Z-scheme AgBr/β-MnO2 hydrogel enabling synergistic photothermal evaporation and Photocatalysis for efficient volatile organic compounds abatement

Jia-Li Wu,Lei Xu,Guo-Wu Zhan,Ming-Lai Fu,Baoling Yuan

A bifunctional evaporator for sola evaporation and photocatalysis was developed. • The 3D hydrogel shows broad-spectrum solar absorption and high energy efficiency. • The Z-scheme heterojunction boosts charge separation and phenol degradation. • A detailed degradation mechanism and reaction pathway of phenol are proposed. Solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to its environmental friendliness, high efficiency, and low-carbon-emission characteristics. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often not effectively removed during the evaporation process, which can lead to secondary contamination of the collected condensate. Integrating SIE with photocatalysis for seawater desalination has therefore emerged as an effective strategy to mitigate the accumulation of VOCs in the condensate during seawater treatment. In this study, manganese (IV) oxide nanomaterials were coated with silver bromide to construct an AgBr/β-MnO 2 heterojunction that suppresses the fast charge annihilation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs and enhances photocatalytic efficiency. The resulting composite was further incorporated into a photothermal hydrogel (AgBr/β-MnO 2 -PH) matrix with excellent photothermal evaporation properties, forming a three-dimensional (3D) photocatalytic evaporation system capable of significantly improving the removal efficiency of VOCs during photothermal evaporation. Under standard solar irradiation (1 sun, 1 kW m −2 ), the porous acrylamide-based hydrogel evaporator achieved an evaporation rate of 3.47 kg m −2  h −1 and a photothermal transformation efficiency of 93.98%. In-situ irradiated XPS reveals light-induced electron enrichment on AgBr accompanied by electron depletion on β-MnO 2 , providing experimental support for a direct Z -scheme interfacial charge-transfer pathway that promotes carrier separation and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated photocatalysis. Consequently, the AgBr/β-MnO 2 -PH system exhibits a removal efficiency exceeding 99% when treating phenol-containing wastewater. Overall, this work demonstrates an effective strategy for coupling SIE with photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. The developed AgBr/β-MnO 2 -PH provides a promising approach for producing freshwater from VOC-contaminated sources and offers new insights into the application of solar energy in seawater desalination and wastewater purification. Lithium extraction from low-grade brines via strain-induced electronic structure modulation of MnO2 nanorods through Mg incorporation

Yang Bao,YunJia Ling,ZeYing Ji,Hongru Zhou,Shaoxian Song,Feifei Jia,Jianbo Li,Mildred Quintana

In this study, the incorporation of Mg2+ induced the transformation of MnO2 from the original cubic [MnO6] octahedron to a flattened conformation (FLA-MnO2). The flattened conformation mitigated structural deformation of the [Mn3+·O6] octahedron by inhibiting the J–T aberration during the reduction process of Mn4+, thereby improving the selective adsorption capacity of lithium. When used in hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI), FLA-MnO2 exhibited a high Li+ adsorption capacity of 30.14 mg g−1 in 32.74 mg L−1 Li+ ion solution, with low energy consumption of 0.45 Wh g−1. Notably, the FLA-MnO2‖AC HCDI cell exhibited high stability, maintaining 82% of its capacity over 100 cycles. This was evidenced by the 82% capacity retention and low Mn loss (1.3%) over 100 cycles. Finally, the excellent selective extraction performance of Li+ ions was demonstrated in Lop Nor, the low-grade original brine of the XieLi salt flats. The calculated separation factors for Li+/Na+, Li+/K+, Li+/Ca2+, and Li+/Mg2+ reached impressive values of 4.37, 3.75, 3.24, and 2.11, respectively, making the Lop Nor a candidate electrode for lithium extraction from low-grade raw brines.

Cobalt-catalyzed reversible deposition/dissolution of MnO2 for enhancing the long-cycle stability of aqueous Zn-Mn batteries

Changpeng Xian,Ruilin He,Qianwei Chen,Qiulin Li,Yandong Ma,Shu-juan Bao,Wei Sun,Hao Chen,Maowen Xu

Aqueous rechargeable zinc-manganese batteries (AZMBs) are strong candidates for the next generation of energy storage technologies. However, poor cycling stability has greatly limited the commercialization process of AZMBs. The irreversible dissolution and low utilization of manganese-based cathodes impact cycling stability. Therefore, this work proposes a cathode for electrolytic zinc-manganese battery, where cobalt and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon with catalytic and adsorptive properties is grown on carbon nanotube films (CoNC-CFs). Through a synergistic approach of ion adsorption and catalytic conversion, it significantly enhances the reversible conversion efficiency of Mn 2+ /MnO 2 , leading to long-term cycling stability for AZMBs. This strategy utilizes the catalytic effect of cobalt to promote the uniform deposition of Mn 2+ during the charging process and ensures the efficient dissolution of the deposited material during discharge, thus achieving over 1300 reversible cycles at 1 mA cm −2 in a near-neutral sulfate electrolyte. This method offers new perspectives for the further development and application of AZMBs.

Facile synthesis of coal tar residue based porous carbon/MnO2 composite for eminent thallium(I) removal from wastewater

Gao Feiyue,Zhou Chuncai,Cao Yachuan,Yang Ke,Li Zhiguo,Li Xin,Liu Guijian

Thallium (Tl) is a typical hypertoxic heavy metal, its accumulation in the water environment can have serious impacts on ecosystems and human health. In this study, a composite material (PC@MnO 2 ) was designed for removing Tl(I) by grafting MnO 2 onto coal tar residue-based porous carbon (PC) via hydrothermal impregnation. δ-MnO 2 with nano flower-like structure was verified to be evenly distributed on PC surface through material characterizations. The adsorption performance was markedly elevated after loading MnO 2 on PC, and the optimal adsorbent (PC@MnO 2 -75) was prepared by hydrothermal process from KMnO 4 (75 mg) using PC (100 mg) as a reducing agent. The adsorption of Tl(I) onto PC@MnO 2 -75 has achieved equilibrium in 90 min, slightly affected by solution pH (4−12), and exhibited an outstanding adsorptive selectivity in the presence of high concentrations of K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl - , CO 3 2- , humic acid, and fulvic acid. The pseudo second order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models were preferably described as the adsorptive characteristics. And the Tl(I) removal was a spontaneous exothermic adsorptive process. Density functional theory (DFT) results manifested that Mn doping enhanced electron transfer rate during adsorption. The highly efficient removal of Tl(I) on PC@MnO 2 -75 was achieved via electrostatic interaction, complexation, and oxidation-adsorption. The porous carbon derived from coal tar residue was engineered into PC@MnO 2 composites for efficient Tl(I) removal, which was in line with the environmental protection concept of sustainable development and green production.

Reasonable design of high-capacity MnO2/MXene/CF flexible cathodes for quasi-solid-state aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Xinyu Pang,Qifan Liu,Maokun Li,Zhanhui Fan,Chao Yang,Jianhui Qiu,Minhua He,Limin Zang

Manganese-based aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered growing interest in the area of adaptable and wearable devices because of their properties of simple manufacturing, superior safety, and ecological compatibility. Nevertheless, the actual implementation of Mn-based cathodes has faced challenges due to their inadequate conductivity and poor cycling performance. In this study, a chemical synthesis approach was employed to directly grow MnO 2 on the surface and within the interlayer spaces of MXene. Subsequently, the composite was coated onto carbon felt (CF) using the impregnation method to fabricate binder-free MnO 2 /MXene/CF cathodes for AZIBs. The excellent conductivity and structural stability of MXene effectively enhance ion/electron transport kinetics and mitigate irreversible volume changes of MnO 2 during charge and discharge processes. CF with excellent electrical conductivity and flexibility serves as an ideal current collector and substrate material for loading active materials. Moreover, its distinctive three-dimensional porous structure facilitates optimal interaction between the electrode material and the electrolyte. Consequently, the flexible quasi-solid-state AZIB, consisting of the optimized MnO 2 /MXene/CF cathode and zinc foil anode, exhibits high charge storage performance (a specific capacity of 429.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and an excellent energy density of 343.2 Wh kg −1 at 79.9 W kg −1 ). Density functional theory analysis reveals that the incorporation of MXene enhances electron adsorption on MnO 2 and significantly alters the density of states of MnO 2 , thus markedly improving its conductivity. These encouraging findings suggest that manganese-based materials hold great potential for application as cathodes in flexible quasi-solid-state AZIBs.

Ag-modulated mesoporous δ-MnO2 cathodes mitigate pseudo-capacitance and enhance specific capacity of aqueous zinc ion batteries

Boyou Hu,Haiyang Li,Menglei Wang,Zhiqiang Rao,Liqing Hao,Xuan Yu,Meng Zhang

The development of high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is promising for energy storage applications, yet challenges persist due to excessive pseudo-capacitance, structural instability and low conductivity of cathode materials. In this study, an Ag-doped mesoporous δ-MnO 2 nanocomposite (Ag–MnO 2 ) was rationally designed as a high-specific-capacity cathode material for AZIBs. Intercalated Ag + stabilize the layered δ-MnO 2 framework and expand ion diffusion channels, while surface-anchored Ag nanoparticles enhance electrical conductivity, optimize pseudo-capacitance and enhance reaction kinetics of δ-MnO 2 . Electrochemical tests reveal that Ag–MnO 2 delivers an amazing specific capacity of 491.7 mAh g −1 , a high power density of 133.1 W kg −1 and a superb energy density of 660.0 Wh kg −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , significantly outperforming pristine δ-MnO 2 , an approximate power density of 135.6 W kg −1 and a poor energy density of 457.1 Wh kg −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . Furthermore, Ag–MnO 2 exhibits exceptional cycling stability, retaining 95.6 % capacity after 800 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . Ex-situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses elucidate the energy storage mechanism of Ag–MnO 2 in AZIBs. A flexible pouch cell fabricated with Ag–MnO 2 demonstrates stable operation under bending conditions, which holds enormous potential in flexible battery applications, achieving high electrochemical performance of 470.3 mAh g −1 , 112.2 W kg −1 and 610.7 Wh kg −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . This work provides a scalable strategy for designing high-performance AZIBs cathodes and offers insights into material regulation for overcoming energy storage limitations, applicable to broader energy storage systems.

Synthesis of ZIF-8 Coated MnO2 Functionalized Antibacterial Peptide Nanoparticles and Its Antibacterial and Wound-Healing Promotion Studies

Xiao Mengzhu,Wu Yujia,Li Wanzhen,Wang Jun,Zhang Weiwei,Gui Lin,Ge Fei

Antibiotics, a milestone invention in modern medicine, have significantly improved human quality of life and serve as a primary weapon against bacterial infections. However, antibiotic abuse has led to the emergence and worsening of bacterial resistance, now a major global public health challenge. Therefore, the efficient use of nanoscale antimicrobial peptides (APs) as therapeutic and diagnostic agents offers a novel strategy to replace conventional antibiotics. In this study, we innovatively combined AP with manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to develop a novel composite: ZIF-8-encapsulated and AP-loaded MnO 2 (AP-MnO 2 @ZIF-8). This composite exhibited superior properties, including enhanced biocompatibility, excellent aqueous stability, and increased antibacterial activity. Both in vitro and in vivo AP-MnO 2 @ZIF-8 demonstrated potent efficacy against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Its minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were 20 μg/ml for E. coli and 39 μg/ml for S. aureus . Furthermore, colony-forming unit (CFU) assays showed that 150-μg/ml AP-MnO 2 @ZIF-8 reduced bacterial survival below 5%, indicating effective growth inhibition. Crucially, it significantly suppressed bacterial activity in S. aureus -infected mouse wound models. Compared to free AP or MnO 2 alone, AP-MnO 2 @ZIF-8 showed significantly enhanced water solubility, bioavailability, and antibacterial activity. This work provides a foundation for developing AP-based antimicrobial strategies and offers a novel nanomaterial approach to combat the increasingly severe antibiotic resistance crisis. Graphical

Cisplatin-loaded mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles capped with MnO2 and coated with platelet membrane provide synergistic anti-tumor therapy

Yanyan Zhang,Gareth R. Williams,Tong Wang,Yilu Zheng,Jianxiang Xu,Van Cuong Nguyen,Lili Yao,Haijun Wang,Li-Min Zhu

A multifunctional nanoplatform was constructed in this work, with the goal of ameliorating the challenges faced with traditional cancer chemotherapy. Cisplatin (CP) was loaded into mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA) nanoparticles (NPs) with a drug loading of 15.8 ± 0.1 %, and MnO 2 used as pore sealing agent. Finally, the NPs were wrapped with platelet membrane (PLTM). P-selectin on the PLTM can bind to CD44, which is highly expressed on the tumor cell membrane, so as to improve the targeting performance of the NPs. In addition, the CD47 on the PLTM can prevent the NPs from being phagocytosed by macrophages, which is conducive to immune escape. The final PLTM-CP@mPDA/MnO 2 NPs were found to have a particle size of approximately 198 nm. MnO 2 is degraded into Mn 2+ in the tumor microenvironment, leading to CP release from the pores in the mPDA. CP both acts as a chemotherapy agent and can also increase the concentration of H 2 O 2 in cells. Mn 2+ can catalyze the conversion of H 2 O 2 to OH, resulting in oxidative damage and chemodynamic therapy. In addition, Mn 2+ can be used as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to explore the therapeutic effect of the NPs. When the concentration of CP is 30 μg/mL, the NPs cause approximately 50 % cell death. It was found that the PLTM-CP@mPDA/MnO 2 NPs are targeted to cancerous cells, and in the tumor site cause extensive apoptosis. Tumor growth is thereby repressed. No negative off-target side effects were noted. MRI could be used to confirm the presence of the NPs in the tumor site. Overall, the nano-platform developed here provides cooperative chemotherapy and chemodynamic therapy, and can potentially be used for effective cancer treatment which could be monitored by MRI.

Improved Performances of Zn//MnO2 Batteries with an Electrolyte Containing Co-Additives of Polyethylene Glycol and Lignin Derivatives

Muzammil Hussain Memon,Md. Asraful Alam,Qiyuan Xie,Abdul Rahman Abbasi,Lele Wang,Jingliang Xu,Wenlong Xiong

Multi-component electrolyte additives may significantly contribute to improving the performance of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, we propose a mixed electrolyte system employing polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) and quaternized kraft lignin (QKL) as co-additives in Zn//MnO2batteries. Reduced corrosion and the suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction on the zinc electrode were achieved when 0.5 wt.% of PEG200 and 0.2 wt.% of QKL were added to the reference aqueous electrolyte. This optimized electrolyte, 0.5% PEG200 + 0.2% QKL, was conducive to improving Zn reversibility in Zn//Zn symmetric batteries and resulted in higher cycling stability, with a coulombic efficiency of 98.01% under 1 mA cm−2and 1 mAh cm−2for Zn//Cu cells. Furthermore, Zn//MnO2full batteries with 0.5% PEG200 + 0.2% QKL presented good overall electrochemical performance and exhibited a decent discharge capacity of around 85 mAh g−1after 2000 cycles at 1.5 A g−1. As confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, a dominant (002) oriental dendrite-free Zn deposition was achieved on the zinc anode of the battery using 0.5% PEG200 + 0.2% QKL, and the byproducts were also reduced significantly. This study has contributed to the development of electrolyte co-additives for zinc-ion batteries.

Natural polysaccharide-dominated synthesis of MnO2 nanoparticles as textile coating for efficiently removing indoor bacteria and air pollutants

Xueming Bao,Yun Yuan,Zirong Li,Yuanyuan Yu,Li Cui,Man Zhou,Qiang Wang,Ping Wang

Nowadays, new demands for improving living standards have posed novel challenges to traditional home textiles, and the development of   nano-engineered functional textiles for improving indoor environmental quality has garnered considerable interest. However, the potential toxicity and poor fastness of nanoparticles have significantly impeded their applications in textiles. Herein, a facile strategy for synthesizing manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) was presented through a hydrothermal method by using natural polysaccharides such as inulin, chitosan oligosaccharide, and alginate as reductants. The ‘one-stone-three-birds’ behaviors of natural polysaccharides were thoroughly explored, including reducing permanganate into MnO 2 , directing the assembly of nanoparticles, and ensuring their stability in aqueous solutions. Notably, inulin can efficiently regulate the synthesis of MnO 2 particles, and as-prepared MnO 2 exhibited distinct flower-like morphologies with higher crystallinity, rich surface adsorbed oxygen species, and encouraging ability of formaldehyde (HCHO) removal and antibacterial activity. Furthermore, without supplemental binder or catalyst, the multifunctional textile of C-MnO 2 was readily fabricated by simply immersing cotton fabric into MnO 2-Inu solution, and the obtained textile demonstrated satisfactory antibacterial performance under both dark and light irradiation conditions. Moreover, the obtained HCHO removal and UV-blocking properties were also encouraging. This inulin-dominated reduction and template synthesis of MnO 2 particles was first reported, and the presented technique of regulating particle synthesis and textile decoration paves the way for the application fields in multifunctional and sustainable home textiles.

Cation/anion synergistic modulation in birnessite-type MnO2 to boost dual-ion storage in a wide temperature range

Yunhao Hu,Depeng Zhang,Zhengkun Liu,Hanwen He,Hongyang Wang,Chao Deng,Sen Zhang

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries with high theoretical capacity, low price and high safety are promising energy storage devices. However, their development is restricted by manganese oxide (MnO 2 ) cathodes, which have the drawbacks of inferior electron conduction, irreversible dissolution and limited stability. Herein, a synergistic cation/anion (Ca/N) co-doping strategy is introduced to modulate the electric structure of birnessite-type MnO 2 (CACO–δ-MnO 2 ) to enhance its electron/ion-migration capability, improve structural stability and promote electrochemical performance. Theoretical analysis reveals that the synergistic effects of Ca/N co-doping considerably reduces the bandgap, decreases the adsorption energy and lowers the ion-diffusion energy barrier for CACO–δ-MnO 2 , thereby increasing its conductivity and ion-diffusion capability. Ex situ and in situ analyses reveal that the dual ions of the Zn 2+ and H + insertion mechanism and the superior structural stability of CACO–δ-MnO 2 during charging/discharging processes. Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results confirm its fast kinetics, low charge-transfer resistance and good stability. Moreover, electrochemical tests demonstrate its superior stability in high-rate and long-term cycling, which delivers a high capacity of 213.5 mAh g −1 following 2000 cycles at a high current density of 4 A g −1 . Integrated with the CACO–δ-MnO 2 cathode, the flexible Zn–MnO 2 battery demonstrates high flexibility and reliability in a wide temperature range (−20 °C–25 °C). Moreover, a long lifespan of 1000 cycles and a high capacity retention of 89.2 % are obtained for the flexible Zn–MnO 2 battery even at a low temperature of −20 °C. Therefore, this study not only introduces a novel Ca/N synergistic modulation strategy for high-performance δ-MnO 2 cathode but also propels the development of advanced Zn-ion batteries for various electronic items.

Simultaneous Down-Regulation of Intracellular hTERT and GPX4 mRNA Using MnO2-Nanosheet Probes to Induce Cancer Cell Death

Yixin Miao,Tao Zhou,Qinghong Ji,Min Hong

Cancer remains a leading global cause of death, with conventional treatments often limited by toxicity and recurrence. Recent advances in gene therapy and nanodrug delivery offer new avenues for precision oncology. Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) are overexpressed in many cancers and linked to apoptosis and ferroptosis, respectively. Here, we developed a manganese dioxide nanosheet (MnO2-NS) probe co-loaded with antisense oligonucleotides targeting hTERT and GPX4 mRNA to synergistically down-regulate both genes and induce dual cell death pathways. The probe, assembled via adsorption of fluorescently labeled antisense strands, showed controllable release in the presence of glutathione (GSH). Cellular uptake and antisense release were confirmed in multiple cancer cell lines. The MnO2-NS probe significantly suppressed cell proliferation, outperforming single-target or carrier-only controls. Molecular analyses confirmed reduced hTERT and GPX4 expression, along with GSH depletion, ROS accumulation, and elevated lipid peroxidation—collectively promoting enhanced cancer cell death. In summary, this MnO2-NS-based co-delivery system enables synergistic gene silencing and GSH depletion, enhancing antitumor efficacy and providing a promising strategy for multifunctional nanotherapy.
