The absorption of propylene and propane in Cu(I)-based ionic liquids, i.e., 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride/CuCl ([Bmim][Cl]/CuCl), N-Methyl pyrrolidone chloride/CuCl ([HNMP][Cl]/CuCl), and tricaprylmethylammonium thiocyanate/CuSCN ([A336][SCN]/CuSCN), are investigated in this work. It is observed that such Cu(I)-based ionic liquids, especially Bmim-based ionic liquids, present good absorption capability for propylene and good selectivity over propane, e.g., 1.0 kilogram [Bmim][Cl]/CuCl is able to absorb 0.08 mol propylene while only 0.006 mol propane at 25°C and 1.3 bar with the selectivity of 13. The effects of pressure, Cu+ concentration, and temperature on the absorption are investigated; in addition, the absorption kinetics of propylene by [Bmim][Cl]/CuCl is obtained. The much higher absorption capability for propylene than propane is ascribed to the π-complexation between propylene and Cu+. This work shows that the absorption by Cu(I)-based ionic liquids is an potential alternative method for traditional cryogenic distillation with high energy cost to separate propylene and propane.

The single-molecule conductance of 1,4-dicyanobenzene (DCB), 1,4-benzenediamine (BDA) and 4,4'-biphenyldicarbonitrile (BPDC) with Ag and/or Cu electrodes is measured by electrochemical jump-to-contact STM-break junction. All single-molecule junctions present three sets of conductance values revealing different contact geometries. We observe that the single-molecule conductance of Ag-BDA-Ag junction is larger that of Ag-DCB-Ag junction, and DCB with Ag contacts are more conductive than that with Cu ones. This is related to a different electronic coupling between the molecules and the electrodes. Tunneling decay constants of 1.70 and 1.68 per phenyl group were found for Ag and Cu electrodes, respectively. The present study therefore shows that nitrile and amino groups can also be used as effective anchors for other metals than gold.

CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) facilitates the sustainable synthesis of fuels and chemicals. Although copper (Cu) enables CO2-to-multicarbon product (C2+) conversion, Cu-based electrocatalysts, particularly nanocatalysts, face challenges in poor selectivity and stability owing to the highly dynamic nature of Cu atoms under reaction conditions. Core–shell structures present a promising approach to address these issues by modulating the Cu overlayer–substrate interactions with atomic-level precision. Here, we report on Pd@Cu core–shell structures with atomically thin and nanometer-thick Cu overlayers on single-crystal Pd nanocubes with {100} facets promoting the CO2-to-C2+ conversion. The microstructures and surface compositions at the atomically sharp Pd/Cu interface were investigated by atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Our results reveal that atomic-layer Cu epitaxially grows on Pd and adapts to the lattice of the Pd substrate. The reaction-driven migration of atomic-layer Cu is effectively suppressed on Pd due to the strong Cu–Pd interaction. While Pd only reduces CO2 to C1 products, atomic-layer Cu on Pd can initiate the C2+ production during the CO2RR. Thick Cu overlayers (∼15 nm) on Pd further enhance the C2+ faradaic efficiency while undergoing significant structural reconstruction, with only the 2–3 nm Cu layers near the Pd surface remaining stable and resistant to Cu migration after the CO2RR. We anticipate that Pd@Cu core–shell structures with intermediate Cu shell thickness hold significant potential for enhancing C2+ selectivity while maintaining high stability of nanocatalysts for CO2 reduction to liquid fuels.

The abuse of antibiotics has seriously threatened human health and living environment. Nevertheless, the detection of quinolones is currently mainly performed by high-cost and cumbersome means, such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Herein, we reported a novel method based on copper-doped MoO x nanoparticles (Cu-MoO x NPs) with peroxidase-like enhancement activity for the easy preparation, sensitive and rapid visualization of quinolone detection. Cu-MoO x NPs can make the chromogenic substrate 3,3′,5,5′-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) change from colorless to blue. Moreover, the addition of quantitative quinolone antibiotics can significantly accelerate the TMB oxidation reaction. Based on this phenomenon, a colorimetric method for detecting quinolone antibiotics was established with a good linear relationship ranging from 1 × 10 −6 M to 1.3 × 10 −4 M, and the detection limit was 0.310 μM for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and 0.520 μM for levofloxacin (LVFX). Furthermore, the mechanism was also explored, and the results showed that the peroxidase-like activity of Cu-MoO x NPs was probably derived from the generated OH, 1 O 2 , oxygen vacancies and partially reduced Cu + , and on the other hand was derived from quinolone antibiotics and nanozymes electrostatic interaction between them.

Developing and implementing technologies that can significantly reduce food loss during storage and transport are of paramount importance. Ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation (OSCO) technology has been developed, which sterilizes bacteria and viruses on the surface of food and degrades ethylene released during fruit storage through the active oxygen produced by the catalytic decomposition of ozone. Herein, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of MnO2with distinct phase compositions and nanostructures through simply varying the reaction temperatures. Optimized copper-doped α-MnO2nanorods exhibited remarkable efficacy in activating ozone at a concentration of 40 ppb, and this activation resulted in the complete eradication of indicator bacteria on food surfaces within a 24 h period. Moreover, these nanorods demonstrated high effectiveness in decomposing more than 80% of the ethylene molecules emitted by apples and bananas during the preservation period. The high concentration of surface oxygen vacancies is believed to contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity of the Cu-doped α-MnO2catalyst in the OSCO procedure by reducing ethylene production and maintaining the fruit quality during the preservation period.

Bacterial keratitis (BK) is a critical and sight-threatening corneal infection that significantly impairs the quality of life. Due to the widespread antibiotic-resistant microbes and the slow development in antibiotics, there is an increasingly growing demand to create new antimicrobial agents for the treatment of BK. Herein, copper-intercalated molybdenum disulfide (Cu-MoS 2 ) nanosheets are constructed by intercalating Cu into the interlayer structure of MoS 2 via intercalation chemistry, which not only introduces the Fenton reaction but also modulates the electronic structure of MoS 2 . Cu-MoS 2 can convert H 2 O 2 into more toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby exhibiting excellent bactericidal performance against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) at room temperature in the dark. Animal experiments indicated that Cu-MoS 2 can effectively treat BK caused by MRSA. This work demonstrates that intercalation chemistry as a novel and effective strategy to tune MoS 2 as the antibacterial agent with no reliance on light that has great potential therapeutic effects on clinical drug-resistant BK.

Ofloxacin (OFX), commonly employed in the treatment of infectious diseases, is frequently detected in aquatic environments and poses potential ecological risks. UV/H 2 O 2 oxidation has been recognized as an efficient approach for removing antibiotics. In this study, Cu-doped waste-tire carbon was prepared and used as a UV/H 2 O 2 catalyst for the degradation of OFX. The results showed that the OFX removal was 89.3% within 90 min under the optimal reaction conditions. It was found that ZnO, used in the tire manufacturing to promote rubber vulcanization for enhanced stability and durability, played an important role in UV/H₂O₂ oxidation for OFX degradation. Toxicity experiments conducted with a microbial degradation respirometer demonstrated that the treated water exhibited low toxicity. This study introduces a sustainable catalyst derived from waste tires, and facilitating the development of metal-carbon catalysts for the effective removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) coexist commonly in various waters, which may infiltrate into the subterranean environment through runoff and leaching, resulting in substantial ecological risks. However, the underlying mechanisms why Cu(II) affects the transport of TC in porous media remain to be further explored and supported by more evidence, especially the role of complexation. In this study, the transport of TC with coexisting Cu(II) was comprehensively explored with column experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. At natural environmental concentrations, Cu(II) significantly inhibited the transport of TC in the quartz sand column. Cu(II) augmented the retention of TC in the column mainly via electrostatic force and complexation. The interaction between TC and TC–Cu complexes on the surface of SiO2 was investigated with first-principles calculations for the first time. There were strong van der Waals forces and coordination bonds on the surface of complexes and SiO2, leading to higher adsorption energy than that of TC and inhibiting its penetration. This study offers novel insights and theoretical framework for the transport of antibiotics in the presence of metal ions to better understand the fate of antibiotics in nature.

Skin wound healing, particularly diabetic wound healing, is a common clinical challenge. Reducing bacterial infection and promoting angiogenesis are key strategies for diabetic wound healing. In this study, we construct the porphyrin-based Cu-covalent organic frameworks (Cu-COF) through a Schiff base condensation reaction, and then functionalize Cu-COF with 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(polyethylene glycol)] (mPEG-DSPE), denoted as PEG/Cu-COF, for enhancing diabetic wound healing. PEG/Cu-COF exhibits dual enzymatic properties (glutathione (GSH) oxidase-like and peroxidase (POD)-like nanozymes), facilitating the depletion of GSH and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through a self-cascading enzymatic reaction, thereby leading to chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to investigate the catalytic mechanism and the results reveal that Cu-COF exhibits higher catalytic activity for POD. Moreover, porphyrin-based COF generates singlet oxygen and localize heating under white light and near-infrared irradiation, respectively. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that PEG/Cu-COF exhibits multimodal synergistic sterilization and promotes angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and re-epithelialization during diabetic wound healing. This work highlights the potential utilization of PEG/Cu-COF for self-supplying hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and amplifying self-cascade reactions to address the limitations of enzymatic treatment, while the synergistic effect of phototherapy improves sterilization and minimizes side effects in vivo .

The development of simple, efficient and economical catalysts for the hydrogenation of biomass to produce high value-added chemicals is of great significance in solving the energy crisis. In this work, a series of non-precious metal catalysts (Cu–Al2O3–ZnO) with different defect sites were prepared by etching Devarda's alloy. Under optimized mild reaction conditions, the furfural conversion and furfuryl alcohol selectivity are both greater than 99.0%, and the catalyst has good reusability. Characterisation and experiments were used to investigate the activate species for hydrogenation reaction. It can be proved that the low-valent Cu species in the Cu–Al2O3–ZnO catalysts play an important role as adsorption and dissociation sites for H2. Different etching degrees and sample reduction temperatures of the alloy can be used to adjust the content of acidic sites such as Al2O3 and CuO, which have appropriate adsorption properties for furfural. ZnO promotes the dispersion of the Cu species and enhances the accessibility of the active sites. The etching method achieves the interaction between species to further enhance the stability and activity of the catalyst. The catalytic performance of the catalyst is very competitive and this study provides a new method for the efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) holds promise for cancer treatment by generating reactive oxygen species via photosensitizers (PSs) activated by specific wavelengths of light. However, the poor water solubility of PSs and the tumor microenvironment, characterized by high glutathione (GSH) levels and hypoxia, limit its efficacy against hypoxic tumors. To overcome these challenges, we developed a novel nano-reactor, Zr(Cu)-MOF@Au@DHA, to augment PDT-ferroptosis therapy. By incorporating Cu2+ into the porphyrin ring of PCN-224 and decorating it with gold nanoparticles, we enhanced the photocatalytic efficiency of the metal–organic framework (MOF). Additionally, dihydroartemisinin (DHA) was loaded onto the nano-reactor to boost the ferroptosis sensitivity of bladder cancer cells. Both in vitro and in vivo studies confirm that under laser irradiation, Zr(Cu)-MOF@Au@DHA significantly elevates oxidative stress, depletes GSH, and triggers DHA release, sensitizing tumor cells to ferroptosis and enhancing PDT-ferroptosis therapy for bladder cancer. This innovative nano-platform integrates near-infrared light-triggered PDT with chemotherapy to induce ferroptosis, addressing critical limitations in bladder cancer treatment.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is a new method for cancer treatment that produces highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the tumor microenvironment to induce cancer cell apoptosis or necrosis. However, the therapeutic effect of CDT is often hindered by intracellular H2O2 deficiency and the activity of antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH). In this study, a nano-catalyst HCM was developed using a self-assembled Cu/Mn-doped metal-organic framework, and its surface was modified with hyaluronic acid to construct a tumor-targeting CDT therapeutic agent with improved the efficiency and specificity. Three substances HHTP (2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11-hexahydroxybenzophenanthrene), Cu2+, and Mn2+ were shown to be decomposed and released under weakly acidic conditions in tumor cells. HHTP produces exogenous H2O2 in the presence of oxygen to increase the H2O2 content in tumors, Cu2+ reduces GSH content and generates Cu+ in the tumor, and Cu+ and Mn2+ catalyze H2O2 to produce OH in a Fenton-like reaction. Together, these three factors change the tumor microenvironment and improve the efficiency of ROS production. HCM showed selective and efficient cytotoxicity to cancer cells, and could effectively inhibit tumor growth in vivo, indicating a good CDT effect.
