Fluorescence thermometry based on metal halide perovskites is increasingly becoming a hotspot due to its advantages of high detection sensitivity, noninvasiveness, and fast response time. However, it still presents certain technical challenges in practical applications, such as complex synthesis methods, the use of toxic solvents, and being currently mainly based on the visible/first near-infrared light with poor penetration and severe autofluorescence. In this study, we synthesize the second near-infrared (NIR-II) luminescent crystals based on Yb3+/Nd3+-doped zero-dimensional Cs2ScCl5·H2O by a simple “dissolve–dry” method. The whole synthesized process does not involve high temperatures or high pressures. Cs2ScCl5·H2O/Yb3+,Nd3+ has an optimum fluorescence performance when the Yb3+/Nd3+ doping amount is 15%/20%. The emission intensity ratio attributed to Yb3+ and Nd3+ varies with temperature, and this variation is exacerbated due to the fact that the 2F5/2 energy level of Yb3+ can be effectively aligned with the O–H bond stretching vibration energy of coordinating water molecules to facilitate energy transfer. Ultimately, the crystals can act as self-referenced ratiometric NIR-II luminescent thermometers with a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.66% K–1 at 323 K. This work highlights the advantages of NIR-II luminescent materials for temperature sensing, which is significant for advancement in the field of noncontact thermometers.

Bacterial infections, especially caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, pose a big challenge to the healthcare system. As a group of historic agents, metals with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity are regarded as promising alternatives to tackle antibiotic resistance. Among them, gallium ions have presented encouraging antibacterial effects in research and preclinic studies. However, utilization of gallium ions has difficulty in achieving high targeting and long-term effectiveness. With the renaissance of liquid metal, here, a novel and facile antibacterial gallium nanostructure is proposed in which polydopamine-modified gallium nanocore serves as an ion reservoir for enhanced metal ion release and the surface also permits secondary reaction, allowing for in situ formation of Ag nanoparticles to improve the antibacterial property, ROS generation, and photothermal performance. Notably, ≈100% bacterial killing efficacy can be achieved when combined with NIR laser irradiation. The in vivo treatment results of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected mice demonstrate that the microneedle patch loaded with nanoparticles exhibits outstanding bacterial elimination and inflammation alleviation, and promotes angiogenesis and collagen deposition, further accelerating wound healing. This gallium-based nanostructure offers an effective nanoplatform for antibacterial treatments and combinatory strategies, which holds significant promise for refractory multidrug-resistant bacteria and related infections.

Lead-free halide double perovskites (DPs) have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in the field of near-infrared (NIR) optoelectronics. However, regulating the NIR luminescence properties of such materials remains a challenge. In this study, it is found that Cs 2 AgInCl 6 :Cr 3+ DPs exhibit a broad NIR emission under ultraviolet excitation, with a peak value of 980 nm. In the range of 9 GPa, the emission intensity increases significantly. As the pressure increases, a transition from broadband NIR emission to narrow-line emission occurs, accompanied by a decrease in the full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 260 to 40 nm, attributed to increased local structural asymmetry and enhanced crystal field around Cr 3+ ions. Ultrafast transient absorption experiments reveal the changes of energy transfer under pressure and the emergence of new radiation channels, demonstrating the dynamic evolution of emission characteristics under high pressure. The research results deepen the understanding of high pressure luminescence in Cr 3 ⁺-doped halide DPs, providing strategies for designing highly efficient NIR emitters in metal halide DPs.

Transparent materials accompanying ultraviolet and near-infrared (UV/NIR) shielding play a crucial role in sunlight management and are desirable for reducing energy consumption in buildings. Herein, a hollow flower-like core–shell hybrid, in which hollow TiO2 spherical cores are bonded with a CsxWO3 hierarchical nanosheet shell (h-TiO2@CsxWO3 hybrid), is prepared for high-efficiency absorption of UV/NIR light and corresponding transparent membrane-based UV/NIR light shielding for thermal management. Impressively, while maintaining high visible light transmission, the h-TiO2@CsxWO3 flower-like hybrids display the almost complete absorption of UV and NIR light caused by the multilevel synergistic scattering and absorption of incident light between the components. Next, to expand the application of building energy conservation engineering, the h-TiO2@CsxWO3 flower-like hybrids are spray-coated onto the surface of a PET film to serve as the membrane material, showing nearly 80% visible light transmission and complete shielding from UV and NIR light. As a proof of concept, based on the UV/NIR light absorbing shield strategy for thermal management, by transferring the as-prepared h-TiO2@CsxWO3/PET functional membrane as “window glass” on a home-made house model, a temperature reduction of ∼16.4 °C could be achieved relative to a blank house under 1 sun irradiation. Further, outdoor testing (Hefei, China) with simulated room temperatures below ∼25 °C throughout a full day's test cycle achieved a sub-ambient cooling temperature of ∼11.5 °C. Thus, both the solar radiation shielding capability and the combined outdoor service performance significantly advance the UV/NIR shielding strategy for real-world solar/thermal-management applications.

Rationale: Retinoblastoma is one of the most aggressive paediatric cancers originating from retina and finally invades vitreous humour or other tissues if treated improperly. Current interventions often fail due to the complexities of tumour progression and drug resistance driven by frequent intravitreal injection and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Consequently, there is an unmet need for more effective, less invasive treatments. Methods: A near-infrared (NIR)-responsive liposome/hydrogel platform that incorporates quercetin (QUE) and doxorubicin (DOX) co-loaded liposomes (QD Lipo), and indocyanine green (ICG) in a low-gelling temperature agarose hydrogel (LAgel) was developed to improve efficacy through localized, on-demand delivery of chemo-photothermal therapy directly at the site of tumour. The initial phase of the study examined the injectability, reversibility and stability of QD Lipo/ICG/LAgel under NIR using cryo -SEM technique and rheological measurement. Following this, photothermal conversion capability and controlled release of QD Lipo, alongside the mobility and penetration of QD Lipo was investigated using infrared thermal imaging, nanoparticle tracking analysis and fluorescence microscope. Moreover, retinoblastoma orthotopic model was established to corroborate the anti-tumour effectiveness in vivo . Flow cytometry, H&E, immunohistochemical staining, animal imaging and western blotting were performed to identify the underling mechanism of QD Lipo/ICG/LAgel to improve the treatment. Results: The thermosensitivity and photothermal conversion capabilities of QD Lipo/ICG/LAgel enable precise, on-demand drug delivery in vitreous, significantly reducing the need for frequent intravitreal injections. In vitro and in vivo evaluation demonstrated that with facilitation of QUE, our platform effectively targets the rapid tumour progression and overcome therapeutic resistance of mild photothermal therapy (PTT), by modulating EMT process and inhibiting heat shock protein (HSP) level. Conclusions: This innovative approach not only mitigates the current challenges of repeated invasive medication, but also sets new strategies for treating complex ocular diseases.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) has emerged as potent therapeutic agents for biofilm-associated bacterial infections. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), involving the generation of high-energy ROS, displays great potential in the therapy of bacterial infections. However, challenges such as insufficient hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and over-expressed glutathione (GSH) levels within the microenvironment of bacterial biofilms severely limit the antibacterial efficacy of CDT. Herein, we have developed a multifunctional nanoplatform (CuS@CaO 2 @Dex) by integrating copper sulfide (CuS) and calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) into dextran (Dex)-coated nanoparticles. This innovative platform enhanced ROS generation for highly efficient biofilm elimination by simultaneously supplying H 2 O 2 and depleting GSH. The Dex-coating facilitated the penetrability of CuS@CaO 2 @Dex into biofilms, while CaO 2 generated a substantial amount of H 2 O 2 in the acidic biofilm microenvironment. CuS, through a Fenton-like reaction, catalyzed the conversion of self-supplied H 2 O 2 into hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and consumed the overexpressed GSH. Additionally, the incorporation of near-infrared II (NIR II) laser irradiation enhanced the photothermal properties of CuS, improving the catalytic efficiency of the Fenton-like reaction for enhanced antibacterial effects. In vivo experiments have demonstrated that CuS@CaO 2 @Dex exhibited remarkable antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacy, exceptional wound healing capabilities, and notable biosafety. In summary, the Dex-coated nanoplatform proposed in this study, with its self-sterilization capability through ROS, holds significant potential for future biomedical applications.

Driven by the global goal of “carbon neutrality”, energy conservation, emission reduction and low-carbon development have become important research directions. Transparent thermal insulation materials can effectively shield near-infrared radiation while maintaining high visible light transmittance , making them widely applicable in building energy conservation . In this paper, antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) and cesium tungsten bronze (Cs x WO 3 , or CWO) are chosen to be composited in order to solve the problems of the poor shielding effect of ATO for short-wavelength near-infrared (NIR) light and the unsatisfactory shielding effect of CWO for long-wavelength NIR light. Therefore, in this study, we employed a one-step hydrothermal method to form a novel CWO@ATO core-shell structure to combine the advantages of both ATO and CWO. By adjusting the composite ratio of ATO and CWO, both the physical and electronic stucutres are effectively tuned to promote the optical modulation in a broad bandwidth. Enventually, the core-shell structured composite exhibit an excellent near-infrared blocking property, surpassing the pure ATO by 27.8 % in the wavelength region of 780∼1500 nm while improving by 14.9 % compared to CWO in the long wavelength between 1500 and 2500 nm. Furthermore, the prepared CWO@ATO core-shell structure repesents near-infrared shielding rate as high as 93.1 % in the full NIR spectrum , and possesses an overall thermal insulation coefficiency (THI) of 9.33 in the full range from 780 nm to 2500 nm, which is substantially larger than that of pure ATO and CWO by a factor of 2.37 and 3.05, respectively. This core-shell structure engineering realizes the utilization of complementary advantages of ATO and Cs 0·33 WO 3 materials, providing a new method to improve the near-infrared performance of energy-saving glass coating , and having broad application prospects in the field of low-carbon buildings.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are unique coordination polymers that have emerged as important candidates for drug delivery in recent years. Herein, we designed a drug delivery system for multi-modal combination therapy (IR-820/DOX@MIL-101-PDA-PEG-F3, simplified as ID@MIL-PPF3). In this study, pH-sensitive nanocarriers MIL-101(Fe) were prepared and loaded with the effective chemotherapy agent doxorubicin (DOX) and the phototherapeutic reagent new indocyanine green (IR-820) using a physical adsorption method. Dopamine was spontaneously polymerized in alkaline solutions to form a hybrid coating on MIL-101(Fe) (denoted as ID@MIL-101-PDA). The surface of ID@MIL-101-PDA was functionalized by the synthesized polymer NH2-PEG-OCH3/F3 to obtain ID@MIL-PPF3. Characterization results show that ID@MIL-PPF3 has a good drug loading rate (27.7%) and photothermal conversion efficiency (28.89%). In addition, Fe3+ released from MIL-101(Fe) can engage in a Fenton-like reaction to generate hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) to realize chemodynamic therapy (CDT). ID@MIL-PPF3 not only demonstrates the ability to intelligently release drugs, but also realizes chemotherapy combined with PDT/PTT/CDT therapy for tumor cells, which was proved by in vitro evaluation. In conclusion, ID@MIL-PPF3 provides a new idea and method for building a multi-modal combination therapy targeted drug delivery platform.

The development of antimicrobial packaging materials serves as an effective means to enhance food preservation and mitigate food waste. This study had developed a near-infrared (NIR)-controlled smart responsive system for the release of antibacterial cinnamon essential oils (CEO), which involves immobilizing CEO within the interlayer of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and decorating it with graphene oxide (GO), designated as LDH@CEO-GO. LDH@CEO-GO was prepared by co-precipitation method. The release kinetics of CEO at various temperatures was investigated, revealing that the release dynamics conform to the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Under NIR light serves as an intelligent switch that can regulate temperature, thereby facilitating the release of CEO. Antibacterial tests demonstrated that LDH@CEO-GO exhibited good antibacterial properties, achieving inhibition rates of 77.5 % and 68.3 % against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. NIR irradiation, the inhibition rates increased to 98.3 % and 97.2 %. Through practical exploration of strawberry preservation, it was found that under NIR light stimulation, LDH@CEO-GO can effectively enhance the preservation of strawberries.

Exogenous electrical stimulation has attracted considerable attention due to the advantages of microelectric induction and subsequent biological effects such as actin reorganization and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Herein, an injectable hydrogel of BPR-ARG@Gel (BAG) with pyroelectric BPR nanoparticle loading and l-arginine (ARG) introduction was fabricated for advanced cancer therapy in vivo. Due to the photothermal effect, the holes and electrons in BPR nanoparticles were separated to produce an open-circuit voltage and consequently catalyze water H2O to generate toxic superoxide (•O2–) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These ROS substances further oxidize ARG to produce NO for synergistic tumor treatments. The mice experiments indicated that the employment of BAG hydrogel incorporation with a near-infrared laser downregulated the heat shock protein and recruited immune cells with 5-fold-enhanced expression of proinflammatory cytokines of interferon-γ. It was also noteworthy that the injectable hydrogel of BAG substantially induced the generation of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) with reliable biosafety and strong tumor inhibition. Overall, these findings have provided potentially new inspirations and a feasible strategy to translate this multifunctional hydrogel toward tumor therapy in a pyroelectric stimulation manner.

The potential of organic coatings in antifouling applications has been well-documented. Beyond their exceptional antifouling effects, these coatings should also possess good mechanical strength and self-healing capabilities. Herein, a novel vinyl-based ionic liquid [VEMIM + ] [Cl – ] (IL) was in situ polymerized and then assembled onto the surface of liquid metal (GLM) nanodroplets to prepare GLM-IL. Subsequently, Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) was modified with GLM-IL nanodroplets to obtain GLM-IL/MXene composite, which acts as an efficient photon captor and photothermal converters and can be further composited with PU film (GLM-IL/MXene/PU). Notably, the composite film significantly increases by ∼117°C after exposure to 200 mW/cm 2 light irradiation. This increase is attributed to the high photothermal conversion efficiency of MXene and the excellent plasma effect of GLM-IL. Compared with pure PU, the GLM-IL/MXene/PU film shows a 50% improvement in tensile strength and above 85.8% healing efficiency with a local temperature increase. Additionally, the as-prepared GLM-IL/MXene/PU film reveals satisfactory antifouling properties, achieving a 99.7% reduction in bacterial presence and an 80.3% reduction in microalgae. This work introduces a novel coating with antifouling and self-healing properties, offering a wide range of applications in the fields of marine antifouling and biomedicine.

Diabetic infections/wounds remain to be a threatening challenge as it seriously leads to lower limb amputation with endless pains and subsequent high economic/psychosocial costs. The exceptional peroxidase-like activity of single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) holds great promise for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) of diabetic infection, but is extremely restricted by the near-neutral pH and insufficient H 2 O 2 levels in physiological conditions. Herein, we innovated a hollow mesoporous molybdenum single-atom nanozyme (HMMo-zyme) featured with catalytic activity, photothermal performance and drug delivery properties for more effective antibacterial therapeutic in diabetic conditions. The glucose oxidase (GOx) was encapsulated into HMMo-zyme with phase-change material (PCM) to form HMMo/GOx@P system, which could be controllably disassembled by near-infrared ray (NIR) to trigger cascade CDT toward bacterial infections. The results revealed that the release of GOx accelerated by NIR could facilitate the continuous conversion of glucose (Glu) into gluconic acid, accompanied by a sharply decrease in pH to establish a low-pH environment that notably enhanced the catalytic activity of HMMo-zyme, which subsequently drives the conversion of generated H 2 O 2 into toxic hydroxyl radicals ( · OH) for amplified anti-bacterial treatment. As a proof of the concept, this NIR-assisted HMMo/GOx@P strategy could efficiently inhibit/kill bacteria and suppress tissue inflammations, thereby accelerating the wound healing processes both in in vitro and in vivo diabetic infection models. This study provides a novel strategy that may serve as a promising alternative for antibiotic therapeutics against diabetic infection, thus holding promise for more effective diabetic infection treatment manipulating Mo-based SAzymes.
