Superficial S atom optimized active sites in NiFe layered double hydroxides for electrocatalytic urea oxidation

Zhe Deng,Xiandi Ma,Ning Wang,Menggai Jiao,Hao Wan,Li-Li Zhang,Wei Ma,Zhen Zhou

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a promising strategy for purifying urea-laden wastewater and promoting energy-efficient hydrogen production. However, the strong binding of the hydroxyl group to Fe sites in the NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) impedes the generation of active Ni 3+ -O, thus raising the onset potential of UOR. Moreover, identifying and tracking the active sites in NiFe-LDH at the molecular level remains a considerable challenge during the UOR process. Herein, we modified NiFe-LDH by incorporating the low-electronegativity S element to create S-NiFe-LDH, thereby optimizing the electron structure and facilitating the transfer of active sites from Ni 2+ and Fe 3+ in the original NiFe-LDH to high-valence Ni intermediates in S-NiFe-LDH at a low applied potential. Moreover, the incorporation of S into NiFe-LDH significantly reduces the thermodynamic barrier of the Ni active sites, advancing the intrinsic activity and kinetic process of the active sites for the decomposition of urea by facilitating the Ni 3+ -O formation because of the facile dehydrogenation steps at the Ni sites. As a result, the S-NiFe-LDH achieved excellent electrochemical UOR activity, with a low potential of 1.36 V and long-term durability at 100 mA cm −2 , demonstrating promising prospects for practical application. Overall, this work unscrambles the immediate active sites during electrocatalysis and paves a new avenue for the electronic engineering of NiFe-based catalysts in the UOR process.

Bicentric Poly(ionic Liquid)s Adsorbent for Gold, Palladium, and Platinum Recovery in Acidic Medium

Jun Li,Ronghao Liu,Hao Tian,Yanzhao Yang

Precious metal recovery from secondary resources with high efficiency and minimal environmental impact remains a critical challenge in separation technology. In this study, a novel ionic liquid N6-tetramethyl-N1-(4-vinylbenzyl)hexane-1,6-diammonium chloride (TVBHDCCl 2 ) was synthesized and subsequently polymerized into bicentric poly(ionic liquid)s, designated as P(TVBHDCCl 2 )s. The P(TVBHDCCl 2 )s demonstrated exceptional adsorption capacities for gold (637 mg/g), palladium (299 mg/g) and platinum (542 mg/g) with fast adsorption kinetics to reach equilibrium within 2–4 min and appreciable stability in acidic medium (pH = 1). Combined experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that the adsorption process is governed by a synergistic mechanism involving electrostatic interactions and redox reactions, with the primary adsorption site located in the region between the double cationic center in P(TVBHDCCl 2 )s. In summary, this work introduces a highly efficient, selective, and sustainable polymeric adsorbent for simultaneously recovering precious metals from secondary resources, presenting a viable strategy for resource recycling and green separation technology. Graphical A green and efficient strategy is reported for the selective adsorption of Au(III) from wastewater containing As 3+ , Ag + , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Pd 2+ , and Pt 4+ . By using poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) as adsorbents, gold is preferentially captured. Following adsorption, efficient stripping and washing enable complete regeneration of the PILs. This closed-loop cycle offers a sustainable pathway for precious metal reclamation.

[hk1]-oriented Ag:Sb₂S₃ thin films via Ag doping for high efficiency indoor solar cells

Chao Ying,Xinyue Zhu,Hanxiao Li,Yi Xie,Yang Wang,Dong Tian,Shiliu Yang,Daofu Liu,Shiyue Zhu,Guannan Xiao

Antimony trisulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ) has emerged as a promising absorber material for indoor photovoltaic applications owing to its ideal bandgap (∼1.73 eV) and high absorption coefficient in the visible spectrum. However, the carrier transport efficiency of Sb 2 S 3 thin films is strongly constrained by their preferential crystallographic orientation, with the [hk1]-oriented films exhibiting approximately 100 times higher resistivity than their [hk0]-oriented counterparts. Herein, we report a facile chemical bath deposition (CBD) strategy to achieve the [hk1]-oriented Ag-doped Sb 2 S 3 thin films by incorporating trace amounts of Ag + ions into the growth solution. The effects of Ag + concentration on the crystal orientation, bandgap, chemical composition, and defect density of the resulting Ag:Sb 2 S 3 thin films, as well as the photovoltaic performance of the corresponding solar cells, were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the Ag:Sb 2 S 3 thin film with an optimal Ag doping concentration of 2% exhibits superior [hk1]-orientation, significantly reduced defect density, and enhanced carrier transport properties, while maintaining an ideal bandgap of ∼1.77 eV. As a result, the Ag:Sb₂S₃ solar cell achieves a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 7.01% under AM 1.5 G illumination and up to 17.22% under warm white LED illumination (2762 K, 1000 lx), representing a notable achievement for Sb 2 S 3 -based indoor solar cells.

Elegant design and construction of S-scheme ZnWO4/Zn3In2S6 heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution

Xuyu Shen,Jie Wei,Long Yang,Youxin Yuanfeng,Zehao Sun,Shuyou Li,Bing Chen,Guogang Chen

Novel S-scheme ZnWO 4 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 heterojunction photocatalysts were designed and constructed herein by a facile two-step hydrothermal method to enhance photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution. The experimental results and analysis demonstrated that the heterojunction structure effectively promotes separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, suppresses charge carrier recombination and retains charge carriers with high redox capacity participating in the catalytic reaction, thereby significantly improving the photocatalytic activity. For instance, 0.2ZnWO 4 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (0.2ZW/ZIS) heterojunction photocatalyst achieved the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 42.66 mmol g −1  h −1 under visible-light irradiation, which is approximately 7.28 times that of pure Zn 3 In 2 S 6 . Both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy analysis confirmed that strong interfacial interactions exist between ZnWO 4 and Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , following an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism rather than the conventional Type-II heterojunction pathway. It is believed that this study provides new insights for developing efficient, stable, and noble-metal-free S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution.

Co-Pi-assisted S-scheme photoelectrochemical platform for enhanced charge separation toward ultrasensitive dimethoate detection

Meng Yuan,Lingling Huang,Qi Zhang,Mingquan Huang,Baocai Xu,Liangyun Yu

Novel S-scheme heterojunction boosts light absorption/charge separation. • In-situ Co-Pi co-catalyst reduced electron-hole recombination. • Polypyrrole-MIP membrane ensures DIM recognition with maintained conductivity. • The sensor achieves ultra-sensitivity: LOD 0.83 fmol/L, 1.0 fmol/L-100 pmol/L range. • The new sensors demonstrated reliable DIM detection in real samples. An S-scheme TpPzda-COF@ZnIn 2 S 4 @Co-Pi core–shell hybrid was fabricated via in situ growth of a ZnIn₂S₄ nanoflower shell on a β-ketoenamine-linked TpPzda-COF core, followed by photodeposition of a cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) cocatalyst. The resulting hierarchical architecture facilitated efficient interfacial charge transfer and synergistic effects, leading to enhanced light absorption, charge separation, and catalytic activity. Based on this photoactive material, a molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (MIP-PEC) sensor was constructed through electropolymerization using pyrrole as the functional monomer and dimethoate (DIM) as the template. The imprinted cavities enabled selective recognition of DIM, regulating interfacial electron transfer and producing distinct photocurrent responses. Benefiting from the π-conjugated structure of TpPzda-COF, the visible-light activity of ZnIn 2 S 4 , and the hole-extraction capability of Co-Pi, the proposed sensor exhibited high sensitivity, good stability, and satisfactory reproducibility. An ultralow detection limit of 0.83 fmol·L −1 was achieved over a wide linear range of 1.0 fmol·L −1 to 100 pmol·L −1 . Furthermore, successful determination of DIM in real fruit and vegetable samples demonstrated the applicability of the sensor for food safety and environmental monitoring. Construction of a P/S dual-atom coordinated Co heterogeneous mononuclear complex catalyst for hydroformylation

Sen Feng,Cunyao Li,Benhan Fan,Guangjun Ji,Hong Wei,Xinyuan Liu,Yang Zhao,Miao Jiang,Li Yan,Qiang Zhou,Yunjie Ding

To replace scarce Rh resources and enhance the recyclability of the metal, we report a novel heterogeneous cobalt mononuclear complex catalyst, which possesses phosphorus-rich polymer backbone and P/S dual-atom coordination sites. This catalyst exhibited a much higher hydroformylation performance of 2,5-DHF compared to the Co-P homogeneous analogue, increasing conversion by 70% and shifting selectivity toward high-value-added 3-Formyl-THF by 15%. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the heterogeneous mononuclear complex Co 1 /POPs-PPh 3 -5P&2S catalyst displayed comparable performance of precious Rh-based catalysts, achieving a 96.8% conversion of 2,5-DHF and an 85.6% selectivity of 3-Formyl-THF for at least 5 runs. Comprehensive characterizations (extended X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in-situ Fourier transformed infrared, etc .) demonstrated that P/S dual-site coordination regulated the electronic structure of Co active centers. Notably, the incorporation of sulfur increased the difference in adsorption energy barriers between the substrate and its isomerized substrate, thereby promoting the massive generation of 3-Formyl-THF. Besides, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations successfully evidenced the complete structure of the active center and established a coherent reaction mechanism. This study successfully developed a heterogeneous catalyst system based on a mononuclear cobalt complex, achieving a new strategy for non-noble metal catalysis and providing new insights into energy conservation and efficient resource utilization.

Molecular bridged s-scheme heterojunction of Zn-TCPP(Co)/Ti3C2 for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Wang Yanrong,Chen Qiuling

The strategic integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with MXenes presents a promising avenue to overcome charge separation bottlenecks in photocatalysis. This study constructs a hierarchical S-scheme heterojunction by in-situ growing ultrafine Zinc–Tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Cobalt-incorporated) Zn-TCPP(Co) MOF nanoparticles (15 nm) on two-dimensional functionalized MXene nanosheets. This unique “particle-on-lamella” architecture is engineered with molecular bridges, establishing a chemically bonded interface via C–Ti–O and N–Ti bonds that facilitate rapid charge transfer. The optimized heterostructure exhibits a narrow bandgap of 1.95 eV, a significantly prolonged charge carrier lifetime of 35.5 ns, and a high photocurrent density of 1.7 µA cm − 2 . By leveraging synergistic S-scheme charge separation, MXene’s metallic conductivity, and molecular single-atom Co sites, the composite achieves an exceptional hydrogen evolution rate of 24.3 mmol g − 1 h − 1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 10.2% at 420 nm—representing a sixfold enhancement over pristine Zn-TCPP(Co). This performance surpasses many recently reported MOF- and MXene-based photocatalysts. Combined density functional theory calculations and experimental analyses confirm the critical role of the internal electric field in driving the S-scheme mechanism, which effectively preserves strong redox potentials. This work provides a definitive blueprint for high-performance photocatalytic systems through molecular-level interfacial engineering.

Targeting PFKL with S-Benzylisothiourea Imidazolium Salt Derivatives to Suppress Glycolysis and Treat Breast Cancer

Wang Mengqi,Li Xinge,Bai Yan,Luo Wenhan,Gao Yashi,Xie Weilin,Su Chenhe,Chang Junbiao,Zhu Bo

Metabolic reprogramming relying on abnormal glycolysis fuels tumor growth, rendering the rate-limiting glycolytic enzyme PFKL a potential anticancer target; yet no PFKL inhibitor has entered clinical trials. Herein, we synthesized a series of S-benzylisothiourea imidazolium salt derivatives and identified compound 10w , which potently inhibited breast cancer cell proliferation, suppressed glycolysis, and induced apoptosis. Drug Affinity Responsive Target Stability (DARTS) assays revealed PFKL as the direct cellular target of 10w . Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA), and molecular docking studies confirmed the binding of 10w to PFKL. Enzymatic activity assays further demonstrated that 10w inhibited PFKL activity. Notably, 10w exerted no obvious effects on glycolysis or glycolytic capacity in PFKL-knockdown breast cancer cells. In vivo assays showed that 10w exerted significant antitumor efficacy and enhanced the efficacy of anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy. In conclusion, compound 10w targets PFKL as a promising therapeutic agent for breast cancer.

Catalytic ozonation with N, S co-doped sludge biochar for decontamination: Performance and mechanistic insights

Xinyi Tao,Weiwei Chen,Xuehong Fan,Rui Hu,Xuejian Wang,Shiquan Sun,Yu-Hong Cui,Zheng-Qian Liu

Waste-derived biochar catalysts are widely used in catalytic ozonation. However, biochar is often constrained by insufficient surface active sites and low interfacial electron transfer efficiency. In this work, nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped sediment-derived biochar (C-N 1 S 2 -600) was prepared by one-step pyrolysis using a mixed compost of black-odorous sediment, reed straw, and food waste as precursors, with melamine and thiourea using as the N and S sources, respectively. The optimized C-N 1 S 2 -600 has a well-developed mesoporous structure, abundant structural defects, and numerous reactive sites originating from N/S–C coordination. Ozonation with C-N 1 S 2 -600 achieved 62.8% Deethylatrazine degradation, which was significantly higher than that of ozonation alone (13.9%) and ozonation with pristine biochar (33.1%). C-N 1 S 2 -600 also exhibited excellent reusability over five consecutive cycles and maintained high performance in secondary effluent. Reactive species identification confirmed that C-N 1 S 2 -600 facilitated the conversion of O 3 into • OH. Theoretical calculations further revealed that N, S co-doping induced a more non-uniform surface charge distribution and narrowed the orbital energy gap, providing electronic-level insights into enhanced O 3 adsorption, interfacial electron transfer, and reactive oxygen species generation. C-N 1 S 2 -600 exhibited good operational stability and tolerance to matrix interference under the tested conditions. This study provides a feasible strategy for converting solid-waste-derived biochar into efficient carbonaceous catalysts for advanced wastewater treatment, and offers a promising strategy for micropollutant abatement and wastewater purification by catalytic ozonation with high-performance biochar catalyst.

Interfacial engineering of COF-TpBpy/CdSe S-scheme heterojunction for robust H₂O₂ photocatalytic production

Mohan Zhang,Yu Zhang,Jiayi Meng,Jiajie Wang,Jiaqi Du,Hongwei Chen,Yifan Liao,Yuchen Wei,Quanmei Zhou,Yuying Hu,Yakun Song,Hongyan Zhao,Wei-Lin Dai

Organic/inorganic CdSe/TpBpy-COF S-scheme heterojunction for H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. • Molecularly intimate interface by in-situ solvothermal growth for rapid electron transfer. • Strong internal electric field and band bending drive the S-scheme charge transfer pathway. • An exceptional H 2 O 2 yield of 4349 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 in pure water without sacrificial agents. • DFT reveals thermodynamically spontaneous "downhill" 2e - oxygen reduction pathway. Photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production via oxygen reduction represents a sustainable pathway for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, constructing sacrificial-agent-free heterojunctions that simultaneously maximize charge separation and preserve redox ability remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a molecular-level interfacial engineering strategy to anchor COF-TpBpy onto CdSe nanorods via in-situ solvothermal growth, fabricating a strongly coupled organic–inorganic S-scheme heterojunction. Benefiting from the intimate interfacial contact, the optimized 10CdSe/TpBpy composite achieves a remarkable H 2 O 2 yield of 4349 μmol·g⁻¹·h⁻¹ in pure water without any sacrificial agents, alongside an impressive apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 11.1% at 450 nm. Mechanistic investigations, combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( in-situ XPS), visually confirm a robust built-in internal electric field (IEF) driven by the work function difference. Furthermore, femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy reveals an ultrafast picosecond-scale interfacial charge transfer behavior, providing direct kinetic evidence for the S-scheme mechanism. This unique charge transfer pathway effectively preserves the strong reducing electrons in the CdSe conduction band to boost the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. This work offers a viable paradigm for designing robust hybrid S-scheme architectures for efficient photocatalysis. Download: Download high-res image (167KB) Download: Download full-size image

Preparation of CoS2/Nd2O3 composites and S-CNTs and their electrochemical performance in asymmetric supercapacitors

Zhang Wei,Lan Yunfei,Zheng Xueliang,Zhang Yu,Shen Wei

Short-duration and repetitive power fluctuations associated with train acceleration, braking, and regenerative-energy recovery require energy-storage devices with rapid response, high-rate capability, and stable cycling. Here, a CoS 2 /Nd 2 O 3 composite positive electrode prepared at a confirmed Co/Nd molar feed ratio of 2:1 and a sulfur-treated carbon-nanotube (S-CNT) negative electrode were combined in an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor. The composite exhibited a predominantly mesoporous architecture with a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 213.21 m 2  g −1 , while the S-CNTs retained a continuous one-dimensional conductive network and sulfur-related surface species. The CoS 2 /Nd 2 O 3 electrode delivered 1961 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and retained 1401 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 , with 87.6% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The S-CNT electrode delivered 431 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , 28.7% above untreated CNTs under the same conditions, and retained 81.0% at 20 A g −1 . The two-electrode device retained 73.3% of its 1 A g −1 capacitance at 15 A g −1 and approximately 95.0% after 10,000 cycles. A retrospective first-order charge-balance analysis indicates that further optimization of the electrode mass ratio would be beneficial. These results support the tested material pair as a laboratory-scale platform for short-duration power buffering, while composition optimization, complete-device impedance characterization, and application-specific pulse validation would further strengthen its assessment for rail-transit applications.

Engineering of PtZn@S-1 Using an Alkali–Acid Pair Strategy: Applied for Ethane Dehydrogenation

Linlong Zhang,Jingqing Tian,Ruiqiang Liu,Bing Ma,Chen Zhao

Developing synthetic strategies for high-quality metal-zeolite composites is critical for achieving advanced catalytic performances. One major challenge lies in addressing the rate mismatch between rapid metal deposition and slow zeolite crystallization, which leads to the segregation of large metal particles. Herein, we propose a universal strategy via quaternary ammonium alkali–metallic acid (QAMA) pairs for fabricating highly dispersed metal@zeolite materials with nearly 100% metal (Ru, Ir, Pd, Pt, and Zn) utilization. Using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as both a structural-directing agent and basic medium, the interaction of TPA+ with acidic metal precursors forms the “QAMA” pairs, which inhibit the precipitation of metal precursors and guide their dispersion into the 10-membered ring channels of MFI topology. Furthermore, the appropriate Si–OH groups on the silicalite-1 (S-1) seeds surface anchor the “QAMA” pairs and thus assist in the subnanometer PtZn particle dispersion. A series of PtZn@S-1 catalysts exhibited outstanding catalytic activity (14.1 molC2H4·gPt–1·h–1 at 24 h–1 weight hourly space velocity (WHSV)) and stability (Kd = 0.0004 h–1) in ethane dehydrogenation (EDH), particularly at relatively low temperature (550 °C) with pure ethane feed.
