Tin dioxide (SnO 2 )-based materials with renowned conversion-alloying hybrid mechanism represent great potential as anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, their commercial applications are still plagued by fast capacity decay and insufficient rate capability originated from sluggish reaction kinetics and irreversible conversion reaction. Herein, heterogeneous SnO 2 /SnS 2 quantum dots are carefully constructed on graphene oxide (SnO 2 /SnS 2 QDs@GO) via one-step hydrothermal synthesis leveraging well-matched bandgaps of SnO 2 and SnS 2 , in which GO not only provides enough negative charges to restrict the nucleation of QDs, but also is employed as robust conductive network to reinforce the structural stability of the electrode. Experimental and first-principles calculation results confirm that the constructed heterointerface promotes electronic conductivity and accelerates interfacial charge transfer kinetics while simultaneously lowering Li 2 O decomposition energy barrier to realize high reaction reversibility, ultimately favoring excellent rate capability and cyclability. Moreover, the built-in electric field induced by SnO 2 /SnS 2 heterojunction greatly boosts electronic/ionic transport kinetics. Endowed with the elaborate structure combining intrinsic and extrinsic advantages, the cell assembled with SnO 2 /SnS 2 QDs@GO electrode presents high reversible capacity of 1216.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and desirable long-cycle stability over 1500 cycles at 5.0 A g −1 . Therefore, this work may provide new insights into engineering semiconductor-based heterojunction anode for advanced LIBs.

Quantum-sized SnO2 nanoparticles have emerged as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) due to their high chemical stability, wide bandgap, and high electron mobility. However, their excessive electron mobility often leads to charge transport imbalance, thereby limiting the device performance. Herein, we report a p-type doping strategy using Mg2+ ions to modulate the electron transport capability of SnO2 nanocrystals. By varying Mg-doping concentration, we achieve a wide-range tuning of electron mobility and conductivity over nearly 3 orders of magnitude. This suppression of electron transport enables the balanced charge injection in inverted QLEDs. As a result, red-emitting devices incorporating 2.0% Mg-doped SnO2 ETLs exhibit an average external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 19.35% and a peak EQE of 22.04%. This work demonstrates Mg-doped SnO2 nanoparticles as a superior alternative to ZnO nanoparticles for highly efficient and stable QLEDs.

In situ KCl doping regulates SnO 2 via CBD. • Synergistic Cl − passivation reduces defects in SnO 2 . • SnO 2 modification improves perovskite crystallization. • Carbon-based devices deliver high efficiency and low hysteresis. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted significant attention due to their high power conversion efficiency and low-cost fabrication. However, interfacial defects and inefficient charge transport at the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite interface remain critical challenges limiting device performance and stability. In this work, a KCl-modified SnO 2 ETL is developed via a chemical bath deposition (CBD) strategy to enhance interfacial properties and charge transport dynamics. The incorporation of KCl effectively passivates oxygen vacancies and undercoordinated Sn 4+ defects in SnO 2 , leading to improved film crystallinity and reduced defect density. As a result, charge extraction is facilitated and non-radiative recombination is suppressed. The optimized device achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.13%, representing a 7.22% enhancement compared to the pristine device. Furthermore, the modified devices exhibit reduced hysteresis, improved moisture resistance, and enhanced long-term stability, retaining 74.2% of the initial efficiency after 1200 h under ambient conditions. Notably, the CBD-based KCl modification offers both superior performance and simplified fabrication compared to conventional spin-coating methods, highlighting its potential for scalable and stable PSCs applications. The uncontrollable growth of lithium (Li) dendrites severely hampers the commercialization of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, a highly integrated PP/SnO 2 /PP sandwich-structured separator was designed and fabricated. Utilizing an innovative solvent-induced bonding and hot-pressing process, lithiophilic SnO 2 nanoparticles were precisely anchored within a dual-layer polypropylene framework. Morphological and chemical characterizations (SEM, XPS, and EDS) confirmed the uniform distribution and intimate interfacial contact of the modification layer. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the sandwich separator enables exceptionally high Coulombic efficiency at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 and imparts superior cycling stability to LFP||Li cells. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the SnO 2 interlayer functions not merely as a physical barrier but, more importantly, as a ‘‘electrochemical trap.’’ Upon contact with the interlayer, Li dendrites trigger an in situ ‘‘micro-cell reaction,’’ which proactively eliminates dendrite tips via electrochemical ablation. This strategic shift from ‘‘passive blocking’’ to ‘‘proactive elimination’’ offers a novel perspective for designing high-safety lithium metal batteries. Graphical abstract Schematic diagram of the mechanism for an electrochemical trapping device used to actively eliminate lithium dendrites. The escalating emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) resulting from rapid industrialization pose a severe threat to both ecological balance and public health, rendering the development of high-performance NO 2 sensors imperative for precise environmental monitoring. However, conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors based on pristine materials suffer from intrinsic limitations, including low sensitivity, poor humidity tolerance, and high operating temperatures. Single-mode modification strategies often fail to simultaneously mitigate these drawbacks. Herein, we propose a synergistic modification strategy combining rare-earth doping with heterojunction engineering. Ce-doped SnO 2 /ZnO nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Among the fabricated devices, the S 5 CZ 5 sensor (1:1 mass ratio) exhibited superior performance, delivering a robust response of 55.3 to 100 ppm NO 2 at 180 °C, accompanied by rapid response/recovery kinetics (21 s/29 s) and a low theoretical detection limit of 843 ppb. Notably, the incorporation of Ce effectively modulated surface wettability, endowing the sensor with exceptional moisture resistance and long-term stability. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the atomic-scale mechanism: the ternary SnO 2 /Ce-ZnO system yields an exceptionally high NO 2 adsorption energy (−2.55 eV) and a massive interfacial charge transfer (0.49 e), while critically suppressing H 2 O interactions (adsorption energy of −0.40 eV, restricted charge transfer of 0.13 e), as corroborated by charge density difference analyses. Coupled with an optimized density of states near the Fermi level, this work achieves a multidimensional enhancement of sensing performance, offering novel insights for trace gas detection in complex environments.

A self-supporting polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyaniline (PANI)/SnO 2 nanofiber membrane was fabricated. • The self-supporting structure endows the sensor with high mechanical reliability. • The p–n heterojunction constructed between PANI and SnO 2 enhances NH 3 adsorption and interfacial charge transfer. • Surface hydroxylation and the hydrogen-bond network promote the increase in the NH 3 response under high-humidity conditions. Flexible room-temperature ammonia (NH 3 ) sensors hold considerable promise for wearable environmental monitoring and industrial safety, yet their practical deployment remains constrained by insufficient sensing response, inadequate mechanical durability, and pronounced humidity interference. Herein, a flexible polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyaniline (PANI)/SnO 2 heterojunction sensor was fabricated. The sensor exhibited a response of 5.2 toward 100 ppm NH 3 at room temperature, approximately 2.3 times that of the pure PANI sensor, with response/recovery times of 126/296 s. Meanwhile, the sensor demonstrated excellent flexibility, with a bending-induced response variation of less than 5% and retained 95% of its initial response after 1000 folding cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that, compared with pristine PANI, PANI/SnO 2 showed stronger NH 3 adsorption and greater charge transfer. Experimentally, humidity was found to exert a two-stage regulatory effect on the NH 3 sensing performance of PANI and PANI/SnO 2 sensors. Combined with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the results indicate that humidity plays a dual role in the sensing process: at low humidity, competitive adsorption dominates and leads to a decreased response, whereas at high humidity, hydrogen-bond-assisted interfacial regulation promotes response recovery. This work provides an effective strategy for developing flexible PANI-based NH 3 sensors and offers new insights into humidity-dependent sensing mechanisms. In this paper, hierarchical Ag-decorated SnO 2 microspheres were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The resulting composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, BET, and FTIR analysis. The catalytic performances of the samples were evaluated with the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by potassium borohydride (KBH 4 ) as a model reaction. Time-dependent experiments indicated that the hierarchical microspheres assembled from SnO 2 and Ag nanoparticles can be formed when the react time is less than 10 h. With the increase of hydrothermal time, SnO 2 nanoparticles will self-assemble into SnO 2 nanosheets and Ag nanoparticles decorated SnO 2 nanosheets were obtained. When evaluated as catalyst, the obtained Ag-decorated SnO 2 microsphere prepared for 36 h exhibited excellent catalytic performance with normalized rate constant ( κ
nor ) of 6.20 min −1 g −1 L, which is much better than that of some previous reported catalysts. Moreover, this Ag-decorated SnO 2 microsphere demonstrates good reusability after the first five cycles. In addition, we speculate the formation mechanism of the hierarchical Ag-decorated SnO 2 microsphere and discussed the possible origin of the excellent catalytic activity.

Tin dioxide (SnO2) has emerged as a highly promising candidate for electron transport layers in perovskite solar cells. However, defects in the SnO2 film and at the interface between SnO2 and perovskite often cause serious nonradiative recombination, resulting in the deterioration of the performance of perovskite solar cells. Herein, a synergistic passivation strategy is employed through the introduction of amphiphilic fluorosurfactants (FS-31) into the SnO2 precursor solution, enabling the passivation of defects present both in the SnO2 film and at the interface between SnO2 and perovskite. Moreover, FS-31 is capable of modulating the energy level of the SnO2 film and enhancing the crystalline quality of the wide-band-gap perovskite, thereby minimizing residual lead iodide. Thanks to the positive effects of FS-31, the n–i–p type wide-band-gap perovskite (1.68 eV) solar cells achieve a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.92%, an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.24 V, and a minimal VOC deficit of 0.44 V. Furthermore, this simple strategy provides strong support for the preparation of high-efficiency n–i–p perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells.

For SnO2 that was used as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs), the theoretical capacity is rarely high. However, due to the excessively huge volume expansion of SnO2 in the electrode reaction, the battery capacity decreases sharply, thus impeding its practical application. Here, potassium stannate and glucose were dissolved in the hydrothermal phase and dispersed evenly through a one-step hydrothermal method and then calcined and carbonized at a high temperature in an argon atmosphere to obtain a SnO2@C composite. To obtain an electrode with better performance, SnO2@C/MCB (micrometer carbon ball) composites were synthesized by a similar method. SnO2@C/MCB exhibited a high initial reversible capacity, splendid rate property, and cycling performance in KIBs (the initial capacity remains at 57.2% after 450 cycles). Compared with the SnO2@C material, the SnO2@C/MCB electrode has a higher electrical conductivity, smaller volume change, and better potassium storage capacity.

Chlorine (Cl 2 ), a toxic and hazardous gas with a pungent odor, has already posed threat to air quality and human health. Therefore, developing chlorine sensors with high response and low power consumption is crucial. In this work, raspberry-like SnO 2 decorated uniformly with SnS nanoparticles was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method followed by an in-situ sulfurization process, which can be used for highly selective and sensitive detection of Cl 2 at 50 °C. The SnS/SnO 2 sensor exhibits ultrahigh response (R g /R a = 1136) toward 10 ppm Cl 2 at optimal working temperature of 50 °C, achieving low detection limit down to 0.05 pp m (S = 1.52), which is 2.5 times higher than that of pure SnO 2 sensor. Its superior sensing performance can be attributed to the formation of the p-n heterostructure, which accelerates electron transfer within the material. More importantly, the as-prepared SnS/SnO 2 sensor still exhibits effective and stable detection performance toward residual chlorine in daily life, significantly extending its practical applicability and providing valuable reference for developing high-performance near room-temperature gas sensors.

Achieving highly selective, highly responsive detection of formaldehyde gas at ppb level at room temperature is highly challenging for air monitoring and life health observation. Therefore, in this paper, low-cost, easy-to-fabricate, highly responsive as well as highly selective Zn 2 SnO 4 /SnO 2 (ZTO/SnO 2 ) metal-oxide semiconductor gas sensors have been successfully prepared by using one-pot hydrothermal method . The results showed that the synergistic effect of the n-n heterojunction formed between ZTO/SnO 2 prepared by this method led to a substantial increase in the sensitivity to the target gases, and ZTO/SnO 2 -3 a higher response (291) to 100 ppm formaldehyde compared to the response values of pure samples of Zn 2 SnO 4 (20.4) and pure SnO 2 (6.99) at room temperature. In addition, the response value for formaldehyde reached about 16.5–295 times higher than that for other common hazardous gases (100 ppm) in our lives. The ZTO/SnO 2 -3 sample with 1 mol/L NaOH was homogeneous and small, exposing as much surface as possible, and the theoretical minimum detection limit was calculated to be 50 ppb. Therefore, the large specific surface area and active adsorption/interaction sites are favorable for gas sensing. This work provides an excellent way to prepare gas-sensitive characteristic sensors using NaOH to improve the surface structure.

Formaldehyde sensors represent an effective technology for real-time, online monitoring of formaldehyde concentrations. The selectivity of gas-sensitive materials for formaldehyde is a fundamental determinant of sensor performance and is crucial for the development of formaldehyde sensing technology. In this work, Sn-doped Zn-MOFs were employed to fabricate SnO 2 /ZnO micro-nano materials, and their selective response behaviors to formaldehyde were systematically explored. The results demonstrate that 5 % SnO 2 /ZnO, prepared with 5 % Sn doping, exhibits exceptional selectivity for formaldehyde. Under testing conditions of 170 °C and relative humidity below 60 %, the 5 % SnO 2 /ZnO sensor achieved a selectivity coefficient of 0.87 toward 50 ppm formaldehyde, with a response value of 72.8, response and recovery times of 81/30 s, a linear regression coefficient of 0.9997, and a minimum detection limit of 0.047 ppm. Moreover, the 5 % SnO 2 /ZnO sensor demonstrates excellent selectivity, anti-interference capability, and stability for formaldehyde detection. The enhanced formaldehyde selectivity is attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant pore structure, abundant oxygen vacancies, and n–n heterojunctions present in the 5 % SnO 2 /ZnO composite.
