Preparation and characterization of PVA-g-GO/PVA/PAN composite membrane for pervaporation desalination

Zheng Zeng,Haikuan Yuan,Jie Lu

Graphene oxide (GO) has extensive applications in membrane-based separations, but its dispersion in the membrane has always been a problem due to the presence of π–π interactions in GO nanosheets. In this study, a grafting reaction was designed by using poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for GO grafting modification and poly (vinyl alcohol)-g-graphene oxide (PVA-g-GO) nanocomposites were synthesized. The grafting material to GO was the same as the basic separation polymer material. PVA-g-GO showed better dispersibility and hydrophilicity than GO, and a series of composite membranes were prepared using a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane as a substrate. PVA-g-GO nanocomposites and membranes were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. The addition of PVA-g-GO improved both the separation performance and anti-swelling property of the composite membrane, and the PVA-g-GO/PVA/PAN composite membrane loaded with 2 wt.% PVA-g-GO obtained a high flux of 4.46 kg/m 2 · h and a high rejection of 99.99% when dehydrating 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at 30°C by pervaporation.

Enhancing butanol separation efficiency in pervaporation with ZIF-8 porous liquid infused mixed matrix membranes

Ayesha Komal,Amna Kasuri,Muhammad Yasin,Asim Laeeq Khan,Abdul Razzaq,Hamad Alhmohamadi,Faheem Hassan Akhtar,Arsalan Ahmad Raja,R. Nawaz,Emilia Abdulmalek,Mazhar Amjad Gilani

Separating butanol/water mixtures via distillation is notably energy-intensive and costly, highlighting the urgent need for more efficient alternatives. This study introduces a novel approach using mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) infused with Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) transformed into its porous liquid (PL) form, aimed at enhancing the separation efficiency of butanol/water mixtures through pervaporation (PV). We selected ZIF-8 for its hydrophobic nature and high surface area, which are critical for improving both flux and selectivity in membrane-based separation processes. The study details the synthesis of ZIF-8-PL, its characterization through techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the fabrication of the MMMs. Our results demonstrate that ZIF-8-PL-based membranes at 55°C with a 30 wt% PL loading significantly enhance biobutanol-selective PV efficiency. Specifically, these membranes show an improvement in flux of approximately 102% and an increase in separation factor by 64% when compared to unmodified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. This significant enhancement highlights the effectiveness of PL-based fillers in advancing MMM performance for biofuel separation, providing a promising route to optimize energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness in industrial scale applications.

Novel MOF-capped halloysite nanotubes/PDMS mixed matrix membranes for enhanced n-butanol permselective pervaporation

Heng Mao,Shen-Hui Li,Ao-Shuai Zhang,Li-Hao Xu,Jiao-Jiao Lu,Zhi-Ping Zhao

With the help of density functional theory calculations, a unique MOF-capped nanotube architecture was initially conceived in this study based on the solution-diffusion mechanism. Then, the novel ZIF-8-capped halloysite nanotubes (ZHNTs) were prepared and incorporated in the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) bulk to achieve the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for n -butanol permselective pervaporation . The remarkable characteristic of this membrane was that the HNT lumen (∼25 nm) in ZHNTs provided the exquisite diffusion highway for the penetrants that were first selected through the capping ZIF-8 layer. Simultaneously, the close connection of ZIF-8 layer on external surface of ZHNTs created the relatively continuous pathways for molecular permeation. As expected, the embedding ZHNTs significantly improved the separation performances of the membranes. Impressively, the as-obtained membrane acquired a high separation factor of 61.3 (58.7% higher than that of PDMS control membrane) with a comparable flux of 683 g m -2  h -1 (2.43-fold as much as that of PDMS control membrane) at 40 °C in the separation of 1 wt% n -butanol aqueous solution. Moreover, the presence of ZHNTs conferred excellent interfacial compatibility, mechanical properties, and good long-term stability on the resultant membranes. This study may shed light on the rational design of high-performance MMMs for biofuels recovery from fermentation broths .

Preparation of ultrathin, robust membranes through reactive layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly for pervaporation dehydration

Guanhua Liu,Zhongyi Jiang,Cheng Chen,Lipeng Hou,Boxin Gao,Hao Yang,Hong Wu,Fusheng Pan,Peng Zhang,Xingzhong Cao

Fabricating ultrathin membranes with high separation performance and stability remains a great challenge. Tannic acid (TA) is a bio-based polyphenol and can form multifunctional coatings through catechol chemistry. In this study, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and TA were alternatively deposited on hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) porous membrane via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly driven by covalent interaction between the amine groups of PEI and polyphenols of TA. The LbL assembly process was verified by the step-wise change of water contact angles. The formation of covalent bond was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The free volume property of the membranes was revealed by the Doppler broadening energy spectra. The resultant membranes possessed ultrathin active layers with thicknesses ranging from 118 to 220   nm. When utilized for pervaporation dehydration of 90   wt% ethanol aqueous solution, the membrane exhibited high separation performance with permeation flux of 1343   g/m 2   h and separation factor of 1012 with 5.5 bilayers and pH 8 at 349   K, arising from the increased hydrophilicity and favorable free volume property. Moreover, the membrane showed favorable long-term stability due to the strong interfacial interactions.

MOF UiO-66 Membranes for Pervaporation Prepared by Secondary Growth Using Zr(n-OPr)4

Shenyi Tang,Chenglian Luo,Zhi Wang,Xinlei Liu

A defect-free and stable metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane is a promising candidate for the separation of methanol/methyl tertiary butyl ether (MeOH/MTBE) mixtures. In this work, a structural-integrity and low-thickness (∼400 nm) UiO-66 membrane was fabricated by regulating the metal ion/ligand molar ratio in the synthesis solution and optimizing the preparation process using the secondary growth method with safer and more environment-friendly Zr(n-OPr)4 metal source. Based on the effective pore size and inherent amphiphilic structure of UiO-66, the membrane exhibits exceptional pervaporation (PV) performance. For the separation of MeOH/MTBE (5:95 wt/wt %) mixtures, the membrane displays an outstanding separation performance with an average separation factor of 2.23 × 104 and an average total flux of 3.61 kg·m–2·h–1 at 40 °C, which is superior to most membranes reported for the PV separation of MeOH/MTBE mixtures. In addition, a 72 h PV process was used to further confirm the structural stability of the membrane.

Self-assembled ILs-PVA micelle nanostructure impart the pervaporation membrane with high ethanol dehydration performance

Zakawat Ali,Xiaochun Zhang,Palwasha Khan,Jie Li,Nai Zhang,Qixin Wang,Muhammad Yasin,Mazhar Amjad Gilani,Asim Laeeq Khan,Linglong Shan,Xiangping Zhang

Achieving strong interaction with the targeted composition and constructing abundant transport channels is crucial to obtain the pervaporation (PV) membrane with high selectivity and flux. Here, three ionic liquids (ILs) were screened out based on their relative selectivity and capacity targeting for bioethanol dehydration by COSMO-RS. The interaction energies analysis between ILs, EtOH, and H 2 O suggests that the ILs can form strong hydrogen bonds with water and disrupt the hydrogen bond in the EtOH–H 2 O azeotropic mixture, which is beneficial for improving the selectivity. Furthermore, driven by the multiple hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals forces, ILs could self-assemble with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to fabricate the PV membrane with well-ordered micelle nanostructure, as its structure was revealed by MD simulations. The formation of the ILs-PVA micelle dramatically influenced membrane surface morphology, roughness, and water contact angle, providing an extra transport channel for the membrane. The optimal membrane (at the cmc point) exhibited a superior ethanol dehydration separation factor of 1627, along with a flux of 684 g/m 2 h at 50 °C. It can be expected that this novel self-assembled ILs-PVA micelle nanostructure strategy will find promising applications in other azeotropic mixture separation processes, like ethanol-ethyl acetate, water-butanol, etc.

Fluoride-assisted ultradilute precursor synthesis of defect-free thin FAU zeolite membrane for pervaporation dehydration

Qing Wang,Huiyuan Chen,Nong Xu,Qiao Liu,Wei Yang,Bin Wang,Weihong Xing

Pervaporation (PV) is a promising alternative to distillation for biofuel dehydration, yet fabricating thin, defect-free zeolite membranes remains challenging. In this work, a synergistic strategy combining nanoseeds, fluoride mineralizers, and ultradilute precursors was developed to construct high-quality faujasite (FAU) membranes. Nanoseeds provided compact seed layers, fluoride promoted crystal intergrowth while suppressing non-selective channels, and ultradilute precursors slowed crystallization yielding ~2.4 μm membranes with low defect density. Performance analysis confirmed that PV separation followed an adsorption-diffusion mechanism. The optimized membrane achieved excellent fluxes of 3.70 kg/(m 2 h) with a separation factor of 1520 for a 10 wt% water/isopropanol mixture and 6.01 kg/(m 2 h) with a separation factor of 742 for a 20 wt% water/ n -butanol mixture. These results surpassed the results of previously reported membranes and demonstrated how this cooperative strategy provides a viable pathway for scalable fabrication of defect-free thin zeolite membranes.

Joule heating assisted photothermal pervaporation MWCNTs/SA-PAN@BF membrane for high-performance ethanol dehydration

Wen-Rui Ma,Zhuo Chen,Ying-Lin He,Dilibinuer Niyazimaimaiti,Maimaiti Simayia,Jincheng Wu,Peng-Cheng Ma,Tian-Ze Wang,Yuan Fan,Abudukeremu Kadier

Energy-efficient pervaporation (PV) membrane technology has shown significant potential for challenging liquid-liquid separations such as ethanol dehydration. However, its performance is highly temperature-dependent, and conventional bulk heating of the feed is energy-intensive and can damage membranes. To address this challenge, this study introduces an innovative strategy that synergistically combines photothermal and Joule heating within a novel PV device enabling precise and localized heating at the membrane interface. A tailored composite membrane was fabricated on polyacrylonitrile modified basalt fiber fabrics substrate, integrating carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and sodium alginate as a photothermal separation layer. The device employs a stainless-steel mesh as both a sealing gasket and a Joule heating layer, allowing targeted thermal regulation. The impacts of MWCNTs dose, applied voltage, and feed composition on ethanol dehydration performance, energy cost, as well as long-term stability, were experimentally evaluated. At 2.9 V and 1 sun, the optimal PV membrane (2 wt% MWCNTs) demonstrated a separation factor of 1313.64 and a flux of 1124.67 g m −2 h −1 for ethanol dehydration (90 wt%). The total energy consumption was reduced by over 80% compared with the traditional bulk heating process when including the energy consumption of the solar simulator and electricity. The PV membrane also maintained excellent performance during a 120-h stability test. The mechanism, cost and performance of the novel PV device were also revealed for academic and industrial interests. This work provides a novel, efficient, and sustainable pathway for advancing PV membrane separation technology.

COF hybrid membrane with Ag+ anchored facilitated transport channel for aromatics and alkane pervaporation separation

Chao Luo,Tianpei Yi,Bin Du,Zhijie Yuan,Fusheng Pan,Zhongyi Jiang

Aromatic and alkane separation plays a vital role in naphtha steam cracking due to the low cracking reactivity of aromatic. Aromatic-friendly hybrid membrane-based pervaporation is recognized as an efficient separation technology attributed to its economy, simplicity, and eco-friendly. Thus, TpPa-SO 3 Ag, a two-dimension COF filler with great compatibility for Pebax, was designed with uniform anchoring of Ag + in pore, which was incorporated into Pebax to construct facilitated transport channel into Pebax-TpPa-SO 3 Ag membrane. By regulating TpPa-SO 3 Ag content, the optimal Pebax-TpPa-SO 3 Ag membrane (1.0 wt%) showed best pervaporation performance with permeation flux of 2.05 kg m −2  h −1 and separation factor of 6.26 over 168 h. Relying on the optimal formulation of flat sheet membrane, hollow fiber hybrid membrane was developed, whose permeation flux (0.43 kg m −2  h −1 ) and separation factor (7.25) was fully maintained during the 168 h continuous pervaporation process for toluene/ n -heptane mixture, opening an avenue for hollow fiber COF hybrid membrane-based pervaporation in the production of high-value petrochemical derivatives.

Hydrophobic DD3R modified by perfluorooctyl-trimethoxysilane incorporates into PEBAX membrane for ethanol recovery via pervaporation

Chengyun Gao,Yuxuan Zhang,Junling Lin,Weijie Sun,Yangyang Wang,Fanhui Meng,Jiayou Liao,Xianjie Meng

A novel class of mixed-matrix membranes was synthesized through strategic integration of Polyether-block-amide (PEBAX) with Deca-dodecasil 3R (DD3R) zeolitic fillers, targeting efficiency-driven ethanol recovery in pervaporation separation systems. The DD3R molecular sieve was synthesized using adamantylamine (ADA) as a structure-directing agent and Sigma-1 seed crystals in a pure silicon precursor system. To improve compatibility with the polymer matrix, the DD3R particles were surface-modified with a silane coupling agent. Comprehensive characterization through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectra (XPS), Water Contact Angle (WCA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), swelling degree tests, and mechanical properties confirmed the successful bonding of the silane coupling agent to both DD3R and PEBAX. The optimized membrane containing 0.75 wt.% DD3R achieved a flux of 1152.06 g/m 2 h and a separation factor of 4.52 at 60 o C with a 5 wt.% ethanol feed concentration, representing a 115 % enhancement in flux and a 68 % increase in separation factor compared to the pristine PEBAX membrane. Additionally, the PEBAX/DD3R membrane displayed excellent long-term stability. This work provided a foundation for developing membranes with DD3R incorporated therein for a wide range of liquid or gas mixture separation processes.

Robust MIL-96 tubular membranes for efficient separation of acetic acid/water mixtures by pervaporation

Yumeng Zhao,Guoshu Gao,Peng Zhu,Cun Liu,Xiongfu Zhang,Feichao Wu,Guohui Yang

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes hold great potential for acetic acid dehydration by pervaporation. However, it remains challenging to develop stable MOF membranes suitable for this application due to the corrosion of membranes by acetic acid. Herein, we report a robust aluminum (Al)-based MIL-96 membrane on porous ceramic tubes for acetic acid pervaporation dehydration. It is prepared by an induction strategy with Al-Sol@MIL-96-C layer, obtained by calcining an Al-based sol layer containing small MIL-96 seeds. The induced layer possesses a sponge-like structure and high reactivity, favoring the uniform growth of MIL-96 crystals and establishing a strong connection between the membrane layer and the support. The achieved MIL-96 membrane, with a thickness of ∼2 μm, exhibits excellent performance in separating 90 wt% acetic acid/water mixtures by pervaporation, showing a high separation factor of ∼3000 with a permeation flux of 1.54 kg/(m 2 ·h). Notably, due to the connectivity of the Al-Sol@MIL-96-C layer, these membranes show long-term operational stability for over 200 h, as well as great tolerance to ultrasonic treatment, highlighting the enormous potential for applications. This work provides a feasible approach to fabricate robust MOF membranes for pervaporation separation of acetic acid/water mixtures.

High-quality silicalite-1/PVA mixed matrix membrane for efficient pervaporation separation of xylene isomers

Wei Chen,Pengfei Wang,Weike Jia,Huidan Zeng

Membrane-based pervaporation process is the most time- and energy-saving method for the separation of xylene isomers. However, developing easily prepared membrane with a high separation factor still remains a significant challenge. Herein, the silicalite-1/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) (SPMMM) with enhanced xylene isomers pervaporation separation performance was successfully fabricated via solution scraping method. The compactness and compatibility of the SPMMM were effectively tuned by optimizing the zeolite content and selecting appropriate cross-linker. Results showed that the SPMMM with 40 % zeolite content, cross-linked with fumaric acid (SPMMM-Fu), exhibited the densest and most continuous membrane structure, the lowest swelling degree and the best xylene compatibility. Pervaporation experiments demonstrated that the SPMMM-Fu exhibited superior xylene isomers selective separation performance compared to the templated-silicalite-1/α-Al 2 O 3 membrane. For the SPMMM-Fu, the maximum separation factor was achieved in binary xylene isomer solutions containing 10 % p-X. The total permeate fluxes in the aforementioned binary p-X/o-X and p-X/m-X isomer solutions were about 43.20 g m −2  h −1 and 34.66 g m −2  h −1 , respectively. The corresponding separation factors of p-X/o-X and p-X/m-X were about 34.65 and 39.73, respectively. The third-stage separation experiment demonstrated that the SPMMM-Fu could produce p-X with a purity ≥99.7 % from binary p-X/o-X isomer solutions. Long-term and variable-temperature pervaporation experiments suggested the SPMMM-Fu had excellent structural stability. Furthermore, reproducibility tests conducted on multiple batches of the SPMMM indicated that the SPMMM-Fu could be produced stably. The scalable experiment demonstrated that our strategy could produce large-area SPMMM-Fu (25 × 40 cm 2 ), exhibiting separation performance similar to that of small membrane coupons. This work presented a potentially low-cost and scalable approach for producing highly dense SPMMM with exceptional xylene compatibility, enabling efficient pervaporation separation of xylene isomers from their mixtures.
