The production of high value-added liquid products by catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose has become an effective way to realize the efficient utilization of biomass. This work synthesized a series of Co-Ce, Co-Fe and Co-Mg composite metal catalysts and used them to obtain furans and ketones production. In addition, the CO 2 was used as a pyrolysis atmosphere to investigate the synergistic effect between CO 2 and the prepared catalyst. The results showed that the catalyst effectively promoted the depolymerization of cellulose and improved the oxygen transfer behavior between volatile matters during cellulose pyrolysis. As a reaction medium, CO 2 influenced the carbon distribution of products, thereby increasing syngas yield, and the CO 2 atmosphere promoted the formation of furans and ketones. Compared with those obtained by the non-catalytic pyrolysis in N 2 atmosphere, the relative contents of furans and ketones in the liquid products produced by the catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose in CO 2 atmosphere increased by about 13.38% and 9.8%. In the CO 2 environment, the generation ability for furans was Co-Mg catalyst > Co-Ce catalyst > Co-Fe catalyst, and the generation ability for ketones was Co-Ce catalyst > Co-Mg catalyst > Co-Fe catalyst. These works provide an important way for the efficient preparation of furans and ketones from biomass pyrolysis.

Ni-Mg-Al hydrotalcite-derived materials promoted with Ce, Zr or Fe were prepared by the co-precipitation method, which exhibited excellent performance in steam reforming of toluene (SRT) at low temperature. Especially, Fe-doped catalyst had higher catalytic activity and stability at 400 °C, which maintained almost 100% toluene conversion during the SRT reaction (3 h). Moreover, it also had higher hydrogen production and better selectivity for hydrogen production. The physico-chemical characterizations and model simulation indicate its high dispersion of active sites and accessibility of reactants to active sites: uniform dispersion of active sites (SEM, TEM and EDX), large specific surface area (151 m 2 /g), pore volume (0.84 cm 3 /g) and average pore diameter (22.1 nm), small crystallite size (34.9 nm), desirable Ni species reducibility (TPR), high basicity (TPD), low metal carbide formation (XPS), and good adsorption affinity with toluene (−18.391 kJ mol −1 , DFT). Moreover, less carbon was deposited on the Fe-containing catalyst through measuring the amorphous carbon and CNTs by the TG-MS method, which was due to the tip-growth mechanism of CNTs. Considering lower toluene conversion temperature, higher hydrogen yield, and better resistance to carbon deposition, this study may be meaningful in development of SRT at low temperature.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation has drawn increasing attention in eliminating the recalcitrant organic pollutants in water. Manipulation of generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) over Ce doped Mn 2 O 3 during the PMS activation was firstly reported for the complete degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in this study. Ce in-situ introduction can greatly enhance the PMS activation performance of Mn 2 O 3 . For example, 100% of 2,4-DCP degradation can be obtained at 90 min over 4 wt% Ce doped Mn 2 O 3 at pH 7 (82.1% for Mn 2 O 3 at 90 min). The reaction rate constant ( k ) was also about 3.6 times higher than that of Mn 2 O 3 (0.0668 min −1 for Ce doped Mn 2 O 3 vs. 0.0186 min −1 for Mn 2 O 3 ). Besides 1 O 2 , OH and SO 4 − were identified and involved in 2,4-DCP degradation process over Ce doped Mn 2 O 3 , while only 1 O 2 was detected over 3D Mn 2 O 3 . Moreover, the contribution of OH and SO 4 − to 2,4-DCP degradation can be regulated by adjusting the Ce doping amount. The key role of Ce substitution in the regulation of reactive oxygen species was further investigated by XPS and electrochemical experiments. The Ce dopant can lead to a higher current density and greater reductive capability due to the improved charge transfer capability, which is important to the generation of more aggressive OH and SO 4 − and complete 2,4-DCP degradation.

In this study, Ce ions were doped into the crystal lattice of TNTs and bonded to O, which resulted in the generation of CeO 2 and expansion of the lattice defects of TNTs. Then, TNTs and Ce doped TNTs (Ce-TNTs) were coated on the surface of bamboo fibre materials by layer-by-layer self-assembly to refine the flame retardant performance of the materials. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) and energy disperse spectrum (EDS) analysis indicated that the TNTs and Ce-TNTs were uniformly distributed on the surface of the bamboo fibre materials, and the Ti content reached ∼3.90 wt% and ∼3.70 wt%, respectively. Results from the cone calorimeter test showed that the flame retardant performance of the bamboo fibre materials was enhanced after the TNTs were coated on the surface of the materials (TNTs@Fibre). When Ce-TNTs were used as substitute for TNTs, the flame retardant performance of the Ce-TNTs@Fibre materials was further improved. The TTI and FPI were prolonged to 39.7s and 0.073 m 2 s/kW, and the av-HRR and THR were reduced to 126.9 kW/m 2 and 35.54 MJ/m 2 respectively. Moreover, pSEA, TSP and pSPR were decrease to 292.5 m 2 /kg, 3.70 m 2 and 0.039 m 2 /s. DSC and TG results demonstrated that the TNTs and Ce-TNTs enhanced the both thermostability and thermo oxidative stability of the materials.

In this study, a set of well-defined multiarm star copolymers , hyperbranched poly(ethylenimine)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (bPEI- g -PEG) with different PEG grafting ratios were synthesized. The star PEG-based coatings were then prepared by immobilizing the corresponding copolymers onto poly(dopamine) (PDA)-coated substrates. The chemical composition , hydrophilicity , surface topography , and thickness of the coatings were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (WCA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE), respectively. Furthermore, the surface PEG chain density of star PEG-based coating was evaluated quantitatively and compared with that of linear PEG-based coating. Our results showed that the amount of proteins (albumin from bovine serum, fibrinogen, and lysozyme) adsorbed on the star PEG-based coating as measured by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was found to be dependent on the surface PEG chain density, which was controlled by the polymer incubation concentrations and PEG grafting ratios. Generally, the star-shaped PEG gave the surface with higher PEG chain density than linear ones and the amount of adsorbed proteins decreased with increasing surface PEG chain density. At last, the star PEG-based coating was successfully applied into the capillary inner surface for protein separation by capillary electrophoresis (CE).

Sb-doped SnO2 electrode was fabricated by the one-step pulse electro-codeposition method, and was modified through either cerium dioxide nanoparticle (nano-CeO2) or cerium ion doping. The results showed that the effects of nano-CeO2 doping and cerium ion doping are quite different. Nano-CeO2 doping shrinks the unit cell volume, improves the degree of crystallinity and refines crystalline grains, while cerium ion doping expands the volume and deteriorates the crystallinity. Nano-CeO2 doping mitigates the surface antimony enrichment and promotes the complete oxidation of antimony so that the majority of antimony oxidation states exist as the Sb5+ state, but cerium ion doping aggravates the enrichment and increases the Sb3+ content. Electrochemical phenol degradation showed that the Ti/Sb–SnO2–CeO2 electrode has a higher degradation efficiency and its kinetic rate constant is 1.46 times as much as that of Ti/Ce–Sb–SnO2. Besides, due to the compact active layer of Ti/Sb–SnO2–CeO2 protecting the titanium substrate from passivation, the accelerated service lifetime of Ti/Sb–SnO2–CeO2 is prolonged, which is 1.28 times as long as that of Ti/Ce–Sb–SnO2.

Catalyst interface determines the activity and stability of partial oxidation of methane (POM) toward syngas under high temperatures crucially. Herein, Ni catalysts supported on CeO 2 were prepared under different pretreatment atmospheres to construct an optimal and robust interface. Ni/CeO 2 catalyst pretreated in H 2 (Ni/CeO 2 -H 2 ) exhibits the higher activity and the better stability than Ni/CeO 2 -Ar and Ni/CeO 2 -air catalysts. The Ni-O-Ce interfacial site in Ni/CeO 2 -H 2 catalyst shows the lower reduction temperature, indicating the enhanced H-spillover effect and enhanced oxidation resistance of Ni under POM conditions. Moreover, the XPS and in situ Raman results show that Ni/CeO 2 -H 2 contains more surface oxygen vacancies for adsorbing and activating oxygen, further contributing to the reaction activity. The in situ DRIFTS results indicate that the CH 4 could react with the lattice oxygen to form formate and carbonate, and further decompose to CO and CO 2 . These findings deepen the fundamental understanding of Ni/CeO 2 catalysts for POM reaction.

Three-dimensional flower-like Ce–Mo micro/nano composite oxides with different Ce/Mo atomic ratios (f-Ce10-xMoxOδ) were synthesized as effective bifunctional catalysts for one-pot conversion of fructose to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) via dehydration and aerobic oxidation. The catalytic activities of f-Ce10-xMoxOδ depended on their structure and physicochemical properties, which were closely related to their elementary compositions. The f-Ce9Mo1Oδ, which possesses polymeric octahedral MoOz species, the highest Oα ratio, BET surface area, and acidity density, exhibited the highest catalytic activity for DFF production. High DFF yields of 94% and 74% were obtained from f-Ce9Mo1Oδ catalyzed HMF oxidation and “one-pot” fructose conversion, respectively. Furthermore, f-Ce9Mo1Oδ is easily prepared, has low cost, and is ecofriendly, which has potential application in industrial production of DFF from fructose.

A series of La and Ce doped hydroxyl FeAl intercalated montmorillonite (FeAl-Mt) were prepared by a co-intercalation method for catalytic oxidation of Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) by a heterogeneous photo Fenton process under natural sunlight irradiation. The physicochemical properties of the obtained catalysts were deciphered by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results showed that Ce or La doped FeAl Keggin polyoxocations were intercalated into the gallery of montmorillonite and the physicochemical properties of intercalated FeAl Keggin polyoxocations were mildly changed after Ce or La doping, resulting in defects and lattice vacancies. The doping of Ce or La could effectively improve the catalytic performance of FeAl-Mt measured by heterogeneous photo Fenton degradation of RB19 catalyzed by the obtained products. The synergistic effect between the doped element and FeAl intercalated montmorillonite played a crucial role in the enhancement of heterogeneous catalytic activity under natural sunlight irradiation.

Fenton catalytic oxidation is a prevalent advanced oxidation technology that can be integrated with photocatalysis and thermal catalysis to enhance the degradation of antibiotic wastewater. Zeolites, a distinctive class of crystalline material, are extensively employed in Fenton-like catalytic oxidation due to their robust structure and exceptional catalytic efficacy. In this study, we constructed a novel Cu/Ce-X catalyst via an ion exchange process based on a Na-X zeolite matrix. The crystal phases, framework structures, elemental compositions, specific surface areas, and photothermal catalytic activity of the composite catalyst were characterized systematically. The removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) was 87.69 % in the photothermal Fenton-like degradation, and the apparent first-order kinetics rate constant was 13.6 times, 6.52 times, and 1.72 times greater than those of the Fenton-like, photo Fenton-like, and thermal Fenton-like systems, respectively. The adaptability, reusability, reaction mechanisms, and degradation pathways of the fabricated catalysts for the removal of TCH were investigated. The experimental and characterization results demonstrate that the redox cycling of Cu + /Cu 2+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ was enhanced through photogenerated electrons and thermal effects in the catalytic degradation process. The primary active species generated in the photothermal Fenton-like system is ·OH. The findings of this research provide a viable strategy for the treatment and remediation of water pollution.

It is desired but challenging to develop a non-noble metal catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol with O 2 under solvent-free conditions. Herein, a series of Ce-doped high entropy oxides (Ce/HEOs) were prepared via co-precipitation and subsequent thermal treatment method. It was found that, the doping of Ce could remarkably promote the catalytic activity for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The improved activity was ascribed to the good distribution of active Ce species, the increased oxygen vacancies, and the synergistic effect between CeO 2 and high entropy oxides (HEOs). In addition, the surface oxygen of Ce/HEOs towards Ce displayed stronger reducibility compared to that of bare CeO 2 , endowing it stronger deprotonation ability towards benzyl alcohol during the reaction. The prepared catalyst exhibited satisfactory reusability and stability owing to the entropy-stabilized effect of HEOs and the interaction between CeO 2 and HEOs, and negligible loss in catalytic activity was observed after seven runs. Besides, DFT calculations disclosed that, with the doping of Ce, the Ce/HEOs catalyst possessed stronger adsorption ability towards benzyl alcohol, and lower free energy was required for the rate-determining step during the whole oxidative reaction. This work gave some insights into the promotional effect of Ce doped into high entropy oxides for the solvent-free catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM) for both hydrogen (H 2 ) production and high pressure storage shows promising potential in mobile/distributed fuel cell stations or vehicles. Currently, achieving efficient H 2 production with low CO selectivity (S-CO) at lower temperatures remains a challenge for its application in these fields (rapid start and running in cycles). Herein, the catalyst of Ce-modified Cu nanoparticles with N-doped carbon encapsulation (Cu-CeO 2 @PVP catalyst) is developed to give excellent H 2 production rate at low temperatures ranging from 110 °C to 180 °C, ensuring excellent hydrothermal stability. The H 2 production rate of 32.56 μmol·g cat -1 ·s −1 at 180 °C is 6.1 times to 10.2 times higher than those of commercial catalysts, which demonstrates its superior performance. The combined effect of Cu + /Cu 0 and CeO 2 promotes the H 2 production from CH 3 OH/H 2 O. It also suppresses the CO formation by enhancing the H 2 O dissociation, CO conversion and HCOOH decomposition in APRM. The stable high purified H 2 flow from the integrated slurry bed APRM device can start immediately the fuel cell vehicle without any delay.
