Ultra-high‑nickel layered oxide cathode materials are considered key candidates for next generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to their remarkable specific discharge capacity. However, its extremely high nickel content results in severe structural degradation and interfacial side reactions during cycling, thus restricting its practical application. This work proposes a novel bulk-surface Al/Ti continuous modification strategy. Through this strategy, Al and Ti are co-doped into the bulk phase of NCM955, while a fast-ion-conducting solid electrolyte, Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), is coated on the surface. The modified NCM955 delivers a high reversible capacity of 223.09 mAh/g at 0.1C (2.7–4.3 V) with excellent initial coulombic efficiency. After 100 cycles at 1C, the capacity retention and remaining capacity reach 90.18% and 183.44 mAh/g, and the capacity retention after 100 cycles in a full cell is 93.29%. Even after 100 cycles at a high rate of 10C, it retains 97.3% of its capacity. Bulk Al/Ti doping strengthens the transition metal‑oxygen bond energy, effectively suppressing lattice oxygen loss and inhibiting Ni 2+ migration. As a result, it reduces cation mixing and prevents structural deterioration during cycling. Simultaneously, the surface LATP coating enhances interfacial Li + diffusion kinetics, serves as a physical barrier against side reactions with air and electrolyte, and helps compensate for active lithium loss during cycling. This work demonstrates that the bulk-surface Al/Ti continuous modification strategy, achieved through synergistic Al/Ti co-doping and LATP coating, offers an effective approach to enhance the structural stability and electrochemical performance of ultra-high‑nickel cathode materials.

This work examines the response of Ti-6Al-4V fabricated by wire-laser directed energy deposition (DED) to heat inputs between 175 and 350 J/mm. Microstructure, tensile behavior, and rotating-bending fatigue were evaluated. As input increased, the transverse size of columnar prior β grains rose from about 642 to 1079 μm and the mean α-lath width increased from 0.65 to 1.32 μm. The α structure consequently changed from a fine acicular/basketweave form to a coarser lamellar form with clearer colonies. Tensile and yield strengths stayed near 900 and 840 MPa, whereas elongation fell from 14.3% to 10.3%. After a 600 °C, 4 h stress relief, fully reversed fatigue tests were performed at 500 MPa (R = −1). Specimens with 175 J/mm heat input reached about 3 × 107cycles, while one with 350 J/mm fractured at roughly 1 × 105cycles. The longer life of H175 coincided with its finer interwoven α structure, closer striations, more secondary cracks, and a more tortuous crack route.

The extensive solid-liquid interface between the photoanode and the electrolyte solution impedes the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), resulting in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting efficiency that falls short of theoretical predictions. In this study, by depositing a metal-phytate complex (CoCu-PA) coating onto Ti, Zr co-doped Fe 2 O 3 via a hydrothermal method, we successfully fabricated a CoCu-PA/Ti,Zr:Fe 2 O 3 composite photoanode for water oxidation. Various characterization techniques and electrochemical analyses indicated that Ti, Zr co-doping enhanced the conductivity of Fe 2 O 3 . More importantly, owing to the highly hydrophilic property of CoCu-PA, the charge transfer resistance at the interface between the composite photoanode and the solution is significantly reduced. Furthermore, a built-in electric field was formed within the photoanode, facilitating the rapid migration of photogenerated charges and their efficient injection into the electrolyte to participate in the OER. As a result, the CoCu-PA coating enhanced the OER kinetics of the composite photoanode and led to a photocurrent density of 3.4 mA/cm 2 . This study offers new insights into the design of composite photoanodes to improve charge migration efficiency both within the bulk material and at the solid-liquid interface.

MAX phase ceramics, as a family of ternary layered ceramics, have received a lot of attention in the past decade due to their potential as precursors for two-dimensional transition metal carbides. However, due to complex multi-component metallurgical reactions, multicomponent MAX phase ceramics have always faced difficulties in purification and homogenization. This paper identifies a new strategy for synthesizing multicomponent MAX phase ceramics that can eliminate these synthesis difficulties. This path utilizes low-temperature (below 1000°C) stable Ti 2 AlC and carbide powder as initial materials to simplify complex multi-component reactions into a one-step reaction, successfully achieving high purity and precise doping ratio. As an example, four novel doped MAX phase ceramics, Ti 2 MAlC 2 (M = Nb, Ta, W) and Ti 2 HEAlC 2 (HE = 1/7Ti, 1/7V, 1/7Zr, 1/7Nb, 1/7Hf, 1/7Ta, 1/7 W) were successfully synthesized using this method. This dynamic-based design, on one hand, simplifies the reaction mechanism to make purification easier, and on the other hand, the concentrated release of entropy during the reaction process promotes phase transition and related element homogenization.

This work delves into the fascinating transformation from organic precursors to dense SiC-modified (Ti, Zr, Hf)C solid solution ceramics. Nanocrystalline powder was crafted through an innovative sol-gel process coupled with carbothermal reduction, followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) to obtain the multi-phase ceramics. The results indicate that the addition of silicone alkoxide is required for forming a robust multi-phase gel network, which facilitates the formation of oxide intermediates (e.g., ZrSiO 4 , HfSiO 4 ), accelerates phase transformation, and inhibits grain from coarsening by encapsulating Ti/Zr/Hf compounds while reinforcing grain boundaries. After pyrolysis at 1400 °C, the precursors gradually evolved into a highly crystalline, medium-entropy solid solution. The optimal sintered composite achieves a relative density of 97.8 % and an open porosity of 0.4 %. The mechanical properties were improved by induced lattice distortion and effect of fine-grained strengthening with the incorporation of SiC. Nanoindentation tests reveal that the hardness and elastic modulus of the (Ti, Zr, Hf)C-SiC composite reach 22.39 GPa and 342.78 GPa, respectively.

Titanium (Ti) alloys have low thermal conductivity, suffer from tool wear and deformation of workpieces and are difficult-to-machine metals. This contributes to surface roughness, Sa > 240 nm of Ti alloys after mechanical polishing with a low material removal rate (MRR). With the addition of assisting energy fields, the MRR is usually lower than 7 μm h−1. Nevertheless, there is a high demand to achieve Sa < 50 nm on a free surface blade to save energy and reduce the resistance of fluids. To address this challenge, novel photocatalytic shear-thickening chemical mechanical polishing (PSTCMP) was developed using a custom-made polisher. The new PSTCMP slurry contained ceria, corn starch, sodium bicarbonate and deionized water. After PSTCMP, the Sa and thickness of the damaged layer of a free surface blade of a Ti alloy decreased from 501.71 to 38.46 nm and from 634.79 to 7.83 nm, respectively, representing reductions of 92% and 99%. The MRR is 12.52 μm h−1. To the best of our knowledge, both the Sa and MRR are the best published to date for a Ti alloy blade with a free surface. PSTCMP mechanisms were interpreted using first-principles molecular dynamics, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Hydroxyl radicals were generated under ultraviolet irradiation on ceria with a size of 4.2 nm, oxidizing the surface of the Ti alloy and forming Ti–OH and Ti–O groups. A Ce–O–Ti interface bridge was produced between Ti–OH and Ce–OH, induced by the hydrolysis of ceria. Our findings provide a new way to fabricate nanometer-scale surface roughness on a free surface blade of a Ti alloy with a high MRR.

A novel dual tubular membrane electrodes reactor was fabricated to degrade a refractory heterocyclic compound-tricyclazole using a tubular membrane Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 as anode and a carbon black-polytetrafluoroethylene (CB-PTFE) modified graphite membrane as cathode. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) and accelerated lifetime tests revealed that a porous tubular membrane Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 performed better electrocatalytic activity and high stability under acidic conditions. Meanwhile, the effects of aeration on electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) were assessed and the role of anode in dynamic system was elucidated by comparing with the static system. The influence of the operative parameters such as current density (2.5–12.5 A/m 2 ), membrane flux (52–178 L/m 2 ·h) and pH (3–11) were optimized and monitored. It is demonstrated that tubular membrane Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 anode provided enough oxygen to electrogenerate H 2 O 2 , up to 1586 mg/m 2 ·h, at 10 A/m 2 without aeration in acidic solution. Even if no circulation of the influent, the best removal rate of contaminants reached a stable value 79% at 20 min, which was 6.58-fold greater than the sum of the individual electrochemical oxidation. Synergism was observed during the dual tubular membrane E-Fenton system.

The bifunctional photocatalyst CDs@NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti), carbon nanodots (CDs) encapsulated in NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti), was constructed in situ by a simple and convenient low-temperature calcination approach, which exhibited great capacity in NO removal (at air level) and H 2 evolution simultaneously under visible-light irradiation. The NO removal rate of CDs@NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (10 mM) reached 53%, which was 28.4% higher than pristine NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti). Moreover, the H 2 production rate was 5820.95 μmol g −1 , which was 5.34 times higher than that of original NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti). The corresponding optical and electrical performances of CDs@NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) characterized by UV–Vis, UCPL, ESR, and in situ DRIFTS , etc. indicated that the encapsulated CDs uniformly dispersed in the pores of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) could improve the visible light utilization via the up-conversion effect and photosensitization, and serve as an electron-receiver to significantly prolong the lifetime of the photogenerated charge carriers, thus enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The results revealed that fabricating CDs with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could be an available strategy for us to boost the photocatalytic NO elimination and H 2 evolution activity simultaneously.

The Electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) technique has shown great potential in wastewater treatment, while the sustainable and continuing supply of Fe2+remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of a novel E-Fenton system by magnetically decorating zero-valent iron (ZVI) onto a RuO2-IrO2/Ti (ZVI-RuO2-IrO2/Ti) electrode for high-efficient treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, which is considerably refractory and harmful to conventional biological processes. By using ZVI as a durable source of Fe(II) irons, 78.69% of COD and 76.40% of TOC may be rapidly removed by the developed ZVI-RuO2-IrO2/Ti electrode, while the ZVI-RuO2-IrO2/Ti electrode using ZVI only reduces 35.64% of COD under optimized conditions at initial COD and TOC values of 5500 mg/L and 4300 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, the increase in BOD5/COD from 0.21 to 0.52 highlights the enhanced biodegradability of the treated effluent. The analysis of a simultaneously formed precipitation on electrodes suggests that the coagulation process dominated by Fe3+/Fe2+also plays a non-negligible role in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. In addition, the monitoring of the evolution of nitrogen elements and the formation of by-products in the E-Fenton process verifies its great capacity toward those organic pollutants found in pharmaceutical wastewater. Our study offers a practical solution for enhancing the performance of E-Fenton systems, and effectively treating refractory pharmaceutical wastewater.Keywords:electro-oxidation;zero-valent iron;pharmaceutical wastewater;E-Fenton process

This study investigates the effect of oxygen vacancies on the dielectric, magnetic, and optical properties of Sm and Ti co-doped bismuth ferrite (Bi 0.85 Sm 0.15 Fe 0.97 Ti 0.03 O 3 ) ceramics, labeled as BSFO N (N 2 -sintered) and BSFO O (O 2 -sintered), which exhibited a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). X-ray diffraction analysis, Rietveld refinement, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the MPB structure, comprised polar rhombohedral ( R3c ), antipolar orthorhombic ( Pbam ), and nonpolar orthorhombic ( Pnma ) phases. The nonstoichiometric ratio from Rietveld refinement revealed higher oxygen vacancies and Bi decomposition in BSFO N ceramics. Scanning electron microscopy revealed larger grain sizes with small holes in BSFO N ceramics, while BSFO N ceramics displayed a dense, hole-free morphology. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further confirmed the presence of higher Fe 2+ oxidation states and increased oxygen vacancy formation in the BSFO N ceramics. The BSFO N ceramic exhibited a higher dielectric constant ( ) and higher dielectric loss ( ), both of which decreased with increasing frequency. In addition, the BSFO N ceramic displayed lower impedance, higher AC conductivity, and lower activation energy. The higher oxygen vacancies in BSFO N ceramics promoted ferromagnetism. Furthermore, BSFO N ceramics exhibited a slightly reduced optical bandgap ( = 2.063 eV) and a stronger second-harmonic generation response, confirming the effect of oxygen vacancies on the optical properties of Sm and Ti co-doped bismuth ferrite ceramics with an MPB.

Constructing a multi-component structure is an effective strategy to promote the formation of oxygen vacancies (OVs), which can enhance electron transition to improve the photocatalytic activity of materials. In this work, it was designed a series of novel photocatalysts supported on calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) via density functional theory calculation. These designed photocatalysts were then synthesized and marked as Bir@C-S-H, TiO 2 /Bir@C-S-H, and α-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 /Bir@C-S-H, respectively. In comparison to other catalysts, α-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 /Bir@C-S-H photocatalyst has a higher specific surface area, a lower band gap, more OVs, which can activate more dioxygen molecules, and more reactive radicals. The photocatalytic activity of as-synthesized photocatalysts was verified by using HCHO as the target pollutant. To the treatment of 80 ppm HCHO, the α-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 /Bir@C-S-H exhibits 100% HCHO conversion corresponding gas hourly space velocity of 60 L/(g•h) with a relative humidity of 60% under visible light irradiation, while Bir@C-S-H and TiO 2 /Bir@C-S-H present 89.92% and 94.17% HCHO conversion, respectively at same conditions. This work demonstrates a more effective calcium silicate hydrate decorated by Fe, Ti co-modified birnessite heterostructures for HCHO oxidation, which can be directly used as decorative materials, providing a novel guidance for practical application.

Alkene epoxidation is a very important reaction process for the selective generation of chiral products, usually performed in some solvent(s) with different polarity, solubility and proton properties. These physical properties are entangled and do not explain very well whether they are mainly against population or stability of the reaction intermediates during catalysis. Here, we investigate how different solvents with known polarity properties (CH 3 CN, (CH 3 ) 2 CO, CH 3 OH, etc.) affect the C 6 H 10 transformation over Ti-Beta catalysts. Combining kinetic measurements, thermodynamic investigations and isotope experiments, the solvent was found not to change the reaction path or mechanism, with C 6 H 10 epoxidation most likely following the Eley-Rideal mechanism and C 6 H 10 O hydration following a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, and both nucleophile and carbonium were found to be involved in the transition state (c.a. SN 2 process) of hydration. However, in the epoxidation reaction of C 6 H 10 with CH 3 CN and (CH 3 ) 2 CO as solvents, the reaction order of [C 6 H 10 ] is subtly different and the epoxidation rate increases with increasing volumetric fraction of CH 3 CN in the binary mixture, which indicates that the solvent affects the concentration of dissolved C 6 H 10 surrounding the active sites and leads to the corresponding differences in activity and product selectivity. Nevertheless, the measured apparent reaction barrier (energy difference between transition state and MASIs) spans the elementary step of solvent modification, thus allowing for the observation of negligible solvent thermodynamic modification. Collectively, these findings provide clear evidence of solvent effects on alkene epoxidation and can be easily extended to some other reactions in solvents.
