β-Carotene is a hydrophobic molecule that can be isolated from plants that acts as a natural pigmen and nutraceutical. However, the limited water-solubility, oxidative-stability, and bioavailability limit its utilization in functional food, supplement, and pharmaceutical products. Pickering emulsions stabilized by chitosan-phytic acid-cyclodextrin (CS-PA-CD) nanoparticles were prepared to improve the delivery, stability, and bioavailability of β-carotene. The impact of nanoparticle concentration (0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% w/v) and oil phase fraction (30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% v/v) on the stability of β-carotene-loaded Pickering emulsions was investigated. The Pickering emulsions that were most stable to phase separation were formed at intermediate oil concentrations (50%-60% v/v). The encapsulated β-carotene exhibited improved resistance to heating (70 °C) and UV light exposure. Moreover, the bioaccessibility of β-carotene was also improved using a simulated gastrointestinal model. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of CS-PA-CD nanoparticles for forming and stabilizing Pickering emulsion-based delivery carrier for hydrophobic bioactive substances.

Due to bacteria in urine and inadequate blood supply, urethral defect repair faces great clinical difficulties. Inspired by the natural structure of the urethra, in this study, we designed a multifunctional hydrogel urethral patch with a Janus structure. The inner layer was a double-network hydrogel of polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl chitosan (PVA/CMCS) enhanced by natural phytic acid (PA) and Mg 2+ (Mg 2+ -PA/PVA/CMCS). The outer layer was composed of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofibers to form a hydrophobic barrier, coupling via a micelle layer to ensure interfacial bonding. The patch exhibited mechanical properties matching soft tissues, with maximum tensile strength and toughness of 1.69±0.13 MPa and 24.7±0.9 MJ/m 3 , respectively, under the strengthening effect of Mg 2+ -PA chelation. Therein, the 4 % Mg 2+ -PA/PVA/CMCS composite patch could maintain unilateral hydrophobicity for at least 14 days and demonstrated an antibacterial rate of 99.0 %±0.1 % against E. coli . In PBS, the patch could deliver Mg 2+ for at least 7 days and stabilize the surrounding pH environment for up to 28 days. In vitro cell experiments indicated that the 4 % Mg 2+ -PA/PVA/CMCS composite patch could promote the human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) proliferation and migration, with the angiogenic protein expression enhanced more than 1.2 times compared with the Control group. In conclusion, the patch constructed in this study may provide a new approach to clinical urethral injury repair.

Mineral scaling and organic fouling are challenging and co-existing issues that compromise membrane performance in reverse osmosis (RO), but membrane materials possessing both scaling and fouling resistance have not been achieved so far. In this study, thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide membranes were modified with multilayered Ferric-phytic acid (PhA) complexes using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which achieves simultaneous resistance against both silica scaling and BSA fouling. The Ferric-PhA complexes enhanced both hydrophilicity and negative charge, while decreasing the surface roughness of the TFC membrane . The Ferric-PhA assembled membranes exhibited excellent resistance against both individual silica scaling and bovine serum albumin (BSA) fouling in RO desalination, with an increase of layer number resulting in improved membrane performance. The Ferric-PhA assembled membranes further showed remarkably less flux decline compared to the pristine TFC membrane when silica scaling and BSA fouling co-existed. The favorable membrane surface properties imparted by Ferric-PhA complexes reduced the membrane interactions with both silica scalants and BSA foulants effectively, resulting in the exceptional and simultaneous scaling and fouling resistance. Our work demonstrates that it is feasible to achieve dual functions of scaling and fouling resistance of RO membranes by smart surface modification.

Conductive hydrogels have broad application prospects in the field of self-powered sensors and energy harvesting devices due to their good electrical conductivity and flexibility. However, at low temperatures, conductive hydrogels are usually frozen, resulting in problems such as poor electrical conductivity and flexibility, which seriously hinder the application of these fields. To address these challenges, phytic acid (PA) was employed as the crosslinker and antifreezing agent in this study. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), chitosan (CS), and PA were used as raw materials to successfully synthesize PVA/AMPS/CS/PA (PACP) multifunctional conductive hydrogels with outstanding antifreeze and water retention properties (freezing point below −80 °C, 30-day water loss rate of 3.5%). In addition, PACP hydrogels exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity of up to 9.4 S/m, along with antibacterial and biocompatible properties, enabling their utilization as wearable sensors on human skin tissue. Notably, the PACP hydrogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator (PACP-TENG) excels in accurately monitoring human motion and powering small electronic devices, facilitating remote control of small light switches. The resulting open circuit voltage is as high as 314 V at 25 °C and about 110 V at low temperature. Therefore, PACP hydrogels with excellent properties are expected to expand their applications in these fields.

A novel adsorbent (PHPM) was synthesized through the functionalization of N -(2-Hydroxyethyl) acrylamide (HEAA) with phytic acid (PA) and applied for the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. The material was characterized by means of FTIR, TGA, SEM, and XPS. The present study systematically investigated the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial La(III) or Ce(III) concentration, and pH value on the adsorption capacity. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of PHPM for La(III) and Ce(III) were determined to be 198.0 and 186.2 mg·g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, as further confirmed by nonlinear fitting with low RMSE and χ 2 values. Thermodynamic analysis revealed negative Δ G values, positive Δ H and Δ S values, indicating a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven process. Furthermore, PHPM demonstrated high adsorption efficiency toward La(III) and Ce(III), even in the presence of competing ions. A preliminary cost analysis indicated that the preparation of PHPM was economically feasible with low cost. The adsorbent maintained approximately 50% of its initial adsorption capacity after ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The findings demonstrate that PHPM was a promising adsorbent for the recovery of La(III) and Ce(III) from aqueous environments.

The composites of two or more metal oxides/sulfides have been prepared and widely used in energy storage including battery and supercapacitor. However, the composite of two activated carbon component is seldom involved. Moreover, those solid carbon sources block their contact with another carbon source and suppress the construction of rich interfaces between two components in carbon composite. In this work, an epoxy resin (EP)/phytic acid (PA) homogeneous gel is prepared by combining the solvation/de-solvation process at 80 °C and the gelation process at different temperatures (120 °C, 150 °C and 180 °C) so as to supply the rich interfaces between epoxy resin/phytic acid. Subsequently, hydrogen bond crosslinks of hydroxyl groups on the surface of the epoxy resin chains with the phosphate groups of liquid phytic acid as well as ester crosslinks are constructed. Lastly, uniform carbon composites with rich interfaces between the two components from EP and PA are acquired. The optimized activated carbon composite, i.e., AEPC-150 which is gelled at 150 °C possesses micropore-dominant porous structure and thus a high specific surface area of 1642 m 2 g −1 . In addition, AEPC-150-based electrode exhibits a superior capacitance of 435.2 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , in which a high pseudocapacitance domain of 37.2% at 5 mV s −1 (vs. 15.6% for AEPC-120, 11.4% for AEPC-180). The symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) of AEPC-150//AEPC-150 delivers an outstanding energy density of 35.58 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 150 W kg −1 , and 20.83 Wh kg −1 even at 3750 W kg −1 .

The widespread use of malathion (MA) poses significant risks to environmental safety and human health, necessitating the development of highly sensitive detection platforms. Herein, a novel composite was first synthesized by integrating phytic acid (PA) doped polyaniline (PANI) with a bimetallic Cu and Zn zeolitic imidazolate framework (CZ-ZIF), denoted as PCZ-ZIF. Subsequently, the PCZ-ZIF composite was immobilized onto a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode to construct an ultra-sensitive electrochemical sensor (designated as PCZ-ZIF/FTO) for the precise detection of MA. PA bridges PANI and CZ-ZIF via hydrogen bonding and P–O–M coordination. The incorporation of Cu 2+ into the ZIF framework provides a strong affinity toward the P S bond in MA, while the doping of PANI significantly accelerates the interfacial electron transfer. Consequently, the PCZ-ZIF/FTO sensor exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity through a specific two-electron reduction process. Under optimal conditions, the sensor achieves a broad linear detection range from 1 ppt to 10 ppb and an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.210 ppt. Furthermore, the device demonstrates outstanding reproducibility, excellent storage stability, and robust anti-interference capabilities against non-target species. Practical applicability was successfully validated in surface water and groundwater samples, yielding recoveries in agreement with standard high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. Our work presents a highly reliable and promising strategy for the trace-level monitoring of organophosphorus pesticides in real environments.

A novel PA-MIL-88A composite was designed for detection of phytic acid. • Structural optimization through controllable etching provides a new paradigm for the functionalization of MOF materials. • MIL-88A is water-degradable, and PA is natural plant extract. This strategy follows green analytical chemistry guidelines. • The sensor exhibits low LOD and a wide linear range. • The sensor exhibits excellent practical applicability in fruit juice. Ascorbic acid (AA) may cause adverse reactions when consumed in excess, posing conceivable wellness threats to humans. Consequently, accurate detection of AA content in food is crucial for ensuring food safety and safeguarding human health. This work successfully developed an electrochemical sensor based on phytic acid-etched modified MIL-88A (PA-MIL-88A) for detecting AA in juices. The electrochemical performance of the PA-MIL-88A composite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Experimental results indicate that the PA-MIL-88A composite exhibits excellent linearity for AA detection, with a linear range of 10 μM–2640 μM and the limit of detection as low as 2.68 μM. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrated excellent reproducibility, repeatability, and long-term stability. When detecting juice samples, it exhibited significant advantages in recovery rates and relative standard deviation (RSD) values. This work broadens the application of MIL-88A in electrochemical sensing and provides new insights for food detection. Download: Download high-res image (89KB) Download: Download full-size image

Electrodialysis provides a sustainable strategy for acid recovery with operational simplicity and energy efficiency. This study utilized adenine’s basic sites to anchor phytic acid (IP6) and prepared phytic acid-doped adenine-modified sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK x A/IP6) membranes with varying adenine substitutions. The acid-base crosslinking among adenine, phytic acid, and sulfonic acid groups enhances membrane mechanical characteristics and dimensional stability. The breaking strength increased 8 %–22 % relative to the pure SPEEK. The interactions between phytic acid and SO 3 H groups with adenine promote proton transport, while the large planar cationic structure of protonated adenine enhances membrane permselectivity. The SPEEK-40A/IP6 membrane exhibited superior H + flux (2.16 mmol m −2 s −1 ) and H + /Fe 2+ permselectivity (58.5), which is 1.72 times higher than the original SPEEK and surpasses both ASTOM (38.9) and recent reported membranes. These findings indicate the significant potential of SPEEK- x A/IP6 membranes for acidic wastewater acid recovery.

Lignin, a natural macromolecule rich in aromatic rings and hydroxyl groups, holds significant promise in environmentally friendly applications. In this study, a lignin-based flame retardant (lignin–diethylenetriamine–phytic acid, P2N-lig) was synthesized through a Mannich reaction between alkali lignin and diethylenetriamine to introduce nitrogen, followed by phosphorylation with phytic acid to incorporate phosphorus. When P2N-lig were added into PLA composites (T-PLA) which were toughened by TPU and MMT, the T-PLA/P2N-lig composites demonstrated enhanced physicochemical and flame-retardant properties. The 9 wt% T-PLA/P2N-lig formulation exhibited acceptable mechanical performance alongside significantly improved thermal stability and fire resistance, achieving a 39.27% reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR), a 22.88% decrease in total heat release (THR), and a UL-94 V-0 rating. Further evaluation of 3D-printed specimens revealed that the 6 wt% P2N-lig formulation achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) >24%, a UL-94 V-2 classification, and minimal mechanical degradation, demonstrating suitability for 3D printing applications.

Hydrogels have become an important material in the field of wearable flexible electronics owing to their excellent flexibility and adjustable conductivity. However, due to the large amount of free water contained within the hydrogel, it freezes in low-temperature environments, resulting in poor conductivity and mechanical properties. In this study, an ionically conductive hydrogel was developed by introducing phytic acid (PA), a biomass-based antifreezing material. The addition of PA improved the mechanical, adhesion, and electrical properties, as well as the frost resistance of the hydrogel. The PAM/PVA0.15/Gelatin0.02/PA4 hydrogel prepared in this study exhibited an ultrahigh tensile strain (3083%), excellent adhesion (with adhesion strength to pig skin up to 448.45 kPa), and high conductivity (10.07 S m–1). At the same time, PA endowed the hydrogel with good frost resistance and long-term environmental stability. The hydrogel could remain soft even at −20 °C, as well as retain good electrical properties. In addition, an integrated hydrogel sensor exhibited a wide strain response range (1–1000%), excellent stability, and high sensitivity. Moreover, hydrogel sensors were also successfully used for motion and pipeline flow rate monitoring, as well as simple human–computer interaction applications.

This study presents the preparation of a novel composite aerogel material with superior thermal insulation and flame-retardant properties. Using fly ash-based silica aerogel particles as fillers, sodium alginate (SA) as the skeleton, and phytic acid (PA) as the flame retardant, PA/SA/SiO 2 (PSS) composite aerogels were successfully synthesized through a sol-gel process followed by freeze-drying. The PSS aerogels were characterized for their thermal properties using hot-disk thermal analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests, and other analytical techniques. The experimental results demonstrated that the composite aerogel exhibited low thermal conductivity, ranging from 0.0330 to 0.0380 W m −1 K −1 . The PSS composite aerogels achieved a maximum limiting oxygen index of 50.3%, and all samples satisfied the UL-94 V-0 rating with immediate self-extinguishing behavior. Physical cross-linking of PA, SA, and SiO 2 within the composite structure was confirmed through additional analyses. These all indicated the potential of the prepared aerogels for applications in building thermal insulation, high-temperature thermal protection, and fire-resistant materials.
