In this work, through the in situ growth of MnO2 nanosheets on the surface of terbium metal–organic frameworks (Tb–MOFs), MOF@MnO2 nanocomposites are prepared and the fluorescence of Tb–MOFs is quenched significantly by MnO2. Additionally, the hybrid nanoflowers are self-assembled by cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) and copper phosphate (Cu3(PO4)2·3H2O). Then a new strategy for cholesterol determination is developed based on MOF@MnO2 nanocomposites and hybrid nanoflowers. Cholesterol is oxidized under the catalysis of hybrid nanoflowers to yield H2O2, which further reduces MnO2 nanosheets into Mn2+. Hence, the fluorescence recovery of Tb–MOFs is positively correlated to the concentration of cholesterol in the range of 10 to 360 μM. The limit of detection (LOD) of cholesterol is 1.57 μM. On the other hand, the hierarchical and confined structure of ChOx–inorganic hybrid nanoflowers greatly improve the stability of the enzyme. The activity of hybrid nanoflowers remains at a high level for one week when stored at room temperature. Moreover, the hybrid nanoflowers can be collected by centrifugation and reused. The activity of hybrid nanoflowers can continue at a high level for five cycles of determination. Therefore, it can be concluded that the hybrid nanoflowers are more stable and more economic than free enzymes, and they show a similar sensitivity and specificity to cholesterol compared with free ChOx. Finally, this strategy has been further validated for the determination of cholesterol in serum samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Herein, a novel boron doped carbon sphere (BCS) and its derived MnO2 nanocomposite electrode (abbreviated as MnO2/BCS) are firstly prepared via a facile hydrothermal strategy, which was successfully confirmed via a combined characterization including SEM, TEM, EDS, FT-IR, Raman and XPS. Due to the introduction of BCS, the MnO2/BCS shows hierarchical nanoflower-like morphology with a smaller particle size and higher specific surface area than that of pristine MnO2. Importantly, the resultant MnO2/BCS with proper addition of BCS displays superior OER performance than those of the pristine MnO2. The electrochemical measurement results demonstrate that the optimal MnO2/BCS0.08 can give rise to a lowest overpotential mere 170 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, onset potential reaching 1.33 V together with smallest Tafel slope value of 31.43 mV dec−1, which can be mainly due to the higher conductivity, faster charge transfer kinetics and higher electrocatalytic active sites of the MnO2/BCS0.08 than those of other counterparts. Undoubtedly, the incorporation of BCS is mainly responsible for the enhanced electrocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the MnO2/BCS0.08 also has a prominent long-term stability in alkaline conditions. In conclusion, our present work demonstrates an effective strategy to enhance the OER performance of MnO2 by incorporation of the carbon nanomaterials.

The overexpression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) suppresses STING signaling and modulates lipid metabolism in tumor cells, leading to abnormal lipid droplet (LD) accumulation. Herein, we constructed a manganese dioxide (MnO2)-based nanomotor (HMIP@A). HMIP@A depletes intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glutathione (GSH) to generate oxygen (O2), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and manganese (Mn2+). A dual strategy of “oxygen supplementation” and “small-molecule inhibition” synergistically downregulates HIF-1α, thereby suppressing LD biogenesis. This process sensitizes tumor cells to ROS, leading to severe DNA damage. Released Mn2+and damaged DNA synergistically activate the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway. In vitro, HMIP@A markedly increases ROS production, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and DNA damage, thereby inducing tumor cell death, immunogenic cell death (ICD), and dendritic cell (DC) maturation. Furthermore, HMIP@A exhibits excellent penetration in tumor spheroids. Overall, this study provides a theoretical basis for the design of nanomedicines through a strategy integrating metabolic intervention, oxidative damage sensitization, and immune activation.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are attracting widespread attention for large-scale energy storage due to their high safety, environmental friendliness, high theoretical capacity and favorable cost-effectiveness. Substantial research has focused on addressing side reactions such as corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and dendrite formation at the zinc anode interface. However, the absence of high-performance cathode materials hinders the commercialization of this battery system. Manganese dioxide as a promising cathode candidate for ZIBs suffers from severe capacity decay during cycling, which remains a critical challenge. Herein, an effective strategy for enhancing cyclic stability and specific capacity of α-MnO 2 nanowires via Ti 4+ -induced dual-functionality is provided. As expected, the Ti-doped sample exhibits superior cyclic stability and rate capability compared to the pristine material, delivering an initial specific capacity of 175 mAh·g -1 and maintaining 116 mAh·g -1 after 200 cycles. Notably, the Ti-doped electrode retains excellent long-term stability and comparable specific capacity upon reverting to the initial low current density after stepwise cycling at progressively increased rates, demonstrating enhanced structural and electrochemical reversibility. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the incorporation of Ti 4+ offers dual-functionality by reducing energy barriers for electron transitions and ion migration, while optimizing the electrode surface to suppress insulating by-products accumulation, thereby boosting overall electrochemical performance.

Aqueous Zn//MnO 2 batteries have attracted much attention for their promising application in large-scale energy storage and flexible electronics. However, it is an obstacle to develop high-performance MnO 2 that can be massively synthesized via a facile method. Herein, a mechanical grinding method is employed to prepare α -MnO 2 /reduced graphene oxide ( α -MnO 2 /rGO) composite material in which α -MnO 2 nanofibers are uniformly loaded onto the surface of rGO sheets. It is found that the α -MnO 2 /rGO composite cathode exhibits much superior rate performance and cycling stability over α -MnO 2 , which is attributed to the significantly increased electrical conductivity and enlarged specific surface area. In addition, a flexible quasi-solid-state Zn// α -MnO 2 /rGO battery with excellent cycling performance was fabricated, and can survive multiple damages. This work provides a guidance to the massive production of high-performance cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered promising candidates for safe energy storage. However, their development is hindered by the inherent limitations of cathode materials: MnO2 suffers from low conductivity, slow ion diffusion, and manganese dissolution, while Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) exhibit low specific capacity and structural instability. To address these challenges, we rationally design and synthesize a core–shell NiCoPBA@MnO2 composite via a simple two-step method. This architecture integrates a stable NiCoPBA core with a highly active MnO2 shell, synergistically combining their advantages. The NiCoPBA core provides a robust framework to buffer volume changes and facilitate ion transport, while the MnO2 shell offers abundant active sites for redox reactions. Ex situ XPS analysis reveals a dual-redox mechanism involving Mn2+/Mn3+/Mn4+ in the shell and Co2+/Co3+ in the core, which significantly boosts the composite's specific capacity, while electrochemically inert Ni in the core strengthens the lattice framework, imparting excellent cycling stability. As a result, the NiCoPBA@MnO2 cathode exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, delivering a high reversible specific capacity of 270.1 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and maintaining 86.2 mAh g−1 after 800 cycles at 1 A g−1. It also demonstrates excellent rate capability and remarkable reversibility. This work presents an effective strategy for designing high-performance and durable cathodes for next-generation AZIBs.

Layered manganese oxide has rich active sites, amounts of variable valence states, and economic feasibility, so it has attracted wide attention. In aqueous zinc ion batteries, its poor conductivity and easy solubility in water limit its performance as an electrode. Therefore, we used a simple one-step hydrothermal method to prepare Ag+ intercalated MnO2 for aqueous zinc-ion batteries’ cathode. An in-depth exploration of the electrochemical phenomenon of Ag–MnO2 found that interlayer Ag+ regulates the electronic structure of MnO2 and reduces the Jahn–Teller effect, and the desolvation of Ag–MnO2 is easier, which promotes the embedding of Zn2+. In addition, the migration of Ag+ and the in situ formation of Ag metal particles also enhance the conductivity of the electrode. As a result of the Ag+-Ag0 synergistic effect, Ag–MnO2 has obtained high rate performance (275.6 mA·h·g–1 at 200 mA·g–1) and excellent cycle stability (98.8% capacity retention over 600 cycles at 1000 mA·g–1). This provides insights for the pre-inserted Ag+ to improve the electrochemical performance of MnO2.

To fabricate an efficient two-component Z-scheme system for visible light induced overall water splitting, CdS/WO 3 nanocomposites , with cubic CdS nanoparticles grown on the surface of hexagonal WO 3 nanorods , were prepared via a facile precipitation of Cd 2+ with S 2− in the presence of pre-obtained hexagonal WO 3 nanorods. MnO 2 and MoS 2 , the co-catalysts for O 2 and H 2 generation respectively, were selectively deposited on WO 3 and CdS in the CdS/WO 3 nanocomposites. The resultant MoS 2 –CdS/WO 3 –MnO 2 composites show photocatalytic activity for overall water splitting under visible light, with an optimized performance observed over 2.0%MoS 2 -0.2 CdS/WO 3 -1.0%MnO 2 . The visible light induced overall water splitting over MoS 2 –CdS/WO 3 –MnO 2 nanocomposites can be attributed to the presence of a Z-scheme charge transfer pathway in the CdS/WO 3 nanocomposites, ie, the transfer of the photo-generated electrons from the CB of WO 3 to the VB of CdS to recombine with the photo-generated holes through an efficient interface between cubic CdS and hexagonal WO 3 . The left photo-generated holes in VB of WO 3 and the photo-generated electrons in CB of CdS therefore can accomplish the water oxidation and water reduction simultaneously, with the assistance of the surface deposited cocatalysts (MnO 2 and MoS 2 ). This work demonstrated the great potential of fabricating the two-component direct Z-scheme photocatalytic systems for overall water splitting from two semiconductors with a staggered band structure .

An ultrasensitive and turn off-on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform was constructed by using manganese dioxide carboxylated graphitic carbon nitride (MnO2/C-g-C3N4) nanocomposite as the probe for L-cysteine (CySH) detection. In this work, we synthesized the MnO2/C-g-C3N4 tags via a facile one-step method. The ECL of C-g-C3N4 nanosheet can be quenched by the MnO2 nanosheet due to electrochemiluminescence energy transfer (ECL-ET) from C-g-C3N4 to MnO2, C-g-C3N4 and MnO2 as the energy donor and energy acceptor, respectively. However, the addition of CySH would lead to the elimination of ECL-ET, resulting in sufficient recovery of ECL intensity because it reduced MnO2 to Mn2+. Under the optimized conditions, the fabricated biosensor exhibited a wide response to CySH in the range of 0.50 nM to 1.0 μM and a low detection limit of 0.18 nM. Moreover, this convenient sensing system can successfully detect CySH in real human urine samples with satisfactory recoveries, which could provide a new way to detect CySH quickly and sensitively.

Sorbent of αMnO2nanorods coating TiO2shell (denoted as αMnO2-NR@TiO2) was prepared to investigate the elemental mercury (Hg0) removal performance in the presence of SO2. Due the core-shell structure, αMnO2-NR@TiO2has a better SO2resistance when compared to αMnO2nanorods (denoted as αMnO2-NR). Kinetic studies have shown that both the sorption rates of αMnO2-NR and αMnO2-NR@TiO2, which can be described by pseudo second-order models and SO2treatment, did not change the kinetic models for both the two catalysts. In contrast, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that, after reaction in the presence of SO2, S concentration on αMnO2-NR@TiO2surface is lower than on αMnO2-NR surface, which demonstrated that TiO2shell could effectively inhibit the SO2diffusion onto MnO2surface. Thermogravimetry-differential thermosgravimetry (TG-DTG) results further pointed that SO2mainly react with TiO2forming Ti(SO4)O in αMnO2-NR@TiO2, which will protect Mn from being deactivated by SO2. These results were the reason for the better SO2resistance of αMnO2-NR@TiO2.Keywords:core-shell structure;αMnO2nanorods;elemental mercury removal;SO2resistance

Chemo-photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy have a great promise for enhanced tumor treatment effect for integration of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and O 2 generation. Hereby, a smart tumor environment (TME) responsive theranostic agent based on CuS@mSiO 2 @MnO 2 nanocomposites was fabricated by a facile method. When the nanocomposites entered tumor, the drug release was triggered by multi-model response of NIR irradiation, weak acidity and high glutathione (GSH) in TME. The O 2 and toxic •OH were generated from H 2 O 2 in TME through catalyzing by MnO 2 , which relieved hypoxia and enhanced the effect of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meanwhile, the generated Mn 2+ in TME was used to monitor the nanocomposites delivery by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Also, the excellent photothermal therapy effect could be triggered by NIR irradiation for CuS core. More importantly, the growth of tumors was greatly inhibited by the synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy and CDT. This work may open a wide route for tumor environment responsive theranostic, including relieving hypoxia, chemo-photothermal therapy, CDT and MR imaging.

Background Existing therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is always affected by some resistance factors from tumour environment (TME), such as hypoxia and the antioxidant defense system.Purpose This study aims at developing a cascaded intelligent multifunctional nanoplatforms to modulate the TME resistance for synergistically enhanced chemo- and photodynamic therapies. Methods In this study, we synthesised hollow manganese dioxide nanoparticles (HMDNs) loaded with the hydrophilic chemotherapeutic drug (acriflavine, ACF) and the hydrophobic photosensitizer (chlorine6, Ce6), which was further encapsulated by pH-sensitive liposome to form core-shell nanocomposite, with surface modified with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide to achieve tumour targeting. Results After uptake by tumour cells, the liposome shell was rapidly degraded by the low pH, and the inner core could be released from the liposome. Then, the released HMDNs/ACF/Ce6 would be dissociated by low pH and high levels of intracellular GSH within TME to release encapsulated drugs, thereby resulting in synergistic effects of chemotherapy and PDT. Meanwhile, the released ACF could bind with HIF-1a and then inhibit the expression levels of HIF-1’s downstream signalling molecules P-gp and VEGF, which could further strengthen the antitumor effects. As a result, HMDNs/ACF/Ce6@Lipo-RGD NPs with laser irradiation exhibited superior anti-tumour therapeutic efficiency.
