Preparation and application of high sound insulation polyurethane composite film through glass fiber reinforcement

Hongyan Liu,Siqi Zhan,Yanyan Bo,Wenhe Ding,Ruize Yuan,Zaiqian Yu,Yuting Zhang,Yuetong Sun,Longjiao Yu,Shiwei Wang,Mingyao Zhang

Laminated glasses have been widely used in buildings, physical protections, and vehicles because of their safety, sound insulation, thermal insulation, and other performance. In recent years, the high sound insulation performance of laminated glass intermediate films in the frequency range of low or high frequencies has attracted more and more attentions. In this work, a glass fiber/polyurethane elastomer composite (PU-MGF) film with high transparency and impact resistance has been successfully synthesized, 5 dB of the transmission loss increased at 1600–6000 Hz, and 3.6 dB increased at 63–1600 Hz compared with the control polyurethane film. This is a significant progress in the laminated glass industry. In addition, the transmittance of the composite reaches over 75%. The excellent impact resistance of the laminated glass, based on PU-MGF film, has been confirmed through falling ball impact test, demonstrating its ability to withstand multiple impacts without spattering. The PU-MGF film prepared in this work exhibits great potential for applications in building windows, transportation, and soundproof devices.

Synthesis and characterization of aromatic copolyesters derived from bisphenol B and phenol red

Zhoufeng Wang,Junwei Hu,Bolin Wang,Yingying Liu,Xiubo Long

A series of novel aromatic copolyesters derived from bisphenol B (BPB) and phenol red (PR) were synthesized by interfacial polymerization. The number- and weight-average molecular weight ( M n and M w ) of the obtained amorphous aromatic copolyesters ranged from 1.06–1.80 × 10 4 to 2.01–6.17 × 10 4 g/mol, respectively. Density functional theory calculations showed that the reactivity of BPB was similar to that of bisphenol A. The reaction activation energy of BPB with terephthaloyl and isophthaloyl chloride (TPC and IPC) was 8.23 kcal/mol, and PR with IPC and TPC was 59.30 kcal/mol. Under the influence of the ethyl side group of BPB and the pendant group of PR, the solubility of the aromatic copolymer was improved, and the glass transition temperature ( T g ) was 125.1–195.3°C, while T max could still be maintained above 525.72°C. The optical transmittance of the copolyesters at 450 nm ( T 450 ) was 69.29%–99.41%, and the tensile strength and Young's modulus were in the range of 46.79–58.59 MPa and 1.39–1.86 GPa respectively. All aromatic copolyesters exhibit good mechanical and processability properties and have great application potential as high-performance plastics.

Synthesis of metal-containing Schiff based cyclomatrix polyphosphazene microspheres based on polyoxometalates and application in flame retardance for epoxy resin

Chaohua Peng,Hui Xu,Guorong Chen,Weiang Luo,Birong Zeng,Conghui Yuan,Yiting Xu,Lizong Dai

A novel kind of polyoxometalate (POM) -containing Schiff based polyphosphazene microspheres (PSPMs) were successfully prepared through the polycondensation between POM-containing polyaldehyde and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane. The PSPMs attained excellent thermal stability and demonstrated good monodispersity with a diameter of about 400 nm. In this work, the fire resistance of PSPMs was investigated in the epoxy resin (EP) matrices. Notably, the PSPMs displayed good distribution in EP matrices. Therefore, the dynamic mechanical properties of EP/PSPMs composite were enhanced. After the addition of 4 wt% PSPMs, the thermogravimetric analysis showed that the char yield at 750°C of the EP/PSPMs composite increased from 12.9 wt% (EP) to 29.0 wt% in nitrogen. And the composite attained a limiting oxygen index of 27.5% and passed the UL-94V-1 rating. In comparison with that of pure EP, the peak value of the heat release rate and total smoke production decreased dramatically. Meanwhile, the toxic CO gas was largely reduced due to the reduction reaction of POM during the combustion process. To further illuminate the flame-retardant mechanism, the char residues and gaseous pyrolysis products of EP/PSPMs were examined. This work may provide a new perspective for the synthesis and application of functional metal-containing polymer microspheres.

A phosphorus/silicon-containing flame retardant based on eugenol for improving flame retardancy and smoke suppression of epoxy resin

Xiaohan Li,Qiunan Xie,Jieying Lin,Jiateng Huang,Kaili Xie,Jingcheng Liu,Xiaojie Li,Wei Wei

Epoxy resin (EP) has excellent comprehensive properties, but its inherent flammability limits its further application in high-end industries. The present study focuses on the preparation of an efficient phosphorus/silicon-containing flame retardant for improving the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of EP. The intermediate product ED was first obtained by the addition reaction of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) with eugenol, and then the target flame retardant DPSi-ED was synthesized by the Williamson etherification reaction between ED and dichlorodiphenylsilane. The flame retardant was further incorporated into EP/4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) system to prepare the modified epoxy thermosets. The flame-retardant performance and mechanism were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical combustion test, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis-infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR), and so forth. At the same phosphorus content (0.5 wt%), EP/DPSi-ED thermosets exhibited superior flame-retardant properties to EP/ED thermosets. Moreover, EP/DPSi-ED7 achieved a LOI of 35.3% and V-0 rating in UL-94 testing, and compared to EP/ED7, its peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) were reduced by 31.5% and 10.9%, respectively. The phosphorus and silicon elements synergistically contributed to the formation of a stable char layer, which acted as a physical barrier to effectively enhance the flame-retardant properties of the thermosets. Meanwhile, the incorporation of DPSi-ED containing flexible Si  O bonds and rigid DOPO groups to some extent also improved the mechanical properties of the cured EP. Hence, this study provides an effective strategy for the preparation of bio-based phosphorus/silica-containing high-efficiency and smoke-suppressing flame retardants.

The sustainable recycling of polyvinylidene fluoride membrane for tribological application

Lifen Liang,Yalong Ma,Xianbing Ji,Jizhong Ma,Wenli Zhang,Laizhou Song

In the study, the waste polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were recovered and the obtained resin powders by a solvent recovery method were employed for the fabrication of a novel PVDF-based tribological composite. Herein, a new strategy was developed for applying the waste PVDF membranes to fabricate a self-lubricant composite, where the recycled PVDF powders acted as the polymer matrix and microcapsules with the configuration of polysulfone (PSF) capsuling lubricant oil (PAO) served as the filler. The morphologies, crystal phases, chemical components and groups as well as thermal stabilities of fabricated PAO@PSF/PVDF composites were characterized, and the self-lubricating and wear properties of fabricated composites were tested under the dry sliding condition using a ball-on-disc configuration. Experimental results suggest that the PAO@PSF/PVDF composite with an addition of 20 wt% PAO@PSF microcapsules exhibits the best tribological properties, in view of the lowest friction coefficient (0.077) and the smallest wear rate (2.34 × 10 −15 m 3 /Nm). The incorporation of PAO@PSF microcapsules greatly reduces the friction coefficient of PVDF polymer. The tribological properties of fabricated PAO@PSF/PVDF composite will be expectable to that of the PVDF polymer with the dripping presence of lubricating oil.

Novel application of Zn-containing Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks in promoting the vulcanization and mechanical properties of natural rubber composites

Xing Tian,Jie Hu,Xin Sun,Yongxin Duan,Min Jiang

Three kinds of Zn-containing Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (Zn-ZIFs, including ZIF-8, ZIF-11 and ZIF-14) based on the zinc ions coordinating with different imidazolate ligands were added into the natural rubber (NR) using the DM and TMTD binary accelerators system, respectively. The influences of Zn-ZIFs on the sulfur vulcanization behaviors and mechanical properties of NR matrix were evaluated. The results indicated that the addition of ZIF-8 or ZIF-14 could realize the fast vulcanization of NR at 130°C (the ordinary vulcanization temperature of NR is above 150°C), while ZIF-11 did not show the obvious accelerating performance. Amongst the three Zn-ZIFs, ZIF-8 benefited NR matrix for the acquirement of the highest tensile strength and the largest crosslinking density. As an optimal additive, ZIF-8 with 0.6 phr distinctly improved the physical-mechanical, thermo-oxidative aging resistance and dynamic mechanical properties of NR composites. It proved that Zn atom and its coordination porous network in Zn-ZIFs played synergistic effects in accelerating vulcanization and enhancing mechanical properties of NR matrix besides its role of reinforcement filler. Then the above ZIF-8/DM/TMTD vulcanization system was used to prepare the UHMWPE fibers/NR composites. The mechanical properties of the UHMWPE/NR composites were significantly improved in contrast to the pure NR matrix.

Preparation of flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam with bio-based phosphorus-containing polyols and expandable graphite

Rong Yang,Guozhang Gu,Mengdi Li,Jinchun Li

In the last decades, rigid polyurethane foam has focused on increasing renewable components and enhancing flame retardancy due to sustainable development and fire safety requirements. Herein, we report a bio-based phosphorus-containing polyester polyol (PMCP) that is synthesized with dimethyl methylphosphonate, malic acid, citric acid, and 1,6-hexanediol in one pot. The hydroxyl value of PMCP is 485 ~ 512 mg KOH/g. As a result, it can be used as the sole polyol in the production of RPUF. Moreover, expandable graphite (EG) was incorporated into RPUF-PMCP20 to enhance flame retardance. The limited oxygen index of RPUF increases from 18.3% to 24.0% with the rise in DMMP moiety in PMCP. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) significantly decreases from 264.2 to 129 kW/m 2 . Meanwhile, the time to ignition increases from 5 to 18 s. The flame retardant mechanism indicated that PMCP plays a dual role in the gaseous and condensed phases. The addition of EG exhibits an excellent blocking effect. The LOI increases from 22.5% to 27.3% with increasing EG content. In addition, both the PHRR and smoke release rate of RPUF are suppressed by incorporating EG.

A sandwich-structure, low-temperature sensitive and recyclable liquid metal organic hydrogel for a wearable strain sensor

Yiwei Dong,Chen Wang,Zhirui Hu,Shujuan Mao,Xiaotong Wei,Yueqing Fu,Jie Li,Jing Han

Currently, sensors based on hydrogels are less sensitive at low temperatures, and discarded sensors are prone to generate e-waste. Thus, it is challenging to design and prepare novel hydrogels with good properties for wearable sensors. Herein, we report a sandwich-structure liquid metal organic hydrogel with low-temperature sensitive, recyclable and multiple sensation properties. Liquid metal (LM)/cross-linked chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CHACC) composite is prepared by evaporating ethanol and water co-solvent as the core layer. CHACC is used as the top and the bottom layer respectively. The optimal performance of the organic hydrogel is obtained when the volume ratio of ethanol to water is 1:3. The LM/CHACC organic hydrogel exhibits excellent stretchability (strain: 428.37%). Importantly, it has fast responsiveness, recyclability and excellent low-temperature sensitivity (GF = 8.29) at −20°C. The sensors possess stress-temperature sensation with high sensitivity. Moreover, LM as the conductive filler is recyclable under acidic conditions. We demonstrate the functionality of the LM/CHACC organic hydrogel to detect human joint movements and fine movements at low temperatures. It is anticipated to open up new sensing applications based on LM organic hydrogel-based wearable sensors.

Improving the wet adhesive bonding of bamboo urea-formaldehyde adhesive using styrene acrylate by controlling monomer ratios

Sai Wu,Lulu Liang,Furong Chen,Zheng Yang,Yu Zheng,Yitian Wu,Lanze Li,Gaobo Lou,Juntao Dai,Yajun Pang,Hao Chen,Qun Fang,Zhehong Shen

The utilization of bamboo resources can significantly alleviate the wood shortage and facilitate CO 2 neutralization. However, the adhesive bonding performance of bamboo is not ideal, which greatly limits its application. Therefore, the biggest challenge is to explore a simple and effective method to enhance the bonding between bamboo and adhesive. In this study, we synthesized three butyl acrylate-styrene (BS) emulsions with different monomer ratios and incorporated them into urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins to prepare butyl acrylate-styrene modified urea-formaldehyde (BUF) adhesives. Results show that BS emulsion not only prolongs the workability time of UF adhesives (95 s–108 s), but also reduces the free formaldehyde content (0.38%–0.26%). Specifically, BS emulsion with the highest hard/soft monomer ratio makes BUF adhesive the lowest activation energy, showing the accelerated curing reaction. Specifically, the prepared laminated bamboo-veneer lumber (LBVL) exhibits the best wet-bonding strength and meets the Chinese National Standard, suggesting that BS emulsion with a higher hard/soft monomer ratio can enhance bonding performance. Thus, this efficient method can not only enhance various adhesive properties, but also improves the bonding performance on LVBL, which can greatly ease the shortage of wood resources and speed up the development of the bamboo industry.

Preparation and profile control evaluation of core-shell structure and surface-hydrophobic modified polyacrylamide microsphere

Qihai Wang,Bin Chen,Xiujun Wang,Yifan Wang,Weixin Hu,Ming Duan,Shenwen Fang

Polyacrylamide (PAM) microsphere has been widely used in the field of profile control to reduce water cut in heterogeneous reservoirs. However, its mechanical strength and plugging ability are still needed to be improved. In this paper, a core-shell structure and surface-hydrophobic polyacrylamide M-P(AM-PEP) microsphere was prepared by using acrylamide (AM), block polyether macro monomer (PEP) and modified SiO 2 with double bond on the surface as monomers through dispersion polymerization. After the optimization of synthesis conditions, the results of SEM and TEM confirmed that M-P(AM-PEP) microsphere had the nano-scale spherical shape and the inorganic core/polymer shell structure, while the contact angle test results showed that M-P(AM-PEP) microsphere had the surface-hydrophobicity. Swelling experiments presented that the size of M-P(AM-PEP) microsphere can be increased by 6 times and had obvious self-gathering behavior. The inorganic core and self-gathering behavior are helpful for improving mechanical strength and plugging ability of PAM microsphere, respectively. Profile control and oil recovery improvement experiment showed that injecting 0.1 PV M-P(AM-PEP) microsphere can decrease the water cut and increase the oil recovery of 17.95%. This new microsphere could be an efficient technology for the profile control in the heterogeneous reservoir.

A facile method for synthesis of novel phenyl phosphates flame retardants and their application in epoxy resin

Yong Guo,Hu Rong,Yuan Yu,Tingting Chen,Zhongwei Chen,Yifan Suo,Qingwu Zhang,Changxin Li,Juncheng Jiang

Piperazinyl phenyl phosphate (PPOP) and 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethyl phenyl phosphate (DPOA) containing phosphorus and nitrogen elements as flame retardants applied for epoxy resin (EP) were successfully synthesized, and substantiated by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), 1 H and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and elemental analysis (EA). The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the EP composites with 3 wt% of PPOP and DPOA attained 33.6% and 34.2%, both acquired the UL-94 V-0 rating, respectively. The peak of heat release rate (pHRR), the total heat release (THR) and the total smoke production (TSP) of EP/PPOP-1 decreased by 21.0%, 25.6%, and 18.7%, respectively. For EP/DPOA-1, the pHRR, THR, and TSP were brought down by 23.5%, 21.8%, and 26.4%, respectively. Flame-retardant mechanisms were explicitly evaluated by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis-infrared spectrometry (TG-IR). This proposed method not only could produce efficient flame retardant for EP but provide new ideas for replacing existing halogenated flame retardants.

Preparation and properties of cellulose nanofibers/α-zirconium phosphate nanosheets composite polyvinyl alcohol ion-conductive organohydrogel and its application in strain sensors

Xinle Liu,Juhua Qin,Jing Wang,Yipeng Chen,Guohao Miao,Junping Zheng,Xiaofei Liu

The poor mechanical and electrical properties and single function of conventional conductive hydrogels severely limit their application in flexible sensors. Here, a multifunctional nanomaterial composite high-strength hydrogel strain sensor was prepared by incorporating α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) nanosheets with hydroxyl functional groups on the surface and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)matrix simultaneously, using a binary glycerol/water solution as the dispersion medium and a strategy of cyclic freeze–thawing followed by sodium chloride immersion. The experiments showed that CNFs and α-ZrP nanosheets can form hydrogen bonding interactions with PVA chains, which can synergistically improve the mechanical and electrical properties of the gels with little effect on its transparency, and the tensile strength and elongation at break of the gels can reach 2.42 MPa and 541%, respectively, and the ionic conductivity exceeds 7.65 mS/cm, while possessing a transmission rate of 87% at 600 nm visible light wavelength. In addition, the introduction of glycerol imparts the gel with remodeling, anti-freezing, and long-term stability. As a strain sensor, it has a linear sensing range of 0%–350% and high sensitivity (GF = 2.46), and the sensing gloves prepared based on it can accurately and stably recognize letters written by hand.
