Activation of strong n-π* transition by grafting abundant hydroxy group on pyridine doping ultrathin carbon nitride for NIR H2 production

Jinqiao Li,Xuefeng Chu,Wenfu Yan,Gang Liu

The light harvesting property of organic photocatalysts relays on the conjugated framework and its circumjacent chemical circumstances. Herein, a step-by-step modified method is practiced to graft abundant hydroxy group on pyridine doping carbon nitride (PyCNS-x), which synchronously regulates the π-π* and n-π* transitions for wide-spectrum responsive. Beforehand, the pyridine is doped into the conjugated framework for the modification of conjugated structure. More operable carbon sites are formed, which are favorable in thermodynamics for the graft of hydroxy group. The high-temperature redox process not only induces the graft of abundant hydroxy group on pyridine doping carbon nitride. But also, an ultrathin nanosheet is formed for the acquisition of large specific surface area. Related measurements manifest that the sheet thickness of PyCNS-80 is 4 nm. Spectral tests confirm that the light response range of PyCNS-80 is up to near-infrared region. Moreover, there is a strong n-π* transition occurrence in PyCNS-80 that further enhances the light absorption from 500 nm to 750 nm. Finally, the hydrogen evolution activity of PyCNS-80 is up to 1887.7 μmol g −1 h −1 and exhibits a detectable number of 9.0 μmol g −1 h −1 under infrared light. Briefly, this work demonstrates a reference to deeply optimize the electron transition behaviors of organic photocatalyst by designing their chemical structure.

Opposite sensing response of H2 and CO on In₂O₃−Co₃O₄ nanocomposite-based gas sensors over a wide temperature range

Ziwen Yao,Jing Li,Shuai Nie,Yuan Wang,Xitao Yin,Yunxia He

Utilizing p-n composite materials for the fabrication of metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors represents a promising strategy to achieve exceptional selectivity in detecting reducing gases such as hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO). However, previous studies have typically achieved this selectivity under fixed operating temperatures and single molar ratios. This study presents the successful synthesis of n-In₂O₃/p-Co₃O₄ nanoparticles, featuring a p-n heterojunction structure, using a simple composite preparation method. The gas-sensing properties, crystal structure, morphology, and chemical states were comprehensively characterized using an electrochemical workstation, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS. Experimental results show that the gas sensor responses of the n-In₂O₃/p-xCo₃O₄ composites (with x = 10.5, 15, 18, 21), annealed at 500°C within an operational temperature range of 350°C to 400°C, exhibit distinct behaviors for CO and H₂ gases. This addresses the challenge of achieving selective detection across varying conditions. Notably, the n-In₂O₃/p-18Co₃O₄ composites display opposing response characteristics for both gases across a broad temperature range of 200°C to 400°C. At 350°C, the n-In₂O₃/p-18Co₃O₄ sensor demonstrates optimal selectivity, significantly minimizing cross-sensitivity and improving detection accuracy and reliability. The sensor also shows excellent stability, with consistent responses under repetitive exposure conditions. By improving both sensor selectivity and stability, this research advances gas detection technologies, with potential applications in sustainable energy and public health monitoring.

1D/2D Sb2S3@SnIn4S8 core-shell S-scheme heterojunction: A bifunctional photocatalyst for concurrent H2 production and antibiotic degradation in wastewater

Renzhi Xiong,Xiao Xiao,Yanjie Song,Keqin Chen,Yanhe Xiao,Baochang Cheng,Shuijin Lei

Photocatalytic technology offers a promising “one-stone-two-birds” solution to simultaneously combat energy scarcity and environmental contamination through hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. However, conventional photocatalysts suffer from severe limitations in bifunctional efficiency due to rapid charge recombination, poor visible-light harvesting, and inadequate redox power. Herein, a novel 1D/2D core-shell Sb 2 S 3 @SnIn 4 S 8 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst is engineered. The unique architecture, featuring Sb 2 S 3 nanorods wrapped by SnIn 4 S 8 nanosheets, achieves (i) maximized interfacial contact and charge transfer pathways, (ii) exposed active sites through high specific surface area, and (iii) directional spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. Crucially, the S-scheme heterojunction drives efficient charge separation while preserving strong redox capability. The Sb 2 S 3 @SnIn 4 S 8 catalyst realizes breakthrough dual-functionality: an outstanding average H 2 evolution rate of 3566.1 μmol g −1  h −1 and an impressive 90.5% degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride under 2 h of visible-light illumination. This performance surpasses the individual components by 7.6-fold (vs. Sb 2 S 3 ) and 4.8-fold (vs. SnIn 4 S 8 ) in H 2 production, highlighting the synergy. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates broad applicability across diverse pollutant systems. This study provides a scalable platform for developing dual-functional photocatalysts toward sustainable energy-water nexus solutions.

Efficiently improved photocatalytic H2 production of Cd0.9Zn0.1S via the fabrication of S-scheme heterojunction with metal–organic framework derived NiFe2O4@C

Caicai Ran,Mang Lu,Linli Hou,Huanggen Yang,Limin Liu

Heterogeneous interface regulation acts a significant role in tailoring the intrinsic physicochemical property for achieving excellent photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance, which still faces a huge challenge. In this work, by comparing H 2 evolution property of various cadmium zinc sulphide (Cd x Zn 1−x S) solid solutions, 1-D Cd 0.9 Zn0 .1 S nanorods possessing the optimum photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance were obtained. Additionally, bimetallic metal organic framework (MOF)-derived NiFe 2 O 4 @C (NFO@C) microspheres with custom-built heterogeneous interface were successfully prepared via a solvothermal/pyrolysis strategy. Moreover, NFO@C microspheres were assembled on Cd 0.9 Zn0 .1 S surface to fabricate a series of NFO@C/Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S heterojunction photocatalysts with varied contents of NFO@C. The NFO@C/Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S heterojunction with a NFO@C content of 20 wt% (abbreviated as NC20) exhibited the highest H 2 production rate of 96.25 mmol g –1  h −1 , which was 3.8 times that of Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S. Under a light wavelength of 420 and 450 nm, the apparent quantum efficiency of NC20 reached 34.8 % and 65.1 %, respectively. The photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity of NC20 remained stable after the 16-h cycle experiment, whereas the severe photocorrosion of Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S was encountered. Furthermore, the easy recyclability of NC20 should not be overlooked. The results of a series of material characterization clearly demonstrate that the introduction of NFO@C could efficiently improve light absorption and the photoinduced carrier separation capability of the composite photocatalysts. This study not only opens up a facile and controllable preparation way for the synthesis of heterojunction structures with tailored heterogeneous interfaces, but also offers a new sight to ameliorate the H 2 evolution capability, stability and recyclability of Cd x Zn 1−x S solid solutions.

Highly efficient H2 and S production from H2S decomposition via microwave catalysis over a family of TiO2 modified MoxC microwave catalysts

Jianan Chen,Jun Zhu,Wentao Xu,Yi Chen,Jicheng Zhou

Highly efficient H 2 and S production from copious waste H 2 S is beneficial from both environmental and energy. Whereas, the highly effective direct decomposition of H 2 S reaction faces a gigantic obstacle, that is, there is the severe thermal equilibrium limitation. Herein, a family of TiO 2 modified Mo x C as novel microwave catalysts have been developed. This work demonstrates that Mo 2 C, Mo 2 C-TiO 2 and MoC@TiO 2 microwave catalysts display excellent catalytic performance to recover both valuable H 2 and elemental S from the direct decomposition of H 2 S under microwave irradiation . The optimal H 2 S conversion of MoC@TiO 2 can be as high as 99.9% (almost complete conversion) at 700 °C, which greatly outpaces the corresponding H 2 S equilibrium conversion under microwave irradiation . This result of the chemical equilibrium limitation being broken shows an interesting phenomenon, namely a significant microwave selective catalytic effect by microwave catalysis in H 2 S decomposition reaction . In addition, the apparent activation energy of the Mo 2 C, Mo 2 C-TiO 2 and MoC@TiO 2 microwave catalysts reduced to 18.2 kJ/mol, 16.8 kJ/mol and 15.6 kJ/mol under microwave irradiation. The work supplies a strategy for highly effective valuable H 2 and S production from H 2 S decomposition reaction , and paves a path to high-value utilization of hazardous waste H 2 S resources with energy-saving heating method.

A novel noble-metal-free Mo2C-In2S3 heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient charge separation for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution under visible light

Xiaohui Ma,Chaojun Ren,Hongda Li,Xintong Liu,Xinyang Li,Kun Han,Wenjun Li,Yifei Zhan,Ajmal Khan,Zhidong Chang,Changyan Sun,Hualei Zhou

Currently, designing novel noble-metal-free photocatalysts with efficient carriers migration and catalytically active sites have been a researching hotspot in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this paper, a novel noble-metal-free Mo 2 C-In 2 S 3 heterojunction was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Morphology characterization revealed In 2 S 3 was attached to Mo 2 C. Electrochemical results showed Mo 2 C improved the interface conductivity, and promoted the transportation of photogenerated carriers. Under visible light, the optimal Mo 2 C-In 2 S 3 composite achieved a H 2 generation rate of 535.58 μmol h −1 g −1 , which was 175.6 and 25.8 times higher than pristine In 2 S 3 (3.05 μmol h −1 g −1 ) and In 2 S 3 -1% Pt (20.73 μmol h −1 g −1 ). In addition, a reasonable mechanism of the elevated photocatalytic activity was also discussed. This study demonstrates commercial Mo 2 C has an important effect of separating carriers and replacing Pt as co-catalyst in heterojunctions. This research also provides a method to design and synthesize new noble-metal-free photocatalysts for excellent hydrogen production activity.

Ni single atoms anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene as H2-Evolution cocatalyst of SrTiO3(Al)/CoOx for photocatalytic overall water splitting

Yuxiang Liu,Xuejun Xu,Sufan Zheng,Shangchun Lv,Hewen Li,Zhichun Si,Xiaodong Wu,Rui Ran,Duan Weng,Feiyu Kang

Aluminum-doped strontium titanate SrTiO 3 (Al), has been demonstrated as the suitable photocatalyst for overall water splitting. Noble metals, such as RhCrO x , are widely applied to accelerate the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . Herein, Ni single atoms anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene (Ni SA-NG) are adopted to replace noble metal as hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution cocatalysts for SrTiO 3 (Al)/CoO x photocatalyst. The prepared Ni SA-NG/SrTiO 3 (Al)/CoO x photocatalyst exhibits remarkable activity for photocatalytic overall water splitting with the H 2 evolution rate of 498 μmol g −1  h −1 and oxygen (O 2 ) evolution rate of 230 μmol g −1  h −1 , respectively. Ni SA-NG not only improves the efficiency of photogenerated charge transfer and separation through the Ti–O–C bonds acting as the electron transfer freeway, but also provides highly active sites to accelerate the surface H 2 evolution rate. This research provides a valuable method to construct SrTiO 3 -based photocatalyst without noble metal cocatalysts.

Sparsely loaded Pt/MIL-96(Al) MOFs catalyst with enhanced activity for H2-SCR in a gas diffusion reactor under 80 °C

Yijun Xue,Wei Sun,Qian Wang,Limei Cao,Ji Yang

MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) are stable materials with both organic and inorganic pores, and possess high surface area fascinating structures. Owing to the unique octahedral of aluminum center and strong Al–O bonds, Al-based MOFs show excellent thermal stability. In this paper, MIL-96(Al) is proved to be effective at dispersing Pt particles evenly and sparsely as it is employed as catalyst support. MIL-96(Al) is synthesized via a water based route and different contents of Pt particles are directly deposited on the surface of MIL-96 in one step by hydrothermal method to prepare Pt X MIL-96 (x represents Pt content) catalysts. The catalyst are sprayed evenly on carbon paper, with Pt content of 0.03%, 0.11%, 0.27% and 0.41%, respectively, and are applied in a gas diffusion reactor with snakelike flow field for low temperature H 2 -SCR. For Pt 5 MIL-96/CP, the NO removal efficiency can reach up to 100% at 60 °C. Electron transfer between Pt and MIL-96 is observed via X-ray photoelectron spectron (XPS). It reveals that the deposited Pt is in metallic state. Meanwhile, the electronic structure of MIL-96 is kept intact in the process of Pt depositing. The excellent performance of Pt 5 MIL-96/CP catalyst strongly suggests its potential application.

Catalytic conversion of syngas to light hydrocarbons via simulated intermediates CO/CO2/DME/N2/H2 over the regulated acidity of SAPO-34

Fanhui Meng,Lina Wang,Muhammad Asif Nawaz,Qian Wang,Zhiyuan Gong,Zhong Li

Direct conversion of syngas to light hydrocarbons has been intensively studied in recent years; however, the high selectivity of light hydrocarbons is still a challenging task to achieve a high CO conversion. Here, a bifunctional catalyst consisting of a methanol synthesis catalyst (CZA) and a methanol to dimethyl ether (DME) catalyst (Al 2 O 3 ) was employed with a hydrocarbon synthesis catalyst (SAPO-34), for syngas conversion to light hydrocarbons in a dual fixed-bed reactor. The conversion of simulated intermediates CO/CO 2 /DME/N 2 /H 2 with a molar ratio of 9/6/4/5/76, obtained from syngas conversion to DME over CZA and Al 2 O 3 , was studied over SAPO-34 zeolites. It was found that SP34-0.1 with Si/Al ratio of 0.1, exhibited low amount of strong acid (0.60 mmol/g) and high selectivity to light olefins (74.1%), while SP34-0.4 with Si/Al ratio of 0.4 exhibited high amount of strong acid (1.00 mmol/g) leading to high selectivity of light paraffins (88.4%). The in-situ DRIFTS analysis illustrated that DME can be rapidly adsorbed on the hydroxyl site of SAPO-34 and decomposed into the surface methyl species, where SP34-0.4 could produce more dimethylcyclopentenyl cationic species than SP34-0.1. It was suggested that the overall reaction route led to a high selectivity to light olefins (84.2%) with a CO conversion of 61.2% on (CZA + Al 2 O 3 ) catalyst combined with SP34-0.1, while a high selectivity to light paraffins (76.3%) could be achieved by combining with SP34-0.4 at 70.3% CO conversion. Since, the current study interprets that the selectivity of hydrocarbons can be adjusted by regulating the acidity of SAPO-34 to achieve a high CO conversion in the dual fixed-bed reactor scheme.

Protonated g-C3N4 cooperated with Co-MOF doped with Sm to construct 2D/2D heterojunction for integrated dye-sensitized photocatalytic H2 evolution

Sheng Zhao,Jing Xu,Min Mao,Lingjiao Li,Xuanhao Li

A dye-sensitive photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction (HER) system with photogenerated carrier directed conduction was constructed. The protonated g-C 3 N 4 combines with the sheet-like Co MOF to form a 2D/2D heterojunction via electrostatic self-assembly. The protonated g-C 3 N 4 and 2D Co-MOF directionally adsorb Eosin Y (EY) and triethanolamine (TEOA) molecules through hydrogen bond and complexation to achieve a whole photocatalytic system. The integral structure effectively facilitates the utilization of dye sensitizer and hole sacrificial agent to achieve the effective and stable photocatalytic H 2 evolution capacity. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of g-C 3 N 4 after protonation is 1.88 times as high as that of the original g-C 3 N 4 . On the basis of 2D/2D heterojunction, Co MOF is doped with rare earth element Sm. The 4f electrons and the difference valences (Sm 3+ and Co 2+ ) further suppress the reorganization of photogenerated excitons to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic HER. The directional coupling of sensitizer and electron sacrificial agent combined with rare earth element doping makes the photocatalytic HER rate of the composite material reached 73.42 μmol . h −1 within 5 h under simulated sunlight.

Photoelectrochemical sewage treatment by sulfite activation over an optimized BiVO4 photoanode to simultaneously promote PPCPs degradation, H2 evolution and E. coli disinfection

Zexiao Zheng,Juhua He,Chencheng Dong,Irene M.C. Lo

A new photoelectrochemical (PEC) system by means of adding sodium sulfite (Na 2 SO 3 ) was developed to treat sewage. The PEC system simultaneously promoted pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) degradation, H 2 evolution and E. coli disinfection using an optimized, visible–light driven BiVO 4 photoanode. The PEC reactions were first carried out in 1.5 mM Na 2 SO 3 electrolyte. 92.3% of 2 ppm benzophenone-3 (BZP) was degraded, and 115.36 μmol of H 2 was produced in 90 min at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was a significant improvement over cases where the electrolyte was either Na 2 SO 4 or NaCl. The sulfite ions were first activated by holes and then converted into sulfate radicals, which played a dominant role in the degradation of BZP. As the holes were caught by the sulfite, charge separation was also enhanced, increasing H 2 evolution. The PEC reactions were also used to treat real sewage, in which case an 82% improvement in the rate constant of BZP degradation, 60% increase of H 2 evolution, and 0.78 log enhancement of E. coli disinfection were achieved by adding 1.5 mM Na 2 SO 3. The system was also feasible to degrade various PPCPs, and showed excellent reusability and stability, proving its great potential in sewage treatment.

Synergistic BiC bond bridges and Bi vacancies orchestrate accelerated charge transfer in S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic H2 production and pollutant degradation

Jiayi Ge,Chaochao Lai,Tongtong Zhang,Meifei Chen,Xintao Zhou,Zhongqiu Luo,Zuqiang Huang,Yanjuan Zhang,Xiunan Cai

Precise engineering of interfacial electron transfer is pivotal for advancing photocatalytic performance. Herein, a metallic Bi-bridged, Bi-vacancy-rich Bi@Bi V -Bi 2 O 3 /CN S-scheme heterojunction featuring orchestrated interfacial charge transport is designed. Bi vacancies in Bi 2 O 3 acts as an efficient hole extraction agent, driving the directional migration of photogenerated holes, while the in-situ generated metallic Bi establishes a rapid electron transfer channel via Bi C interfacial bonding to concentrate electrons onto the CN substrate. Notably, the p-orbital hybridization of Bi with the p orbitals of C modulates the local electronic structure, synergistically enhancing interfacial electron dynamics. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms the formation of Bi C with strong electronic coupling, while density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal directed charge migration at the Bi@Bi V -Bi 2 O 3 and CN interfaces. This dual-channel synergistic mechanism achieves highly efficient spatial separation of charge carriers while preserving highly reductive electrons and highly oxidative holes, providing an ideal platform for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and organic pollutant degradation. Benefiting from the engineered interfacial pathways, Bi@Bi V -Bi 2 O 3 /CN achieves superior photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic, with a tetracycline (TC) degradation rate constant (0.019 min −1 ) and a hydrogen production rate (2903.30 μmol g −1  h −1 ) reaching 5.8 and 12.1 times that of pristine CN, respectively. This work provides novel insights and a theoretical foundation for designing efficient S-scheme photocatalysts with dual-functional capabilities for pollutant degradation and clean energy production.
