Bisphenol A (BPA) is a potential endocrine-disrupting compound with adverse effects on both human health and the environment. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a convenient, sensitive and accurate method for BPA detection. In this paper, a ratiometric electrochemical sensor for BPA detection was developed using Ag@Fe 3 O 4 -rGO composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), with the peak oxidation current of silver nanoparticles (NPs) in the material as the reference signal and the peak oxidation current of BPA as the indicator signal. The Ag@Fe 3 O 4 -rGO composite was prepared by a simple one-step solvothermal method. Due to the chemical functionality and two-dimensional structure, the rGO combined with Ag@Fe 3 O 4 core–shell NPs provides an excellent platform for BPA detection. The morphology, structure and electrochemical performance of Ag@Fe 3 O 4 -rGO composite were characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. The proposed ratiometric electrochemical BPA sensor shows the linear detection range of 0.1–10.0 µM (R 2 = 0.997), with detection limit of 0.028 μM (S/N = 3), good selectivity, reproducibility and stability. In addition, this proposed ratiometric electrochemical sensor was successfully verified in the detection of BPA in real water samples.

Graphical Ag/Al 2 O 3 catalytic controllable synthesis of N-monomethylated amines by using CO 2 /H 2 as C 1 source has been demonstrated in a first example. The reactivity of methylated amines was reduced by the heterolytic dissociation of H 2 over the catalyst, and hence conversion of various amines to corresponding monomethylated amines was enabled with excellent selectivity. The selective synthesis of monomethylated amines with CO 2 is particularly challenging because the formation of tertiary amines is thermodynamically more favorable. Herein, a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of N-monomethylated amines from primary amines and CO 2 /H 2 is explored. First-principle calculations reveal that the dissociation of H 2 via an heterolytic route reduces the reactivity of methylated amines and thus inhibit successive methylation. In situ DRIFTS proves the process of formation and decomposition of ammonium salt by secondary amine reversible binding with H + on the Ag/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, thereby reducing its reactivity. Meanwhile, the energy barrier for the rate-determining step of monomethylation was much lower than that of overmethylation (0.34 eV vs. 0.58 eV) means amines monomethylation in preference to successive methylation. Under optimal reaction conditions, a variety of amines were converted to the corresponding monomethylated amines in good to excellent yields, and more than 90 % yield of product was obtained.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique with high sensitivity and specificity, exhibits huge application potential in tumor cells imaging. In this work, Au@Ag-Au core@double shell bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Ag-Au NPs) with excellent biocompatibility and good SERS activity were successfully designed and prepared, and Au@Ag-Au NPs showed uniform size and shape. The results of UV-vis spectra revealed that surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of Au@Ag-Au NPs generated bathochromic shift compared to that of Au@Ag NPs, inducing high SERS activity under 532 nm illumination. The limit of detection (LOD) for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA) molecules adsorbed on Au@Ag-Au NPs was 5 × 10 −9 M, indicating this alloy nanostructure with good SERS detection sensitivity. Moreover, Au@Ag-Au NPs SERS substrate exhibited almost none toxicity from the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay results. Au@Ag-Au@4MBA SERS bioprobe was grafted with reductive bovine serum albumin-folic acid (rBSA-FA), which improving SERS bioprobe stability, and providing specific recognition ability for tumor cells. Importantly, SERS imaging results of HepG2 cancer cells targeted with Au@Ag-Au@4MBA@rBSA-FA bioprobes demonstrated Au@Ag-Au NPs-based SERS bioprobe could effectively recognize tumor cells. This work indicated that high-resolution SERS imaging mode would play an important role in tumor imaging for cancer diagnosis.

The direct and rapid determination of trace cobalt ion (Co2+) in the electrolyte of zinc smelting plants is urgently needed but is impeded by the severe interference of extremely high-concentration zinc ions in the solution. Herein, colorimetric detection of Co2+by the polyvinylpyrrolidone functionalized silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) is realized in solutions with the Zn/Co ratio being high, up to (0.8–5) × 104, which is located within the ratio range in industrial solution. The high concentration of Zn2+induces a strong attenuation of Co2+-related signals in ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) extinction spectra; nevertheless, a good linear range for detecting 1–6 mg/L Co2+in 50 g/L Zn2+solution is still acquired. The strong anti-interference toward other metal ions and the mechanism understanding for trace Co2+detection in such a high-concentration Zn2+solution are also revealed by systematic analysis techniques. The results extend the AgNPs as colorimetric sensors to industrial solutions, providing a new strategy for detecting trace-metal ions in industrial plants. Keywords:colorimetric detection;silver nanoparticles;polyvinylpyrrolidone;trace Co2+determination;industrial high-concentration zinc solution

Using ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) as a gas template, we conveniently fabricated ultrathin two-dimensional layered silver-embedded graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (AgCNS) by melamine blowing method with triazine groups of pristine graphite carbon nitride. Compared with bulk g-C 3 N 4 (BCN) and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (CNS), the antibacterial activity of the optimized AgCNS-5 at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 40 ppm against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) was significantly enhanced. Under visible-light irradiation, E. coli could be completely killed by 100 µg·mL −1 of AgCNS-5 within 30 min. The mechanism of enhanced antibacterial activity was systematically investigated by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), photoluminescence spectra (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and photogenerated current densities. Surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with g-C 3 N 4 was found to lead to an enhancement of visible light absorption and an acceleration of photo-induced electron-hole migration/separation, which is responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic bactericidal performance. Through trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) techniques, the bactericidal mechanism was revealed that the species of •O 2 − and •OH play important roles in antibacterial process. Considering the facile preparation and excellent performance, AgCNS-5 may be a promising and competitive visible-light-driven candidate toward sterilizing agent.

In this work, a flexible Janus composites membrane fabricated by large-scale electrospinning, a rapid plasma etching process, and reproducible surface modification is proposed for stable and efficient solar desalination. The upper hydrophobic plasmonic absorbers are used for effective solar absorption while the bottom hydrophilic polymer layer is for water supply and salt resistant. The heat stability and cycle tests demonstrate their superior performance for steam generation (energy conversion efficiency with 76.06% under 6 sun and stable water output with 7.533 kg m −2 h −1 ). Such Janus membrane provides an alternative way for direct solar desalination, which is achieved by a scalable and cost-effective process.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising method for rapid and sensitive detection of pesticide residues. Herein, a three-dimensional MoS2/Au/Ag nanostructure was developed by employing composite systems containing semiconductors, noble metal nanoparticles, and internal standard. The MoS2 nanoflowers provide abundant anchors for the loading of plasmonic nanoparticles so as to generate intense electromagnetic “hot spots,” and the Au-MBN/Ag nanostructures can increase the accuracy of SERS detection with the calibration ability of the internal standard molecules (4-mercaptobenzonitrile, 4-MBN). Therefore, the MoS2/Au/Ag nanostructures integrate the advantages of high-enhancement SERS substrates and high-accuracy ratiometric Raman detection. Moreover, the nanostructures were fabricated via a facile procedure and showed high sensitivity, accuracy, and reproducibility in SERS detection. The nanostructures also showed good linear fitting between the ratios of Raman intensity and logarithmic concentrations of analytes in ratiometric SERS analysis. In addition, thiabendazole (TBZ) in apple juice was successfully detected by using the as-prepared SERS substrates with a limit of detection down to 0.1 ppm in practical applications. To conclude, the MoS2/Au/Ag nanostructures showed excellent SERS activity in ratiometric analysis and the substrate is expected to have great potential for the quantitative detection of low-concentration pesticide residues.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has tremendous significance in the fields of ultrasensitive detection and real-time in situ monitoring in catalysis. However, it remains a challenge to simultaneously achieve higher-quality SERS and excellent plasmonic catalytic properties in a nano/microstructure substrate under random excitation light. Here, we propose the design of a three-dimensional (3D) popcorn-like silver (Ag) microstructure (MS) with diameter of 1.2 ± 0.1 µm and a unique rough surface topography , realize a wide surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band ranging from 300 nm to 1100 nm, approximating a full spectrum. The popcorn-like Ag MSs with full-spectrum property effectively broaden the spectral overlap between the SPR band and wavelength of excitation light or absorption of probe molecules. Moreover, the 3D popcorn-like Ag MSs were used to construct a monolayer film array substrate on silicon wafer with a good homogeneity over large areas by an interfacial self-assembly method. The monolayer Ag MSs film array substrate can provide abundant “hot spots” and present excellent SERS performance for sensitive detection of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) with a low detection limit of 10 −9 M. The single-layer Ag MSs film array with superior SERS activity is utilized for in situ monitoring the plasmonic catalytic kinetics of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) dimerized into 4, 4′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) under 532 nm and 785 nm excitation, respectively. The mechanism on plasmonic catalytic reaction of the popcorn-like Ag MSs substrate is systemically investigated by experimental and theoretical simulations aspects. The Ag MSs film array substrate will offer a new strategy to further explore applications of SERS in sensors, photocatalysis , and bio/chemical analysis.

Nanocomposites are effective methods for the treatment of microbial infections. In this work, zinc oxide nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple and mild method, and successfully loaded on polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDA Mt) to prepare nanocomposites (ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt) with potent antibacterial ability. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the nanoparticles in ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt were quasi-spherical, and the particle size ranged from 5 nm to 45 nm. The energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS)-mapping verified the presence of Zn, Ag, O, Al, Si and C elements in the synthesized ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt was also tested against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Due to the synergistic antibacterial effect between zinc oxide nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles, ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt exhibited higher antiseptic activity than silver nanoparticles supported polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (Ag/PDA-Mt) and zinc oxide nanoparticles supported polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (ZnO/PDA-Mt). The biocompatibility of ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt was evaluated by cytotoxicity assay. The results demonstrated that the ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt nanocomposites have potential for antibacterial applications.

Antibacterial sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) gels were prepared via immobilizing ZnO and/or Ag/AgCl in situ to inhibit the aggregation of nano-photocatalyst. Epichlorohydrin was used as a crosslinking agent to prepare CMC gel, simultaneously introducing chlorine-containing branch chains as Cl reservoir to deposit AgCl. The composite gels presented pH responsive swelling properties, with the minimum swelling ratio at pH 8 and pH 4 for CMC gels containing Ag/AgCl and ZnO, respectively. Zn 2+ release from the nanocomposite gels was much greater in acidic than in neutral. Photocatalytic degradation constants of methyl orange by the composite gels under sunlight were greater than UV irradiation. Ag/AgCl loaded gel showed a degradation rate of 71.3 % under sunlight for 1 h, with a rate constant approximately 10.2 times higher than ZnO loaded gel. Extract liquids with the gel content below 0.33 mg/mL were noncytotoxicity. The nanocomposite gels presented good bactericidal rate against E. coli and S. aureus under sunlight for 6 h, comparatively to those in dark for 24 h. Bacteriostatic activity of Ag/AgCl loaded gel under sunlight for 6 h was much greater than that in dark for 24 h. The biocompatible nanocomposite gels with sunlight-catalyzed antibacterial activity would broaden the application of CMC gels.

Combining the unique advantages of two-dimensional transition metal carbon/nitrogen compounds (MXene) and the excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of noble metal materials, MXene/Ag NPs films were proposed as nanocarriers for SERS-traceable drug delivery. The films were prepared by two-step self-assembly on positively charged silicon wafers using virtue of the high evaporation of ethyl acetate, the Marangoni effect, and an oil/water/oil three-phase system. With 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as the probe molecule, the SERS detection limit was 10 −8 M and had shown a good linear relationship in the range of 10 −8 –10 −3 M. Simultaneously, the film had good uniformity, repeatability, and stability. When Ti 3 C 2 T x /Ag NPs films were used as nanocarriers, the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded onto the surface through 4-MBA, and the tracking and monitoring were realized by SERS. The addition of glutathione (GSH) triggered the thiol exchange reaction, resulting in the shedding of 4-MBA from the surface of the film, which indirectly achieved the efficient release of DOX. Furthermore, the loading of DOX and the drug release effect triggered by GSH maintained a certain stability in serum, which provided a potential possibility for the subsequent loading and release of drugs by films with three-dimensional structures as scaffolds in biological therapy. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to this endeavor, bacterial infections and contamination of medical device surfaces and biointerfaces remain a challenge. Herein, we constructed an Ag/MoS2 nanozyme-modified hydrogel (Ag-HG) dressing with enhanced adhesion and self-healing. Ag-HG showed remarkable antibacterial effects against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The Ag-HG dressing exhibited antibacterial properties with antibacterial efficacies of 72.6% and 72.7% against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Moreover, this dressing disabled bacteria more efficiently with the assistance of H2O2, reaching antibacterial efficacies of 99.99% and 99.92%, respectively. Multiple modes of antimicrobial action appeared to act synergistically to inhibit microbial growth in the hydrogel dressing. Ag-HG generated reactive oxygen species to damage bacteria and trapped and confined them owing to its porous structure. The synergistic antibacterial effect of the two aspects enhanced the sterilization performance. In vivo experiments showed that the Ag-HG dressing could effectively treat skin surface wounds and accelerate wound healing. The biocompatibility of the Ag-HG dressing was verified using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. In summary, adhesion-enhanced self-healing nanozyme-modified hydrogel dressing with synergistically antibacterial activity is a promising candidate for applications that require biocompatible and antimicrobial surfaces.
