MOF-Ag Nanozyme for Fusobacterium nucleatum Eradication and Enhanced Nanocatalytic Therapy of Colorectal Cancer

Tan Wu,Xuejie Fei,Dan Xu,Qian Chen,Yang Zhang,Yuqin Jin,Yang Yang,Huanlong Qin,Fengzhou Du,Cheng Li

Purpose This study aimed to develop a nanocatalytic-microbial therapeutic platform for colorectal cancer (CRC) that simultaneously eliminates the tumor-associated pathobiont Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) and enhances catalytic tumor therapy. Methods An iron-based metal-organic framework (NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) composed of Fe3+ clusters and 2-aminoterephthalic acid, BDC-NH2) loaded with silver nanoparticles (NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)@Ag, denoted as MA) was constructed to integrate antibacterial activity with reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated tumor killing. The physicochemical properties, catalytic activity, and antibacterial performance of MA were characterized. Extracellular and intracellular ROS generation, cellular uptake, and cytotoxicity were evaluated in CRC cells. In vivo antitumor efficacy and biosafety were further assessed in a CT26 mouse colon cancer cells (CT26) subcutaneous tumor model with or without F. nucleatum inoculation. Results MA exhibited enhanced Fenton-like catalytic activity and generated more hydroxyl radicals than MOF alone in the presence of H2O2, indicating that Ag nanoparticles amplified ROS production. MA also showed potent antibacterial activity against F. nucleatum, enabling concurrent disruption of intratumoral bacteria and tumor cells. In vitro, MA induced pronounced ROS accumulation and significantly reduced CRC cell viability. In vivo, MA markedly suppressed tumor growth, with superior therapeutic efficacy in F. nucleatum-colonized tumors, demonstrating that bacterial elimination contributed substantially to tumor inhibition. No evident systemic toxicity was observed during treatment. Conclusion MA is a promising nanocatalytic platform for CRC therapy that combines direct antibacterial action against F. nucleatum with amplified ROS-mediated tumor cell killing. This dual-target strategy offers an effective and biocompatible approach for CRC treatment by integrating microbiota intervention with nanocatalytic therapy.

The photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) by Ag-doped SnS2 materials under visible light

Yang Zhiquan,He Shan,Liu Wanhui,Zou Baosheng,Liao Wenning,Wang Yin,Wang Caiyun,Li Shuai,Niu Xiaojun

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Efficient degradation of uranium(VI) (U(VI)) in wastewater is an urgent problem because of the chemical toxicity and radiotoxicity. In this study, the Ag x –SnS 2 photocatalysts were compounded by a simple hydrothermal method, effectively removing U(VI) under visible light in water. Compared with SnS 2 , the results indicated that Ag x –SnS 2 would decrease the crystallinity without destroying the crystal structure. Moreover, it has excellent photocatalytic performance on the degradation rate of U(VI). Ag 0.5 –SnS 2 exhibited a prominent photocatalytic reduction efficiency of UO 2 2+ of about 86.4% under optical light for 75 min. This was attributed to Ag-doped catalysts, which can narrow the band gap and enhance absorption in visible light. Meanwhile, the doping of Ag promoted the separation of photoinduced carriers, so that more photogenerated charges participated in the photocatalytic reaction. The stability and reusability were verified by the cycle test and the potential photocatalytic mechanism was analyzed based on the experiment. Ag x –SnS 2 material was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. Ag-doped SnS 2 has excellent optical adsorption capacity and a narrow band gap. Ag x –SnS 2 showed good performance in the photocatalytic reduction of UO 2 2+ . The mechanism of photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) by Ag x –SnS 2 was proposed.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and photodegradation performance of Ag and Cu2O co-decorated TiO2 nanotubes

Xianshu Zheng,Rui Piao,Xueqin Wang,Peng Qiao,Xin Guo,Meiru Zheng,Yanxiu Liu,Yuanyuan Wang,Hua Song,Yanguang Chen,Fuping Feng

In this study, TiO2 nanotubes were synthesized through anodic oxidation and subsequently coated with Ag and Cu2O nanoparticles via a two-step photochemical deposition process. The photocatalytic performance of the samples was further analyzed by the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and photodegradation of Rhodamine B. The Ag/Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes (4.34 at% of Ag and 0.13 at% of Cu) showed optimal photocatalytic performance. The nanocomposite catalyst delivered a photoinduced current density of 0.335 mA cm−2 and achieved 96.7% RhB degradation within 120 minutes of the reaction. The theoretical hydrogen production rate was 5.06 µmol cm−2 h−1, showing a 1.9-fold enhancement over that of pure TiO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and LSV tests further revealed that the Ag/Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes exhibited improved charge transfer properties and hydrogen evolution activity. The performance is ascribed to the built-in p–n heterojunction between Cu2O and TiO2 that promotes carrier separation, further amplified by the intense local electromagnetic field generated through the LSPR effect of Ag, which collectively accelerates both photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen production rate over the Ag/Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes. The methodology developed herein offers a practical guide for constructing novel multifunctional photocatalysts with controlled heterojunctions for diverse applications.

Non-ultraviolet photocatalytic kinetics of NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2/Ag core@comby shell nanostructures

Yongmei Ma,Honglin Liu,Zhenzhen Han,Liangbao Yang,Jinhuai Liu

An effective near-infrared (NIR) active photocatalyst, NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2/Ag (UC@TiO2/Ag) core@comby shell composite, was synthesized by a simple three-step hydrothermal process. Under the full-spectrum light of a Xe lamp in UV-Vis absorbance experiments, about 96% of R6G dyes in solution were degraded by UC@TiO2/Ag in 120 minutes, while only about 64% of the dyes were degraded by pure TiO2 under the same conditions. Under a UV-filtered Xe lamp, about 35% of the dyes were degraded by UC@TiO2/Ag in 120 minutes; interestingly, only about 8% of the dyes were degraded by pure TiO2. Under irradiation by a 785 nm laser in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) experiments, the photodegradation rate constants were 0.02612 s−1 for UC@TiO2/Ag and 0.00046 s−1 for TiO2/Ag, indicating a nearly 58 fold improvement. After deducting the photobleaching effect, the photodegradation rate constants for UC@TiO2/Ag under 633 and 532 nm lasers were 0.00715 s−1 and 0.00565 s−1, respectively, revealing a sharp decrease under irradiation at shorter wavelengths. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis revealed that the presence of UC in this photocatalytic system certainly induced the increase of ˙OH free radicals with NIR irradiation, i.e. the UC core converts NIR light into ultraviolet (UV) light and initiates excellent photocatalytic activity of the TiO2/Ag comby shell. Furthermore, the decorating of Ag nanoparticles not only enhances the photocatalytic ability, but also provides a structural basis for monitoring the photocatalytic kinetics by the SERS technique. By virtue of monochrome laser lines, SERS analysis provides direct evidence to prove the capability of UC-initiated non-UV photocatalysis and the improvement of the utilization of non-UV lights on TiO2. The results revealed that this new photocatalytic platform can efficiently utilize different bands of the solar spectrum and also find new applications in SERS fields.

Microstructural Evolution and Conductivity Enhancement in Ternary Ag–SnO2–In2O3 Composites via Hot Pressing

Bian Meihua,He Yuyin,Deng Shanquan,Zhu Junwei,Peng Jianing

To overcome the inherent limitations of Ag–SnO 2 electrical contact materials, this study employed a combined strategy of In 2 O 3 doping and hot pressing sintering, establishing a direct interrelationship among material composition, microstructural evolution, electrical conductivity, and microstrain. Four Ag–SnO 2 –In 2 O 3 powder compositions were synthesized, and the effects of conventional sintering versus hot pressing sintering on microstructure and functional properties were systematically investigated. Results show that hot pressing sintering enables near-complete densification (99% relative density) and significantly improves hardness by 42.5% (57.3HV), primarily by suppressing interfacial porosity and refining microstructural uniformity. Optimal In 2 O 3 addition (4 wt%) not only facilitates homogeneous phase distribution but also minimizes bulk resistivity (2.52 × 10 −6  O·cm), leading to the highest electrical conductivity (3.98 × 10 5  S/cm). Rietveld refinement reveals a pronounced reduction in microstrain (0.01% for In 2 O 3 , 1.7% for SnO 2 ) in the best-performing samples, directly linking lattice relaxation and phase stability to enhanced electron mobility. This mechanistic insight provides a foundation for the rational design and optimization of advanced Ag-based electrical contact materials.

High-Performance Tailored Ag 2 Se Thermoelectric Networks via Electrodeposition for Body Heat Recovery

Liming Xiao,Fangyuan Yu,Ping Sun,Xiaodong Wang,Linmao Wen,Yunzi Ren,Feng Cao,Jun Mao,Qian Zhang

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT), there has been a significant surge in demand for flexible power supply. However, most existing solutions still face challenges in delivering both a continuous, stable energy supply and excellent mechanical adaptability.Herein, we report a Ag2Se network fabricated via a single-step electrodeposition process, which enables continuous regulation of porosity in the range of 75%-99%. This method leads to the formation of a highly interconnected porous architecture. The optimized network with 92% porosity demonstrates a synergistic enhancement of thermoelectric and mechanical properties, achieving a zT value of 0.38 and excellent strain stability, with only a 6.4% increase in resistance after 1000 compressive cycles. The single-leg device based on this material delivers a high power density of 181.5 μW cm -2 under a temperature difference of 40 K. In comparison, a denser network with 86% porosity, while mechanically rigid, achieves a room-temperature zT of 1.0, outperforming most bulk Ag2Se thermoelectric materials. This work provides an effective strategy to coordinate thermoelectric performance and mechanical flexibility through structural porosity modulation, paving the way for advanced wearable self-powered technologies.

SERS spectral evolution of azo-reactions mediated by plasmonic Au@Ag core–shell nanorods

Mengen Hu,Zhulin Huang,Rui Liu,Ningning Zhou,Haibin Tang,Guowen Meng

The mechanism and application of localized surface plasmon resonance induced photocatalytic reactions remain an issue of interest. In this work, we used Au@Ag core–shell nanorods as a platform for plasmon-driven photocatalysis, which was in situ investigated by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The para-aminothiophenol (PATP) and para-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) adsorbed on the nanorods were irradiated with different excitation wavelengths (633 nm, 785 nm) and transformed into 4,4′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) as evidenced by the emerging Raman peaks at 1142 cm−1, 1390 cm−1, 1440 cm−1, and 1477 cm−1, corresponding to hot carrier dominated oxidation of PATP and reduction of PNTP. Preliminary azo-reaction kinetics and in situ SERS measurements were conducted by comparing the relative intensity ratio of SERS peaks at 1440 cm−1 (DMAB stretching of NN) and 1080 cm−1 (C–S stretching of PATP and PNTP). These results indicate that the catalytic efficiency was dominated by the excitation wavelength as well as the resonance condition between the plasmon band of the nanorods and the excitation line. As a proof of concept, the Au@Ag core–shell nanorods were used to catalyze 4-nitrophenol molecules, and 4-hydroxyazobenzene molecules as the product were confirmed by in situ SERS spectra as well theoretical predictions, showing potential in plasmon driven catalysis and degradation of organic molecules.

Highly Selective Monomethylation of Amines with CO2/H2 via Ag/Al2O3 as a Catalyst

Yan Long,Jie He,Hang Zhang,Yingkang Chen,Kang Liu,Junwei Fu,Hongmei Li,Li Zhu,Zhang Lin,Andrei Stefancu,Emiliano Cortes,Mingshan Zhu,Min Liu

Graphical Ag/Al 2 O 3 catalytic controllable synthesis of N-monomethylated amines by using CO 2 /H 2 as C 1 source has been demonstrated in a first example. The reactivity of methylated amines was reduced by the heterolytic dissociation of H 2 over the catalyst, and hence conversion of various amines to corresponding monomethylated amines was enabled with excellent selectivity. The selective synthesis of monomethylated amines with CO 2 is particularly challenging because the formation of tertiary amines is thermodynamically more favorable. Herein, a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of N-monomethylated amines from primary amines and CO 2 /H 2 is explored. First-principle calculations reveal that the dissociation of H 2 via an heterolytic route reduces the reactivity of methylated amines and thus inhibit successive methylation. In situ DRIFTS proves the process of formation and decomposition of ammonium salt by secondary amine reversible binding with H + on the Ag/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, thereby reducing its reactivity. Meanwhile, the energy barrier for the rate-determining step of monomethylation was much lower than that of overmethylation (0.34 eV vs. 0.58 eV) means amines monomethylation in preference to successive methylation. Under optimal reaction conditions, a variety of amines were converted to the corresponding monomethylated amines in good to excellent yields, and more than 90 % yield of product was obtained.

Designing ultrathin Ag-embedded g-C3N4 nanocomposites for enhanced disinfection performance under visible light

Jinyan Du,Na Xu,Pingchuan Yuan,Qin Shu,Chaofeng Wang,Qidi Xu,Ping Zhang,Shujuan Zhuo,Changqing Zhu

Using ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) as a gas template, we conveniently fabricated ultrathin two-dimensional layered silver-embedded graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (AgCNS) by melamine blowing method with triazine groups of pristine graphite carbon nitride. Compared with bulk g-C 3 N 4 (BCN) and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (CNS), the antibacterial activity of the optimized AgCNS-5 at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 40 ppm against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) was significantly enhanced. Under visible-light irradiation, E. coli could be completely killed by 100 µg·mL −1 of AgCNS-5 within 30 min. The mechanism of enhanced antibacterial activity was systematically investigated by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), photoluminescence spectra (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and photogenerated current densities. Surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with g-C 3 N 4 was found to lead to an enhancement of visible light absorption and an acceleration of photo-induced electron-hole migration/separation, which is responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic bactericidal performance. Through trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) techniques, the bactericidal mechanism was revealed that the species of •O 2 − and •OH play important roles in antibacterial process. Considering the facile preparation and excellent performance, AgCNS-5 may be a promising and competitive visible-light-driven candidate toward sterilizing agent.

Au@Ag-Au core@double shell SERS bioprobes for high-resolution tumor cells imaging

Gul AWIAZ,Xiaoxia WU,Chenguang ZHANG,Ting PAN,Xiawei XU,Jie LIN,Aiguo WU

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique with high sensitivity and specificity, exhibits huge application potential in tumor cells imaging. In this work, Au@Ag-Au core@double shell bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Ag-Au NPs) with excellent biocompatibility and good SERS activity were successfully designed and prepared, and Au@Ag-Au NPs showed uniform size and shape. The results of UV-vis spectra revealed that surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of Au@Ag-Au NPs generated bathochromic shift compared to that of Au@Ag NPs, inducing high SERS activity under 532 nm illumination. The limit of detection (LOD) for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA) molecules adsorbed on Au@Ag-Au NPs was 5 × 10 −9 M, indicating this alloy nanostructure with good SERS detection sensitivity. Moreover, Au@Ag-Au NPs SERS substrate exhibited almost none toxicity from the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay results. Au@Ag-Au@4MBA SERS bioprobe was grafted with reductive bovine serum albumin-folic acid (rBSA-FA), which improving SERS bioprobe stability, and providing specific recognition ability for tumor cells. Importantly, SERS imaging results of HepG2 cancer cells targeted with Au@Ag-Au@4MBA@rBSA-FA bioprobes demonstrated Au@Ag-Au NPs-based SERS bioprobe could effectively recognize tumor cells. This work indicated that high-resolution SERS imaging mode would play an important role in tumor imaging for cancer diagnosis.

Shan-Jiang Wang,Dan Su,Huan-Li Zhou,Xi Yan,Xiao-Yang Zhang,Tong Zhang

In this work, a flexible Janus composites membrane fabricated by large-scale electrospinning, a rapid plasma etching process, and reproducible surface modification is proposed for stable and efficient solar desalination. The upper hydrophobic plasmonic absorbers are used for effective solar absorption while the bottom hydrophilic polymer layer is for water supply and salt resistant. The heat stability and cycle tests demonstrate their superior performance for steam generation (energy conversion efficiency with 76.06% under 6 sun and stable water output with 7.533 kg m −2  h −1 ). Such Janus membrane provides an alternative way for direct solar desalination, which is achieved by a scalable and cost-effective process.

Construction of Ag/Ag2S nanoparticles modified CoSx/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction for boosting photocatalytic organics degradation

Zhentao Song,Limin Wang

In this work, the heterostructure of CoS x /Ag/Ag 2 S/ZnIn 2 S 4 (CAAZ) was synthesized by photodeposition reaction, cation exchange and low temperature solvothermal reaction. The degradation kinetic constants of TC and MO by CAAZ-3 within 60 min were 2.5 and 7.1 times that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively, and CAAZ-3 still maintained good catalytic activity after 5 cycles. ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet is attached to the surface of CoS x hollow structure, which increases the reactive active site and improves the efficiency of light utilization. Notably, the introduction of Ag/Ag 2 S nanoparticles accelerates the conduction rate of photogenerated charge between the interfaces, which is consistent with the results of photochemical tests. It was found that the synergistic interaction of •O 2 - and h + played an important role in the degradation process of TC molecules. This study focuses on the development of photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants and theoretically demonstrates the importance of optimizing conductive interfaces for improving photocatalytic activity.
