The aqueous interface-rich system has been proposed to act as a trigger and a reservoir for reactive radicals, playing a crucial role in chemical reactions. Although much is known about the redox reactivity of water microdroplets at “droplets-in-gas” interfaces, it remains poorly understood for “bubbles-in-water” interfaces that are created by feeding gas through the porous membrane of the gas diffusion electrode. Here we reveal the spontaneous generation of highly reactive redox radical species detected by using electron paramagnetic resonance under such conditions without applying any bias and loading any catalysts. In combination with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, the redox feature has been further verified through several probe molecules. Unexpectedly, introducing crown ether allows to isolate and stabilize both water radical cations and hydrated electrons thus substantially increasing redox reactivity. Our finding suggests a reactive microenvironment at the interface of the gas diffusion electrode owing to the coexistence of oxidative and reductive species.

The inherent susceptibility of zinc vapor Zn (g) to oxidation during conventional pyrometallurgical zinc production fundamentally limits direct metallic zinc recovery. This study developed an innovative multi-field controlling condensation technique to address this challenge through synergistic regulation of atmospheric composition (Zn (g) -CO₂-CO-N₂ system), thermal gradients, and concentration fields in smelting operations. Combining thermodynamic simulations with pilot experiments, the oxidation inhibition mechanisms were systematically elucidated, quantitative relationships between operational parameters and zinc recovery efficiency were established. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that increasing the reaction temperature, elevating CO and zinc vapor concentrations in the gas phase, and reducing H 2 O and SO 2 contents can effectively inhibit zinc vapor oxidation. Experimental validation demonstrated exceptional zinc vapor oxidation inhibition rates of 95.7–99.1 % under optimized conditions: 1050 °C reaction temperature, CO/CO₂ ratios of 3.0–5.0, 0.34 mL/min zinc vapor flux, 610–625 °C condensation temperature, and 60 min retention time without H 2 O and SO 2 . Additionally, this methodology enables precise morphological control of condensed products, achieving tunable zinc crystal structures ranging from dendritic to compact granular morphologies through strategic manipulation of condensation kinetics. This breakthrough establishes a robust technical pathway for sustainable zinc recovery from smelting off-gases while providing fundamental insights into vapor-phase metal purification strategies.

Periodontitis is an infectious disease caused by plaque-associated microorganisms. The condition is characterized by the activation of oxidative stress and immune responses, which contribute to tissue destruction. Carbon monoxide (CO)-based gas therapy, utilizing CO releasing molecules (CORMs), presents a promising therapeutic strategy; however, its efficacy is constrained by the short half-life and limited cellular uptake of CORMs. In this study, metal-phenolic networks (MPN) were employed as a carrier to stabilize CORMs via metal-ligand coordination, thereby forming a nanocomplex designated as CO@MPN. This nanocomplex demonstrated effective scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and exhibited ROS-responsive CO release. Following phagocytosis by macrophages, CO@MPN significantly decreased intracellular ROS levels, reduced the production of inflammatory factors in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages, facilitated macrophage polarization towards the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, and activated heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) to further attenuate inflammation. In murine models of experimental periodontitis, CO@MPN significantly inhibited inflammatory bone loss and exerted macrophage-regulating effects. The findings underscore the potential of ROS-responsive CO gas therapy as a promising strategy for the treatment of periodontitis and the management of other inflammatory diseases.

In this study, a novel alginate-cyclodextrin hybrid bubble hydrogel was developed for the stable encapsulation of ethylene gas. Ethylene gas was introduced into aqueous bubble systems prepared using sodium alginate (SA), α-cyclodextrin (α-CD), SA + α-CD, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), or SA + β-CD. Among these, the α-CD bubble system demonstrated the highest ethylene-loading ability (0.88 mL/g carrier ). However, over 50 % of the encapsulated ethylene was released from all bubble systems within 60 h due to cavity disintegration, demonstrating that these bubble systems were unstable for gas storage. Therefore, to enhance gas storage stability, the bubble systems were converted into bubble hydrogels. The gas contents of SA, SA + α-CD, and SA + β-CD bubble hydrogels significantly decreased to 0.31, 0.23 and 0.18 mL/g carrier , respectively. This phenomenon could be attributed to bubble rupture and coalescence induced by mechanical stress during gelation. Regarding storage stability, 70–80 % ethylene was retained in the bubble hydrogel systems at room temperature after 28 days storage, indicating that the hydrogel structure significantly improved gas-storage stability. This can be ascribed to the hydrogel film coating and the water layer around the surface of cavities. Therefore, the bubble hydrogel represents a promising encapsulation matrix for fruit ripening applications.

Acetone, a critical biomarker in exhaled breath for the diagnosis of diabetes, necessitates the development of high-performance gas sensors for real-time monitoring. In this work, bimetallic In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 porous nanorods with tunable In/Co molar ratios were synthesized via a hydrothermal approach. The optimized sensor 3-ICO (In:Co = 3:10, molar ratio), exhibited remarkable acetone-sensing performance with a high response of 125.6 to 10 ppm acetone at 250 °C, ultrafast response/recovery times (45 s/19 s), outstanding selectivity, and long-term stability. The integration of materials characterization with density functional theory (DFT) simulations demonstrated that the p-n heterojunction formed between Co 3 O 4 and In 2 O 3 facilitates interfacial charge transfer, enhancing both the oxygen vacancy concentration and specific surface area. These synergistic effects significantly improve acetone adsorption energy and electron transport efficiency. This work highlights the pivotal role of heterojunction engineering in optimizing the detection performance of metal-oxide semiconductors for low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs), offering promising applications in non-invasive diabetes diagnosis.

Pillar[ n ]arenes (P[ n ]As, n = 5–10), a new generation of macrocyclic hosts, display interesting properties such as 3D π -electron cavity, host-guest interactions, good stability, and easy functionalization, which make these polymers very promising for separation applications. In particular, extended P[ n ]As (EP[ n ]As) show large-sized cavities, structural flexibility, cavity adaptability, and synthetic accessibility. These characteristics have been exploited in this work, which reports for the first time the investigation of two EP[ n ]As (LP6A-C10 and BpP6A-C10) as stationary phases for gas chromatography (GC). LP6A-C10 and BpP6A-C10 columns exhibited moderate polarity (average polarity 117 and 118) and high column efficiencies (3000 plates/m and 3235 plates/m). These columns achieved complete challenging separation of halogenated benzene, benzaldehyde, phenol, and aniline isomers, which are difficult to resolve due to their high resemblance in structures and properties. Experimental results demonstrate the high selectivity and inertness of the prepared columns and their distinct advantages if compared with commercial HP-5 and HP-35 columns. EP[ n ]As columns displayed good separation repeatability with RSD values of 0.01%–0.02 % for run-to-run, 0.01%–0.22 % for day-to-day, and 1.36–3.56 % for column-to-column. This work demonstrates the promising future of EP[ n ]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

In this paper, we propose a composite nano-microstructure comprising Ti3C2 and nanogold as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active substrate for the highly sensitive sensing of amine gases. The adsorption performance of Ti3C2 was tested by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. Excellent adsorption ability of Ti3C2 was observed for aniline, phenylenediamine, and diethylamine, with adsorption amounts exceeding 2210, 1740, and 970 ng cm−2, respectively. The synergistic effect of the electromagnetic properties of Ti3C2 and nano-Au in the Ti3C2/nano-Au composite nanostructures was verified by finite-difference time-domain simulation. Partial chemical enhancement between Ti3C2 and aniline was verified by photocurrent tests. To achieve assay specificity, mercaptoacetaldehyde (MA) was adopted as a recognition probe. The Schiff base reaction between aldehyde groups and amino groups produces the –CN– bond, with the Raman characteristic peak at 1635 cm−1, enabling precise amine identification with the SERS chip. To obtain the Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensing chip, nano Au was deposited on an indium tin oxide substrate using the chronoamperometric method, followed by nano-Au aldolization modification through Au-SH interactions and the spin-coating of a Ti3C2 film layer. Due to the high affinity of Ti3C2 for amine molecules and the low SERS background signal of MA and Ti3C2, the SERS spectra could be used for ultra-sensitive detection of amines. Three amine gases, i.e. aniline, p-phenylenediamine, and diethylamine, were detected quantitatively using the intensity ratiometric method on the functionalized Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensor chip. The detection limits were 1, 1, and 20 parts per billion, respectively. By identifying the characteristic fingerprint peaks and comparing the relative intensity of the –CN– characteristic peak, quantitative analysis of the components of aniline and p-phenylenediamine mixed gas was accomplished. These findings demonstrate that the Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensor chip offers a promising approach for the detection of amine gas molecules and holds potential for applications in environmental monitoring, disease diagnosis, and chemical analysis.

Morphology and structure play a crucial role in influencing the performance of gas sensors. Hollow structures, in particular, not only increase the specific surface area of the material but also enhance the collision frequency of gases within the shell, and have been studied in depth in the field of gas sensing. Taking SnO2as an illustrative example, a dual-shell structure SnO2(D-SnO2) was prepared. D-SnO2@Polyaniline (PANI) (DSPx, x represents D-SnO2molar content) composites were synthesized via the in situ oxidative polymerization method, and simultaneously deposited onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate to fabricate an electrode-free, flexible sensor. The impact of the SnO2content on the sensing performance of the DSPx-based sensor for NH3detection at room temperature was discussed. The results showed that the response of a 20 mol% D-SnO2@PANI (DSP20) sensor to 100 ppm NH3at room temperature is 37.92, which is 5.1 times higher than that of a pristine PANI sensor. Moreover, the DSP20 sensor demonstrated a rapid response and recovery rate at the concentration of 10 ppm NH3, with response and recovery times of 182 s and 86 s.

Bamboo vinegar is a liquid biomass with a huge yield and complex chemical composition. At present, the relative quantification of bamboo vinegar has been investigated in most studies. To analyze twelve compounds from bamboo vinegar simultaneously, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and an external standard method were used to develop an analytical method. In this method, chromatographic separations of all compounds were above 1.5. The linear range was between 0.100 and 10.000 mg/L, and the coefficient of determination (R2) was between 0.9981 and 0.9997, indicating a good linear relationship. The limit of detection (LOD) was between 0.004 and 0.780 mg/L; the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was between 0.016 and 3.120 mg/L; the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of instrument precision and method stability were less than 8%; the recovery rate was between 89.25% and 113.77%, and its RSD was between 0.44% and 5.70%. Using this method, fourteen bamboo vinegars and six wood vinegars were analyzed, and it was found that the content of propionic acid, phenol, and 2-methoxyphenol was higher in most samples. In addition, the differences in physicochemical properties between distilled bamboo vinegar and its original solution after atmospheric distillation were investigated.

One of the main issues with membrane-based gas separation lies in the unexplored relationship between the precursors and their derived carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs). Herein, we designed a series of TR polymers with gradient PBO content as precursors to investigate the carbonization mechanisms of PBO structure. The process of transforming the polymer precursor into carbon structure throughout pyrolysis involves utilizing an array of characterization techniques along with pyrolysis simulation. Results indicated that a higher PBO content leads to stronger molecular sieving effect of the resulting CMSM. The TR-CMS-50 membrane demonstrated exceptional gas separation performance with high permeability (P H2 = 3154 and P CO2 = 1495 Barrer) as well as ultra-high H 2 /CH 4 (384) and CO 2 /CH 4 (166) selectivity, which far exceeded the newest Upper bound line, showing significant potential for practical applications. This may can be attributed to “delayed effect” of the PBO structure which requires pyrolysis at higher temperatures, leading to more intense pyrolysis and the release of nitrogen-containing substances. Meanwhile, PBO has a cyclic system with a strong aromatic structure that closely resembles a carbon strand, which probably facilitates aromatization and enables it to more easily integrate into CMS structure, resulting in a more orderly arrangement in the Langmuir phase and generating higher concentration of pyrrolic-N (58.7 % vs. 44.1 %) as well as graphitic-N (31.6 % vs. 17.2 %). Thus, increasing the PBO content makes the derived CMS denser and significantly enhances its molecular sieving capacity. This study offers new insights into the development of precursor structures that creates high-performance CMSMs.

This study presents a room temperature triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor based on the macro-bend fiber. The sensor achieves the rapid and high sensitivity measurement of TEA gas by coating the bending section of the optical fiber with ZnOHF-ZnO nanomaterial . The macro-bend fiber structure increases the penetration depth of the evanescent field transmitting along the no-core optical fiber (NCF), what allowing more light to leak into layer of the gas-sensitive material and thus enhancing the sensitivity to TEA gas. Different sensing probes were fabricated and compared for the coating layers with ZnOHF and ZnOHF-ZnO, respectively. The results showed that the sensitivity of the ZnOHF-ZnO coated sensor was 0.0044 dB/ppm, which was three times higher than that of the ZnOHF-coated sensor. Other sensing performance was experimentally demonstrated with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 ppm, a response time of 16 s, and a recovery time of 18 s, enabling fast detection for TEA gas. Finally, the working mechanism has been explained. This macro-bend fiber-based TEA gas sensor has the advantages of small size, low operating temperature, fast response time, and good selectivity, making it suitable for the rapid identification and detection of TEA gas.

In this paper, pure SnO 2 and SnO 2 composite materials (ZSnO 2 ) modified with different amounts of ZIF-67 (20 mg, 60 mg) were synthesized utilizing a simple solvothermal method. The gas sensing performance of these sensitive materials was tested, and the results manifested that at a low operating temperature of 170 ℃, the responses of ZSnO 2 -60 and ZSnO 2 -20–50 ppm triethylamine (TEA) gas reached 142.6 and 83.7, respectively, which was ∼3.81 and ∼2.24 times that of pure SnO 2 (34.7). In addition, both doped samples had lower operating temperature, excellent selectivity and repeatability towards TEA gas. The doping of ZIF-67 led to oxygen vacancies increasing, specific surface area amplifying and p-n heterojunctions forming between Co 3 O 4 and SnO 2 in ZSnO 2 nanocomposites. These synergistic effects enhanced the gas sensitivity of ZSnO 2 nanocomposites to TEA gas.
