Fiber reinforced porous (La1/5Nd1/5Sm1/5Gd1/5Yb1/5)2Zr2O7 ceramics with enhanced compressive strength

De-Bao Liu,Bao-Lu Shi,Yi-Guang Wang,Bao-Sheng Xu

In this work, we have prepared a novel yttria-stabilized zirconia fiber (YSZ f )-reinforced (La 1/5 Nd 1/5 Sm 1/5 Gd 1/5 Yb 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 porous ceramics (YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs) through a foam-gelcasting-freeze drying process. The microstructure, phase composition, density, porosity, thermal conductivity, and compressive strength of the as-prepared YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs were systematically investigated. In addition, the high-temperature thermal cycle stability and thermally insulating property of the samples were also tested. The results indicated that the as-synthesized YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs (with 25 wt% YSZ fibers) exhibited high porosity, high compressive strength, low thermal conductivity as well as low thermal cycling shrinkage. This work demonstrated that the added YSZ fiber can remarkably improve the strength of (5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs with the high porosity, and as-developed YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs would be an excellent candidate for high-temperature thermal insulator materials.

Variation of Water Quality in Ningxia Section of the Yellow River in Recent 5 Years

Yan Jin,Xinyuan Wang,Ya-Ping Dong

The Yellow River is very important for human health and social development in China to require good water quality. This study selected the Ningxia section of the Yellow River as the study area to investigate the water quality variation in 2016–2020. A total of 9 water quality parameters were monitored, and 8 parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total phosphate, fluoride, ammonia-nitrogen, and permanganate index were in the range of Class II standard requirement. Dissolved oxygen concentrations ranged from 7.5 to 9.4 mg/L. However, total nitrogen concentrations in 2018–2020 ranged from 1.87 to 2.8 mg/L to cause the pollution. Both the Nemerow index method and the contamination degree method showed that total nitrogen with high concentration exerted the water pollution. Principal component analysis also proved this. Stricter environmental management strategies for controlling total nitrogen should be taken in the future. The findings provided some useful information for water pollution of the Ningxia section of the Yellow River.

Low-Temperature Catalytic Pyrolysis of Cellulose to Directional Products 5-Methylfurfural by Magnetic Ionic Liquid

Xie Ruosong,He Weiwei,Qu Guangfei,Wu HuanHuan,Li Ziying,Li Junyan,Li Weijie

The application of biomass pyrolysis was still limited owing to the high pyrolysis temperature and the complicacy of pyrolysis products. In this work, a homogeneous low-temperature cellulose catalytic pyrolysis system is proposed to directional products 5-methylfurfural. The low-temperature catalytic activity and products distribution of cellulose pyrolysis in [bmim][FeCl 4 ] (Fe-IL) and [bmim] 2 CoCl 4 (Co-IL) at temperature gradients from 150 to 300 °C were studied. As the results, both Fe-IL and Co-IL can catalyze the pyrolysis of cellulose, especially for Fe-IL, which effectively reduced the pyrolysis temperature of cellulose to 200 °C. Nano-scale and micron-scale particles were produced by the catalysis of Fe-IL and Co-IL, respectively. Fe-IL have a high selectivity for the production 5-methylfurfural (5-MF) and furfural (FF), which were 71.12% and 19.14% respectively at the pyrolysis temperature of 200 °C. Furthermore, the mechanism of low-temperature catalytic pyrolysis and the directional evolution mechanism of 5-MF and FF were suggested. Graphical abstract

Highly porous (La1/5Nd1/5Sm1/5Gd1/5Yb1/5)2Zr2O7 ceramics with ultra-low thermal conductivity

Debao Liu,Zhiliang Zhou,Yiguang Wang,Baosheng Xu

The high-entropy rare earth zirconate (La 1/5 Nd 1/5 Sm 1/5 Gd 1/5 Yb 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 porous ceramics ((5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs) were prepared using a foam-gel casting-freeze drying method combined with segmented calcination process. The results of SEM, TEM , and XRD analyses of the (5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs indicated the formation of a defective fluorite crystal structure, with the rare earth elements homogeneously distributed. Meanwhile, the as-prepared (5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs exhibited high porosity, low bulk density, low thermal conductivity , and relatively high compressive strength . Moreover, the high-temperature thermal conductivity of the samples was evaluated, and the results showed that the (5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs maintain a thermal conductivity of 0.150 ± 0.002 W m −1  K −1 even at 1000 °C. The strategy used in this paper can be extended to the synthesis of other high-entropy porous ceramics with high porosity and low thermal conductivity, which is suitable for applications as thermal insulation materials.

Oral Administration of 5-Hydroxytryptophan Restores Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis in a Mouse Model of Depression

Wu Lijuan,Ran Lisha,Wu Yazeng,Liang Manyu,Zeng Jing,Ke Famin,Wang Fang,Yang Jian,Lao Xiaoqing,Liu Li,Wang Qin,Gao Xiaowei

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) has positive clinical effects on various neuropsychiatric and metabiotic disorders, especially depression. Although it increases serotonin levels in the brain and gastrointestinal tract, its pharmacology remains largely unknown. Our goal was to determine the effects of 5-HTP on the mouse gut microbiome, which has a close relationship with depression through the “microbiota-gut-brain axis.” We confirmed that depressive disorder restructures the gut microbial community, and 5-HTP efficiently improves depressive symptoms in mice. Oral administration of 5-HTP significantly restored gut microbiota dysbiosis in mice with depression-like behaviors. The diversity and richness of gut microbial communities and relative abundance of specific microbial taxa at both phylum and genus levels were partially recovered. 5-HTP exhibited some positive effects on restoring the alterations in the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids and brain-derived neurotrophic factors caused by depression in mice. Our results may provide new insights into the pharmacology of 5-HTP in treating depression and other disorders.

Performance and selectivity of amphiphilic pillar[5]arene as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography

Tao Sun,Qiuchen Huang,Wei Zhang,Ruonan Chen,Wei Li,Haipeng Chen,Shaoqiang Hu,Zhiqiang Cai

Pillar[ n ]arenes possess highly symmetrical and rigid pillar-shaped architecture with π -electron rich cavity that afford their reliable host-guest recognition interactions towards matched guests. In this work, a novel amphiphilic pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-2NH 2 ) was designed, synthesized and employed as the stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. To date, they have not been reported in the field of chromatography. The P5A-C10-2NH 2 capillary column (10 m × 0.25 mm i.d.) was prepared by static coating method. Its capillary column exhibited moderate polarity and column efficiency of 2265 plates/m determined by naphthalene at 120 °C. As evidenced, the P5A-C10-2NH 2 column achieved advantageous separation performance for a mixture of 24 analytes of diverse types and exhibited different chromatographic selectivity from two pillar[5]arene derivatives columns and commercial HP-35 column with 35%-phenyl-methylpolysiloxane. Moreover, the P5A-C10-2NH 2 column baseline resolved more than a dozen positional and cis - trans isomers. Furthermore, the separation mechanism of P5A-C10-2NH 2 column was discussed by quantum chemical calculations. In addition, the P5A-C10-2NH 2 column had high thermal stability and excellent separation repeatability 0.01–0.04% for run-to-run, 0.03–0.17% for day-to-day and 3.2–3.9% for column-to-column. The special amphiphilic structure and high resolution for various analytes reveal the good potential of pillararenes as a new class of stationary phases for chromatographic analyses. Moreover, the TPG column achieved improved thermal stability over the GIL column and excellent repeatability.

Design, Synthesis, and Apoptosis-Promoting Effect Evaluation of Rhopaladins’ Analog 4-Arylidene-5-Oxopyrrolidine Derivatives

Zhu Jun,Kong Ling-Qi,Chen Qin-Hua,Li Bin,Wu Lun,Ran Feng-Ying,Ke Li-Na,Zeng Xiao-Hua,Wang Hong-Mei

Marine alkaloids have novel structures and antitumor activities. Therefore, we synthesized rhopaladins’ analogs from marine alkaloids rhopaladins A-D and modified their structures to synthesize 4-benzylidene-5-pyrrolidone derivatives. Among the compounds, (2E, 4E)-4-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-2-(4-chlorostyryl)-N-cyclohexyl-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxamide (RPDPRH) has high efficiency and less hepatotoxicity, with IC50 values of 4.66, 6.42, 17.66, 15.2, 12.36, 22.4, and 243.2 μM in vitro anti-proliferative activity testing against cervical cancer C-33A, CaSki, SiHa, and HeLa cells, human hepatocarcinoma HepG2 and 7402 cells, and human normal liver LO2 cells, respectively. In particular, RPDPRH has similar activity to cisplatin on human hepatocarcinoma cells, and cisplatin served as a positive control in our study. Next, the apoptosis of HepG2 and 7402 cells induced by RPDPRH at different concentrations was detected by Annexin V/PI flow cytometry. Moreover, the expression of apoptotic proteins was detected by Western blot analysis. Finally, the results showed that RPDPRH could induce apoptosis of hepatocarcinoma cells by regulating Bax and Bcl-2 expressions. In summary, our results indicate that RPDPRH has the potential to serve as an antitumor agent and plays a significant role in future studies.

Hydroxyapatite Supported Manganese Oxide as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of 2, 5-Diformylfuran

Chen Hong,Li Yingying,Yu Linhao,Wang Sen,Ma Xueli,Wang Can,Li Yongdan

A series of hydroxyapatite (HAP) supports with different Ca/P ratios were synthesized to prepare the MnO x /HAP catalysts. A MnO x /HAP catalyst showed highly efficient conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2, 5-diformylfuran (DFF) in toluene solvent under no-alkali condition. 86.4% conversion of HMF with 90.9% selectivity of DFF at 120 °C for 12 h under 1.0 MPa O 2 over the MnO x /HAP-10.0-400 were obtained. The redox of Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ improved the oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF by the lattice oxygen, and the lattice oxygen was replenished by adsorbing O 2 molecules. The reusability tests were found the catalyst could be reused up to four cycles without notable loss of catalytic activity. The MnO x /HAP-10.0-400 was a stable and reusable material for further industrial exploration of DFF in an environmentally friendly way. Graphical Abstract

Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Coupled with 4-Nitrophenol Hydrogenation in a Water System

Xuliang Pang,Hongye Bai,Huaiquan Zhao,Weiqiang Fan,Weidong Shi

Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is of great significance for sustainable chemical production. The key challenge is to establish an electrocatalytic system with a wide potential window, which can selectively oxidize HMF to FDCA without causing water oxidation. In this study, Cu foam decorated with Cu(OH)2 (CF-Cu(OH)2) was successfully fabricated as an efficient catalyst, and CuOOH active species generated by electrochemistry were demonstrated as the main catalytic sites for HMF oxidation. As a result, the current density of CF-Cu(OH)2 reached up to 198.2 mA/cm2 (100 mM HMF, 1.0 M KOH, 0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl), and a high faradic efficiency close to 100% for FDCA production (yield: 98.7%) was realized. Moreover, we reveal the mechanism for the electro-oxidation of HMF to FDCA and further provide an insight into the oxidation pathway for HMF. A paired electrochemical system exhibits superior catalytic performance of synergetic reactions (HMF oxidation and 4-NP reduction). Therefore, this work proposes a strategy to simultaneously produce two types of value-added chemicals at both electrodes, which can be applied in other electrocatalytic systems for the green synthesis of organic compounds.

Au-ZSM-5 catalyses the selective oxidation of CH4 to CH3OH and CH3COOH using O2

Qi Guodong,Davies Thomas E.,Nasrallah Ali,Sainna Mala A.,Howe Alexander G. R.,Lewis Richard J.,Quesne Matthew,Catlow C. Richard A.,Willock David J.,He Qian,Bethell Donald,Howard Mark J.,Murrer Barry A.,Harrison Brian,Kiely Christopher J.,Zhao Xingling,Deng Feng,Xu Jun,Hutchings Graham J.

The oxidation of methane, the main component of natural gas, to selectively form oxygenated chemical feedstocks using molecular oxygen has been a long-standing grand challenge in catalysis. Here, using gold nanoparticles supported on the zeolite ZSM-5, we introduce a method to oxidize methane to methanol and acetic acid in water at temperatures between 120 and 240 °C using molecular oxygen in the absence of any added coreductant. Electron microscopy reveals that the catalyst does not contain gold atoms or clusters, but rather gold nanoparticles are the active component, while a mechanism involving surface adsorbed species is proposed in which methanol and acetic acid are formed via parallel pathways.

Efficient intracellular delivery of native proteins facilitated by preorganized guanidiniums on pillar[5]arene skeleton

Shuwen Guo,Qiaoxian Huang,Jianwen Wei,Shengpeng Wang,Yitao Wang,Leyong Wang,Ruibing Wang

Due to membrane impermeability of proteins, intracellular delivery of protein is of significant challenge. Although numerous protein carriers have been reported, it remains difficult to efficiently deliver proteins with different isoelectric points into cells. Herein, guanidinium perfunctionalized pillar[5]arene (GP5) was employed for efficient delivery of proteins with different isoelectric points into different cell lines, and the bioactivities of the proteins were well maintained after intracellular delivery. After comparison with linear cell-penetrating peptides, unsymmetrical guanidinium-macrocycles, primary and quaternary ammonium functionalized pillar[5]arene derivatives, and the monomer of GP5, the high protein delivery potency of GP5 was mainly attributed to the densely pre-organized guanidinium groups on both sides of the pillar[5]arene skeleton, which could not only facilitate GP5 to bind with proteins to form protein nano-aggregates, but also promote cellular uptake of proteins via interactions with cellular surface. This study offers important new insights to the design and development of cell-penetrating peptide mimetic molecules for protein transductions.

Functionalized Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolites for the Viscosity Reduction of Heavy Oil at Low Temperature

Xiao Peiwen,Li Hui,Wang Pingmei,Liu Bolun,Jing Wendan,He Lipeng,Wang Runwei,Han Xue,Zhang Zongtao,Qiu Shilun,Luo Jianhui

Herein, we propose a novel approach to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil by functional hierarchical CTMS-ZSM-5-PTMS zeolites. CTMS-ZSM-5-PTMS zeolites synthesized by asymmetric modification and selective alkali etching can reduce the viscosity of heavy oil through adsorbing asphaltenes. This method can reduce the viscosity of heavy oil from hundreds of thousands mPa·s to about ten thousand mPa·s. The work provides an economical and environmentally friendly candidate for heavy oil viscosity reduction under low-temperature conditions.
