Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated sterilization typically relies on continuous light irradiation or exogenous H 2 O 2 addition, limiting their practical utility under dark or resource-limited conditions. Herein, we rationally design an S-scheme MIL-100(Fe)/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 heterojunction (M 5 Z 1 –1@ZIS2) by in-situ growing Zn-doped MIL-100(Fe) on Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , achieving synergistic light-harvesting and ROS self-supply capabilities. The incorporation of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 enhances electron density around Fe 2+ sites while modulating Fe 3+ states, significantly improving O₂ activation and H 2 O 2 affinity. This unique electronic regulation enables the heterojunction to generate superoxide radical(·O₂ − )-dominated ROS even in the dark. Notably, visible-light pretreatment induces active In sites in Zn 3 In 2 S 6 to produce H 2 O 2 , which accumulates and sustains the FeII/FeIII redox cycle in the absence of light, driving continuous hydroxyl radical(·OH)-dominated ROS generation. Combined characterizations including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) confirm H₂O₂-mediated Fe 2+ regeneration and ROS persistence. The M 5 Z 1 –1@ZIS2 heterojunction exhibits exceptional antibacterial performance, achieving ≥99.9% inactivation of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) within 1.5 h in the dark and 40 min under visible light. This work provides a strategy for designing self-sustaining catalytic systems that leverage light-driven H₂O₂ supply to enable day-night ROS functionality. Furthermore, M 5 Z 1 –1@ZIS2 loaded on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film can achieve an efficiency of over 99% for particulate matter (PM) pollutants at the wind speeds of 1.5 m/s and 0.5 m/s and reach a maximum adsorption efficiency of 99.5% for formaldehyde within 19 min, highlighting its potential for all-weather air purification via ROS-mediated environmental remediation.

The 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4(H)-pyran-4-one (DDMP) is one of the Mallard reaction product with intense bitter and strong antioxidant activity . Insight into DDMP formation pathways is important to manage Maillard reaction products quality. In this work, wet- and dry-heating glucose-amino acid model reactions were investigated to understand the DDMP formation pathways. Lysine and proline facilitated the DDMP generation in wet- and dry-heating system, respectively, suggesting the reaction intensity and amino acid properties are primary factors mediating DDMP generation. Fundamental mechanism on DDMP formation or inhibition was evaluated via quantitatively monitoring enolization products, which suggested that the formation of DDMP was facilitated at lower moisture content condition caused by more 1-deoxyglucosone (1-DG) generation via 2,3-enolization. However, increasing moisture content resulted in the decay of DDMP because of the transformation of 2,3-enolization to 1,2-enolization, which inhibited DDMP generation but transformed to form 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF).

The control of 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4(H)-pyran-4-one (DDMP) formation in the Maillard reaction is important to improve the thermally treated food quality as a result of its intense bitterness and potential toxicity. In this work, phenolic acids, such as gallic, protocatechuic, caffeic, and ferulic acids, were applied to modulate DDMP formation in a microaqueous glucose–proline model. The formation of DDMP was inhibited at low concentrations (from 0.1 to 5.0 mM) while enhanced at 10.0 mM gallic, protocatechuic, and caffeic acids. Ferulic acid always inhibited DDMP formation as a result of the absence of catechol groups on its benzene ring. The result indicated that the control of DDMP formation depended upon the concentration and chemical structures of phenolic acids, such as the number of hydroxyl groups. Further studies indicated that the hydroxyl distribution of phenolic acids regulated the peroxide formation in the model reaction system and further changed the development of the oxidation reaction, which affected the degradation of glucose via caramel or Maillard reaction, Amadori rearrangement product oxidation, and 1-deoxyglucosone degradation to form the intermediates.

A new CeCO 3 OH@(hexagonal/cubic phases–CdS) (CeCO 3 OH@(H/C–CdS)) composite catalyst was facilely synthesized by a simple microinjection titration–stirring method, in which CdS nanoparticles were dispersed on the surface of CeCO 3 OH nanolines. The optimal conditions for the preparation of composite catalysts with high photocatalytic performance were determined by single-factor experiments and response surface experiments. Under these conditions, the degradation rate of 30 mL 2.000 g/L rhodamine B (Rh B) by CeCO 3 OH@(H/C-CdS) in a photocatalytic reaction for 1 h at 25 °C was up to 86.81 % and its degradation rate in a photocatalytic reaction for 150 min was up to 99.62 %. The degradation rate could be maintained above 80 % even after six times recycling. Especially, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 2.000 g/L Rh B on the composite catalyst under sunlight and at room temperature for 30 min reached 97.66 %. Meanwhile, the large size of CeCO 3 OH considerably alleviated the agglomeration of CdS, providing more adsorption and active sites for visible light-mediated degradation of Rh B. Importantly, the Z-scheme charge transfer realized by CdS and CeCO 3 OH enhanced the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and successfully inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electrons with holes. At the same time, owing to the low energy band difference between the two phases of CdS, charge was transferred between the hexagonal and cubic phases, leaving more effective photogenerated charge to participate in the degradation of Rh B. The synergism of the heterophase junction and heterojunction and the presence of oxygen and sulfur vacancies considerably enhanced the degradation performance of the catalyst. Thus, this study provides a new strategy for the modification and enhanced visible-light catalysis performance of CdS-based catalysts.

The development of stable and efficient ODS catalysts for achieving room-temperature catalytic oxidation desulfurization is one of the challenges in the field of catalytic oxidation desulfurization. This work successfully synthesized and evaluated a new type of composite catalyst, Mo8/h-BN, using the wet impregnation method to investigate its desulfurization performance under various conditions. ODS tests were conducted on DBT, BT, and 4,6-DMDBT using Mo8/h-BN as the catalyst, H2O2 as the oxidant, and [BMIM]PF6 as the extractant. Characterization and testing revealed that Mo8/h-BN exhibited excellent ODS activity, converting DBT completely at 60 °C in 10 min. This study not only explored the optimal desulfurization conditions but also investigated the desulfurization performance of the catalyst at room temperature. Additionally, it is speculated that there may be an electron transfer between Mo8 and h-BN, which enhances the stability of the catalyst. Finally, possible CODS mechanisms were inferred through GC-MS and free radical trapping experiments. In conclusion, the composite catalyst Mo8/h-BN provides a new pathway for developing low-energy consumption, sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient desulfurization catalysts.

Organic metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) bearing both high efficiency and durability are predominantly challenged by inadequate crystallinity of perovskite. Herein, a polymer microencapsulation-expansion-contraction strategy is proposed for the first time to optimize the crystallization behavior of perovskite, typically by adeptly harnessing the swelling and deswelling characteristics of poly(4-acryloylmorpholine) (poly(4-AcM)) network on PbI 2 surface. It can effectively retard the crystallization rate of perovskite, permitting meliorative crystallinity featured by increased grain size from 0.74 to 1.32 µm and reduced trap density from 1.12 × 10 16 to 2.56 × 10 15 cm −3 . Moreover, profiting from the protection of poly(4-AcM) microencapsulation layer, the degradation of the perovskite is markedly suppressed. Resultant PSCs gain a robust power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.04%. Typically, they maintain 91% of their initial PCE for 13 008 h in a desiccated ambient environment and retain 92% PCE after storage for 4000 h with a relative humidity of 50 ± 10%, which is the state-of-the-art long-term stability among the reported contributions.

Developing efficient and stable catalysts to convert CO2 to desirable C1 products is of great importance for carbon resource utilization. Cobalt-based catalysts usually show high activity in methanation but poor selectivity to CO from the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction. Herein, we synthesized In-doped CeO2-supported cobalt catalysts for RWGS reaction, which achieved almost reverse 100% selectivity toward CO with a near-equilibrium CO2 conversion of about 49% at 500 °C and 1 MPa. Results showed that catalyst reduction could result in In species migration onto Co particles to form an InCo alloy, thereby modulating the cobalt electronic structure. It thus strengthened Co–H* bonding but weakened CO adsorption and activation, in turn inhibiting CH4 formation via HCOO* and CO hydrogenation. Interestingly, the reaction temperature-dependent deactivation was observed over 10Co/CeO2, owing to cobalt oxidation determined by the O atom chemical potential (μO). Theoretical investigations demonstrate that μO is related to the free energy of H2O and H2 (μO = GH2O‐GH2), where the reaction temperature exhibits different degrees of effect on GH2OandGH2. Based on the deactivation behavior study, we successfully developed a simple strategy to suppress oxidation deactivation by mixing with hydrophilic H-ZSM-5 zeolite to drive H2O desorption away from the cobalt surface during the CO2 methanation reaction with much more H2O molecules produced.

The mild electrolyte working environment of rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) features its promising characteristic and potential application for large-scale energy storage system. However, the poor cycling stability significantly hinders the broad application of AZIBs due to the complex electrochemical conversion reactions during charge-discharge process. Herein, we propose a strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of AZIB by enhancing the successive electrochemical conversion reactions. With a rational design of electrode, an even homogeneous electric field can be achieved in the cathode side, resulting to significantly enhanced efficiency of successive electrochemical conversion reactions. Charge storage mechanism studies reveal that the reversibility behaviors of byproducts alkaline zinc sulfate (ZHS) can dramatically determine the H + /Zn 2+ de/intercalation process, and a high reversibility characteristic ensures the facilitated electrochemical kinetics. As expected, the resultant AZIB possesses outstanding electrochemical performance with a high specific capacity of 425.08 mAh⋅g −1 at 0.1 A⋅g −1 , an excellent rate capacity of about 60% (246.6 mAh⋅g −1 at 1 A⋅g −1 ) and superior cycling stability of 93.7% after 3000 cycles (at 3 A⋅g −1 ). This effective strategy and thinking proposed here may open a new avenue for the development of high-performing AZIBs.

Metal nanoparticles encapsulated in zeolite have been recently developed as a special type of catalyst that shows significant advantages in activity, shape-selectivity, and stability over conventional supported catalysts. The selectivity modulation of encapsulated nanoparticle catalysis by the zeolite microenvironment is theoretically possible but not addressed yet. Here, we report the in situ encapsulation of sub-nanometric palladium species within MFI-type zeolites, which exhibit high activity and good stability in the hydroconversion of furfural as a model reaction of biomass upgrading. Remarkably, different products, e.g., furan, furfural alcohol, and 1,5-pentanediol, from furfural hydroconversion can be obtained when silicalite-1, Na-ZSM-5, and H-ZSM-5 are employed as hosts of palladium nanoparticles, respectively. Density functional theory calculations and spectroscopy investigations reveal that both the adsorption of furfural and the activation of hydrogen are significantly affected by the zeolite microenvironment, leading to different reaction pathways. Our work presents an elegant example of catalytic selectivity modulation of encapsulated metal nanoparticles by tuning the zeolite microenvironment.

High-resolution 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR ) was advanced to determine both epoxy value and iodine value ( IV ) of vegetable oils that occur during their epoxidation. For calibration, rather than using a series of diluted stock samples, epoxidized soybean oils with a range of IV and epoxy value synthesized using entrapped peroxophosphotungstate as the catalyst under different reaction conditions were used. During the epoxidation reaction, IV and epoxy value were tracked with respect to time using 1 H NMR and conventional volumetric methods. The integrated peak area of the olefinic hydrogens (5.3–5.5 ppm) was used to calculate the absolute number of double-bonded protons. By comparison of IV obtained by 1 H NMR and the traditional Wijs-cyclohexane methods, the correlation coefficient was R 2 = 0.9997 for the regression equation y = 1.1314 x + 1.0035, where x was the result given by 1 H NMR. The average integrated peak areas related to the hydrogens of the epoxide groups located at chemical shifts of 2.9 ppm (monoepoxide) and 3.1 ppm (diepoxide) were used to determine the epoxy value. The quantification of the number of epoxides was carried out by 1 H NMR and the values obtained were correlated with epoxide content determined by the hydrochloric acid/acetone method. As a consequence, the correlation coefficient was R 2 = 0.9991 for the regression equation y = 0.0052 x + 1.7258, where x was the average integrated peak areas related to the hydrogens of the epoxide groups by 1 H NMR. The novelty of our study lies in the simultaneous correlation between IV and epoxy value obtained from conventional titrations, the integrated peak area related to olefinic protons, and the average integrated peak area located at the hydrogen of epoxide group, calculated using 1 H NMR. This approach is used to monitor and optimize the epoxidation reaction.

Redox-responsive hydropersulfide prodrugs are designed to enable a more controllable and efficient hydropersulfide (RSSH) supply and to thoroughly explore their biological and therapeutic applications in oxidative damage. To obtain novel activation patterns triggered by redox signaling, we focused on NAD(P)H: quinone acceptor oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), a canonical antioxidant enzyme, and designed NQO1-activated RSSH prodrugs. We also performed a head-to-head comparison of two mainstream structural scaffolds with solid quantitative analysis of prodrugs, RSSH, and metabolic by-products by LC-MS/MS, confirming that the perthiocarbamate scaffold was more effective in intracellular prodrug uptake and RSSH production. The prodrug was highly potent in oxidative stress management against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Strikingly, this prodrug possessed potential feedback activation properties by which the delivered RSSH can further escalate the prodrug activation via NQO1 upregulation. Our strategy pushed RSSH prodrugs one step further in the pursuit of efficient release in biological matrices and improved druggability against oxidative stress.

Recently, the newly-emerging lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted intensive research interest for lighting and display applications owing to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. It is regrettable that the toxicity and instability of lead largely hinder their practical applications. Here, zero-dimensional (0D) cesium indium halide (Cs3InX6) QDs were synthesized for the first time using a modified ligand-assisted reprecipitation method, and the emission wavelength can be tuned facilely via an anion exchange reaction. Typically, the Cs3InBr6 QDs showed broadband blue emission with a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 46%. First-principles calculations were performed and temperature-dependent PL was studied to investigate the emission mechanisms of the Cs3InBr6 QDs; the 0D nature of Cs3InBr6 enhances the localization of excitons, resulting in a large exciton binding energy. It is worth noting that the strong electron–phonon coupling of Cs3InBr6 indicates that the broadband emission comes from self-trapped exciton emission. Moreover, the Cs3InX6 QDs exhibit excellent stability against moisture, ultraviolet light and heat degradation, significantly better than for conventional lead halide perovskites. Subsequently, the white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) prepared using blue-emissive Cs3InBr6 QD powder used as the phosphor showed an excellent working stability with a record half-life (T50) of 186 h. Even if the operating temperature is as high as 106.9 °C, the LED can still operate well and reach a T50 of 50 h. These results highlight the huge advantages and application potential of 0D Cs3InX6 QDs as an environmentally friendly emitter in the field of solid-state lighting.
