flux recovery after filtration of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Additionally, the PVDF-Ni membrane exhibited evident resistance to dye absorption and antibacterial activity. These versatile proprieties, together with the facile fabrication process, indicated the tremendous application prospect of the fabricated PVDF-Ni membrane for textile and dyeing wastewater treatment .

Generation of ultrathin polyamide (PA) film has been recognized as an effective strategy for fabricating thin film composite (TFC) NF membranes with ultrahigh water permeance and desirable selectivity. However, direct synthesis of an ultrathin PA film via conventional in-situ interface polymerization (ISIP) on commercial substrate membranes has been widely considered impossible. Here we demonstrated this challenge can be surmounted by simultaneously optimizing the monomer concentration and substrate membrane selection. A defect-free PA film with thickness of 8.5 nm was directly formed on a commercial substrate membrane with smooth and hydrophilic surface, as well as medium pore size, only by using a high trimesoyl chloride (TMC) concentration of 0.1 w/v% and a low piperazine (PIP) concentration of 0.05 w/v %. The optimized TFC NF membrane prepared via this facile strategy exhibited an ultrahigh pure water permeance of 46.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and a desirable Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 98.1%. As far as we know, this performance can exceed all the reported TFC NF membranes fabricated with conventional ISIP technique, and also be comparable to most state-of-the-art TFC NF membranes prepared with other complicated ex-situ interfacial polymerization (ESIP). The novel insight and feasible avenues of this study are expected to pave the way for the practical production and application of TFC NF membranes with ultrahigh water permeance.

Nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) are promising candidates for advanced drinking water treatment due to their excellent retention capabilities, however, their widespread application is limited by low water permeance and susceptibility to inorganic scaling. In this study, Fe(III)-tannic acid‑molybdenum disulfide (Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 ) nanosheets were synthesized and employed as an interlayer material for NFM fabrication. The resulting NFMs were then created through interfacial polymerization, labeled as MoS 2 -1.5, MoS 2 -3.0, and MoS 2 -4.5 based on varying materials loading. Experimental results indicated that the membrane morphology, surface roughness, electronegativity, amine group content, hydrophilicity, selectivity, and resistance to inorganic scaling were all affected by the amount of Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 loading. The MoS 2 -3.0 NFM exhibited the highest roughness and uniformity (Ra: 111.25 ± 3.30 nm), along with enhanced hydrophilicity and the smallest pore size (0.39 nm) among the Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 NFMs. These characteristics contributed to a high water permeance of 20.19 LMH/bar. Sulfate rejection decreased notably with increasing amine content, while calcium ion rejection showed a slight decline as surface electronegativity increased. Notably, the pore size of the Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 NFMs remained largely unchanged at low and moderate loadings. Although the MoS 2 -4.5 NFM exhibited even higher water permeance and electronegativity, its surface structure underwent significant changes, leading to inferior performance in terms of scaling resistance and natural organic matter removal compared to the MoS 2 -3.0 membrane. Overall, this study provides a novel strategy for enhance both water permeability and anti-scaling performance of NFMs, offering potential cost reductions for drinking water treatment applications.

The surface coating-crosslinking method is one of the main ways to develop chemically stable nanofiltration membranes, but the relatively low flux caused by thick separation membrane layer is recognized as the key limiting factor hindering its development. Carrageenan (κ-CGN) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were selected as matrix coating materials, introducing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNT) for modification, respectively, and after the coating was cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GA), two novel composite nanofiltration membranes were successfully prepared. The dual-path modification strategy significantly enhanced the flux by simultaneously altering the surface characteristics and internal structure of the membrane. By adjusting the concentration of β-CD and carboxylated CNT, the flux of the optimal membranes was enhanced to 1.42 and 1.58 times of the original κ-CGN /CMC membrane, respectively, while the salt rejection performance was basically not affected. In addition, β-CD and carboxylated CNT were tightly connected with the κ-CGN/CMC network by covalent or hydrogen bonds, which maintained the chemical structural stability of the separation layer. The two composite nanofiltration membranes demonstrated outstanding acid/alkali tolerance and chlorine resistance stability, enabling their application for substance separation in extreme chemical environment. Meanwhile, the hydrophilicity and low surface roughness endowed the membranes with excellent anti-fouling property, enhancing the practical application prospects of the membranes.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in drinking water pose major concerns for public health and water resource protection. Nanofiltration (NF) is a promising technology for PFAS removal; however, many NF membranes achieve high PFAS rejection at the expense of rejecting beneficial mineral ions. In this study, we utilized carboxylated cellulose nanofiber (C–CNF) interlayers to fabricate highly selective NF membranes, enabling efficient PFAS removal at uncompromised mineral ion passage. The optimized NF-60 membrane featured a higher negative surface charge, looser structure, enhanced hydrophilicity, and larger pore size, resulting in more than a 2.5-fold increase in pure water permeance (50.8 LMH/bar), lower rejection of mineral ions (<20.2%), and high PFAS rejection (>87.7%). The selectivity for Ca 2+ over perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) selectivity was improved by more than fourfold owing to stronger electrostatic repulsion and reduced hydrophobic interactions, outperforming many reported NF membranes. Density function theory calculations further revealed a reduced adsorption tendency of PFOS on the NF-60 membrane. These results provide valuable guidance for the development of NF membranes with high selectivity between mineral ions and PFASs in advanced drinking water purification.

The incorporation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) into interfacial polymerized thin film nanocomposites (TFNs) has been extensively reported to enhance their membrane performance. However, the traditional membrane synthesis strategy suffers from the poor dispersity of hydrophobic ZIF-8 in an aqueous phase. Moreover, the exact structure of this TFN membrane is still a subject of scientific debate since only few studies of the visualization of ZIF-8 in PA layers by TEM or SEM characterization have been reported. Herein, a novel strategy for the synthesis of TFN membranes containing ZIF-8 (TFN–ZIF-8) was developed via an in situ conversion of ZnO in a polyamide layer into ZIF-8. Due to the hydrophilic nature of ZnO, it can be well dispersed in the aqueous phase of interfacial polymerization. More importantly, SEM and TEM characterizations clearly revealed the presence of ZIF-8 crystals in the polyamide layer. The as-prepared TFN–ZIF-8 membrane shows a pure water permeance of 20.4 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, which is 423% higher than that of the pristine TFC membrane, and meanwhile, has 97.4% Na2SO4 rejection. The novel TFN–ZIF-8 membrane synthesis strategy provided in this study can provide a new incentive to develop advanced ZIF-8 membranes applicable to various separation processes for further sustainable use.

A novel Tröger's base-based diamine monomer-4,4′-(6H,12H-5,11-methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocine-2,8-diyl)dianiline (DAPTB) was designed and prepared. • The novel DAPTB decorated polyamide thin film composite nanofiltration (TFC NF) membrane was fabricated. • The M DAPTB-TMC NF membrane showed a water flux that was 4.54 times higher than that of the M PIP-TMC membrane, and precise dye/salt selectivity. • The M DAPTB-TMC NF membrane showed excellent durability under strong acidic environments. • The rejection for EBT still remained over 99% after 63 days of static soaking in 20 wt% H 2 SO 4 solution. For efficient dye/salt separation, particularly under strongly acidic conditions, the limited acid stability of traditional polypiperazine-amide thin film composite nanofiltration membrane (M PIP-TMC TFC NF) poses a significant challenge, as the piperazine-amide bonds are susceptible to hydrolysis, resulting in pronounced performance deterioration. Optimizing the chemical composition of loose NF membranes offers a promising strategy to overcome this limitation by simultaneously enhancing selectivity and permeance. In this study, a novel kind of wholly Tröger's base-based diamine monomer was developed and a Tröger's base-based polyamide TFC NF membrane was successfully fabricated through sequential non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPs) method and in situ interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. Compared with the conventional M PIP-TMC NF membrane, the novel diamine monomer 4,4′-( 6H,12H -5,11-methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocine-2,8-diyl)dianiline (DAPTB) which decorated with linear, rigid, and twisted structure endowed the obtained M DAPTB-TMC NF membrane with a more loosely packed separation layer. Meanwhile, the M DAPTB-TMC NF membrane showed high water permeability of 26.15 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , which was 4.54 times higher than M PIP-TMC membrane. Furthermore, the membrane achieved exceptional rejections including 99.8% for eriochrome black T (EBT), and 99.2% for congo red (CR), accompanied by low Na₂SO₄ rejections of approximately 7.17% and 1.01%, respectively. Especially, the M DAPTB-TMC membrane demonstrated outstanding acid resistance, maintaining a high EBT rejection of 99.5% and a stable permeance even after 60 days of immersion in 20 wt% H₂SO₄, demonstrating the great potential for NF separation applications in the strong acidic conditions in the future. Dye effluent is regarded as one of the most hazardous industrial effluents. Although loose nanofiltration (NF) membranes have been considered as an effective alternative technique for treating dye effluent, their development is still constrained by subpar permeance, separation efficiency and anti-fouling performance. In this work, a novel loose polyamide (PA) NF membrane was designed employing a conventional interfacial polymerization process using piperazine-2-carboxylic acid (PIP-COOH) and trimesoyl chloride as aqueous and organic phase monomers, respectively. The presence of unique electron-absorbing carboxyl groups on the PIP-COOH monomer not only provided abundant negative charge on the membrane surface, but also greatly reduced the reactivity, diffusion rate and solubility in n-hexane of the aqueous monomer, allowing for the formation of a more relaxed and smoother active layer. The balanced combination of pore size screening and Donnan effect achieved precise separations with high permeability. Moreover, the interaction of the carboxyl groups with the backbone structure increased the free volume of the PA layer and improved permeability significantly. The PIP-COOH/TMC membrane prepared under the optimal conditions exhibited high water permeance of 598.1 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·MPa −1 , high reactive red rejection (99.3%) and low NaCl rejection (5.4%). Furthermore, the membrane possessed exceptional anti-fouling performance thanks to the ultra-smooth surface with crucial antifouling index flux recovery ratio as high as about 99%, which showed unexpected application possibilities. In conclusion, this study offers a potential novel membrane material for the development and application of loose NF membranes in the treatment of colored effluent.

Piperazine (PIP)-based polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes exhibit limited rejection of divalent cations due to their negatively charged surfaces and insufficient compactness, restricting their broader application in various water treatment processes. To overcome this challenge, a novel strategy—stepwise increasing TMC concentration (SITC) during the interfacial polymerization (IP)—was proposed to optimize the PA layer structure. Conventional PA layer demonstrates a vertical diffusion structure: a compact barrier region underneath a thick and loose region. The regulatory goal of SITC is to enhance compactness while minimizing the increase in hydraulic resistance. The regulatory mechanism suggested SITC could regulate the IP reaction in both over time (throughout the IP process) and across the reaction region. During the initial IP stage, SITC reduced the reaction rate and increased PIP/TMC ratio in the bottom reaction zone, thereby improving the compactness and potential of final bottom barrier region. Thus, SITC can effectively restrict the permeation of cations, significantly increasing MgCl 2 rejection from 33.70 % to 92.12 %. In the subsequent diffusion-limited stage, SITC enhanced the restriction on PIP diffusion, decreasing the thickness of the final upper loose region and surface potential. Those advantageous characteristics allowed the membrane to maintain a high rejection for Na 2 SO 4 (>98.44 %). Concurrently, the membrane maintained a high water permeance (13.00 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), attributed to the thin (16.69 nm) and optimized compactness distribution of its PA layer. This study provided a novel mechanism insight into the functional customization of NF membranes by decoupling the synthesis-property-performance relationship.
