The ortho-substituent effect regulating the separation of photogenerated carriers to efficiently photodegrade tetracycline on the surface of FeCo-based MOFs

Ming Ruan,Huajing Zhou,Lingxiang Zhao,Tianding Hu,Liang He,Shaoyun Shan

It is feasible to improve the photodegradation efficiency of organic pollutants by metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-based semiconductors via ligand engineering. In this work, three (Fe/Co)-XBDC-based MOFs were synthesized by introducing different ortho-functional groups X (X = –H, –NO 2 , –NH 2 ) next to the carboxyl group of the organic ligand (i.e., terephthalic acid). The analysis focused on the influence mechanism of the adjacent functional group effect of the ligand on the physicochemical properties of the material and the actual photodegradation activity of TC . Multiple pieces of evidences suggested that the differences in electron-induced and photocharge-transfer mechanisms of the above ortho functional groups affect the crystal morphology and photocatalytic activity of FeCo-MOF during pyrolysis . Interestingly, (Fe/Co)–NH 2 BDC exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity under neutral conditions. The results of density functional theory show that the introduction of a strong donor-NH 2 group can enhance light absorption and act as an “electron pump” to supply electrons to the iron center, accelerating the separation and efficient transport of photogenerated carriers on the ligand-metal bridge. In conclusion, this study is a proposal for a strategy of structural regulation for the enhancement of the catalytic activity of (Fe/Co)-MOFs in the photodegradation of TC.

Patterned durable superhydrophobic and UV protective cotton fabric prepared through inkjet printing of Zn-based MOFs and long alkyl chain siloxane

Zhenjie Wang,Yuwei Guo,Xiyu Song,Chuliang Shen,Yijun Jiang,Ruyi Xie

In order to solve the problems of high energy consumption, high raw material consumption and poor air permeability of fabrics in the dip-baking method, a simple low-liquid inkjet printing method was used to prepare superhydrophobic cotton fabrics. Inkjet printing technology enables precise control over the printing position and droplet amount, allowing for the creation of superhydrophobic patterns on the fabric surface. ZIF-8 precursor solution and long alkyl chain siloxane were formulated as suitable inks and printed on the surface of the fabric, forming a rough interface with low surface energy. The surface micromorphology and chemical structure of the fabric samples were characterized in detail. The prepared ZIF-HDTMS-cotton fabric exhibited superhydrophobic property with a high water contact angle of 158° and self-cleaning property against liquid and solid contaminants. Importantly, after undergoing a variety of harsh damage tests, the modified fabric still exhibited good superhydrophobicity, indicating its favorable chemical stability and mechanical durability. Compared to raw cotton fabric, the treated fabric exhibited an air permeability rate of 311.6 L/m 2 /s, proving its excellent breathability. Due to the high absorption capacity of ZIF-8 to ultraviolet rays, the prepared cotton fabric has obtained a certain ultraviolet protection effect. In addition, through infrared camera observation, it is found that the ZIF-HDTMS-cotton fabric also has a good anti-permeation effect on hot water, which can play a role in preventing scalding. These findings pave the way for the development of patterned multifunctional textiles through precise inkjet printing technology.

Homogeneous electrochemical detection of carcinoembryonic antigen based on target-controlled catalytical reaction of platinum/UiO-66 MOFs nanozyme integrated with aptamer

Jie Zhang,Yuanying Shi,Liming Liu,Bin Qiu,Yue Tian,Guodong Guo

In this work, a novel homogeneous electrochemical (HEC) sensing strategy was developed for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) detection, addressing limitations of traditional electrochemical platforms that necessitate complex electrode modifications and receptor immobilization protocols. This approach integrates platinum nanoparticle-loaded UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks (Pt/UiO) as an oxidase-like nanozyme with CEA-specific aptamer (Apt) as recognition element, establishing a target-responsive catalytic mechanism. In solution-phase operation, the Pt/UiO nanozyme facilitates the oxidation of 1,2-diaminobenzene into electroactive diaminophenazine (DAP), generating measurable reduction current at unmodified electrode. Apt adsorption onto Pt/UiO surfaces effectively inhibits this enzymatic activity through steric hindrance, resulting in current suppression proportional to Apt coverage. The presence of CEA induces specific Apt-CEA binding, resulting Apt away from the nanozyme surface and restoring catalytic activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Optimization of experimental parameters (e.g., nanozyme concentration, incubation time) enabled the sensor to achieve a detection limit of 3 pg mL −1 with a linear range spanning 0.01–11 ng mL −1 , demonstrating potential for point-of-care applications in tumor biomarker analysis.

Single-Chain Conjugated Polymer Guests Confined inside Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Boosting the Detection and Degradation of a Sulfur Mustard Simulant

Shuya Liu,Yongxian Guo,Yifei Jiang,Yanjun Gong,Qiongzheng Hu,Li Yu

Real-time detection and effective degradation of toxic gases have attracted considerable attention in environmental monitoring and human health. Here, we demonstrate a solvent-assisted dynamic assembly strategy to strongly enhance the detection and degradation performance for 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES, as a sulfur mustard simulant) via confinement of a conjugated polymer in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The conjugated polymer poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene-altbenzothiadiazole) (F8BT) is infiltrated into one-dimensional nanochannels of the Zr-based topological MOF NU-1000 in a single-chain manner, which is caused by the nanoconfinement effect and the steric hindrance between 9,9-dioctylfluorene units and benzothiadiazole units. The obtained F8BT⊂NU-1000 composites provide a high specific surface area and abundant active sites. Based on the cooperative effect of F8BT and NU-1000, rapid and sensitive detection of CEES has been achieved. Moreover, the F8BT⊂NU-1000 composites can selectively oxidize CEES into 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) under mild photooxidation conditions. Overall, this study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of conjugated polymer/MOF hybrid materials that show great potential for the sensitive detection and effective removal of hazardous chemicals.

Design of missing linker defects and tuning Ni-dopants engineering for Co-MOFs to boost rate capability and capacity in supercapacitor

Yingli Yang,Hailiang Zhang,Xiaoxia Jia,Guoli Zhang,Gang Li,Kaiying Wang

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising supercapacitor electrode materials due to their structural tunability and high density of electroactive sites. However, intrinsically low electrical conductivity fundamentally constrains their electrochemical performance. To overcome this limitation, we implement a defect engineering strategy, constructing missing-linker defects and Ni dopants within 2D CoNi-BTC/IPA nanosheets via one-pot solvothermal synthesis. This synergistic strategy simultaneously modulates the electronic structure of MOFs while generating supplementary electroactive sites, thereby enhancing charge transfer kinetics and specific capacity—collectively enabling exceptional electrochemical performance. The optimized architecture achieves a high specific capacity of 1220.4 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , representing a five-fold improvement compared to Co-BTC (226.9 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ). Even with an increase in current density from 0.5 to 10 A g −1 , it retains an excellent capacity retention rate of 96.8 %. The CoNi-BTC/IPA//AC hybrid supercapacitor device showcases a power density of 687.7 W kg −1 alongside an energy density of 50.4 Wh kg −1 . Furthermore, it maintains 80 % capacity retention after undergoing 8000 cycles of charging and discharging.

A novel label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on AgNPs@Co(II)MOFs@PtNPs composite for the detection of rabies virus antibodies

Miwan Shi,Yuan Weng,Shengxi Wu,Lu Zhang,Chaoyue Deng,Pengxiang Li,Yunmin Wang,Kui Gu

Utilizing efficient diagnostic methods to assess antibody levels in unexposed individuals and vaccinated populations is of significant importance for the prevention and control of rabies virus (RV). In this study, we developed a novel label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on AgNPs@Co( II )MOFs@PtNPs composite materials for the rapid detection of RV antibodies. The RV nucleocapsid protein (NP) antigen and its nanobodies were firstly prepared using genetic engineering techniques as reagent materials. Next, a bimetallic composite of AgNPs@Co( II )MOFs@PtNPs was synthesized via a mixed solvothermal method, with cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) serving as the substrate. This composite was deposited onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode, where the RV-NP antigen was covalently attached to the Co-MOF surface, enabling specific binding with RV antibodies. The antigen-antibody interaction resulted in detectable changes in the current, facilitating the sensing process. Finally, the developed immunosensor exhibited a linear detection range for RV NP antibodies from 7.576 × 10 −11  mol/L to 3.788 × 10 −5  mol/L, with a correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.9965 in differential pulse voltammetry, and the limit of detection was defined as 4.508 × 10 −10  mol/L. Furthermore, the newly immunosensor demonstrated excellent repeatability, stability, specificity, and clinical applicability, making it a promising, precise, and cost-effective tool for the early screening of RV antibodies.

ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC superhydrophobic coatings mimicking layered stone structures enhance anti-fouling, corrosion resistance, and antibacterial properties of magnesium alloys

Jia Su,Xinyu Pei,Hongying Shi,Jiajia Luo,Yi Chen,Qin Yang,Jiwei Huang,Wenzhai Cao,Jianwen Zhang,Junying Chen

Magnesium alloys are promising for biodegradable medical devices due to their low density, high specific strength, and excellent biocompatibility. However, their rapid corrosion, protein fouling, and bacterial adhesion severely limit clinical applications. Here, a stratified-rock-inspired micro/nano-structured ZnS/Zn-MOFs coating was fabricated on AZ31B via a one-step hydrothermal route and post-functionalized with stearic acid (SA) and chloramphenicol (CAP) to afford a superhydrophobic ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC surface (water contact angle ≈ 164°). The coating retained its superhydrophobicity after ultrasonication, adhesive-tape peeling, and sandpaper abrasion. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the corrosion current density (I corr ) decreased from ∼10 -3 A cm −2 (bare alloy) to 7.66 × 10 -7 A cm −2 , corresponding to a four-order-of-magnitude improvement, while the diameter of the capacitive loop in the Nyquist plot increased by five orders of magnitude. In vitro bacterial tests show the coating fully prevents bacterial adhesion. The inhibition zones for E. coli and S. epidermidis reach 3.1 cm and 4.4 cm. And it has been established that bacterial growth levels below the detection limit (10 5 CFU cm −2 ) cannot effectively evaluate its antimicrobial efficacy. These results demonstrate that the ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC coating simultaneously provides robust corrosion protection, anti-fouling, and antibacterial activities, offering great potential for next-generation biodegradable implants.

Fabrication of a novel nanohybrid via the introduction of Ni/Mn-LDH into Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs for high-performance electrochemical supercapacitor

Tian-Li Meng,Jia-Wei Wang,Ying-Xia Ma,Xin-Quan Chen,Lei Lei,Jing Li,Fen Ran

Layered double hydroxide (LDH), as an electrode material, consists of positively charged layers and interlayer hydrated anions and is endowed with promising prospects in supercapacitors (SCs) due to its large specific surface area, tunable metal ions, abundant redox active sites, and low cost. Moreover, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit adjustable pore sizes, while multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) boast exceptional electrical conductivity. Hence, in this work, flower-like nickel/manganese layered double hydroxide (Ni/Mn-LDH) was introduced into nanohybrid of MWCNTs decorated with nickel metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs) to fabricate a novel Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid as electrode material for SCs using a two-step solvothermal method. In the composite structure of the novel Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid, the flower-like assembly of Ni/Mn-LDH nanosheets was seamlessly integrated with MWCNTs adorning the Ni-MOFs, creating an interconnected hierarchical porous network. This distinctive structure, coupled with the synergistic effects of its components, facilitated the swift diffusion of electrolyte ions. Furthermore, it enhanced the accessibility to more active sites at the interfaces during the redox process, thereby contributing considerably to an improved electrochemical performance. The specific capacity of the Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid as electrode material obtained at the optimal experimental conditions was 1151.0C g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 . The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) had an energy density of 25.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 845.3 W kg −1 . The fabrication strategy of the Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH could be extended to synthesize other nanohybrid.

Defect-Engineered Z-Scheme Heterojunction of Fe-MOFs/Bi2WO6 for Solar-Driven CO2 Conversion: Synergistic Surface Catalysis and Interfacial Charge Dynamics

Ting Liu,Yun Wu,Hao Wang,Jichang Lu,Yongming Luo

The urgent need for sustainable CO2conversion technologies has driven the development of advanced photocatalysts that harness solar energy. This study employs a CTAB-assisted solvothermal method to fabricate a Z-scheme heterojunction Fe-MOFs/VO-Bi2WO6(FM/VO-BWO) for photocatalytic CO2reduction. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) was employed to confirm the existence of oxygen vacancies, while spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (STEM) characterization verified the successful construction of heterointerfaces. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra confirmed that the defect configuration and heterostructure changed the surface chemical valence state. The optimized 1.0FM/VO-BWO composite demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic performance, achieving CO and CH4yields of 60.48 and 4.3 μmol/g, respectively, under visible-light 11.8- and 1.5-fold enhancements over pristine Bi2WO6. The enhanced performance is attributed to oxygen vacancy-induced active sites facilitating CO₂ adsorption/activation. In situ molecular spectroscopy confirmed the formation of critical CO2-derived intermediates (COOH* and CHO*) through surface interactions involving four-coordinated and two-coordinated hydrogen-bonded water molecules. Furthermore, the accelerated interfacial charge transfer efficiency mediated by the Z-scheme heterojunction has been conclusively demonstrated. This work establishes a paradigm for defect-mediated heterojunction design, offering a sustainable route for solar fuel production.

In-situ regulation of Cu single-atom sites with axial nanoclusters in MOFs for selective fenton-like reactions in water decontamination

Cao Yang,Shanshan Shang,Yixuan Wang,Pei Wang,Lianpeng Sun,Xiao-yan Li

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have garnered significant attention owing to their high reactivity; however, precise control of their electronic structure for Fenton-like process remains a challenge. In this study, we develop a novel technique for regulating the electronic environment of Cu-SACs to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for highly effective degradation of emerging organic pollutants in water. By in-situ axial modification of Cu-SACs with Cu 2 O nanoclusters within a porphyrin metal–organic framework (Cu 2 O clu -Cu SA /PMOF), we finely tuned the electronic structure of Cu-SACs, leading to the selective generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the predominant reactive species in a nonradical Fenton-like process. The rate constant of the Cu 2 O clu -Cu SA /PMOF catalyst for PMS oxidation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) surpassed that of Cu 2 O and Cu SA /PMOF by 12.9 and 3.7 times, respectively, outperforming most state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts for PMS activation. Density functional theory calculations elucidated that the modulation of electronic structure of the Cu sites in Cu 2 O clu -Cu SA /PMOF led to the preferred adsorption of PMS in the terminal-O mode and altered the electron transfer from PMS to the Cu sites for 1 O 2 generation through the self-reaction of SO 5 •− intermediates. This work presents a new material strategy by modulating the functionality of single-atoms via axial incorporation of nanoclusters in MOFs, realizing a highly efficient and selective Fenton-like oxidation process for sustainable water purification.

MnOX-CeO2 Bimetal Oxides Derived from Ce-Based MOFs as a Synergistic Catalyst Boost the Aerobic Oxidative Dehydrogenation of N-Heterocycles

Zhixian Wang,Yuntao Hu,Zhigang Zhang,Bin Wang,Gengxiu Zheng,Huaiqing Zhao

The development of synthetic methods for N-heterocyclic compounds have garnered considerable attention due to their significance in diverse chemical processes. Among various synthesis methods, the direct oxidative dehydrogenation of saturated substances to N-heteroaromatics is a simple and efficient method. This study utilized the pyrolysis of Mn/Ce-BTC MOFs precursor to prepare MnO X -CeO 2 composites as a heterogeneous catalyst for the aerobic oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles. The MnO X -CeO 2 composites were analyzed with various characterization techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, ICP-OES and Raman spectroscopy. The detailed findings from experiments indicate that the catalytic activity of the composites has been significantly improved due to the synergistic effect of MnO X -CeO 2 and the abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalyst. And the related mechanism experiments reveal that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in this catalytic system. Furthermore, MnO X -CeO 2 composites retain excellent catalytic performance even after ten recycles. Graphical The synthesized bimetallic oxides MnO X -CeO 2 by the pyrolysis of Mn/Ce-BTC MOFs have been employed as a heterogenous catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles to N-heteroaromatics with oxygen as the solo oxidant.

Photoelectrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering dual-mode aptasensor based on WS₂/Cu-TCPP MOFs Z-scheme heterojunction for microcystin-LR detection

Siyuan Wang,Shuda Liu,Shuyun Meng,Yuqing Li,Na Dong,Zuo Chen,Wenjia Li,Dong Liu,Tianyan You

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a toxic cyanotoxin, poses severe risks to environmental and human health with its efficient detection urgently required for water safety monitoring. Here, we reported a photoelectrochemical (PEC)-surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) dual-mode aptasensor based on WS 2 /copper(II) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (WS₂/Cu-TCPP) MOFs Z-scheme heterojunction with a single laser source to produce photocurrent and SERS signals. To access interference between PEC and SERS signals, their correlation was systematically examined by applying a certain bias voltage. This bias voltage drives photogenerated electrons into external circuit, thereby enhancing carrier separation efficiency and suppressing the return of Raman photons to the ground state. In this way, a complementary “PEC-enhancement/SERS-attenuation” signal pattern can be achieved to allow better reliability for biosensing. The presence of ascorbic acid (AA) replicated an identical response to confirm competitive coupling between PEC and SERS derived from WS₂/Cu-TCPP heterojunction. Based on this signal transduction mechanism and localized generated AA by magnetic separation, a dual-mode aptasensor was developed for MC-LR detection with superior sensitivity and interference resistance. It allowed a linear range of 0.01–50 ng mL −1 and a detection limit of 0.14 pg mL −1 for MC-LR as well as high selectivity and stability for real water samples analysis. This work should offer an efficient paradigm for precise analysis of hazardous pollutants in complex matrices.
