V–Ti magnetite tailings (VTMTs) contain various heavy metals , such as Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni. The groundwater pollution caused by the tailing metal release has become a local environmental concern. Although studies have demonstrated the influence of alternate flooding and drying cycles (FDCs) on metal form and mobility in minerals, little was known about whether FDCs affect the metal release of VTMTs and the transformation of released metals. This study investigated the metal release kinetics of VTMTs and the metal transformation under FDCs in the absence and presence of acid rain (sulfuric and nitric acids) and bio-secreted organic acids (acetic, oxalic, and citric acids). The results showed that FDCs promoted metal release whether or not acids were present. The maximum released concentrations of V, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni were as high as 78.63 mg L −1 ,1.47 mg L −1 , 67.96 μg L −1 , 1.34 mg L −1 , and 0.80 mg L −1 , respectively, under FDCs and citric acids . FDCs enhanced the tailing metal release by increasing the metal labile fraction proportion. However, the concentrations of released Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni all gradually decreased due to their (co-)precipitation. These precipitates conversely inhibited the subsequent mineral dissolution by covering the tailing surface. FDCs also enhanced the tailings’ porosities by 2.94%–9.94%. The mineral dissolution, expansion and shrinkage, and changes in tension destroyed the tailing microstructure during FDCs. This study demonstrated the low metal pollution risk of VTMTs under FDCs, either in acid rain or bio-secreted organic acids. However, the increase in tailing porosity should be seriously considered as it would affect the tailing pond safety.

Photocathodic protection is a promotion strategy for the corrosion protection of metallic materials, and the selection of photocathodic materials is a critical factor in improving the performance of photocathodic protection of metallic materials. Herein, a Ti-P-V-O composite semiconductor photoelectrode with an adjustable porous structure was prepared by the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method using titanium alloy (TC 4 ) as the matrix and ammonium metavanadate (NH 4 VO 3 ) as the additive. The photogenerated open circuit potential, instantaneous photocurrent density response value, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Tafel curve of as-prepared Ti-P-V-O photo-electrodes were measured after coupling with 304SS to clarify the cathodic protection effect for 304 stainless steel (304SS). It is found that the as-prepared Ti-P-V-O coating photoelectrode has a more negative open circuit potential, a more significant photocurrent density response, more effective interface carrier transport ability, lower resistance, lower compounding efficiency of photogenerated electron/hole pairs, and more negative conduction band level, as compared with that of TiO 2 coatings. Moreover, the optimized Ti-P-V-O photoelectrode (Ti-P-V-O&300 V) exhibited the maximum negative shift of the corrosion potential (410 mV vs. SCE) for coupling with 304 stainless steel. This work presents a new strategy for constructing an efficient coating photo-electrode for photocathodic protection of metallic materials.

Microplastics, as pervasive pollutants, pose severe threats to ecosystems and human health, necessitating efficient and sustainable degradation strategies. Nanozymes, mimicking natural enzymes, provide an innovative strategy for eliminating water contaminants, with light activation significantly boosting their catalytic efficiency through a simple, remotely adjustable process. However, the cooperative mechanism of the nanozyme-photocatalytic system is still poorly elucidated, highlighting the need for comprehensive investigations into its microplastic degradation efficacy and underlying mechanisms. Herein, we developed nitrogen-doped titanate nanotubes (NTNTs) with Ti-N coordination, achieving exceptional photo-enzyme synergistic catalysis for highly efficient microplastic decomposition. Nitrogen doping into TNTs broadens their light absorption spectrum, improves charge separation efficiency, and enhances photocatalytic activity. The Ti-N interaction induces electronic structure modifications that impart peroxidase-like (POD-like) property to NTNTs. First-principles calculations reveal that NTNTs exhibit enhanced POD-like activity by enabling exothermic adsorption of -O/-OH intermediates (up to −6.6 eV for −2OH) and reducing the energy barrier for hydroxyl (•OH) radical generation compared to endothermic TNTs, thereby accelerating H 2 O 2 activation kinetics. Furthermore, H 2 O 2 activation promotes Ti(III)/Ti(IV) cycling, significantly boosting •OH generation while creating an autocatalytic system that sustains reactive oxygen species production, thereby reinforcing the photo-enzyme synergistic mechanism. NTNTs-2 demonstrates superior photo-enzyme synergistic degradation of PE (15.19 % mass loss in 8 h), outperforming individual photocatalytic (2.49 %) and enzymatic (0.04 %) processes, with broader pH adaptability (4.7–12.3) and universal effectiveness across PP/PS/PVC microplastics, while SEM confirms progressive surface fragmentation enhancing catalytic accessibility. This study achieves a breakthrough in multifunctional catalyst design by synergizing photocatalytic and nanozyme mechanisms for environmental remediation.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction harnesses sunlight to convert CO 2 into fuels (e.g., CO, CH 4 ) to address global warming and energy shortages, but faces challenges like high cost and low efficiency. In this work, NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/diatomite composites were prepared by one-step solvothermal method using diatomite as a support. Characterization indicated that NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) units were grown in-situ on diatomite through surface-mediated interactions with Si-O-Ti bonds. This process significantly reduced the agglomeration of NH 2 -MIL-125 particles. Among the resulting composites, NH 2 -MIL-125/DE-60 % had the best photocatalytic activity with a CO production rate of 7.36 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 1.56 times higher than NH 2 -MIL-125. In four cycles, the yield remained above 6.88 μmol g −1 h −1 . Meanwhile, electrochemical characterization revealed that composite enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and reduces carrier migration resistance. The excellent performance of NH 2 -MIL-125/diatomite composites could be attributed to the synergistic effects of its better dispersion and the Si-O-Ti interface formation, which improve light absorption, increase the number of active sites and facilitate charge separation. Meanwhile, the specific mechanism of CO 2 reduction by NH 2 -MIL-125/diatomite composites and its reduction pathway were also revealed. In conclusion, this study successfully reduced the agglomeration effect of MOFs, and provided implications for realizing in-situ growth of MOFs on mineral surfaces.

The ecological impact linked to hydraulic fracturing, namely with the usage of water and the energy-intensive disposal of flowback fluids, has led to a thorough evaluation of alternative treatment approaches that are more environmentally friendly. The objective of this work was to create coralline-like anatase TiO2/α-Ni(OH)2particles using a hydrothermal approach. The purpose was to improve the efficiency of photocatalysis by increasing the number of oxygen vacancies. An ozone-assisted photocatalytic reaction was used to increase the composite photocatalyst’s degrading efficiency for fracturing flowback fluid. The fracturing flowback fluid’s chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation efficiency was greatly increased following the introduction of the synergistic treatment system consisting of sedimentation, membrane separation, and ozone photocatalysis. This improvement led to a reduction of 98.42% during a processing time of 90 min, using a Ti/Ni mass ratio of 1:1. This collaborative method partially replaced traditional methods of evaporation concentration and electrochemical degradation, resulting in a 24.18% enhancement compared to individual material catalyst systems. These findings provide crucial insights for improving and optimizing external treatment techniques in shale gas fracturing operations.

The potential for persistent and controllable delivery of osteoprotegerin (OPG) under osteoporotic conditions has become an essential property of bone implants to promote osseointegration and osteogenesis. Herein, a microenvironment-responsive surface coating for titanium (Ti) implants by immobilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) loaded with OPG onto alkali heat-treated Ti surfaces via gelatin (Gel) (AHT-MOF@OPG-GEL) was successfully fabricated. In weakly acidic environment, MOF@OPG can achieve responsive degradation and slow release of zinc ions (Zn2+) and OPG, which not only inhibits osteoclast activity and osteoclastic biomarker expressions, but also potentiates osteoblast proliferation and differentiation in vitro. Moreover, alkali heat treatment was favorable for the hydrophilicity and cell adhesion of the Ti surface. In addition, in vivo experiments in the osteoporotic bone defect model confirmed that the MOF-based functional coating could promote the generation of new bone around the implant, thereby enhancing the bonding strength between the implant and the surrounding bone tissue, and effectively facilitating the osseointegration of the implant with the bone tissue. In conclusion, this study is expected to provide new ideas for improving the osseointegration of implants in osteoporotic conditions.

NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (NM) is a prototypical metal–organic framework (MOF) photocatalyst with visible-light responsiveness. However, its practical application in CO 2 reduction is significantly limited by fast charge carrier recombination and poor product selectivity. Constructing heterojunctions with appropriately matched semiconductors offers an effective strategy to overcome these limitations, where coupling material selection and precise interfacial engineering are key. ZnO, a stable n-type wide-bandgap semiconductor, not only possesses excellent electron mobility but also exhibits suitable conduction band alignment with NM, enabling favorable interfacial charge transfer. Moreover, ZnO can form an interfacial Ti–O–Zn bonding bridge with NM, facilitating directional electron transport and suppressing charge recombination. In this work, we employed atomic layer deposition (ALD) to construct uniform ZnO shells on NM with sub-nanometer precision, thereby finely tuning the ZnO loading and interface structure. A series of ZnO@NH 2 -MIL-125 (ZnO@NM) composites are obtained by controlling the ZnO loading, with the optimal sample showing the highest activity, yielding 13.30 μmol h −1 g −1 of CO and 5.47 μmol h −1 g −1 of CH 4 . Notably, CH 4 selectivity is significantly improved from 16 % to 29 %, and further increases to 31 % under gas-solid conditions. In situ Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that ZnO not only promotes directional interfacial electron transfer but also facilitates the hydrogenation of *CO to *CHO, thus enhancing CH 4 selectivity. This study demonstrates an ALD-enabled interface engineering strategy to construct MOF-semiconductor heterojunctions, offering mechanistic insights and design principles for advancing efficient and selective photocatalytic systems for carbon dioxide reduction.

Background Pure titanium and titanium alloy implants have been widely utilized in dental implantology due to their excellent biocompatibility and favorable elastic modulus. However, the inherent bioinertness of titanium-based implant surfaces often results in suboptimal osseointegration with surrounding bone tissue. Consequently, surface modification is essential to enhance the osseointegrative capacity of titanium implants. Methods We fabricated hydroxyapatite-graphene oxide (HA-GO) coatings via electrochemical deposition and systematically compared four distinct protein loading methods. Ultimately, we developed a hydroxyapatite-graphene oxide/interleukin-4 (Ti@HA-GO@IL-4) coating on pure titanium substrates to investigate its physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Results The composite coating was successfully fabricated on pure titanium substrates, inducing significant surface modifications including the incorporation of bioactive functional groups, enhanced hydrophilicity, and altered surface morphology. Comparative characterization revealed that the composite coating exhibited superior hydrophilic properties, improved mechanical compatibility with bone tissue, stable Interleukin-4 (IL-4) adsorption and sustained-release behavior, as well as excellent biosafety confirmed by proliferation and adhesion assays using mouse embryo osteoblast precursor (MC3T3-E1) cells, when compared to unmodified titanium controls. Conclusions Ti@HA-GO@IL-4 represents a composite coating material with exceptional physicochemical properties and biological performance. This material demonstrates efficient IL-4 loading capacity and sustained release characteristics, thereby effectively promoting osteogenesis. These findings provide valuable insights for developing bioactive functional materials to enhance implant osseointegration.

A series of bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanorods and amine-functionalized Ti-based metal–organic framework heterojunctions [denoted by Bi2S3@NH2-MIL-125(Ti)] were constructed and explored as bifunctional photocatalysts for Cr(VI) reduction and rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light illumination. Compared with the individual NH2-MIL-125(Ti) and Bi2S3, the as-synthesized Bi2S3@NH2-MIL-125(Ti) photocatalyst exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity toward Cr(VI) and RhB owning to the synergetic effect between Bi2S3 and NH2-MIL-125(Ti). Moreover, the Bi2S3@NH2-MIL-125(Ti) heterojunctions showed increased Cr(VI) removal efficiency by adding RhB in the system. The photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the analysis of different scavenger for active species and electron spin resonance spectrometry. The introduction of Bi2S3 into NH2-MIL-125(Ti) can extend the light adsorption and improve the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers through the Bi2S3@NH2-MIL-125(Ti) heterojunction with unique band gap structure. The synthesized Bi2S3@NH2-MIL-125(Ti) photocatalyst also exhibited good reusability and stability.

MAX phase ceramics, as a family of ternary layered ceramics, have received a lot of attention in the past decade due to their potential as precursors for two-dimensional transition metal carbides. However, due to complex multi-component metallurgical reactions, multicomponent MAX phase ceramics have always faced difficulties in purification and homogenization. This paper identifies a new strategy for synthesizing multicomponent MAX phase ceramics that can eliminate these synthesis difficulties. This path utilizes low-temperature (below 1000°C) stable Ti 2 AlC and carbide powder as initial materials to simplify complex multi-component reactions into a one-step reaction, successfully achieving high purity and precise doping ratio. As an example, four novel doped MAX phase ceramics, Ti 2 MAlC 2 (M = Nb, Ta, W) and Ti 2 HEAlC 2 (HE = 1/7Ti, 1/7V, 1/7Zr, 1/7Nb, 1/7Hf, 1/7Ta, 1/7 W) were successfully synthesized using this method. This dynamic-based design, on one hand, simplifies the reaction mechanism to make purification easier, and on the other hand, the concentrated release of entropy during the reaction process promotes phase transition and related element homogenization.

Indirect hydrogen production routes presented extensive compatibilities for distributed solid oxide fuel cell systems . Catalyst activity directly determines hydrogen production and profoundly affects the power generation . In this work, Ce 1-x M x NiO 3-λ (M = Al, Ti and Ca) were synthesized for hydrogen production from propane partial oxidation (POx). From the results, it indicated that the choice of catalyst compositions could directly affect the microstructure during the preparation process. Also, different Ce 1-x M x NiO 3-λ catalysts displayed distinctive carbon tolerance performances due to the different active particle sizes and surface properties of the catalysts. In general, the synthesized Ce 1-x M x NiO 3-λ catalysts showed higher hydrogen production than a commercial nickel cerium catalyst. From the observation of a SOFC test system powered by injecting the generated H 2 from catalytic propane POx reaction, the obtained power density of CNO–Al displayed an increase of 22.6% compared to the commercial nickel cerium catalyst. It was quite impressive that the equivalent hydrogen (160 ml/min) produced over CNO–Al and the obtained power density (482.6 mW/cm 2 ) of SOFCs were competitive while CNO–Ca presented an excellent stability with a better carbon tolerance performance for the long-term tests. The achievements of this work might offer a novel point of view for developing low-cost catalyst towards indirect hydrogen production for SOFC.

A novel dual tubular membrane electrodes reactor was fabricated to degrade a refractory heterocyclic compound-tricyclazole using a tubular membrane Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 as anode and a carbon black-polytetrafluoroethylene (CB-PTFE) modified graphite membrane as cathode. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) and accelerated lifetime tests revealed that a porous tubular membrane Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 performed better electrocatalytic activity and high stability under acidic conditions. Meanwhile, the effects of aeration on electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) were assessed and the role of anode in dynamic system was elucidated by comparing with the static system. The influence of the operative parameters such as current density (2.5–12.5 A/m 2 ), membrane flux (52–178 L/m 2 ·h) and pH (3–11) were optimized and monitored. It is demonstrated that tubular membrane Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 anode provided enough oxygen to electrogenerate H 2 O 2 , up to 1586 mg/m 2 ·h, at 10 A/m 2 without aeration in acidic solution. Even if no circulation of the influent, the best removal rate of contaminants reached a stable value 79% at 20 min, which was 6.58-fold greater than the sum of the individual electrochemical oxidation. Synergism was observed during the dual tubular membrane E-Fenton system.
