The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) suffers from sluggish kinetics, mainly due to the high energy barrier for water dissociation and mismatched adsorption-desorption balance of key intermediates (H* and OH*). To address this challenge, this study employs a dual-functional strategy combining Co doping and in-situ CO regulation to construct a Co-MoS 2 support with abundant sulfur vacancies (Sᵥ). These Sᵥ can efficiently anchor Ru species as highly dispersed, electron-deficient Ru 4+ state, which leads to excellent alkaline HER performance of Ru 8% @Co-MoS 2 -CO by displaying a low overpotential of 46 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 62 mV dec −1 . Combined experimental characterization and DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveals that Co-Sᵥ synergy not only optimizes Ru’s electronic structure with downshift d band center but also finely modulates the electronic properties of adjacent S site, which thereby enables precise tuning of the adsorption/desorption (ADT) behavior of OH* and H*. Meanwhile, the significantly increased electronic density around the Fermi energy (E F ) leads to enhanced efficiently electronic conductivity of Ru 8% @Co-MoS 2 -CO, as also verified by the SECM measurement, which constitutes another key factor leading to its excellent alkaline HER activity. In addition to that, it is also interestingly found that there probably also exists another route for H evolution, wherein the H* can migrate from the S site to the Ru site by crossing a low energy barrier of 0.83 eV and be evolved into H 2 by following Tafel route, jointly boosting reaction efficiency. Generally, present work provides atomic-scale insights and references for designing high-performance electrocatalysts via defect engineering-regulated metal-support interactions, which would favor other highly-efficient alkaline HER catalyst designs.

Aimed at high Pt utilization efficiency and stability, Pt/TiO 2 @Ru-C electrocatalysts have been prepared by a two-stage modified polyol process, in which ruthenium nanoparticles are dotted on TiO 2 nano-bricks to form TiO 2 @Ru in the first stage, followed by deposition of platinum nanoparticles on either the in-situ formed TiO 2 @Ru or carbon black in the second stage. The electrocatalysts have been characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction and Thermogravimetric analysis. The electrochemical surface area of the Pt/TiO 2 @Ru-C is 82.9 m 2 g −1 and remains to as high as 44.8 m 2 g −1 in an accelerated stability test. Catalytic activity towards methanol oxidation reaction of the catalyst in 0.5 M CH 3 OH + 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 at room temperature is found to be 487 A g −1 . TiO 2 nano-bricks are wedged in between the interfaces of carbon particles creating interpenetrated TiO 2 -Pt-C network, making them easily accessible to fuel cell reactions. Meanwhile, the interpenetrated TiO 2 prevent the electrocatalyst from agglomeration, leading to high Pt efficiency as well as durability.

In this work, Ru is incorporated into Ni/Co to synthesize novel Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni-Ru/Co-Ru bimetallic catalysts. Tests verify their enhanced catalytic capability and durability and also reveal how each catalyst is deactivated. SEM and EDS results indicate that nanoparticle agglomeration on Ni-based surface triggers deactivation, and TG and XPS results suggest carbon deposition is fatal to Co-based catalysts. Implementing Ru effectively enhances catalytic activity and durability. To gain insight into the promoting effect of Ru, quantum mechanical methods are utilized to investigate the shifts in activation energies (E a ) in CH x * dehydrogenation processes on (1 1 1) surfaces. For the Ni catalyst, DFT calculations indicate that adding Ru decreases E a yet does not change the determining step. In contrast, adding Ru on the Co surface changes the major intermediates from CH* to CH 2 *, which inhibits further dehydrogenation , and hence mitigates carbon deposition to preserve the catalytic activity of the surface.

A series of biomacromolecular logic gates and functional devices with cyclic voltammetric (CV) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) responses as output signals were established on the basis of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film electrodes. The MIP films were electropolymerized on the surface of Au electrodes with o-phenylenediamine (OPD) as the monomer and chloramphenicol (CP) as the template molecule. The simultaneous CV and ECL signals of Ru(bpy)32+ were significantly enhanced by the addition of natural DNA in solution at the MIP film electrodes after CP removal. The CV and ECL responses of the Ru(bpy)32+–DNA system at the MIP film electrodes were greatly influenced by CP removal and rebinding. Moreover, the addition of ferrocene methanol (FcMeOH) to the solution led to substantial quenching of the ECL signal and produced a new CV peak pair. On the basis of these results, 3-input/3-output and 3-input/5-output biomacromolecular logic gate systems were established with DNA, CP, and FcMeOH as inputs and the ECL responses at different levels or CV responses at different potentials as outputs. After an elaborate reconfiguration of inputs and outputs, the functional non-Boolean logic devices such as a 2-to-1 encoder, a 1-to-2 decoder, and a 1-to-2 demultiplexer were also constructed on the same platform.

Selective hydrogenolysis of C–O bonds in lignin is widely regarded as the most promising strategy for generating high-value chemicals and clean liquid fuels. Ni–Ru bimetallic catalyst supported on solid superacid was successfully synthesized and applied to the cleavage of C–O bonds in diphenyl ether (DPE) and alkali lignin. The catalytic hydrogenolysis of DPE over a 10%Ni–0.5%Ru–S2O82–/ZrO2 catalyst produced 88.0% cyclohexanol. Additionally, 10%Ni–0.5%Ru–S2O82–/ZrO2 catalyzed the depolymerization of alkali lignin in high yields of phenolic compounds, primarily including guaiacol and methoxyphenol. The synergistic effect between Ni and Ru promoted electron transfer from Ni to Ru. The incorporation of Ru improved the dispersion of Ni and reduced the average particle size of metallic Ni. The strong acidity of the solid superacid support provided abundant acidic sites, facilitating hydrogen atom adsorption and thereby promoting C–O bonds cleavage.

Enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability of ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts is crucial for replacing higher-cost iridium (Ir)-based materials in water electrolysis field. In this work, a series of vanadium (V)-doped RuO 2 (V x Ru 1- x O 2 ) were successfully synthesized and employed as the OER catalysts towards proton exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline water electrolyzer. The doped V can reduce the oxidation state of Ru and diminish the covalency of the Ru-O bond. In-situ FTIR and DEMS results demonstrate the leaching of lattice oxygen during is inhibited during the OER. As a result, the V 0.375 Ru 0.625 O 2 catalyst exhibited superior OER activity and long-term stability across a broad pH range. Specifically, it delivered a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of 236 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 228 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the catalyst could operate stably for a long time during the OER process, with no significant dissolution of Ru species. This work provides valuable insights into strategies for enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity and stability of RuO 2 through modification with the V dopants, offering a promising pathway for developing cost-effective and high-performance OER catalysts for water electrolysis.

Selective aerobic oxidation of long-chain primary aliphatic alcohols to the corresponding carboxylic acids remains a fundamental yet industrially challenging transformation, particularly under base-free conditions. Herein, we report a systematic investigation of Ru nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (Ru/NC) for the oxidation of isononanol to isononanoic acid using molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant. By tailoring the thermal treatment atmosphere and temperature, the particle size and surface oxidation state of Ru were precisely regulated. Among the catalysts examined, Ru/NC reduced in H 2 at 523 K exhibited optimal performance, affording 98% conversion and 88% selectivity to isononanoic acid at 393 K and 0.8 MPa O 2 after 24 h without any added base. Structure–activity correlation reveals a volcano-type dependence of activity on Ru particle size with an optimum around 1.3 nm, and a strong positive correlation between surface Ru° fraction and catalytic performance. The N-doped carbon support not only stabilizes highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles but also modulates their electronic structure via metal–support interactions. Catalyst deactivation is primarily attributed to Ru leaching and nanoparticle sintering. This study provides mechanistic insight into Ru-catalyzed oxidation of high-carbon aliphatic alcohols and highlights the critical role of controlled reduction in achieving efficient, base-free oxidation systems. Graphical The power of synergy : Ru nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon enable efficient base-free aerobic oxidation of isononanol to isononanoic acid. Precise control over thermal treatment regulates Ru particle size and surface oxidation state, establishing clear structure–activity relationships. An optimal Ru 0 fraction and ∼1.3 nm particles deliver 98% conversion with 88% acid selectivity. The N-doped support modulates electronic properties through metal–support interactions, offering a sustainable route for fatty acid production.

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia is strongly dependent on the availability of active hydrogen (*H). Either insufficient *H supply or excessive *H accumulation at the catalyst surface can compromise ammonia production and Faradaic efficiency. To address this challenge, a RuNP/Cu NC catalyst was developed by constructing N-bridged Ru nanoparticles on a carbon‑nitrogen support anchored by single-atom Cu. In this architecture, Ru nanoparticles generate *H and establish a hydrogen-transfer pathway across the Ru nanoparticles/Cu single atoms interface, thereby promoting nitrate enrichment and subsequent hydrogenation. The RuNP/Cu NC catalyst achieved an NH 3 yield rate of 7.92 mg h −1 cm −2 with a Faradaic efficiency of 97.22%, together with an energy efficiency of 34.31%, far surpassing those of RuNP/NC (9.75%) and Cu NC (13.64%). Operando DRT analysis revealed accelerated interfacial charge-transfer kinetics on RuNP/Cu NC, facilitating hydrogen spillover from Ru sites to adsorbed NO 3 − species on neighboring Cu sites. In situ FTIR spectroscopy captured the key intermediate *NH 2 OH. Theory calculations further showed that the hydrogenation superhighway established at the strong metal-support (MSI) interactions interface lowers the hydrogenation energy barrier of NH 2 OH. This work establishes a hydrogen-regulated reaction pathway and demonstrates the advantages of MSI for efficient ammonia electrosynthesis. The immobilization of Ru nanoparticles on single-atom Cu NC generates interconnected Ru N and Ru Ru interfacial domains that function as rapid *H transfer superhighways across the catalyst surface. Using photodynamic therapy (PDT) to trigger nonconventional cell death pathways has provided a new scheme for highly efficient and non-side effects to drug-resistant cancer therapies. Nonetheless, the unclear targets of available photosensitizers leave the manner of PDT-induced tumor cell death relatively unpredictable. Herein, we developed a novel Ru(II)-based photosensitizer, Ru-Poma. Possessing the E3 ubiquitin ligase CRBN-targeting moiety and high singlet oxygen yield of 0.96, Ru-Poma was demonstrated to specifically photodegrade endogenous CRBN, increase lipid peroxide, downregulate GPX4 and GAPDH expression, and consequently induce ferroptosis in cisplatin-resistant cancerous cells. Furthermore, with the deep penetration of two-photon excitation, Ru-Poma achieved drug-resistant circumvention in a 3D tumor cell model. Thus, we describe the first sample of the CRBN-targeting Ru(II) complex active in PDT.

Non-Pt or low-Pt catalysts capable for stable generation of hydrogen via water electrolysis at an industrial level of current density are highly demanded. Construction of strong metal-support connection is beneficial to improve the performance stability of electrocatalysts. Here we employed highly defective N-doped carbon nanotubes (d-N-CNT) as the support to achieve uniform and firm anchoring of Ru clusters (~ 1.9 nm) via a thermal-shock strategy. The as-prepared Ru/d-N-CNT catalyst shows excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media and requires an overpotential (η) of 12 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and 116 mV at 200 mA·cm −2 with a Ru loading of 0.025 mg·cm −2 . Impressively, Ru/d-N-CNT presents robust stability for HER at both low current density (stable for at least 1000 h at 10 mA·cm −2 ) and the industrial level of current density (stable for at least 100 h at 1000 mA·cm −2 ), remarkably outperforming commercial Pt/C and Ru/C. The highly defective nature of the N-CNT support endowed the as-prepared Ru/d-N-CNT catalyst with strong metal–support adhesion that efficiently suppressed agglomeration as well as obscission of Ru clusters. Meanwhile, the rich defects increased the surface energy of the N-CNT support and resulted in improved hydrophilicity as evidenced by the liquid contact angle measurement and the bubble evolution process, which also played an important role in stabilizing the HER performance especially at large current density.

Multiple signal strategies remarkably improve the accuracy and efficiency of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassays, but the lack of potential-resolved luminophore pairs and chemical cross talk hinders their development. In this study, we synthesized a series of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/reduced graphene oxide (Au/rGO) composites as adjustable oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction catalysts to promote and modulate tris(2,2′-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)32+)’s multisignal luminescence. With the increase in the diameter of AuNPs (3 to 30 nm), their ability to promote Ru(bpy)32+’s anodic ECL was first impaired and then strengthened, and cathodic ECL was first enhanced and then weakened. Au/rGOs with medium-small and medium-large AuNP diameters remarkably increased Ru(bpy)32+’s cathodic and anodic luminescence, respectively. Notably, the stimulation effects of Au/rGOs were superior to those of most existing Ru(bpy)32+ co-reactants. Moreover, we proposed a novel ratiometric immunosensor construction strategy using Ru(bpy)32+’s luminescence promoter rather than luminophores as tags of antibodies to achieve signal resolution. This method avoids signal cross talk between luminophores and their respective co-reactants, which achieved a good linear range of 10−7 to 10−1 ng/ml and a limit of detection of 0.33 fg/ml for detecting carcinoembryonic antigen. This study addresses the previous scarcity of the macromolecular co-reactants of Ru(bpy)32+, broadening its application in biomaterial detection. Furthermore, the systematic clarification of the detailed mechanisms for converting the potential-resolved luminescence of Ru(bpy)32+ could facilitate an in-depth understanding of the ECL process and should inspire new designs of Ru(bpy)32+ luminescence enhancers or applications of Au/rGOs to other luminophores. This work removes some impediments to the development of multisignal ECL biodetection systems and provides vitality into their widespread applications.

At near ambient temperature, Ru nanoparticles entrapped in ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) CMK-3 show superior efficiency in the green reduction process of nitrobenzene and its derivatives with hydrazine monohydrate as a hydrogen donor using water as solvent. The Ru/CMK-3 catalyst exhibited much higher activity than a commercial Ru/C catalyst purchased from Alfa Aesar toward the reduction of nitrobenzene with hydrazine monohydrate under the same conditions. The interaction of Ru nanoparticles with CMK-3 and the mesoporous structure of CMK-3 OMCs might play important roles in determining the catalytic performance of the Ru/CMK-3 catalyst. In addition, the catalytic performance of the Ru/CMK-3 catalyst for the reduction of nitrobenzene was also compared using different hydrogen sources. Hydrazine monohydrate was found to be suitable as a hydrogen donor for the reduction of nitrobenzene and its derivatives. Compared with those obtained in the reduction of nitrobenzenes using 4.0 MPa hydrogen, the catalytic activity of the Ru/CMK-3 catalyst obtained using hydrazine monohydrate as hydrogen donor was much higher in most cases.
