Uniform Al2O3 coating for improved cycling stability of O3-type sodium-ion batteries cathode: Mechanisms and performance insights

Xiaohan Zhao,Qi Liu,Wenxiu He,Daobin Mu,Li Li,Renjie Chen,Feng Wu

Low-cost sodium-ion batteries have significant potential in large-scale energy storage applications owing to the abundant sodium reserves. Despite O3-type layered transition metal oxide cathode materials show the high energy density and initial coulombic efficiency, their structural instability and severe interface side reactions lead to a decline in cycling performance, posing notable challenges and obstacles to their large-scale commercialization. In this study, we propose a simple, direct, and practical strategy to coat the O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode material surface with a protective Al 2 O 3 layer using Al(OH) 3 as the aluminum source. This method effectively suppresses the deleterious degradation of the bulk phases and surface during cycling, thereby improving the electrochemical performance of the material. It is proved that harmful decomposition of the electrolyte on the material's surface is reduced, and the interface stability is enhanced by characterization techniques such as XRD , SEM-EDS, TEM, and XPS . Stress and strain induced by sodium ion insertion and extraction, which cause particle fracture , are effectively alleviated by the rigid coating, improving the structural degradation in the near-surface region. The material with 0.5 wt% coating exhibits a capacity retention of 60.7 % (18.4 % higher than the uncoated sample) after 200 cycles at 1C rate and shows a lower interfacial transfer impedance. It is guided for optimizing the cycling stability of layered oxide cathode materials to the development of sodium ion battery technologies.

Effects of Modified Al2O3-Decorated Ionic Liquid on the Mechanical Properties and Impact Resistance of a Polyurethane Elastomer

Fan Hu,Jun Gao,Biao Zhang,Fugang Qi,Nie Zhao,Xiaoping Ouyang

In this work, a new composite material with excellent dynamic impact resistance and outstanding quasi-static mechanical properties was synthesized. The composite material is composed of a polyurethane elastomer and a novel nano-polymer. The nano-polymer was composed of silane coupling agent-modified alumina microspheres and functionalized ionic liquids by double bond polymerization. The universal testing machine and split Hopkinson pressure bar were used to characterize the compression behavior, strength and energy absorption of the composite materials under static and dynamic conditions. Additionally, the comprehensive mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomer with different nano-polymer loadings (0.5–2.5 wt.%) were studied. The results show that whether it was static compression or dynamic impact, the polyurethane elastomer with 1% nano-polymer had the best performance. For the composite material with the best properties, its compressive yield strength under the static compression was about 61.13% higher than that of the pure polyurethane elastomer, and its energy absorption of dynamic impacts was also increased by about 15.53%. Moreover, the shape memory effect was very good (shape recovery is approximately 95%), and the microscopic damage degree was relatively small. This shows that the composite material with the best properties can withstand high compression loads and high-speed impacts. The developed composite material is a promising one for materials science and engineering, especially for protection against compression and impacts. Keywords:impact resistance;ionic liquid;nano-Al2O3;polyurethane elastomer

Core-shell Pd@CeO2/γ‐Al2O3 catalysts: Boosting efficiency and durability in stoichiometric natural gas vehicle exhaust treatment

Run Pan,Abubakar Yusuf,Chengjun Wang,Jianrong Li,Zhiyu Xiao,Shuai Liu,Yidong Zhong,Yong Ren,Zheng Wang,Hainam Do,John L. Zhou,George Zheng Chen,Jun He

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) offer significant environmental advantages by reducing pollutant emissions, but effective exhaust treatment remains a challenge due to high methane emissions and catalyst deactivation over time. This study introduces a core-shell Pd@CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 three-way catalyst (TWC) designed to enhance the efficiency and durability of NGV exhaust treatment. The core-shell structure significantly improves catalytic performance. The optimized Pd@Ce/Al (S-500) catalyst demonstrates excellent low-temperature activity, with T 50 values of 336 °C for CH 4 and 397 °C for NO. It also achieves remarkable reductions of 113 and 177 °C in the T 90 for CH 4 and NO conversion, respectively, compared to the non-core-shell counterpart, Pd-Ce/Al (S-500). Characterizations reveal enhanced metal-support interactions, increased oxygen vacancies, and optimized Pd-CeO 2 interfaces as key active sites. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the core-shell structure facilitates electron transfer at Pd-CeO 2 interfaces and lowers energy barriers for three-way reactions, enhancing catalytic efficiency. Notably, the core-shell Pd@Ce/Al (S-500) catalyst maintains high conversion efficiency for CH 4 and NO, with only slight losses (5.5% and 6.6%, respectively) over a 100-h time-on-stream stability test, following 16 h of harsh hydrothermal aging at 800 °C, showcasing its long-term stability. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the role of the core-shell Pd@CeO 2 structure in Pd-based TWCs and offer valuable insights for designing durable and efficient catalysts to meet the stringent emission standards of NGVs.

One-step synthesis of Al2O3/Al-doped g-C3N4 heterostructures for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution and CO2 reduction

Jawad Ahmad Jrar,Tao Sunle,Muhammad Bilal,Faheem K. Butt,Alauddin,Muhammad Faizan,Imed Boukhris,Xiaozhi Wang,Yongcai Zhang,Jianhua Hou

Photocatalytic water splitting and CO 2 reduction offer renewable pathways for generating green fuels. Nevertheless, traditional photocatalysts are often limited by rapid electron-hole recombination. To address this difficulty, we devised a one-step thermal calcination method that concurrently doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) with aluminum and generates Al 2 O 3 in situ, an Al-doped g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction. Upon excitation by visible light, photo-excited electrons in Al-doped g-C 3 N 4 transfer to the surface Al 2 O 3 nano domains, which act as an electron sink due to their defective and reduced bandgap structure, and holes remain on g-C 3 N 4 . The effective charge separation is facilitated by interfacial band bending and the consequent internal electric field at the heterojunction that collectively inhibits electron-hole recombination and extends charge-carrier lifetimes for redox processes. The Al-doped g-C 3 N 4 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst attains a hydrogen evolution rate 9.4 times greater and a CO 2 reduction rate 6.5 folds greater than pristine CN when exposed to visible-light illumination. The improvement in performance highlights the capability of our single-step designed photocatalyst for solar-driven hydrogen production and CO 2 -to-fuel conversion, supporting the goal of carbon-neutral fuels and the progress of renewable green energy solutions.

Simultaneous enhancement of graphene dispersion and interfacial bonding in aluminum-graphene composites via in situ formation of Al2O3

Qiuhong Yuan,Jingpeng Xiong,Lin Liao,Qiliang Zhang,Zhiwen Qiu,Guo-Hua Zhou

Well dispersed graphene and good interfacial bonding are crucial for the synthesis of aluminum (Al)-based composites with high performance. To achieve this goal, graphene oxide (GO) was used to fabricate Al-RGO (reduced GO) composites via the in-situ formation of Al 2 O 3 . Detailed microstructure analyses revealed two forms of interface structures present in the as-extruded material, specifically RGO/γ-Al 2 O 3 /Al and RGO/amorphous-Al 2 O 3 /Al, which formed from interfacial reactions between GO and the Al metal. The as-generated Al 2 O 3 (γ/amorphous) phases substantially improved the interface bond between RGO and the Al matrix. Meanwhile, RGO nanosheets were uniformly dispersed within the Al matrix without evident structural degradation. As a result, the incorporated RGO notably improved the mechanical properties of the composite, resulting in a 216.2% increase in yield strength and a 65.2% increase in microhardness for the composite containing 0.5 wt% GO compared to the pure Al. These findings provide a viable route into the synthesis of Al-graphene composites with high performance.

Stabilization of Al2O3 with Al-O-P structure in HF atmosphere for dehydrofluorination reactions with unexpected catalyst lifetime

Bing Liu,Hong Yang,Jinbin Xu,Minxue Deng,Yongbo Xiong,Sihui Wu,Zhanwang Li,Yuncong Xu,Mingyue Wang,Wenfeng Han

Stabilizing metastable active centers under harsh reaction conditions represents a significant challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. The F-Al-O species exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the gas-phase dehydrofluorination of potent greenhouse gas hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to produce hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs). However, this species is prone to transform into the F-Al-F configuration via excessive fluorination, subsequently leading to catalyst deactivation because of coke deposition. To address this issue, we present a viable strategy for stabilizing the metastable active centers. Al 2 O 3 doped with boron (B), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) was synthesized via the sol-gel method. Results demonstrate that in the dehydrofluorination of HFC-245fa, the phosphorus-doped Al 2 O 3 catalyst (P-Al 2 O 3 ) outperforms its boron- and sulfur-doped counterparts, achieving a conversion of 87% compared to 68% and 49%, respectively. The incorporation of P significantly alters the coordination environment of Al 3 + within the Al 2 O 3 lattice, forming O-Al-O-P bonding configurations. During the subsequent dehydrofluorination reaction, these structures undergo fluorination to yield HF-resistant F-Al-O-P species. This process effectively impedes the deep fluorination of Al 2 O 3 into AlF 3 , thereby stabilizing the metastable F-Al-O active centers. Furthermore, this anti-fluorination mechanism significantly suppresses catalyst coking and prevents pore structure collapse. In the dehydrofluorination of HFC-245fa to HFO-1234ze, the P-Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved a high conversion of 87%, representing an approximately threefold enhancement over conventional Al 2 O 3 , and no significant deactivation trend was observed after 500 h of reaction. This work provides a fundamental understanding of stabilizing metastable active centers and paves a practical pathway for designing robust catalysts for reactions under corrosive atmospheres.

Construction of γ-Al2O3 (100) crystal planes based on octanol directional transmission and hydrogen bond adsorption in microchannels

Tianyi Huang,Chenxian Zhao,Danyang Zhao,Yujun Wang,Guangsheng Luo

The exposure of crystal planes is a crucial determinant of support activity and effective metal anchoring in catalysis. Herein, we develop an efficient process for designing the crystal planes of alumina microspheres. The mechanism involves hydrogen bond adsorption between octanol and boehmite, alongside the hindrance effect of hydrophobic carbon chains on hydration layer, to achieve effective exposure of the γ-Al 2 O 3 (100) crystal plane. HRTEM and 27 Al NMR analyses confirm that the proportion of exposed γ-Al 2 O 3 (100) plane increases to 59% following octanol directional adsorption. Moreover, microfluidic field measurements demonstrate that the microchannel enhances mass transfer to facilitate octanol directional transmission and hydrogen bond adsorption within the sol droplet. This approach ultimately enables integrated reshaping of alumina microspheres with a 2.7-fold increase in the γ-Al 2 O 3 (100) plane exposure. This study provides an effective operational paradigm for achieving support crystal plane exposure in industrial applications.

Molecular insight into Al2O3 catalysts for blast furnace gas purification: K coordination and hierarchical pore enhanced COS hydrolysis

Yuting Lin,Yuran Li,Shining Wang,Jianshan Wang,Yanbin Cui,Tingyu Zhu

Blast furnace gas as a vital secondary energy in iron and steel industry, necessitates efficient removal of carbonyl sulfide (COS) to realize clean high-value utilization. However, conventional Al 2 O 3 catalysts suffer from low hydrolytic activity and poor sulfur resistance, limiting their industrial application. This work systematically elucidates the mechanisms of K coordination and hierarchical pore on COS hydrolysis. EXAFS and DFT reveal that appropriate K doping induces highly dispersed K species with four-coordinated K species featuring K-O-Al bonds, which increase the electron cloud density of O atom in surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) and significantly enhance the COS conversion by over 50%. For hierarchical pore catalysts, the introduction of expanding agent breaks the dense stacking of alumina particles, exposes more Al atoms and increases [AlO 6 ] coordination content, which synergistically enriches active -OH sites. More importantly, the interconnected hierarchical porous channels accelerate gaseous H 2 S desorption and effectively mitigate surface sulfur deposition, enabling the catalysts to maintain over 90% COS conversion for 8 h. This work provides atomic-level insights into K coordination and hierarchical pore, offering a rational strategy for designing high-efficiency and sulfur-resistant COS hydrolysis catalysts for blast furnace gas purification.

Catalytic ozonation of hard COD in coking wastewater with Fe2O3/Al2O3-SiC: From catalyst design to industrial application

Wei Shi,Xiaojing Liu,Yulei Liu,Dong Li,Xili Tong,Jun Ma,Lu Wang

Development of robust, reactive, and inexpensive catalyst for pollutants abatement with catalytic ozonation is of great significance. Herein, the effect of a robust and easy-recovery catalyst, Fe 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 -SiC, for the catalytic ozonation of hardly biodegradable COD (hard COD) in coking wastewater had been explored. Al-O-Si bond formed on modified SiC through the substitution of hydrogen in surficial Si-OH groups by Al 3+ . The Lewis acid sites improved the adsorption of ozone and facilitated the formation of ·OH and O 2 · − . For coking wastewater treatment , the removal ratio of hard COD and the generation speed of hydroxyl radical (R ct ) in the catalytic ozonation process were 71% and 253% higher than those in the ozonation group, respectively. Ozone utilization increased from 0.44 g COD removed/g O 3 in the ozonation group to 1.42 g COD removed/g O 3 in the Fe 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 -SiC catalytic ozonation group. In a full-scale application, Fe 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 -SiC catalytic ozonation decreased the consumption of O 3 to 60 mg L −1 and decreased the operation cost by 50%. These results provided an approachable way for sharing the extraordinary capacity of ozone for contaminants remediation in industrial applications.

Fabrication of sheet-like HZSM-5 zeolites with various SiO2/Al2O3 and process optimization in hexane catalytic cracking

Jiale Zhu,Siyan Yan,Guohao Xu,Xuedong Zhu,Fan Yang

A variety of HZSM-5 zeolites with different b-axis thicknesses and SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 were fabricated by simply modifying urea content and Al source feeding in the initial gel, respectively. Multiple characterization technologies including XRD , SEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, NH 3 -TPD and Py-IR were employed to investigate physicochemical properties of these samples and the possible crystallization mechanism was proposed that adsorption of urea molecules on (010) facet was the key factor for fabricating thin-sheet HZSM-5 zeolites. The results of hexane cracking reaction revealed that the selectivities of light olefins reached 46.5% when controlling b-axis thickness to 340 nm, exceeding the control sample by 12.2%. Furthermore, the effect of SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 under this b-axis thickness was also investigated and concluded that keeping SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 to 200 could exhibit the optimum catalytic performance with the conversion of 95.5% and light olefins selectivities of 56.7%. The reaction conditions were optimized to be 600 °C at the N 2 flow rate of 25 mL/min and WHSV of 3 h −1 to arouse the best performance. Under this condition, the distribution of ethene and propene was quite close to that of thermodynamic equilibrium. Based on these results, the primary and secondary products were uncovered, and further the reaction pathway of hexane cracking was disclosed. This new strategy to synthesize sheet-like catalysts for enhancing the catalytic properties in hexane cracking also laid a solid foundation for the study of the catalysts on light oil cracking in industry.

Investigation of mixed hBN/Al2O3 nanoparticles as additives on grease performance in rolling bearing under limited lubricant supply

Can Wu,Yuyang Hong,Jing Ni,Paul D. Teal,Lidan Yao,Xinglin Li

Grease plays an important role in reducing friction and wear of rolling bearings and improving their service life and reliability. However, increasing attention is being paid to the environmental pollution caused by discarded grease. In this paper, calcium sulfonate complex grease (CSCG) was prepared by using green raw materials, namely poly-alpha-olefin oil as the base oil and complex calcium sulfonate soap as thickener . In order to improve the lubrication and damping performance of the grease, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and nano-Al 2 O 3 , which have the potential to replace toxic additives, are mixed into the grease in different mass proportions. The thickener structure of each grease was characterized and analyzed. According to the bearing vibration and life of the two key performance indicators, four-ball tests and bearing vibration tests under limited lubricant supply (LLS) were performed. The results show that CSCG with 0.75 wt% hBN and 0.25 wt% Al 2 O 3 (BN75AL25) has the best tribological and vibration suppression performance. The mean friction coefficient decreased by 11.3%, the wear scar diameter decreased by 6.1%, and the worn surface morphology improved significantly compared with CSCG. The frequency domain analysis showed that high, medium and low frequency vibrations were suppressed by 19%, 11.7% and 16.4%, respectively. In conclusion, BN75AL25 has the potential to become a green high-performance grease under LLS, which is worth further research and exploration.

The critical role of aggregate microstructure in thermal shock resistance and slag resistance of Al2O3–SiC–C castable

Jiuhong Ma,Huizhong Zhao,Jun Yu,Han Zhang,Yichong Li,Lida Shi,Yi Zhao,Jian He

In this study, four types of commercial tabular corundum were selected as aggregates, and four Al 2 O 3 –SiC–C castables were prepared under same conditions. The microstructure characteristics of the aggregates were observed. The thermal shock resistance and slag resistance mechanism were evaluated. Dendritic pores were proven to be beneficial for relieving and guiding thermal stress. According to the Lobe method, the dendritic pores provided the aggregates with a higher thermal conductivity and better thermal stability than the circular pores. The role of the aggregate microstructure in resisting slag erosion was discussed through thermodynamic and kinetic analyses. The presence of dendritic pores and a small neck size led to a faster dissolution rate during the slag erosion process. At the same time, the dissolution rate and dissolution amount increased, resulting in the faster supersaturation of the slag. Based on Ostwald's supersaturation theory, a thicker spinel isolation layer would be precipitated on the inner walls of the slag erosion path, thereby preventing the further erosion of the slag.
