MXene–CeO2 Nanorod-Based Optical Biosensor for Ochratoxin A Detection in Real Food Samples

Han Huibo,Singh Ragini,Niu Ben,Zhou Penglei,Zhang Bingyuan,Kumar Santosh

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a potentially harmful mycotoxin that is widely found in agricultural products and animal by-products. In order to ensure our physical health, OTA testing is very important. Therefore, we chose to use an optical fiber biosensor based on the principle of local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and we designed an asymmetric optical fiber structure using single-mode optical fiber (SMF) to detect different concentrations of OTA. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were applied to the sensing region to stimulate the LSPR effect, and then Nb 2 CTxMXene and CeO 2 -nanorods were sequentially fixed on the probe to change the dielectric environment around the sensing region to improve the performance of the sensor. The sensor has a linear range of 0.5 ng/mL to 60 ng/mL, a sensitivity of 0.0805 nm/(ng/mL), and a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.95 ng/mL. After that, we evaluated it through a series of tests, including repeatability, reproducibility, pH, stability, and selectivity. Finally, we also tested and verified the real samples. According to the experimental results, the sensor shows good performance in OTA detection, indicating that the sensor has good application potential and broad development prospects. This work designed an asymmetric optical fiber biosensor based on LSPR, achieving a broad detection range and a low LOD for OTA detection by coating with AuNPs, Nb 2 CTxMXene, and CeO 2 -nanorods. Its reliability and vast prospects in practical applications were validated through repeatability, stability, and real sample testing.

Construction of X-CeO2/FeS heterointerfaces via halogen doping for accelerated oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Yanhuan Wang,Li Li,Tishi Shen,Qingchun Han,Ling Hai,Yujuan Zhai

Designing and developing high-activity and long-term durability electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has primary significance for breaking the bottleneck of water electrolysis. In this study, we synthesized a series of halogen-doped cerium–iron heterostructures with abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of nickel foam using a simple hydrothermal method. In this structure, the conversion between Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ in CeO 2 generates abundant oxygen vacancies that effectively enhance catalyst activity. Concurrently, the combination of the heterostructure and anion doping design synergistically lowers the reaction energy barrier to boost catalytic activity, enabling robust kinetics for the OER reaction. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the Br-CeO 2 /FeS-NF catalyst exhibited excellent OER performance in 1.0 M KOH solution, with an overpotential of only 204 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 31.6 mV·dec ‑1 . Meanwhile, the catalyst exhibited good long-term stability in alkaline electrolyte, with an operational stability of 72 h at 100 mA·cm -2 .

PtPd/CeO2 catalytic enhanced WO3 nanofibers bilayer gas sensor for ppb-level xylene detection

Manwen Hu,Jiejie Yu,Ruijie Qin,Jinwu Hu,Jingcheng Xu,Hui-jun Li,Hui Xu,Jingbo Chen,Ding Wang

Long-term exposure to xylene can seriously damage the respiratory and central nervous systems. Xylene poses significant health risks even at trace levels in the ppb range, highlighting the need for the ppb-level detection. Designing high-performance gas-sensitive materials and sensing structures is essential to address high operating temperatures and poor trace detection. In this work, PtPd nanobimetallic-sensitized CeO 2 porous nanospheres were prepared as the upper catalytic layer via solution self-assembly and impregnation, with WO 3 nanofibers as the lower sensing layer to form a bilayer sensor. The 1 wt%Pt 70 Pd 30 /CeO 2 /WO 3 sensor showed the best response (R a /R g = 38.67) to 10 ppm xylene at 180℃, and it demonstrates a obvious response to xylene at ultra-low concentrations down to 1 ppb (R a /R g = 1.4). The sensor also exhibits good stability and notable humidity resistance. By combining in-situ infrared and online mass spectrometry, we show that xylene is catalytically converted into toluene and methyl radicals upon passing through the 1 wt% Pt 70 Pd 30 /CeO 2 layer, significantly enhancing response performance. In summary, the novel bilayer sensor developed in this study enables trace xylene detection at the ppb level and shows potential for environmental monitoring applications.

CeO2 enhancement on in-situ grown Ni3S2 on nickel foam for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation

Yuefeng Jiang,Xiaofei Li,Ruijie Li,Lili Geng,Yongming Zeng,Ley Boon Sim,Binghui Chen

Electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has long been recognized to efficiently produce the bioplastic precursor, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Introducing composite components to construct multiphase interfaces has high potential in modulating the electronic structure of catalysts. Therefore, we synthesized Ni 3 S 2 -CeO 2 /NF using a three-dimensional porous foam nickel scaffold, in-situ grown Ni 3 S 2 /NF via hydrothermal sulfidation, and further incorporated CeO 2 . Characterization with XRD, HRTEM, and SAED confirms the phases of Ni 3 S 2 and CeO 2 and their heterojunctions. XPS analysis shows that CeO 2 increases the Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ ratio; in situ Raman spectroscopy confirms that NiOOH (Ni 3+ ) regenerated from Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 (Ni 2+ ) is the active material for HMF oxidation, complementarily demonstrating that CeO 2 facilitates NiOOH production and that the oxidation process follows an indirect mechanism. Electrochemical analysis shows that at 1.504 V (vs. RHE), Ni 3 S 2 -CeO 2 /NF achieves 99.5% conversion (vs. 83.1%) of 30 mL of 10 mM HMF within 120 minutes, with 99.4% (vs. 89.2%) FDCA selectivity at 97.1% (vs. 78.4%) Faraday efficiency, along with excellent stability, compared to Ni 3 S 2 /NF. DFT calculations indicate that the synergistic effect of CeO 2 enhances HMF adsorption on NiOOH and significantly reduces the activation energies of all associated elementary reactions. This study provides thorough analysis into how Ni 3 S 2 -CeO 2 /NF has enhanced HMF oxidation capabilities.

Synthesis of high-performance Y3+ doped CeO2 nanoabrasives through regulating crystallization of cerium carbonate☆

Jing Li,Xiaojie Jin,Lijuan Wang,Xiaoqing Zhou,Long Qiu,Xiaowei Huang,Yongxiu Li

Nano ceria abrasive is a key material for ultra-precision chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of advanced integrated circuits and optical components. Ion doping is an effective method to improve the surface Ce 3+ content and chemical polishing effect. In this study, Y 3+ doped CeO 2 nanoabrasives were prepared by regulating the crystallization process of rare earth (RE) carbonate precursor based on the morphology inheritance between the precursors and the calcined products. In order to reduce the crystallization rate of cerium carbonate, the crystallization inert region with NH 4 HCO 3 to Ce 3+ molar ratio of 6 and reaction temperature of 60 °C was selected for precipitation reaction, and Y 3+ , a heavy RE with a large ion radius difference from Ce 3+ , was introduced into the precipitation system. The crystallization rate of cerium carbonate decreases obviously when Y 3+ doping content reaches 8 mol%, and amorphous nanoscale cerium carbonates begin to form. Using them as precursors, Y 3+ doped CeO 2 nanoabrasives with doping content of 8 mol%–20 mol% were prepared by calcination, and their physicochemical properties and polishing performance on K9 glass were studied. The prepared Y 3+ doped CeO 2 nanoabrasives have quasi-spherical morphology and the size is (50±15) nm. With Y 3+ doping amount increasing from 8 mol% to 20 mol%, the surface Ce 3+ concentration of the abrasive particles slightly increases from 20.0% to 21.7%, while the Young’s modulus decreases from 9.44 to 5.85 GPa. The sample with Y 3+ doping content of 10 mol% has the best performance in K9 polishing, with material removal rate of (234.0±4.0) nm/min and surface arithmetic mean height ( S a roughness) of (0.304±0.018) nm.

V-doped CeO2-loaded biopolymer scaffold for reactive oxygen species scavenging and osteogenic enhancement

Linfeng Fan,Feng Yang,Mengling Jiang,Qiuhui Li,Xinna Bai,Pei Feng,Hao Pan

Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during bone scaffold implantation disrupt cellular redox homeostasis and adversely affect stem cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, thereby impeding bone regeneration. In this study, vanadium (V) was doped into the cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) lattice via a wet chemical synthesis, and the resulting V-doped CeO 2 (V-CeO 2 ) nanoparticles were incorporated into a poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) matrix to fabricate composite scaffolds using selective laser sintering. The incorporation of V induced lattice distortion and increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies, which enhanced ROS adsorption and catalytic conversion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that V doping increased the Ce(Ⅲ) content from 31.2% to 39.9%, thereby facilitating the Ce(Ⅲ)/Ce(IV) redox cycle. Specifically, Ce(Ⅲ)exhibited superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity to eliminate O 2 •- , while Ce(IV) showed catalase (CAT)-mimetic activity for H 2 O 2 decomposition. In vitro evaluations demonstrated that the PLLA/V-CeO 2 scaffold significantly reduced intracellular ROS levels and upregulated osteogenic gene expression, including BMP-2 and RUNX2. Moreover, the scaffolds exhibited favorable biocompatibility, supporting osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. These results suggest that V-CeO 2 -integrated scaffolds hold promise for ROS-regulated bone tissue repair.

Constructing MgAlOx–CuRu–CeO2 Heterostructures for Enhanced Low-temperature Photothermal Dry Reforming of Methane

Kun Gong,Ruitao Li,Yuxin Wang,Yihan Zheng,Haoran Yang,Yuanyuan Dai,Qiang Niu,Tiejun Lin,Liangshu Zhong

Light-driven photothermal methane dry reforming offers a promising strategy to produce syngas efficiently with decreased greenhouse gas emissions. However, current photothermal catalysts still face limitations in light-to-fuel efficiencies, typically below 30%. Herein, a MgAlOx–CuRu–CeO2 heterostructure was successfully constructed to boost the light-driven methane dry reforming reaction, which integrated plasmonic resonance, electronic structure modulation, and hierarchical architectures. A remarkable CO production rate of 215.4 mol gRu–1 min–1 was achieved, approximately 18 times higher than that of current advanced catalysts. Moreover, a record-high light-to-fuel efficiency of 42.5% was obtained at a relatively low temperature of 502 °C, along with an exceptionally stable photothermal performance over 60 h of operation. Structural evolution studies revealed that CuRu bimetallic nanoparticles were thermally stabilized via spatial confinement mediated by MgAlOx, which established balanced metal–support interactions and generated abundant oxygen vacancies. Additionally, the multifunctional architecture enhanced electron transfer and created electron-enriched Ru sites. The surface plasmon resonance effect of Cu and oxygen defects within the MgAlOx–CuRu–CeO2 heterostructure enabled wide-bandwidth light harvesting and promoted the formation and segregation of charge carriers. Hot carriers and thermal energy synergistically refined the reaction pathway through HCOO* and CH3O* intermediates, leading to a decrease in the apparent activation energy and enabling the surpassing of thermodynamic equilibrium limitations. This work highlights a promising strategy for boosting solar energy utilization and driving the efficient synthesis of solar fuels through the strategic engineering of multifunctional photothermal catalysts.

Unraveling the Mechanism of Cu/CeO2 Interface Modulation for CO2 Electroreduction Into C2+/CH4

Lei Xiong,Xianbiao Fu,Jun Zhang,Shuang Liu,Shanshan Li,Shaojie Lu,Dong Wang,Qin Yue

Cu shows unique characteristics for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to hydrocarbons and oxygenates due to the moderate adsorption energy of the key intermediate *CO. However, it remains a challenge to selectively control CO 2 RR towards C 1 (e.g., CH 4 ) or C 2+ (e.g., C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 5 OH) through simple interface engineering. Herein, a series of inverse catalysts, composed of CeO 2 nanoparticles over Cu substrate (Cu-CeO 2 -x), are subtly designed to tackle the issues. It is verified CeO 2 decoration induces highly active Cu/CeO 2 interfacial sites that enhance the adsorption and conversion of CO 2 and *CO intermediates into C 2+ or CH 4 , while the Cu sites are conducive to *CO generation. With the increase of CeO 2 deposition, the C 2+ and CH 4 selectivity present a volcano-type and increasing tendency with maximum faradic efficiency of 62.6% and 51.3%, respectively. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that moderate CeO 2 loading allows the Cu/CeO 2 interfacial sites to cooperate efficiently with the Cu sites to promote the coupling of *CO/*CHO intermediates, thus enhancing the C 2+ selectivity. In contrast, excessive CeO 2 loading suppresses the C─C coupling but boosts unilaterally the hydrogenation, thus promoting the CH 4 production. This work provides effective strategies to regulate the CO 2 RR selectivity by modulating metal/oxide interfaces.

Efficient electrosynthesis of CO-rich syngas over CeO2-armored Ag nanowires towards sustainable steelmaking

Yi-Hong Yu,Xin Cui,Yi-Meng Hong,Gao-Wu Qin,Song Li

Incorporating electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) that produces CO-rich syngas into the workflow of steelmaking presents a promising strategy to neutralize the steelmaking industry. Herein, we develop a highly efficient and stable Ag nanowires with surface CeO 2 armors (CeO 2 /AgNWs) as ECR electrocatalyst for syngas production. The engineered CeO 2 -Ag interface facilitates CO 2 -to-CO conversion by lowering the energy barrier for *COOH intermediate formation through synergistic electronic effects. At an industrially relevant current density of −251.3 mA cm −2 , the CeO 2 /AgNWs generate CO-rich syngas by co-electrolysis of CO 2 and H 2 O, with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.1 % for CO. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) reveals that integrating the CeO 2 /AgNWs-driven ECR into existing steelmaking workflows can potentially reduce CO 2 emissions by 83 % and elevate the renewable energy utilization to ∼91.4 %, unlocking new possibilities for achieving carbon neutrality in the steel industry.

Nanostructured CeO2 with different morphologies for methoxycarbonylation of 2,4-toluene diamine with dimethyl carbonate

Mengli Dong,Yu Han,Xinqiang Zhao,Yao Lu,Hualiang An,Yanji Wang

The methoxycarbonylation of 2,4-toluene diamine (TDA) to dimethyl toluene-2,4-dicarbamate (TDC) is an important reaction step in the phosgene-free synthesis of toluene diisocyanate (TDI). To further clarify the catalytic mechanism and enhance the catalytic performance of CeO2, a series of CeO2 catalysts with different morphologies were prepared and their catalytic performance in TDA methoxycarbonylation was evaluated. The results shows that spherical cerium dioxide (CeO2-S) has better catalytic performance. Combined with characterization methods such as TEM, XRD, BET, TPD, XPS, Raman spectra and H2-TPR, the reasons for the differences in catalytic performance of different CeO2 were analyzed, and it is found that the amount of medium-strong acid sites, lattice oxygen content and specific surface area of CeO2 are positively correlated with their catalytic performance. Under optimized conditions, TDA was completely converted, the yield of TDC reached 86.8%, and the total yield of methyl carbamates (including monomethyl carbamate and TDC) reached as high as 96.5%. CeO2-S could be reused four times without significant change in activity. Through designed experiments, it is determined that both pathways with methyl 3-amino-4-methyl-N-phenyl carbamate (4-TMC) and methyl 2-methyl-5-amino-N-phenyl-carbamate (2-TMC) as intermediates could eventually generate TDC. Finally, a synergistic catalytic mechanism of acid site and lattice oxygen in CeO2 for the methoxycarbonylation of TDA was established.

Influence of CeO2-doped glass powder on silver paste performance in photovoltaic solar cells

Wang Donghui,Gan Guoyou,Tang Xianjie,Yu Xianglei,Li Junpeng,Wan Ruixi,Yang Tao

With the advancement of green photovoltaic solar cells, silver paste has sparked vast research interest. As a key functional component of silver paste, glass powder plays a vital role by etching the SiNx layer to achieve ohmic contact with the silicon layer. To investigate the influence of individual oxides on the Te–Bi–B glass system, this study doped 0.5 wt% CeO2, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 into the Te–Bi–B system and prepared a series of glass powders via the high-temperature quenching method. The effects of these dopants on key parameters, including high-temperature flowability, wettability, and thermal stability, were systematically investigated. The results indicate that all three glass powders exhibit suitable glass transition temperatures but undergo relatively pronounced crystallisation reactions. Among them, the CeO2-doped glass powder demonstrates superior chemical stability, high-temperature flowability, and wettability. Therefore, CeO2 is identified as the optimal dopant oxide, and silver paste prepared from it significantly enhanced Ag–Si interface bonding, achieving maximum silver electrode adhesion (3.87 N) and minimum volume resistivity (2.8 × 10−8 Ω m), thereby demonstrating excellent sintering performance. Furthermore, the CeO2-doped glass powder significantly influences the etching of silicon emitters and the Ag–Si ohmic contact structure, reducing contact resistance in photovoltaic solar cells and consequently improving their photovoltaic conversion efficiency (23.17%).

Biotemplated construction of CoCu/Bio-CeO2 for efficiently boosting the tandem hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Zhiyong Fu,Xusheng Yang,Sirong Zhao,Shun Hu,Changsong Chen,Bin Xu,Zhen Xiang,Weidong Jiang

Tea pollen-template fabricated Bio-CeO₂ served as a support for developing the supported CoCu-based bimetallic catalysts (CoCu/Bio-CeO₂). The catalytic performance of the as-prepared CoCu/Bio-CeO₂ catalysts was evaluated in the tandem hydrogenation of nitroaromatic compounds. The templated Bio-CeO₂ support not only successfully replicates the natural porous structure of tea pollen, but also induces the catalyst reconstruction and compositional differentiation. In contrast to non-templated or sole metallic analogues, Bio-CeO 2 -supported CoCu-based nanocatalysts endow more promising catalytic performance. The one selected Co₁Cu₄/Bio-CeO₂ exhibited excellent reactivity, achieving a hydrogen production rate (HGR) of 422.2 mL·min⁻¹·gcat⁻¹ and a nearly 99% yield of m-chloraniline (m-CAN) in the in-situ hydrogenation of m-chloronitrobenzene (m-CNB) under mild conditions. High activity was remained accompanying with over 87% yield of m-CAN after six runs. Co₁Cu₄/Bio-CeO₂ displayed superior activity and good substrate adaptability in the tandem hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds bearing various functional groups. The high stability and desired catalytic performance of Co₁Cu₄/Bio-CeO₂ shall be attributed to intermetallic synergistic effect as well as strong interaction between active metal and the Bio-CeO₂ support.
