Ni–M/SiO2 with different binary metals M (M = Ce, Co, Sn, Fe) prepared by an incipient impregnation method was used in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of low-temperature coal tar distillate, which is rich in phenolic compounds. p-Cresol, as a model compound of the distillate, was used to evaluate the activity and selectivity of BTX products on the series of reduced Ni–M/SiO2 catalysts in a fixed bed reactor. The properties of the catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, ICP-AES, XRD, H2-TPR, and XPS. Benzene and toluene as the direct deoxygenation (DDO) products and cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane as the hydrogenolysis (HYD) products were detected to evaluate the selectivity of the path in the deoxygenation process. In this series of catalysts, the order of reactivity was Ni–Ce > Ni–Sn > Ni–Co > Ni–Fe > monometallic Ni. Meanwhile, the addition of Ce and Co loaded in the Lewis acid sites of the catalyst affected the electron distribution of nickel atom and its atomic arrangement on the surface of the carrier. Compared to monometallic Ni, the DDO path become dominant on Ni–Ce and Ni–Co and the selectivity for BTX products increased from 58.8% to 77.4% and 71.1%, respectively. The binary metal Sn, unlike the former two metals, formed a Ni3Sn crystal form with Ni, which resulted in significant enhancement of the HYD path while obviously increasing the reactivity.

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) are ubiquitously detected in water matrices, arousing growing concern. Effective abatement of these toxic environmental contaminants is challenging but of great importance. Ce-based MOFs have been considered novel metal–organic framework (MOFs)-based photocatalysts in water treatment. However, limited light absorption ability, fast recombination of photogenerated carriers, and water stability limited the further application. Here, the UiO-66 (Ce) was successfully constructed onto the surface of a series of graphene oxide (GO) (1 mg ∼ 7.5 mg) in situ. GO with oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs) increased the adsorption (∼45 %) of the trace amount of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (200 μg/L) over the interfaces and enhanced the degradation efficiency of SMX. The composite with the optimal ratio (GO@ UiO-66 (Ce)-5) significantly increased the charge separation ability and produced a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS). •O 2 – was proved to be the major driving reactive substance for SMX degradation with the calculated steady-state concentration of 2.5 × 10 -9 M (∼1.37 times higher with bubbled oxygen), which is much higher than that of detected •OH (1.62 × 10 -14 ). Major operational parameters including dissolved oxygen, initial solution pH, and catalyst dosages were investigated systematically. Several intermediates were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). By choosing the strategy, MOFs were closely bonded to the surface of the GO matrix, making the leakage of Ce ions inhibited obviously (∼3 times) in the water treatment process. This study offers useful guidance for improving the performance of existing photocatalytic materials for PhACs removal.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are used to derive inorganic material, which is an effective way to achieve high performance electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, a novel orthorhombic bimetallic organic framework, [ZnCe(L 7 )·2H 2 O]n (termed as ZnCeL, L = 5-aminoisophthalic acid) with 3D open framework was synthesized via a simple solvothermal reaction. Then ZnSe/CeO 2 /RGO was successfully fabricated via pyrolysis and selenization of ZnCeL and graphene oxide (RGO) composites. In the hybrid, ZnSe with high theoretical specific capacity and CeO 2 with electrocatalytic property are wrapped by conductive RGO. Herein, ZnSe/CeO 2 /RGO displays excellent sodium and lithium-storage performances. It reveals a sodium storage capacity of 113.2 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . Meanwhile, ZnSe/CeO 2 /RGO as an anode for LIBs delivers a reversible capacity of 675 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 200 cycles. The electrochemical kinetic analysis reveals that the redox reactions are dominated by pseudocapacitive behavior. The excellent performance reveals a bright prospect of the bimetallic organic frameworks derived inorganic material for energy storage.

Ferroelectric materials are ideal for self-powered sensors in Internet of Things (IoT) and high-precision detection systems due to their excellent polarization properties. Compatibility with miniaturization, high-density systems, and complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes is crucial for their widespread adoption. HfO 2 -based ferroelectric films show potential in self-powered pyroelectric sensors as their thinness enables effective temperature and light detection. However, the disordered ferroelectric domain distribution limits their pyroelectric performance and hampers the development of highly integrated self-powered pyroelectric devices. This report investigates the temperature and light detection capabilities of Ce-doped HfO 2 ferroelectric films, which exhibit as-grown spontaneous polarization in the downward direction, making them a promising option for self-powered pyroelectric sensors. The findings provide robust evidence that the introduction of a temperature gradient significantly enhances pyroelectricity. In addition, their applications in the detection of hot/cold wind and breathing have been proved. Notably, the 30 nm thick Ce-doped HfO 2 ferroelectric film has a high pyroelectric coefficient of about 894.7 μC·m −2 ·K −1 and enables high-precision detection of changes in temperature of 0.1 K. This study highlights the potential application of HfO 2 -based ferroelectric films in self-powered sensors with temperature and light detection capabilities, making them a promising candidate for future IoT-based systems and high-precision detection systems.

Conversion of biomass tar to useful hydrogen-rich syngas will solve environmental issues related to tar emission as well as increase the overall efficiency of biomass conversion . There are various catalysts to achieve that. In this study, La 1-x Ce x Ni 0.8 Fe 0 . 2 O 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) is selected, and acetic acid has been used as a biomass tar model. Fixed-bed reactor was used for this investigation, while the catalyst characterization has been done mainly by X-ray Adsorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), CO 2 -temperature programmed desorption (TPD). The results showed that La 0 . 8 Ce 0 . 2 Ni 0 . 8 Fe 0 . 2 O 3 has the highest acetic acid conversion (68.7%) and hydrogen yield (63.6%). Which is attributed to its more catalytic defect, stable structure and stronger basicity . Furthermore, to express more comprehensively on tar models, La 0 . 8 Ce 0 . 2 Ni 0 . 8 Fe 0 . 2 O 3 were investigated with blends of acetic acid and acetone with different mole ratios (1:0, 4:1, 3:2, 2:3, 1:4 and 0:1) in temperature ranges (500 °C–900 °C), and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV = 12.02 h −1 -15.63 h −1 ). The highest carbon conversion (85.7%) and hydrogen yield (88.5%) were obtained at 600 °C, mole ratio = 4:1, and WHSV = 14.43 h −1 . It is noted that the result of the blend was better; however, based on in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy ( in-situ DRIFTS) investigation, the enhancement ascribed to inhibition of ketonization reaction was occurred with pure acetic acid. In addition, high reaction temperature and weight hourly space velocity decrease the catalytic activity by accelerating sub-reaction and graphitization coke deposition. In a word, La 0 . 8 Ce 0 . 2 Ni 0 . 8 Fe 0 . 2 O 3 catalyst shows good performance with hydrogen yield over 70% during 1440 min at optimum conditions.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a key reactive oxygen species in physiological and pathological processes, demands highly sensitive detection for biological and biomedical research, yet developing electrocatalytic materials with high sensitivity, low detection limit, and excellent stability remains a challenge. Herein, a Fe−C@Fe/Ce−C bilayer heterojunction composite was fabricated for H 2 O 2 detection. Benefiting from its unique heterojunction architecture and synergistic Fe/Ce/carbon interactions, the as-prepared nanocomposite exhibits the exceptional H 2 O 2 sensing performance, with a wide linear range of 0.5−6000 µM, a high sensitivity of 490.5 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 , a low detection limit of 0.12 µM, excellent anti-interference selectivity against common biological interferents, and outstanding long-term stability with no obvious performance variation after 11 days of continuous testing. The robust built-in electric field arising from the heterojunction facilitates interfacial charge transfer and accelerates H 2 O 2 activation, boosting sensing behavior. Furthermore, the flexible electrochemical sensor was fabricated via the screen-printing technology, which enables reliable real-time monitoring of intracellular H 2 O 2 released from HeLa cells, showing great potential for biological sensing. This work provides a promising design strategy for high-performance flexible electrochemical sensors and deepens the understanding of heterojunction and built-in electric field roles in electrocatalytic sensing systems.

Exploring high-performance birefringent crystals holds
paramount
significance in modern optics, yet traditional candidates generally
struggle to reconcile substantial birefringence with broad spectral
transparency. To circumvent this long-standing bottleneck, a synergistic
multifunctional-group assembly strategy has been devised to guide
the rational design of birefringent crystals. Correspondingly, driven
by lanthanide coordination and hydrogen bonding, two kinds of π-conjugated
units were successfully incorporated into a new birefringent crystal,
Ce(2,2 ′ -bipyridyl) 3 (SCN) 3 . Synthesized
via a facile solution evaporation method, Ce(2,2 ′ -bipyridyl) 3 (SCN) 3 was characterized by a large birefringence
of 0.18@546 nm, broad transmission windows (nearly spanning 0.445–25
μm), and moderate thermal stability (up to 270 ° C), making
it favorable for practical applications.

Construct PtCu/CeO 2 heterojunction to resolve alkaline HER activity-stability trade-off dilemma. • Form strong Pt-O-Ce interfacial bonds to restrain Pt oxidation and metal leaching. • CeO 2 serves as efficient promoter to drastically accelerate water dissociation step of alkaline HER. • Assembled AEMWE cell delivers 2500 h ultra-long stability at industrial current density. The persistent activity-stability trade-off in electrocatalysts, driven by the dynamic evolution of active sites, severely limits the practical application of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). Herein, we construct a robust PtCu/CeO 2 heterostructure that simultaneously achieves superior activity and long-term durability for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalyst exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 10 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 23.2 mV dec −1 , significantly outperforming conventional Pt/Ni(OH) 2 and Pt/C electrodes. In a full AEMWE cell, the PtCu/CeO 2 ||NiFe LDH system requires only 1.71 V to reach 1 A cm −2 and maintains stable operation for 2500 h with negligible decay, ranking it among the best-performing alkaline HER catalysts. Mechanistically, Cu alloying optimizes the hydrogen adsorption energy of Pt, while CeO 2 acts as an effective water dissociation promoter to accelerate the overall reaction kinetics. Moreover, strong Pt-O-Ce interfacial bonding between the thermodynamically stable CeO 2 and PtCu alloy, together with significant hybridization of Pt 5d/Cu 3d and Ce 4 f/O 2p orbitals, effectively suppresses the dissolution and oxidation of Pt sites. thereby enhancing the durability of the catalyst under high-current-density operation. This work offers a viable strategy to overcome the activity-stability dilemma in HER catalysts for industrial AEMWE. To address the inherent microporosity and inadequate long-term corrosion protection capacity of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) ceramic coatings deposited on 6063 aluminum alloy substrates, a hierarchical Ce-doped PEO/h-BN/diamondlike carbon (DLC) composite coating architecture was fabricated via combined hydrothermal pore sealing and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) post treatment routes. The microstructure, chemical composition, and corrosion behavior of the coatings were systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results demonstrated that hydrothermal treatment effectively introduced h-BN nanosheets into discharge channels and the micropores of the Ce-doped PEO coating. XPS, Raman, and FT-IR analyses confirmed the successful incorporation of h-BN while preserving its characteristic layered structure. Subsequently, a continuous DLC film containing typical sp 2 /sp 3 hybridized carbon bonds was successfully deposited by PECVD. Among all tested processing parameter combinations, the composite coating modified with 1 g L −1 h-BN hydrothermal sealing followed by 60 min PECVD deposition delivered optimal comprehensive anticorrosion performance, featured by a minimum corrosion current density of 1.76 × 10 −9 A cm −2 and the highest impedance response in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The significantly improved anticorrosion performance originates from the dual synergistic barrier effect derived from h-BN nanosheet pore plugging and the dense DLC outer capping layer. Specifically, h-BN nanosheets effectively reduced pore connectivity and prolonged the diffusion path of corrosive species, whereas the dense DLC overlayer served as additional physical barrier that suppressed electrolyte penetration and interfacial charge transfer. This study provides valuable experimental guidance and theoretical support for the design of graded ceramic-carbon composite protective coatings for aluminum alloys serving in high chloride marine environments.

The limited efficiency of water oxidation is a significant challenge in the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) without sacrificial agents. Among the different water oxidation reactions, the two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e− WOR) stands out as a promising route for direct H 2 O 2 generation, owing to its favorable kinetics. However, strategies to effectively activate 2e − WOR remain underdeveloped. In this work, we employ a molecular engineering approach to achieve a high density of oxygen vacancy sites on the surface of BiVO 4 (Ov-BiVO 4 ). These vacancies promote favorable interactions with the oxygen-rich ligands of MIL-101 through electrostatic self-assembly, resulting in enhanced growth and reduced formation energy of the material. The optimized photocatalyst demonstrates a remarkable initial photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production rate of 4550.4 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water, a 38-fold increase compared to the unmodified BiVO 4 . Additionally, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) reaches 12.35% at 420 nm. This enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of oxygen vacancies, the incorporation of rare earth bimetallic centers, and the Z-scheme heterojunction, all of which facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Notably, the unsaturated coordination sites of Ce and Er efficiently promote O 2 adsorption and activate the 2e − oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway, crucial for efficient H 2 O 2 production. MIL-101 further improves the water oxidation reaction, optimizing the redox reaction matching within the system. This work introduces a straightforward molecular engineering method for dual-atom anchoring with tailored coordination environments, emphasizing the importance of redox dual-regulation for achieving efficient H 2 O 2 synthesis.

Urea-assisted water splitting that involves urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can purify urea-rich wastewater and produce hydrogen, but the lack of efficient catalysts hampers its application. Ni(OH) 2 is recognized as one of the most active electrocatalysts for UOR but the performance is hindered by the limited active sites with intrinsic activity. Herein, porous Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets with Ce and N codoping (Ce, N Ni (OH) 2 ) are designed to regulate electrochemical microenvironment and used as a bifunctional catalyst for urea-assisted water splitting. The porous structure enhances the exposure of rich active sites, while the Ce, N-codoping optimizes the d band center of active Ni species and improves electron transport. In-situ Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculation disclose the real active sites are γ-NiOOH species generated during the UOR process and the regulated microenvironment promotes a shift in the rate-controlling step of the UOR from CONNH* dehydrogenation to CONHNH* dehydrogenation with a reduced thermodynamic barrier. As a result, the Ce, N-Ni(OH)₂ catalyst delivers excellent UOR activity with a low potential of 1.39 V at 100 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 18.4 mV dec −1 , along with superior HER activity. The assembled urea-assisted electrolyzer achieves a low cell voltage of 1.49 V at 10 mA cm −2 and maintains robust operational stability over 70 h. This work demonstrates a synergistic design strategy of porous structure and dual-element modulation, offering a new avenue for developing advanced catalysts in sustainable energy and environmental applications.

g-C 3 N 4 and rare earth (RE)-doped (Yb, Nd and Ce) g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets were synthesized by a thermal method. The remarkable effects of RE doping on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of g-C 3 N 4 were investigated using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, BET, XPS, UV–Vis, PL, EIS and Mott–Schottky characterization techniques. The photocatalytic activities of RE doped g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets for different dyes were improved compared with g-C 3 N 4 under visible light irradiation, among which Ce/g-C 3 N 4 showed outstanding performance. Due to the doping of RE, it modulates the electronic structure of pristine g-C 3 N 4 and broadens its optical absorption range. In addition, a possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of dyes was propounded by free radical trapping experiments. This work may provide a reference for the rational design of photocatalysts and inspiration for the photocatalytic mechanism.
