Integrated Sandwich-Paper 3D Cell Sensing Device to In Situ Wirelessly Monitor H2O2 Released from Living Cells

Zhuanzhuan Shi,Yunpeng Li,Xiaoshuai Wu,Bo Chen,Wei Sun,Chunxian Guo,Chang Ming Li

Point-of-care testing (POCT) has attracted great interest because of its prominent advantages of rapidness, precision, portability, and real-time monitoring, thus becoming a powerful biomedical device in early clinical diagnosis and convenient medical treatments. However, its complicated manufacturing process and high expense severely impede mass production and broad applications. Herein, an innovative but inexpensive integrated sandwich-paper three-dimensional (3D) cell sensing device is fabricated to in situ wirelessly detect H2O2 released from living cells. The paper-based electrochemical sensing device was constructed by a sealed sandwiched bottom plastic film/fiber paper/top hole-centered plastic film that was printed with patterned electrodes. A new (Fe, Mn)3(PO4)2/N-doped carbon nanorod was developed and immobilized on the sensing carbon electrode while cell culture solution filled the exposed fiber paper, allowing living cells to grow on the fiber paper surrounding the electrode. Due to the significantly shortening diffusion distance to access the sensing sites by such a unique device and a rationally tuned ratio of Fe2+/Mn2+, the device exhibits a fast response time (0.2 s), a low detection limit (0.4 μM), and a wide detection range (2–3200 μM). This work offers great promise for a low-cost and highly sensitive POCT device for practical clinic diagnosis and broad POCT biomedical applications.

Nanoparticles loaded with β-Lapachone and Fe3+ exhibit enhanced chemodynamic therapy by producing H2O2 through cascaded amplification

Yibo Yang,Jia Zhang,Shihe Liu,Xin Zhang,Zhimin Bai,Shuai Wang,Kun Li,Ming Shi,Zhiwei Liu,Jidong Wang,Jian Li

The rapid, irreversible change of active Fe2+ to inactive Fe3+ after the Fenton reaction occurring reduces the chemodynamic therapeutic (CDT) effect. Therefore, manipulation of the tumor microenvironment to provide sufficient hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) while maintaining metal ion catalyst activity is critical for effective CDT. Here, β-Lapachone (LPC) was loaded by mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and coated with polydopamine (PDA) to further chelate Fe3+ and link aptamer AS1411, and a pH-controlled released, chemotherapy-photothermal therapy (PTT)-enhanced CDT-small molecule therapy combination drug delivery system with passive and active tumor targeting was engineered (designated as β-LPC@MSN@PDA/Fe3+-AS1411, LMPFA). The results showed that LFMPA nanoparticles massively accumulated in tumor tissues to achieve tumor targeting through AS1411 mediating and enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Subsequently, PDA released Fe3+ and LPC through acid response to exhibited CDT and chemotherapeutic therapy. Meanwhile, the photothermal effect of PDA promoted the release of LPC from the pores of MSN. LPC exerted chemotherapy effect and cyclically producing of H2O2 by the catalysis of NQO1, which enhanced the CDT activated by Fe3+. In addition, while serving as a targeted ligand, AS1411 could also exhibit a small molecule therapeutic effect by binding to nucleoli of tumor cells. This unique nano delivery system achieved the combination of chemotherapy, PTT, enhanced CDT and small molecule therapy, and fought against malignant tumors synergistically through multi-target and multi-dimension.

Ti-Beta zeotypes with open Ti(OSi)3OH sites for the efficient epoxidation of cyclohexene with H2O2

Bowen Xu,Mengshan Deng,Kehang Lin,Yuexia Wang,Xinqing Lu,Rui Ma,Yanghe Fu,Weidong Zhu

Ti-Beta zeotypes, possessing three-dimensional 12-membered ring pore-opening channels, have shown some superior catalytic performance in the epoxidation of bulky cycloalkenes with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in comparison with other titanosilicate zeotypes. However, some further improvement on the catalytic activity and selectivity of Ti-Beta zeotypes is still demanded for the industrialization of cycloalkenes epoxidation. In the present work, the catalytic performance of Ti-Beta in cyclohexene epoxidation was significantly improved via the transformation of their closed Ti(OSi) 4 sites into the open Ti(OSi) 3 OH ones by a simple NH 4 F treatment. Based on the extensive characterization results, it is found that the NH 4 F-treated Ti-Beta zeotypes with open Ti(OSi) 3 OH sites, named OH-Ti-Beta, possess a stronger Lewis acidity that is favorable to the production of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) from the epoxidation of cyclohexene with H 2 O 2 , compared to the parent Ti-Beta with closed Ti(OSi) 4 sites. Moreover, OH-Ti-Beta catalysts are reusable after the calcination of the deactivated zeotypes. Hence, it is expected that the current developed NH 4 F treatment can obtain efficient OH-Ti-Beta catalysts industrially applied in cyclohexene epoxidation.

Ultrafast charge transfer in TiO2/Py-HOF S-scheme heterojunction for highly photocatalytic H2O2 production and sterilization

Yanyan Zhao,Jing Zhang,Xiaolong Li,Hailun Su,Lin Yang,Jianjun Zhang

A stable Py-HOF was prepared by employing H 4 TBAPy as precursor. • A TiO 2 /Py-HOF composite with excellent photocatalytic activity was constructed. • T/Py-HOF shows stability due to strong H-bonds and π–π interactions of H 4 TBAPy. • S-scheme charge transfer pathway was verified via ISI-XPS, fs-TAS, and DFT. • T/Py-HOF display good photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production yield and sterilization. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) hold substantial potential for application in photocatalysis. However, their practical application in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation and antibacterial activity remains hampered by intrinsically inefficient electron-hole separation and inadequate structural stability. Herein, a Py-HOF photocatalyst was prepared by employing 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic acid) pyrene (H 4 TBAPy) as precursor via self-assembly method, and the titanium dioxide/Hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TiO 2 /Py-HOF, T/Py-HOF) S-scheme heterojunction was rationally fabricated via an in-situ synthesis. Due to the strong hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions of H 4 TBAPy, the T/Py-HOF S-scheme heterojunction displays super stability. Furthermore, in-situ irradiated XPS, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and DFT calculations verify the S-scheme carrier migration mechanism within the T/Py-HOF heterojunction. Thanks to the ultrafast charge-transfer and excellent redox ability of the T/Py-HOF S-scheme photocatalyst, the optimally formulated T/Py-HOF-5% achieves a remarkable H 2 O 2 production rate of 1890 μmol g −1 h −1 , corresponding to approximately 15.24 and 6.19-fold enhancements compare to the pure TiO 2 and bare Py-HOF, respectively, along with excellent stability. Furthermore, the T/Py-HOF heterojunction also exhibits superior photocatalytic sterilization activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) , achieving almost 100% of E. coli inactivation after 90 min light irradiation. Collectively, this work offers a novel insight for designing high-efficiency HOF-based S-scheme photocatalysts in energy and environment applications. A novel TiO 2 /Py-HOF S-scheme heterojunction was fabricated for efficient photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production and excellent photocatalytic E. coli sterilization. Coupling local oxygen enrichment with FeN5-mediated H2O2 activation for energy-efficient electro-Fenton oxidation of sulfamethoxazole

Xuedong Zhang,Lele Ni,Mustafa Evren Ersahin,Hale Ozgun,Guoshuai Liu

Synergistic microenvironment enables low-energy electro-Fenton SMZ degradation. • Amino-CNT site enhances oxygen utilization and FeN 5 boosts •OH generation. • Stable SMZ removal over 20 cycles and across pH 3–11 and real water matrices. The practical effectiveness of the electro-Fenton (EF) technology is severely constrained by sluggish oxygen mass transport and inefficient activation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Herein, a synergistic catalytic microenvironment was constructed by integrating a biomimetic FeN 5 single-atom nanozyme with an amino-functionalized carbon nanotube support (CNT−NH 2 ) to overcome these dual challenges. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the −NH 2 groups on CNT−NH 2 induce a local oxygen-enriched interface, significantly enhancing oxygen (O 2 ) supply and promoting the 2e − oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR) for efficient in situ H 2 O 2 generation. Simultaneously, the FeN 5 sites facilitate hydroxyl radical (•OH) production by mimicking peroxidase activity, thereby lowering the activation energy for O−O bond cleavage in H 2 O 2 . The resultant FeN 5 −CNT−NH 2 EF system achieves complete degradation of sulfamethoxazole (100% in 45 min) with a remarkably low specific energy consumption (0.0235 kWh g −1 TOC), and demonstrates excellent stability and broad applicability in complex water matrices. This work provides a novel perspective for constructing high-performance EF process through synergistic microenvironment engineering. Synergistic Ni–MoO3 Redox Catalysis in MIL‐101(Cr) for Efficient H2O2 Activation and Ultra‐Deep Desulfurization

Huan V Doan,Huong T T Tran,Duyen T Le,Xuan N Pham

In this study, a novel Ni–MoO 3 @MIL‐101(Cr) composite catalyst was synthesized via a one‐step hydrothermal method for the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The catalyst combines the high specific surface area of MIL‐101(Cr) with the redox properties of Ni–MoO 3 , providing an effective synergy between adsorption and catalytic oxidation. The incorporation of Ni as a promoter significantly enhances catalytic activity, enabling complete sulfur removal (∼100%) under mild conditions (50 °C) within 60 min. Structural characterizations (scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and SAED) reveal that the catalyst retains its nanosheet–nanorod morphology and crystalline MoO 3 phase after repeated use, with only a slight decrease in the crystallinity of the MIL‐101(Cr) framework. Mechanistic analyses using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, and temperature‐programmed reduction demonstrate that surface oxygen vacancies and Lewis acid sites promote ODS activity, while highly dispersed Ni–MoO 3 species facilitate H 2 O 2 activation and Mo 6+ /Mo 5+ redox cycling, leading to efficient generation of reactive oxygen species. The catalyst also exhibits excellent stability, maintaining 98.7% DBT conversion after five cycles. These results demonstrate that the strong Ni–Mo synergistic effect and efficient oxygen activation make Ni–MoO 3 @MIL‐101(Cr) a robust and highly efficient catalyst for deep fuel desulfurization. This study presents a significant advancement in the field of oxidative desulfurization by developing a synergistic Ni–MoO 3 redox catalytic system confined within the porous MIL‐101(Cr) framework. Unlike conventional catalysts, the designed material effectively enhances H 2 O 2 activation through cooperative interactions between Ni and Mo species, enabling rapid and ultra‐deep removal of refractory sulfur compounds under mild conditions. The integration of redox‐active sites with a high‐surface‐area MOF support not only improves catalytic efficiency but also ensures excellent stability and recyclability. This work provides new insights into the rational design of bimetallic catalysts for green fuel purification and offers a promising strategy for achieving sustainable and energy‐efficient desulfurization processes.

Construction of an S-Scheme ZnIn2S4/C3N4 Heterostructure for Photocatalytic H2O2 Generation: Performance Evaluation and Mechanistic Insights

Yangfan Du,Guanglong Jing,Keyi Han,Xin Zhang,Liang Hou,Yong Li

The global demand for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) continues to increase, and photocatalytic H2O2production is regarded as a promising alternative technology due to its mild, safe, and environmentally friendly characteristics. ZnIn2S4has demonstrated promising application potential in photocatalytic H2O2production owing to its unique two-dimensional layered structure and broad spectral response. However, its performance is severely limited by rapid charge recombination and sluggish charge migration. To address this challenge, a ZnIn2S4/C3N4S-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed via a simple oil-bath method by assembling ZnIn2S4nanoflowers on C3N4nanosheets. Systematic structural characterizations and performance evaluations demonstrate that the construction of the S-scheme heterojunction effectively promotes the spatial separation and surface migration of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby significantly enhancing photocatalytic activity. Under optimal conditions, the ZIS/CN-10 sample (C3N4to ZnIn2S4mass ratio of 10%) achieves the highest photocatalytic H2O2production rate of 825.8 μmol g−1h−1. This work provides new insights and theoretical guidance for the rational design of efficient and stable ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts.

CuPDA@CaO2@Qu: A pH-responsive H2O2-self-supplying nanozyme for stage-programmed therapy of infected wounds

Li He,Cuiqing Yu,Qiuyu Feng,Aimin Wu,Yunchun Li,Xianxiang Wang

Developing intelligent antibacterial platforms that dynamically modulate therapeutic activities in response to microenvironmental cues is essential to overcome the self-limiting nature and collateral oxidative damage of conventional chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Herein, a multifunctional and self-adaptive nanozyme platform, denoted as CuPDA@CaO 2 @Qu, is developed. It rationally integrates a copper-based metal-organic gel (CuPDA) for pH-dependent enzyme-mimetic switching, calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) for endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) self-supply, and the natural flavonoid quercetin (Qu) to reinforce anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions, collectively enabling synergistic and stage-programmed therapy of infected wounds. Specifically, in acidic infected microenvironments, the peroxidase-mimic CuPDA catalyzes CaO 2 -derived H 2 O 2 into highly toxic hydroxyl radical (·OH), effectively disrupting biofilms and eradicating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, with enhanced efficacy through glutathione depletion. After bacterial clearance, CuPDA self-switches to antioxidant mode, exhibiting superoxide dismutase-glutathione peroxidase mimetic activities that synergize with Qu to scavenge excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), resolve inflammation, and promote M2 macrophage polarization. Moreover, the nanocomposite is capable of promoting cellular migration, collagen deposition, and neovascularization, significantly accelerating tissue healing. This self-adaptive platform demonstrates potent efficacy in MDR bacterial-infected wounds and offers a promising strategy for intelligent nanomedicine design.

Polypyrrole-decorated resorcinol-formaldehyde microspheres for sustainable in-situ H2O2 photocatalytic generation and eco-friendly pollutant removal

Congcong Zhang,Mei Hong,Bi Zhao,Yunhang Jin,Jiafeng Zhu,Benying Liu,Xiaojian Zhou,Yin Zhang

The development of sustainable and efficient systems for the complete degradation of organic pollutants under mild conditions remains a major environmental challenge. Conventional Fenton systems often rely on externally supplied H 2 O 2 , which introduces storage and transport risks as well as additional operational costs. In this work, a polypyrrole-decorated resorcinol-formaldehyde microsphere (PPy/RF) photocatalyst was rationally constructed via in-situ oxidative polymerization to integrate photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation and photo-Fenton oxidation within a single platform. The donor-acceptor (D-A) interfacial structure formed between PPy and RF effectively broadens visible-light absorption, accelerates charge transfer, and facilitates efficient in-situ H 2 O 2 formation. More importantly, the generated H 2 O 2 directly participates in the photo-Fenton process with Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling, leading to the continuous generation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ). Under visible-light irradiation, the optimized PPy/RF-0.07 exhibited a markedly enhanced H 2 O 2 production rate (727.56 μM h −1 ) due to the D-A interfacial structure between RF and PPy promotes oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and water oxidation reaction (WOR). Subsequently, it achieved an outstanding degradation efficiency (>99%) toward phenol, dyes, and antibiotics, outperforming conventional systems that require external H 2 O 2 dosing. This superior performance originates from the synergistic effects of enhanced interfacial charge separation, in-situ H 2 O 2 self-supply, and photo-Fenton-driven radical oxidation. This work demonstrates a self-sustaining photo-Fenton-like system that eliminates the dependence on external oxidants, offering a new insight for solar-driven advanced oxidation processes and sustainable wastewater treatment.

Self-floating COF-based Janus film: A robust triphase interface boosting charge separation for efficient H2O2 photosynthesis

Ying Li,Yuxin Zhang,Wenjie Shi,Chao Zhang,Qinbai Yun,Zongyang Liu,Fuli Ye,Jun Guo,Qingle Yuan,Wenqiang Li,Miao Wang,Xiaotao Zhang,Wenping Hu,Kuo Yuan,Di-chang Zhong,Tongbu Lu

H 2 O 2 photosynthesis, as a gas-liquid-solid reaction, faces two giant challenges, i.e., charge recombination and sluggish oxygen transport. For improving efficiency, it is a feasible strategy to construct a robust triphase interface with optimized charge kinetics. Herein, we constructed a self-floating covalent-organic framework (COF)-based film with Janus heterostructure, i.e., COF-[NH 2 -GO]. In overall H 2 O 2 photosynthesis, COF-[NH 2 -GO] exhibited the highest yield among COF film and powder, signifying improved separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The photocatalytic triphase system achieved 5,306.6 μmol·m −2 ·h −1 H 2 O 2 yield, higher than that of diphase counterpart, ascribed to the promoted O 2 delivery. It was demonstrated that excellent photocatalytic performance was attributed to the improved charge kinetics and mass transfer. A prototypical film-based device was designed for photosynthesis and collection of H 2 O 2 , which exhibited bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli . More importantly, this strategy could be extended to other COFs and functional nanomaterials. This work provides new insights for challenging triphase photocatalysis.

Regional topological engineering of imine/hydrazone COFs enables acid-free photoinduced self-protonation for photocatalytic H2O2 production

Linhai Sun,Jianhong Hu,Busheng Wang,Baoxin Ge,Pengyang Jiang,Yuqi Zeng,Caijin Huang,Kaining Ding

Regional topological regulation of charge transport and proton-transfer dynamics. • Acid-free photoinduced self-protonation and cooperative proton transfer. • Catalytic and preparative validation of the proposed strategy. The inherent trade-off between electron transport efficiency and proton transfer dynamics in COFs is a fundamental limitation for its application in photocatalysis. Herein, we report a regionalized topology engineering strategy that molecularly programs the stoichiometric ratio and regional arrangement of imine and hydrazone linkages within DABH-COF, thereby coordinating charge transport and proton-transfer kinetics. This tailored structure enables photo-triggered protonation under visible light, whereby dynamic imine bonds undergo in-situ protonation to create a proton-rich microenvironment that favors the 2e − ORR, while adjacent hydrazone bonds facilitate rapid proton transfer through a hydrogen-bond network. DFT calculations show that this cooperative effect lowers the free-energy requirement for *OOH formation from 0.26 to 0.20 eV during the 2e − ORR, thereby favoring electron–proton transfer. Moreover, the achievement of gram-scale synthesis (1.2 g) of highly crystalline DABH-COF addresses scalability challenges in COF production. DABH-COF exhibits a superior visible-light-driven H 2 O 2 -production rate of 4340 μmol g −1  h −1 without any sacrificial agents and an AQY of 12.4% (420 nm). This study provides a way for constructing effective COF-based photocatalysts through regional topology engineering. Through regionalized topology engineering, the imine and hydrazone bonds are molecularly programmed by monomer connectivity within DABH-COF, which enables in-situ protonation and synergistical electron–proton dynamics for high-performance photocatalysis. H2O2–Activatable Peptide Nanozyme–Alginate Dual-Network Hydrogel Coating Reconciling Antibacterial and Moisture Retention in Postharvest Preservation

Xiaofang Li,Dankui Liao,Qian Zhou,Lei Wang,Lixia Sun,Zhangfa Tong,Jianhua Sun,Zurong Zhang,Dingyu Li,Guangzhi Zhou

Nearly 40% of fruits spoil annually before consumption, yet reconciling the contradiction between dehydration-induced shriveling and high-humidity-facilitated microbial decay in biomass coatings without invoking antimicrobial resistance and biosafety concerns remains an unsolved challenge. We addressed this by fabricating a dip-coated dual-network hydrogel comprising self-assembling peptide nanoenzyme filaments (SPEFs) embedded in Ca2+-cross-linked sodium alginate (SPEF-CaAlg), which exhibits enhanced mechanical properties and sustained catalytic readiness. The interpenetrating network provided controlled water retention (∼300% equilibrium swelling) to prevent tissue desiccation while maintaining dimensional stability. Upon periodic spraying of dilute H2O2 solution, the embedded nanoenzymes catalytically generate •OH on demand, achieving >90% bacterial reduction against E. coli and S. aureus and inhibiting biofilm formation; concurrently, the aqueous phase replenishes transpiration-induced water losses. This creates an integrated preservation microenvironment that sustains both hydration and antibacterial protection. In strawberry preservation tests, the coating maintained by intermittent H2O2 misting reduced weight loss from 55 to 37%, maintained higher firmness (8.1 vs 6.7 N/cm2), preserved soluble solids (only 8% loss), and extended shelf life to 8 days with excellent biocompatibility. This replenishable catalytic hydrogel strategy offers a sustainable, safe, and efficient solution for postharvest fruit preservation, paving the way for active food preservation systems with on-demand functionality.
