The development of free-standing hosts represents an effective strategy for enhancing the energy density and cycling stability of lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries. This study proposes a CNT aerogel-modified wood-derived carbon skeleton as a free-standing host for Li S battery cathodes. The anisotropic microchannels of wood are preserved to accelerate electrolyte transport, while the homogeneous filling of CNTs within these microchannels introduces abundant active sites for polysulfide adsorption and a large specific surface area for sulfur loading. Additionally, this design significantly improves the electrical conductivity. The free-standing CBW/CNT@S cathode demonstrated a high initial discharge capacity of 1218.2 mAh g −1 and excellent cycling stability (retaining 900.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1C). Even at 0.5C, it maintained 509.8 mAh g −1 after 600 cycles. Under a high sulfur areal loading of 7.96 mg cm −1 , a discharge capacity of 664.5 mAh g −1 was achieved. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry at varying scan rates confirmed enhanced electrochemical kinetics and improved polysulfide adsorption ability. Overall, the synergistic integration of CNTs with wood-derived carbon hosts serves as a validated strategy for optimizing Li S battery performance, providing foundational insights for the rational design of next-generation energy storage systems.

The development of lithium sulfur (Li-S) battery is considerably limited due to the "shuttle effect" of the soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). The introduction of modified separator at the cathode side is proved to be one of the effective solutions. In this work, TiO nanoflakes (TiO-NFs) with (001) exposed facets were successfully prepared to block the shuttle of LiPSs and improve the redox kinetics at the same time. The employment of the polydopamine (PDA) was confirmed to be helpful on inhibiting the morphology change of TiO-NFs during magnesiothermic reduction reaction process. Through visible adsorption, symmetric cells and Li2S nucleation testing, the TiO-NFs is confirmed to possess excellent adsorption and catalytic activity on LiPSs. The assembled batteries by using TiO-NFs@PP modified separator exhibit the initial capacity of 1492 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C. When the current density reached 1 C, the capacity decay per cycle revealed as low as 0.067% after 1000 cycles. Even under the high sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm -2 , a high areal capacity of 4 mAh cm -2 can be maintained after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. This work provided new methods for the design and preparation of non-stoichiometric metal oxides with specific exposed facets toward high-performance Li-S batteries.

Novel sulfur-rich polymer composites were prepared from the commercial polysulfide rubber through facile vulcanization methods and were firstly used as cathode material for lithium/sulfur batteries. The sulfur enriched in the composites includes three parts, the first part was inserted into the main chains of the polysulfide rubber , the second part formed insoluble polysulfide (-S n -)through self-polymerization and the third part was trapped inside the network of the above two polymer chains. The obtained sulfur-rich polymer composites have high sulfur content over 80%. Compared with the pure sulfur electrode, the composites showed better cycle stability and coulomb efficiency .

Lithium-sulfur batteries with high theoretical energy density have drawn much attention during the past decades, while the shuttle effect of the polysulfide also hinders the practical application. The employment of suitable host materials has been considered as the effective strategy to inhibit the polysulfide migration. In this work, we develop MoO 2 /C composite as sulfur host material to increase the capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries while retaining high capacity after cycles. The MoO 2 /C composite could serves as active sites, effectively adsorbing and catalytically converting polysulfide, thus improving the redox kinetics and reducing shuttle effect. Owing to these merits, the as-prepared MoO 2 /C@S cathodes exhibit high capacity of 1165 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. Meanwhile, the battery exhibits superior rate capability and stable cycling performance.

Single-component transition metal selenide (TMSe) hosts still struggle to balance the adsorption of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) and their catalytic conversion. Herein, a heterostructure host (MoSe 2 -CoSe@C) with an intra-spherical interwoven architecture was synthesized via impregnation-chemical vapor deposition. Benefiting from the synergy of adsorptive MoSe 2 and conductive CoSe, the heterointerface induces electron transfer from CoSe to MoSe 2 , upshifting the d-band center to enhance LPSs adsorption. Compared with their single-component hosts, the MoSe 2 -CoSe@C notably reduces the energy barriers of sulfur redox reactions, decreasing those for Li 2 S oxidation by 31.45 kJ mol −1 and for Li 2 S 4 reduction by 191.67 kJ mol −1 . Additionally, Co acts not only as a core component of the heterostructure but also induces the conversion of carbon-based materials into carbon nanotubes at high temperatures, thus forming a unique interwoven network. This network not only ensures efficient electron transport and inhibits the agglomeration of active components, but also increases the contact area between the host and active sulfur, thereby enhancing the number of effective catalytic sites. Consequently, the MoSe 2 -CoSe@C/S cathode achieves a discharge specific capacity of 582.1 mAh g −1 at a current density of 5C, with only 0.07% capacity decay per cycle over 200 cycles at 4C. This work provides a strategy to construct high-performance adsorption-catalytic hosts for lithium‑sulfur batteries (LSBs).

The traditional separator plays a significant role in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to the customized features that allow ions to transfer freely with low energy barriers. However, in the lithium–sulfur battery, the commercial separator shows feeble ability for promoting the conversion of accumulated long-chain polysulfides to the short-chain polysulfides on the surface of the cathode. In this work, a carbon-intercalated montmorillonite is designed to release the imprisoned capacity of the sulfur cathode by activating the accumulated long-chain polysulfides on the surface of the cathode. Benefiting from the advantages of carbon-intercalated montmorillonite, the lithium–sulfur battery achieves a high discharge capacity of 818 mAh g–1 over 300 cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm–2 with a sulfur loading of 2.6 mg cm–2. The systematic analyses by cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance reveal that the regulation of redox environment on the cathode surface by reducing the accumulated long-chain polysulfides to short-chain sulfides is a scalable solution for constructing the actual lithium–sulfur batteries.

Aimed at the application drawbacks of lithium-polysulfide semiflow battery involved with low utilization of active material and inevitable shuttle effect, a self-supporting porous substrate characterized by high porosity and outstanding conductivity is developed in this study, which consists of cotton-derived nanofiber and graphene wrapped on the nanofiber. Then a gelable polymer poly-(vinylidenefluoride-hexafluoropropylene) is further integrated into the porous substrate for fabricating novel PS gel cathode. The as-prepared composite matrix possesses strong PS adsorption/loading ability by gelation as well as favorable electron/ion transport pathway, which not only provides effective restriction toward PS migration and shuttle, but also actualizes rapid redox conversion of the localized active species. Consequently, the resultant PS gel cathode demonstrates high reversible capacity, and excellent cycle and rate capability even at a high sulfur loading up to 9.0 mg cm −2 .

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising for the next-generation energy storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the shuttle effect and the passive layer between the separator and electrode still affect the cycling stability and coulombic efficiency seriously. Herein, we develop a 10 μm-thick rGO (reduced graphene oxide) and molybdenum phosphide (MoP) composite coating layer on a Celgard separator to improve the electrochemical performance of Li–S batteries. The introduction of such a MoP/rGO coating layer on the separator not only impedes the diffusion of polysulfides to the anode but also improves the sulfur utilization. In particular, the 10 nm MoP nanoparticles are very efficient for the polysulfide adsorption. Compared to the pristine Celgard separator, superior electrochemical performance is obtained in both coin cells and pouch cells with the MoP/rGO coated separator. High areal capacity (∼3 mA h cm−2), good rate performance, and long cycle life (300 cycles) are attained under a sulfur loading of 3.88 mg cm−2. The capacity decay rate is as low as 0.045% per cycle over 300 cycles. In addition, the pouch cells made by the modified separator with a high sulfur loading of 4.6 mg cm−2 achieve good electrochemical performance. At 0.1C, the initial discharge capacity is 1083 mA h g−1, and still remains at 759 mA h g−1 after 120 cycles. The result reveals the potential practical use of this MoP/rGO coated separator for Li–S batteries.

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) from sulfur cathode to lithium (Li) anode is one of the main obstacles for lithium-sulfur (Li−S) batteries. The severe corrosion of Li metal anode by the dissolved LiPSs bottlenecks the efficient operation of Li−S batteries, however, the anode part has not been received much attention compared to those extensive efforts related to the cathode designs. Herein, we show that the interface between Ti 3 C 2 T x (T=−OH, −F)-based MXene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is able to guide uniform Li nucleation, promoting highly reversible and dendrite-free Li plating/stripping. Such the Li anode demonstrates excellent cycling stability for more than 1000 hours even under ultra-high rate (10 mA cm −2 ) and high areal capacity (3 mAh cm −2 ). More importantly, the well-designed 2D layered structure by coupling the Ti 3 C 2 T x with a graphene scaffold, is highly efficient to block the shuttled polysulfides and inhibit the corrosion of the lithium metal anode. As a result, the Li−S full battery exhibits a stable cycling stability with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.8 % over 300 cycles. This work suggests the design strategy of Li metal anode especially targeting at the sulfur cathode, and we hope it can provide valuable inspirations for the future design of Li metal anodes for more practical Li−S batteries. Graphical MXene shield : The rGO/Ti 3 C 2 T x interfaces favor Li nucleation and deposition, contributing to dendrite-free Li plating/stripping behaviors inside the scaffold. The membrane also mitigates the side reactions of Li by blocking the shuttled lithium polysulfides, which promotes the efficient cycling of Li−S batteries.

Lithium–sulfur (Li S) batteries are limited by polysulfide shuttle and kinetically hindered redox react ions. From a bionic perspective, a layered poplar wood-derived carbon (LPWC) scaffold with intrinsic laminar porosity and three-dimensional ion diffusion channels was developed via acid pretreatment and one-step carbonization. The LPWC framework with uniformly distributed ZnTe/CoTe2 provides multidimensional ion/electron transport, modulates local electronic states, and enables synergistic Zn Co catalysis for efficient reactions. Mechanistic insights are experimentally derived, eliminating the need for computational modeling or theoretical simulation. Importantly, thermal treatment at 1200 °C led to an optimized carbon microstructure and uniform distribution of active telluride phases, yielding a high initial capacity of 931.09 mAh g-1, retains 239.01 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 0.1C (retention 25.67%, decay 0.07%·cycle-1). The electrode delivers stable capacities up to 2C, and capacity recovery of 64.09% is maintained when returning to 0.1C, evidencing excellent reversibility. Electrochemical impedance and cyclic voltammetry indicate reduced interfacial resistance and promoted redox kinetics. This approach bridges green fabrication with interface engineering, offering a practical pathway for scalable and durable lithium–sulfur batteries.

The infamous shuttle effect of polysulfides is the main obstacle severely hindering the practical application of Li–S battery . To address such issue, we fabricated a homogeneous ultrathin Ta 2 O 5 layer deposited on separators via typical pulsed laser deposition . The polar surface of the Ta 2 O 5 coating can not only serve as a barrier inhibiting polysulfides shuttling due to strong chemisorption , but also accelerate the redox kinetics of immobilized polysulfides, which was demonstrated by density functional theory calculations and electrochemical experiments. With the Ta 2 O 5 modified separator, the cell using a cathode prepared by nitrogen-doped graphene achieves good rate capability in contrast to the one with bare commercialized separator. Specifically, even at a high areal sulfur loading of 5.27 mg cm −2 , the cell can deliver a high initial areal capacity of 5.3 mAh cm −2 and retains 4.2 mAh cm −2 over 60 cycles, which exceeds commercial lithium-ion batteries (4 mAh cm −2 ), suggesting its actual application possibility.

Currently, severe shuttle effects and sluggish conversion kinetics are the main obstacles to the advancement of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Modification of the battery separator by a catalyst is a promising approach to tackle these problems, but simultaneously obtaining rich catalytic active sites, high conductivity, and remarkable stability remains a great challenge. Herein, a flower-like MXene/MoS2/SnS@C heterostructure as the functional intercalation of Li–S batteries was prepared for accelerating the synergistic adsorption-electrocatalysis of sulfur conversion. The MXene skeleton constructs a three-dimensional conductive network that anchors polysulfides and enhances charge transfer. Meanwhile, the MoS2/SnS has rich active sites for accelerating polysulfide conversion, leading to excellent electrochemical performances. A battery with MXene/MoS2/SnS@C displays an extraordinary capacity of 836.1 mAh g–1 over 200 cycles at 0.5C and demonstrates a remarkable cycling stability with a capacity attenuation of approximately 0.051% per cycle during 1000 cycles at 2C. When the sulfur loading reaches 5.1 mg cm–2, the capacity still maintains 722.4 mAh g–1 over 50 cycles. This research proposes a novel strategy to design stable catalysts for Li–S batteries with an extended lifespan.
