Ethyl 3-(N-butylacetamido) propanoate (EBAAP) is one of the most widely used mosquito repellents worldwide, and is also commonly used to produce cosmetics. Residues have recently been detected in surface and groundwater in many countries, and their potential to harm the environment is unknown. Therefore, more studies are needed to fully assess the toxicity of EBAAP. This is the first investigation into the developmental toxicity and cardiotoxicity of EBAAP on zebrafish embryos. EBAAP was toxic to zebrafish, with a lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of 140 mg/L at 72 hours post fertilization (hpf). EBAAP exposure also reduced body length, slowed the yolk absorption rate, induced spinal curvature and pericardial edema, decreased heart rate, promoted linear lengthening of the heart, and diminished cardiac pumping ability. The expression of heart developmental-related genes ( nkx2.5, myh6, tbx5a, vmhc, gata4, tbx2b ) was dysregulated, intracellular oxidative stress increased significantly, the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased significantly. The expression of apoptosis-related genes ( bax/bcl2, p53, caspase9, caspase3 ) was significantly upregulated. In conclusion, EBAAP induced abnormal morphology and heart defects during the early stages of zebrafish embryo development by potentially inducing the generation and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vivo and activating the oxidative stress response. These events dysregulate the expression of several genes and activate endogenous apoptosis pathways, eventually leading to developmental disorders and heart defects.

In this study, efficient production of the platform chemical 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran (3A5AF) from chitin resources via a chemo-enzymatic protocol was investigated. Initially, chitinolytic enzyme was used to convert chitin into N -acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) using an affinity adsorption–enzymatic reaction integrated approach. Then, the obtained GlcNAc was used to produce 3A5AF using screened ammonium thiocyanate (NH 4 SCN) as the catalyst. The optimal conditions for converting GlcNAc into 3A5AF were determined at a temperature of 180 °C, solvent of DMAc, a molar ratio of GlcNAc to NH 4 SCN of 2:1, addition of CaCl 2 ·2H 2 O, a molar ratio of GlcNAc to CaCl 2 ·2H 2 O of 1:1 and a reaction time of 10 min, resulting in 3A5AF with a molar yield of 56.66%. The NH 4 SCN showed good recyclability within five cycles. Furthermore, upon scaling up of the 3A5AF preparation, a good yield was still maintained. Additionally, 99% pure 3A5AF needle-shaped crystals were obtained with 34 wt% yield by crystallisation purification. This new chemo-enzymatic protocol provides a good option to convert chitin resources into 3A5AF.

NiAl intermetallic compounds have attracted the attention of researchers in the field of high-temperature structural materials, but their poor room-temperature ductility and insufficient high-temperature strength crying out for solutions have hindered their practical application. To solve these problems, a novel 3-dimensional network structure-reinforced NiAl-based composite was designed by hot presing sintering sinter with pre-alloyed powders. The 3-dimensional network structure was composed of discrete nearly spherical HfO 2 and rod-shaped HfRe 2 . The mechanical properties of the composites were closely correlated with the distribution of the 3-dimensional network structure in the matrix, which was controlled by the sintering temperature and holding time. A microstructure with a desirable 3-dimensional network structure distribution and the best comprehensive mechanical properties was produced at 1375 °C/60 min. The microstructural evolution along with the strengthening and toughening mechanisms were discussed in detail. The increase in the high-temperature strength was mainly attributed to the pinning effect of the 3-dimensional network structure on dislocations and the restraining effect on the sliding and rotation between the matrix grains, while the increase in room-temperature ductility was mainly due to the grain refinement and hindering of crack propagation by the 3-dimensional network structure. In this paper, the development of a novel low-density NiAl-based composite with a 3-dimensional network structure improved both the strength and ductility, providing design ideas for the application of NiAl-based materials.

Alluaudite-type Na 2+2x Fe 2− x (SO 4 ) 3 (NFS) has attracted considerable attention as a promising cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), owing to its cost-effective composition and relatively high operating voltage. Nevertheless, the further practical use of NFS is still hindered by its intrinsically low electronic conductivity, slow Na + transport kinetics, and insufficient stability of the cathode interface. Herein, a trace high-entropy-doped sodium iron sulfate cathode, Na 2.5 Fe 1.74125 (MgNiCuZnAl) 0.00175 (SO 4 ) 3 (HE-NFS), is prepared by a spray-drying method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that high-entropy doping narrows the electronic band gap and lowers the Na + diffusion energy barrier. As a result, HE-NFS delivers a discharge capacity of 81.04 mAh g −1 even at 100 C. Analysis after cycling shows that a thin and uniform CEI layer was formed on HE-NFS, which suppresses continuous electrolyte decomposition and interfacial side reactions. The capacity retention remains 83.1% after 500 cycles at 1 C. Moreover, HE-NFS maintains stable electrochemical performance at −10°C and after air exposure, demonstrating its tolerance to low-temperature operation and humid-air storage. These results provide a resource-efficient and scalable cathode-manufacturing strategy for sustainable sodium-ion energy storage toward carbon-neutral energy systems.

The synthesis of ammonia via electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) provides an attractive alternative approach to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. In this regard, a one-step hydrothermal method was adopted to synthesize a bimetallic oxide, ferric molybdate (Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 ), coated with carbon black on the surface (denoted as Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 /C). The carbon black coating minimizes aggregation of Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , leading to increased electrochemical active sites for NRR. Additionally, this coating improves the electrical conductivity of Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 thereby accelerating electron transfer between carbon black and Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , which is beneficial to charge transfer and enlarge the electrochemical active surface areas. At a potential of −0.4 V RHE (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode , RHE), the ammonia yield achieved was up to 51.76 μg h −1 mg cat −1 , with a Faradaic efficiency of 90.63% at −0.35V RHE . Impressively, this electrocatalyst exhibited excellent cycle stability and durability.

Bacterial infections would cause pathological inflammation and even generate chronic wound. Herein, a ciprofloxacin (Cip)-loaded mild acid-responsive electrospinning nanofiber membrane (NFM) containing 3-diethylaminopropyl isothiocyanate material grafted glycol chitosan (GC-DEAP) was fabricated to prevent bacterial infection against hemostatic and inflammatory phases of wounds. The presence of Cip and GC-DEAP in the objective NFM (PCL/GC-DEAP/Cip) was confirmed through XRD and FTIR. Meanwhile, PCL/GC-DEAP/Cip NFM exhibited high mechanical profiles, suitable water absorption and water vapour transmission ratio. The non-protonated amphiphilic GC-DEAP under pH 7.4 facilitated the formation of uniform and smooth nanofibers with polycaprolactone (PCL) and Cip. However, the GC-DEAP was demonstrated to sharply respond to the mild-acid environment of the wound and effectively be protonated, and thus improved the swelling ability of NFM and triggered burst release of Cip. Due to the combination between protonated GC-DEAP and Cip, PCL/GC-DEAP/Cip NFM achieved attractive antibacterial activity in the mild-acid environment in vitro , and induced more efficient prevention of wound infection and faster wound healing compared with the commercial chitosan dressing. The designed NFM is expected to be a potential smart wound dressing against hemostatic and inflammatory phases with mild-acid specifically strengthened antibacterial features and satisfactory biocompatibility.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the most devastating subtype of stroke, nevertheless specific treatments with conclusive clinical benefit in improving outcomes of ICH remain lacking. The present study applied dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP), a compound approved for the treatment of ischemic stroke and rarely studied in ICH, to an experimental animal model of ICH, aiming to evaluate the therapeutic effects of NBP on ICH and the potential mechanisms. The results showed that rats receiving NBP administration exhibited a structural and functional restoration of brain after ICH mainly manifested as alleviation of neuronal apoptosis , suppression of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress , neurovascular remodeling, and eventually improvement of neurological deficits. In addition, several protein targets of NBP were revealed, which mainly play molecular functions of ribonucleoside triphosphate phosphatase activity, pyrophosphatase activity, hydrolase activity and GTPase activity, and participate in the biological process of brain development by regulating the formation of cellular components such as spindles, polymeric cytoskeletal fibers, microtubules and synapses, through mediating pathways such as VEGF signaling pathway, Fc epsilon RI signaling pathway, ECM-receptor interaction, Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis , peroxisome and so on, guiding the mechanism exploration of NBP therapy to some extent. Taken together, the study added some new evidence to the application of NBP in ICH treatment.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 (TRPV3) is a member of the TRP superfamily. Previous studies have demonstrated that TRPV3 is associated with myocardial fibrosis. However, the role of TRPV3 in hepatic fibrosis and its underlying mechanisms are still unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the underlying effects of TRPV3 on hepatic fibrosis at multiple biological levels. First, immunohistochemical staining was performed to examine TRPV3 expression in human hepatic cirrhosis tissues. Then, we established a CCl 4 -induced hepatic fibrosis mouse model. The TRPV3 selective agonist drofenine and its inhibitor, forsythoside B, were intraperitoneally injected to investigate the relationship between TRPV3 and liver fibrosis progression. Finally, in vitro studies were performed using hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to discover the potential molecular biological mechanisms. Immunohistochemistry revealed TRPV3 overexpression in liver cirrhosis. In the liver fibrosis groups, TRPV3 inhibitor treatment significantly reduced liver fibrosis, while TRPV3 agonist exacerbated its progression. In HSCs, knocking down TRPV3 with siRNA impaired DNA synthesis and cell proliferation and increased cell apoptosis. Furthermore, we found that knockdown of TRPV3 could reduce the lectin like oxidized lowdensity lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) protein levels. Our research suggests that lower expression or functional levels of TRPV3 can ameliorate the inflammatory response and fibrotic tissue proliferation.

(1− x )K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 − x Bi(Zn 2/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 ((1− x )KNN− x BZN, x = 0.010, 0.015, 0.020, 0.025, and 0.030) lead-free ceramics were fabricated via a traditional solid-state method. The crystal structure, microstructure, dielectric, and conductivity behavior of this system were studied. Combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, Rietveld refinement, and dielectric spectroscopy, an orthorhombic phase was determined for x = 0.010, an orthorhombic-tetragonal mixed phase was identified for x = 0.015, and a rhombohedral symmetry appears in 0.020 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.030. Both 0.98KNN−0.02BZN and 0.975KNN−0.025BZN ceramics exhibit stable permittivity and low dielectric loss tangent (tan δ ) in wide temperature ranges owing to the combination of rhombohedral-tetragonal step-like feature and the diffuse phase transition from tetragonal to cubic. The activation energies of dielectric relaxation and conductivity behavior at high temperatures initially decrease slightly, then drop sharply, and finally decline slowly, which could be attributed to microstructure morphologies and the concentration of oxygen vacancies.

Novel glucosylated (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate derivatives 10 – 13 having the EGCG analogs conjugated to the d -glucosyl azide were synthesized by carrying out the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction, and were evaluated for their cytotoxicities against a panel of five human cancer cell lines (HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7, and SW480) using MTT assays. Compounds 10 and 11 showed the highest levels of cytotoxicity against the HL-60 cells with IC 50 values of 4.57 and 3.78 μM, respectively, and showed moderate selectivity toward cancer cell lines. Compound 11 was also shown to induce apoptosis in HL-60 cells. Most notably, inclusion of the perbutyrylated glucose residue in an EGCG derivative was concluded to lead to increased anticancer activity.

Visualization of latent fingermarks has ever been realized through electrochromism (EC) on stainless steel used as an electrode of electrochromic device (ECD). However, enhancement of fingermarks on paper using EC remains unresolved. Considering the hydrophobicity differences between the protruding and the concave parts of sebum-containing fingermarks, we attempt to devise ECDs capable of visualizing latent fingermarks on copperplate paper. It is demonstrated that the sulfonated viologen, 1,1′-bis(3-sulfonatopropyl) viologen can be used as an excellent chromophore for latent fingermarks enhancement on copperplate paper using EC, with either 1,1′-ferrocenedimethanol, or vitamin C or potassium ferrocyanide/potassium ferricyanide as the electron mediator. The as-fabricated ECDs can display the characteristic second level details of latent fingermarks left on copperplate paper under a voltage of -1.2 V. This work opens a new avenue for visualizing latent fingermarks on copperplate paper, which is a frequently-used potential physical evidence in office and daily life that may be useful for forensics.
