Objective:This study aims to engineer a novel nanoparticle formulation for combined tumor therapy, designated as PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs, which comprises a polydopamine/manganese dioxide (PDA@MnO2) core alongside survivin-targeting siRNA and cyclo(RGD-DPhe-K)-targeting moiety. Methods: The PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs were constructed and subjected to detailed characterization. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was employed to quantify manganese content. To assess siRNA stability within the system, samples were incubated with 50% fetal bovine serum (FBS) before agarose gel electrophoresis analysis. Additionally, cellular internalization by 4T1 cells and in vitro photothermal conversion efficiency of the formulation were evaluated. ICP-OES was further utilized to investigate the in vivo pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of manganese. Animal model studies were conducted to assess the anti-breast cancer efficacy of PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs in combination with infrared irradiation. Results: The newly developed PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs demonstrated superior siRNA protection, reduced toxicity, and high photothermal conversion capacity. When combined with photothermal therapy (PTT), these nanoparticles exerted enhanced synergistic anti-tumor effects. Delivery of survivin siRNA resulted in a significant downregulation of survivin protein expression in tumor tissues. Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed that the nanoparticles possess favorable imaging properties. Conclusions: This research demonstrates that the integration of PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs with PTT holds considerable therapeutic promise for improved breast cancer treatment.

Nowadays, new demands for improving living standards have posed novel challenges to traditional home textiles, and the development of nano-engineered functional textiles for improving indoor environmental quality has garnered considerable interest. However, the potential toxicity and poor fastness of nanoparticles have significantly impeded their applications in textiles. Herein, a facile strategy for synthesizing manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) was presented through a hydrothermal method by using natural polysaccharides such as inulin, chitosan oligosaccharide, and alginate as reductants. The ‘one-stone-three-birds’ behaviors of natural polysaccharides were thoroughly explored, including reducing permanganate into MnO 2 , directing the assembly of nanoparticles, and ensuring their stability in aqueous solutions. Notably, inulin can efficiently regulate the synthesis of MnO 2 particles, and as-prepared MnO 2 exhibited distinct flower-like morphologies with higher crystallinity, rich surface adsorbed oxygen species, and encouraging ability of formaldehyde (HCHO) removal and antibacterial activity. Furthermore, without supplemental binder or catalyst, the multifunctional textile of C-MnO 2 was readily fabricated by simply immersing cotton fabric into MnO 2-Inu solution, and the obtained textile demonstrated satisfactory antibacterial performance under both dark and light irradiation conditions. Moreover, the obtained HCHO removal and UV-blocking properties were also encouraging. This inulin-dominated reduction and template synthesis of MnO 2 particles was first reported, and the presented technique of regulating particle synthesis and textile decoration paves the way for the application fields in multifunctional and sustainable home textiles.

Multi-component electrolyte additives may significantly contribute to improving the performance of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, we propose a mixed electrolyte system employing polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) and quaternized kraft lignin (QKL) as co-additives in Zn//MnO2batteries. Reduced corrosion and the suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction on the zinc electrode were achieved when 0.5 wt.% of PEG200 and 0.2 wt.% of QKL were added to the reference aqueous electrolyte. This optimized electrolyte, 0.5% PEG200 + 0.2% QKL, was conducive to improving Zn reversibility in Zn//Zn symmetric batteries and resulted in higher cycling stability, with a coulombic efficiency of 98.01% under 1 mA cm−2and 1 mAh cm−2for Zn//Cu cells. Furthermore, Zn//MnO2full batteries with 0.5% PEG200 + 0.2% QKL presented good overall electrochemical performance and exhibited a decent discharge capacity of around 85 mAh g−1after 2000 cycles at 1.5 A g−1. As confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, a dominant (002) oriental dendrite-free Zn deposition was achieved on the zinc anode of the battery using 0.5% PEG200 + 0.2% QKL, and the byproducts were also reduced significantly. This study has contributed to the development of electrolyte co-additives for zinc-ion batteries.

Size-controlled cubic–octahedral HKUST-1 is synthesized for modifying both inner and outer walls of hollow microtubes. • The Mn 3 O 4 -derived MnO 2 @HKUST-1 hollow composite micromotor integrates pollutant adsorption-enrichment with redox-mediated catalytic degradation within a unified platform. • Controlled HKUST-1 crystal size and deposition enabled uniform coating on hollow MnO₂ microtubes, enhancing pollutant enrichment while preserving catalytic sites and self-propulsion. In this study, cotton was employed as a biological template, and a size-controlled octahedral HKUST-1 structure was constructed via a combined calcination and hydrothermal process. Subsequently, a hollow tubular MnO 2 @HKUST-1 composite micromotor, derived from Mn 3 O 4 , was successfully fabricated. Under H 2 O 2 -driven conditions, the as-prepared micromotor exhibits stable autonomous motion and enables efficient removal of methylene blue (MB). Under optimized reaction conditions, a 90.4% removal efficiency was achieved within 10 min, and complete degradation was reached within 40 min. Kinetic and mechanistic analyses indicate that HKUST-1 primarily contributes to pollutant enrichment via its porous structure, whereas MnO 2 is responsible for H 2 O 2 activation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This work, for the first time, proposes a structural design principle for MOF-based micromotors that differs fundamentally from conventional MOF-coating strategies. Rather than improving performance by increasing MOF coverage or forming dense, continuous MOF coatings, the crystal size and deposition behavior of HKUST-1 were deliberately regulated to achieve a uniform yet non-continuous distribution over the inner and outer surfaces of hollow MnO 2 microtubes. This architecture simultaneously enhances pollutant enrichment, preserves the accessibility of MnO 2 catalytic sites, and maintains autonomous micromotor propulsion, thereby establishing a rational design principle for integrating adsorption, catalytic activity, and self-propulsion in multifunctional MOF-based environmental micromotors. Electrochromic dynamic windows represent an attractive avenue for enhancing the energy-saving efficiency of buildings. However, the practical application of dynamic windows remains in its infancy due to challenges related to efficient optical modulation and cost-effective manufacturing. Herein, we report an all-in-one electrochromic dynamic window through synergetic electrodeposition of CuBi and MnO 2 , featuring a simplified three-layer configuration. The synergy of dual electrodeposition, coupled with Br − /Br 3 − redox pair, endows the CuBi//MnO 2 system with reversible color transitions between transparent and brown-black states. Benefiting from a well-balanced charge distribution, the CuBi//MnO 2 system demonstrates superior photothermal regulation in the visible-near-infrared region, including large optical modulation of 90.6% at 500 nm and 58% at 1100 nm, short response time of 16.1/12.9 s at 500 nm and 21.4/8.1 s at 1100 nm in coloration/bleaching processes. Outdoor test indicates that the assembled large-size dynamic window can lower the temperature by 5 to 10°C within a homemade house. Further simulation suggests that implementing the dynamic window can reduce annual energy consumption in buildings by up to 95.7 MJ/m 2 and decrease average CO 2 emissions by 18.8 kg/m 2 in subtropical regions of China. Our work offers a straightforward and effective strategy for developing low-cost energy-saving dynamic window technologies.

Diabetic wound healing is substantially impaired by biofilm infections, oxidative stress, and persistent hypoxia, which present major challenges for timely diagnosis and treatment. In this study, theranostic nanoparticles (NPs) were engineered to facilitate lipase-triggered biofilm theranostics and accelerate wound healing. Theranostic Mn-TC NPs were prepared by grafting a fluorescent sonosensitizer, meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (TCPP), onto manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanoflowers, quenching the fluorescence emissions of TCPP. Upon encountering biofilms in vivo, the elevated lipase hydrolyzes ester linkages within the Mn-TC NPs, liberating TCPP to restore its fluorescence emission and enabling the real-time visualization of biofilm-infected wounds. MnO 2 nanoflowers offer abundant reaction sites for TCPP grafting while enhancing the catalysis of hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen. The boosted oxygen evolution promoted the sonodynamic therapy effect of ultrasound-activated TCPP, achieving 94.0% reduction in biofilm biomass and 99.9% bacterial clearance. Engineering NPs accelerate wound healing by simultaneously eradicating biofilms, modulating inflammatory states, enhancing collagen deposition, and promoting angiogenesis. This study presents a novel theranostic strategy for biofilm-triggered visual imaging and an antibiotic-free therapy for diabetic wounds.

Cancer remains a leading global cause of death, with conventional treatments often limited by toxicity and recurrence. Recent advances in gene therapy and nanodrug delivery offer new avenues for precision oncology. Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) are overexpressed in many cancers and linked to apoptosis and ferroptosis, respectively. Here, we developed a manganese dioxide nanosheet (MnO2-NS) probe co-loaded with antisense oligonucleotides targeting hTERT and GPX4 mRNA to synergistically down-regulate both genes and induce dual cell death pathways. The probe, assembled via adsorption of fluorescently labeled antisense strands, showed controllable release in the presence of glutathione (GSH). Cellular uptake and antisense release were confirmed in multiple cancer cell lines. The MnO2-NS probe significantly suppressed cell proliferation, outperforming single-target or carrier-only controls. Molecular analyses confirmed reduced hTERT and GPX4 expression, along with GSH depletion, ROS accumulation, and elevated lipid peroxidation—collectively promoting enhanced cancer cell death. In summary, this MnO2-NS-based co-delivery system enables synergistic gene silencing and GSH depletion, enhancing antitumor efficacy and providing a promising strategy for multifunctional nanotherapy.

The ecological risks from antibiotic residues in water require advanced treatment methods that ensure not just degradation but also complete detoxification. This study develops a highly efficient system coupling dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor with an α-MnO 2 /cellulose acetate (CA) catalytic membrane for the removal and detoxification of trimethoprim (TMP). The catalytic efficiency of the α-MnO 2 /CA films was assessed through comparative experiments within the DBD system, both with and without the films. Key performance indicators included the degradation kinetics of trimethoprim (TMP) in synthetic wastewater, energy efficiency, and reduction rates of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Using response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal conditions for degrading 20 mg/l of TMP were identified as 171.4W, 160 Hz, 5% catalyst loading, and a flow rate of 1200 ml/min, achieving a removal efficiency of 95.48% in 30 min. Variations in solution pH and the concentrations of H 2 O 2 and O 3 were monitored to confirm the catalytic function of α-MnO 2 /CA films. Additionally, quenching experiments demonstrated that free radicals contribute to degradation efficiency, ranking 1 O 2 > · O 2 − > · OH. A comprehensive toxicity assessment combining ECOSAR predictions and in vivo zebrafish embryo tests, confirmed the complete detoxification of the effluent, removal of neurobehavioral toxicity, and oxidative stress. Most importantly, restoring dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) activity offered direct molecular-level proof that TMP's natural bioactivity was eliminated. This highlights that the DBD-α-MnO 2 /CA system exhibits lower toxicity and minimal bioaccumulation potential, positioning it as an environmentally safe and promising alternative to conventional methods for sustainable, large-scale applications.

The widespread misuse of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has become a growing concern due to their severe threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Current adsorption technologies face limitations including low capacity, poor efficiency for trace-level contaminants, and unclear removal mechanisms. These limitations stem from poorly optimized pore architectures and surface chemistries in existing materials, necessitating the development of multifunctional adsorbents with tailored active sites. Herein, a series of MnO2/UiO-66-x composites were rationally designed via a solvothermal approach and comprehensively characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, N2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zeta potential analysis. Systematic optimization demonstrated that MnO2/UiO-66-1 (5 mg) achieved exceptional adsorption capacity (qmax = 659.49 mg·g–1) for diclofenac sodium (DCF, 20 mg·L–1, 30 mL), with >90% removal within 10 min (k2 = 0.0081 g·mg–1·min–1). Mechanistic studies revealed that this performance was attributed to hierarchical porosity (micro-/mesopores), which enables size-selective uptake, synergistic binding, and pH-dependent electrostatic enhancement. Structure–activity relationships indicated that NSAIDs adsorption efficiency (naproxen ≈ ibuprofen ≈ ketoprofen > indomethacin > paracetamol) was governed by molecular structure, size, and pKa values. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies confirmed a spontaneous (ΔG0 < 0), endothermic (ΔH0 > 0), and entropy-driven (ΔS0 > 0) process dominated by chemisorption through synergistic interactions (including coordination bonding, hydrogen bonding, Lewis acid–base effects, electrostatic attraction, and π–π stacking). This study establishes a new paradigm for metal–organic-framework-based adsorbent design through precise control of metal–organic interfaces and defect engineering. With 87% capacity retention after 5 regeneration cycles, MnO2/UiO-66-x shows strong potential for practical water remediation applications.

Aqueous rechargeable batteries relying on the two-electron MnO2/Mn2+ deposition/dissolution chemistry offer a high theoretical capacity (616 mAh g-1). However, their practicality is hampered by the disproportionation of Mn3+ intermediates and the irreversible buildup of electrochemically inert MnO2 deposits, which severely compromise the reversibility of the MnO2/Mn2+ conversion process and undermine long-term cycling stability. To overcome these issues, we propose an Fe2+-induced shuttle-catalysis strategy with a rationally designed three-dimensional (3D) conductive carbon scaffold. Specifically, Fe2+ was introduced as a redox mediator to catalytically accelerate MnO2 dissolution via MnO2 + 2Fe2+ + 4H+ → Mn2+ + 2Fe3+ + 2H2O, enabling high MnO2/Mn2+ conversion efficiency. Simultaneously, a carbon nanotube‑decorated carbon cloth serves as the conductive current collector, offering abundant disproportionation sites for the diffused Mn3+ and sufficient electron‑transport pathways to guide uniform MnO2 growth. As a result, the optimized MnO2/Mn2+ cathode achieves exceptional stability over 7000 cycles at 3 mAh cm-2 and remarkable rate capability with negligible capacity loss at 60 mA cm-2. When paired with a Sn anode in a full‑cell configuration, the battery exhibits stable cycling for more than 1800 cycles, and practical functionality demonstrated by powering a light-emitting diode.

Abstract Comprehensive treatment of indoor air pollution (including formaldehyde and PM2.5) using functional fiber filter materials has received increasing attention. This paper describes the preparation of a functional fiber with an adsorption-catalytic degradation performance for formaldehyde; mesoporous MnO2 is constructed on the surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based activated carbon nanofibers (ACNF) using a redox hydrothermal method. A wet non-woven fabric/melt-blown non-woven/MnO2@ACNF (WNF/MnO2@ACNF/MB) composite air filter is then prepared based on this fiber membrane. Under optimal conditions (reaction temperature: 120 °C, pH: 7.0, potassium permanganate concentration: 0.03 mol L−1, and reaction time: 6 h), porous coatings (pore sizes ranging from 3−40 nm) formed on the surface of ACNF, which were constructed from δ-MnO2 nanosheets. The test results of continuous high concentration formaldehyde supply showed that ACNF membrane failed within 6 h under high humidity, while MnO2@ACNF The formaldehyde removal efficiency of the membrane was still close to 80%. In situ infrared test results indicate clearly that formaldehyde decomposed into CO2 and H2O on the surface of the fibers. The WNF/MnO2@ACNF/MB composite filter displays excellent filtration performance for particulate matter (PM), proving to be an exceptional method for producing functional filtration media for PM2.5 and formaldehyde removal from indoor air.

A bifunctional evaporator for sola evaporation and photocatalysis was developed. • The 3D hydrogel shows broad-spectrum solar absorption and high energy efficiency. • The Z-scheme heterojunction boosts charge separation and phenol degradation. • A detailed degradation mechanism and reaction pathway of phenol are proposed. Solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to its environmental friendliness, high efficiency, and low-carbon-emission characteristics. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often not effectively removed during the evaporation process, which can lead to secondary contamination of the collected condensate. Integrating SIE with photocatalysis for seawater desalination has therefore emerged as an effective strategy to mitigate the accumulation of VOCs in the condensate during seawater treatment. In this study, manganese (IV) oxide nanomaterials were coated with silver bromide to construct an AgBr/β-MnO 2 heterojunction that suppresses the fast charge annihilation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs and enhances photocatalytic efficiency. The resulting composite was further incorporated into a photothermal hydrogel (AgBr/β-MnO 2 -PH) matrix with excellent photothermal evaporation properties, forming a three-dimensional (3D) photocatalytic evaporation system capable of significantly improving the removal efficiency of VOCs during photothermal evaporation. Under standard solar irradiation (1 sun, 1 kW m −2 ), the porous acrylamide-based hydrogel evaporator achieved an evaporation rate of 3.47 kg m −2 h −1 and a photothermal transformation efficiency of 93.98%. In-situ irradiated XPS reveals light-induced electron enrichment on AgBr accompanied by electron depletion on β-MnO 2 , providing experimental support for a direct Z -scheme interfacial charge-transfer pathway that promotes carrier separation and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated photocatalysis. Consequently, the AgBr/β-MnO 2 -PH system exhibits a removal efficiency exceeding 99% when treating phenol-containing wastewater. Overall, this work demonstrates an effective strategy for coupling SIE with photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. The developed AgBr/β-MnO 2 -PH provides a promising approach for producing freshwater from VOC-contaminated sources and offers new insights into the application of solar energy in seawater desalination and wastewater purification.
