Eco-friendly flame-retardant bamboo fiber/polypropylene composite based on the immobilization of halloysite nanotubes by tannic acid-Fe3+ complex

Xi Yu,Lu He,Xiaofeng Zhang,Gege Bao,Rong Zhang,Xiaobei Jin,Daochun Qin

Bamboo fibers (BF), as an important sustainable natural material, are becoming a hot alternative to synthetic fibers for the reinforcement of polypropylene (PP)-based composites. However, the weak interfacial compatibility between BF and PP as matrix and their inherent flammability limit the practical application of BF/PP composites (BPC). Here, a fire-safe BPC was fabricated by constructing flame-retardant interfacial layers containing tannic acid (TA)-Fe 3+ complex and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the fiber matrix followed by a hot-pressing process. The results showed that the interfacial chelating of TA with Fe 3+ improved the dispersion of HNTs on the fibers and the interfacial interactions within the fiber matrix, resulting in the as-fabricated composite with significantly improved mechanical properties and water resistance. In addition, the flame-retardant composite exhibited higher thermal stability and enhanced residual char content. Moreover, the composite possessed significant flame-retardant performances with a reduction of 23.75 % in the total heat release and 32.44 % in the total smoke production, respectively, owing to the flame retarding in gaseous phase and condensed phase of TA-Fe 3+ @HNTs layers. This work offers a green and eco-friendly strategy to address the inherent problems of BPC material in terms of fire safety and interfacial compatibility, thus broadening their applications in the automotive interior and construction industries.

Compartmentalized co-immobilization of cellulase and cellobiose phosphorylase within zeolitic imidazolate framework efficiently synthesizes 1-p-Glc: Glycosylation of 18FDG

Jingjie Gao,Shaowei Bai,Fan Wang,Liangzhen Yang,Yufeng Hu,Yuhuan Yang,Bing Bai,Zuoming Zhang

Enzymatic glycosylation is an efficient and biocompatible approach to enhance natural product bioavailability. Cellobiose phosphorylase, a novel glycosyltransferase, utilizes 1-phospho-glucose (1-p-Glc) as a glycosyl donor for regioselective glycosylation of various natural substrates. However, the high cost of 1-p-Glc limits the economic feasibility of the process. Thus, a dual-enzyme cascade system involving cellulase Ac Cel9A and cellobiose phosphorylase Cb CBP using a co-immobilization strategy was developed to overcome this challenge. The system utilizes low-cost carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for continuous 1-p-Glc production, which was then used in the fluorodeoxy glucose (FDG) glycosylation to generate fluorodeoxy cellobiose (FDC), which potentially traces fungal infections. The compartmentalized co-immobilization of the two enzymes within the internal and external regions of a porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) carrier enhanced the overall stability of the dual-enzyme system. The immobilized enzymes retained approximately 63.3 % activity after seven reuse cycles and 74 % catalytic efficiency after 12 days of storage at room temperature. Therefore, the developed co-immobilized multi-enzyme system holds significant potential for industrial biocatalysis applications.

Immobilization of Au nanoparticles on black phosphorus modified spherical covalent organic frameworks for the flow-through reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Ning Wang,Xiaole Qi,Fengyan Xiao

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), due to their unique structure and morphology, manifest great potential as active substrates to support noble metals for sustainable catalytic applications. However, it is still a challenge for efficient and effective catalysis using these kinds of COFs-based catalysts. Here, black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets modified spherical COFs (SCOFs) were synthesized, followed by the immobilization of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) to fabricate Au NPs/BP/SCOFs microspheres . The as-prepared Au NPs/BP/SCOFs microspheres were then filled in a column for the continuous catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol. A fast and highly efficient flow-through catalysis of 4-nitrophenol with a reduction efficiency of 99 % under the flux of 2500 L m −2 h −1 was obtained. Furthermore, a stable catalytic performance under flow-through process was exhibited with only 0.13 wt% of total Au NPs releasing after testing for 24 h. The strategy for designing COFs-based substrates with enhanced electron transfer and controllable morphology would develop a new route to promote the application of these kinds of COFs-based catalysts.

Oriented immobilization of antibodies through peptide ligands for ultrasensitive detection of gastrin 17 in human serum via lateral flow immunoassay

Xintong Li,Jiale Cui,Jin Li,Yulian Wang,Guoqing Shi

Gastrin 17 (G-17) is a major biomarker for the diagnosis of gastric cancer. As the serum concentrations of gastrin are low, highly sensitive detection methods are needed. Previous studies have shown that oriented immobilization of detection antibodies can improve the sensitivity of lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) methods. Herein, the antibody binding capacity of four Fc-specific peptides reported in different studies was evaluated, and two peptides with better binding potency were further modified with cysteine or the peptide GAC at their C-terminus. The peptide FYWHCLDEGAC exhibited the highest antibody binding capacity and was applied to directly immobilize the anti-G-17 antibody on microspheres with carboxyl-functionalized surfaces and europium-based time-resolved fluorescence. An LFIA method was developed to detect G-17 in human serum, and the limit of detection (LOD) of this method for G-17 was 0.08 pmol L -1 , which was 10 times less than that of the nonoriented immobilization method. The working range of this method is 0.27 ∼ 600 pmol L -1 , with a recovery rate of 85.2 % −106.7 % and a CV value less than 12.4 %. This method is easy to use, and the total detection process takes less than 20 min. The test results for the actual serum samples were consistent with the commercial kit results (R 2  > 0.95), demonstrating that the method can be utilized for point-of-care testing of G-17. This approach to orientedly immobilize antibodies on nanomaterials can be used to develop sensitive LFIA methods for various molecules.

A Comparative Study of Structural Contribution to Biocidability via Immobilization of Fluorinated and Nonfluorinated Quaternary Ammonium Salts on Top Surfaces

Qiuxia Han,Xinyi Jia,Yanmeng Xu,Fei Wang,Qiang Zhang,Yong Chen

Higher biocidability of fluorinated quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) is usually contributed to its preferential segregation to the surface to better contact with and kill bacteria. However, whether its structure also elicits better performance is still unclear. Herein, the same amount of a fluorinated QAS and its nonfluorinated counterpart are both immobilized on the top surface to eliminate the effect of concentration distribution to only study their structure–biocidability relationship. Briefly, the fluorinated and nonfluorinated QASs were synthesized by quaternization of N,N-dimethylethanolamine with 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl bromide that was prepared by bromination of 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethanol and 1-bromodecane, respectively. Polystyrene (PS) and diblock copolymer poly(styrene)-b-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PS-PtBA) were successively spin coated on SiO2 wafers at different concentrations to form bilayer structures that have a PS base layer and a PtBA top layer. The tert-butyl acrylate groups of the PtBA layer of 0.9 nm were converted to carboxylic acid groups with trifluoroacetic acid for respective esterification with the two hydroxy-containing QASs. It was observed that the fluorinated and nonfluorinated surfaces fabricated at the maximum comparable esterification yield of 63.5% fully eradicated ∼104 CFU of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in 120 and 150 min, respectively, indicating that the fluorocarbon chain is more biocidal through better interpenetration into bacterial membranes. Immobilization of a functionality on top surface provides a universal strategy to study its structural contribution to activity without interference of the concentration distribution.

The oxidation of waste resins catalyzed by zinc and the efficient immobilization of sulfur in KOH assisted Na2CO3-K2CO3 melt

Xin Liu,Yong-De Yan,Yun Xue,Yue-Lin Wang,Qing-Guo Zhang,Guan-Qing Hu,Fu-Qiu Ma,Jing-Ping Wang

Waste resins produced from nuclear facilities operation always contain organic sulfur and radioisotope 65 Zn, which pose a significant threat for the ecological environment. This study proposed comparative research for treating cation exchange resins doped with Zn 2+ (Zn-CERs) in Na 2 CO 3 -K 2 CO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 -K 2 CO 3 -KOH. The enhanced removal effect of sulfur and Zn 2+ by KOH addition was explored. The energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out to investigate the element distribution and chemical states of C, O, S and Zn on Zn-CERs. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) showed that the oxidation process of Zn-CERs was basically divided into three steps, and Zn 2+ acted as a catalyst for S-C destruction. The relatively mild reaction of Zn-CERs in Na 2 CO 3 -K 2 CO 3 -KOH largely avoids the escape of harmful gases (H 2 S and SO 2 ) caused by the overreaction. The participation of KOH could promote the sulfation of sulfides and sulfites, and the transformational SO 4 2− content reaches a maximum value (26.51 %) at 800 °C. When the temperatures above 700 °C, Zn 2+ and K + combines with SO 4 2− to form K 2 Zn 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . The proposed enhanced molten salt oxidation (MSO) system had excellent retention rates of Zn (99.56 %) and S (87.39 %) at 800 °C, which provides further technical references for the removal of organic sulfur and heavy metals.

Portable paper-based sensing device by bimetallic layered hydroxide immobilization for visual analysis of uric acid on a smartphone platform

Shu Zhu,Chonghui Wei,Yuxiang Xia,Kewei Yu,Meiyun Chen,Yujie Zhao,Xingyu Luo

Uric acid (UA) is an important biomarker for assessing human health. The abnormal contents of UA in biological fluids are closely involved with many diseases. Although conventional methods for UA analysis with satisfied detection performances have been well-designed, they are still restricted by bulky instrument requirements and insufficiency during the detection processes. Herein, we have built a cellulose paper-based nanozyme detection platform (CF-cPADs) by immobilizing the cobalt-iron layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH) for point-of-care (POC) detection of UA. In this assay, CoFe LDH with peroxidase (POD)-like activity has been synthesized to be immobilized onto the cellulose paper, and then the uricase (Uox) and CoFe LDH involved cascaded enzymatic reaction has been designed to realize the conversion from UA contents to colorimetric signals, which can be further analyzed by smartphone. The highly sensitive, stable, and reproducible CF-cPADs exhibit a wide linear range varied from 1 to 100 μM with a comparable limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.92 μM for satisfying UA analysis in real samples. This approach can provide new insights into the development of cost-effective, portable, rapid, easy-to-use, and on-site detection of biomarkers. It will overcome the drawbacks in clinical diagnosis which are highly dependent on the professionals and analytical instruments.

Study on synthesis of rare ginsenoside Rh2 by one-step purification and immobilization of glycosyltransferase from magnetic Ni-based MOF

Junsong Yue,Xiaochen Liu,Zhansheng Wu,Zhiyan Li,Jianwen Wang,Min Tu,Huaiqi Shi

To solve the problem that free glycosyltransferase is difficult to isolate and reuse in ginsenoside Rh2 catalysis and synthesis. In this study, we developed a magnetic nickel-based metal-organic framework (MOF) material (Fe 3 O 4/ PDA@MOF) to enable the separation of recombinant glycosyl transferase (UGT) directly from crude enzyme solutions, while simultaneously immobilizing it by utilizing the specific adsorption of Ni 2+ ions to His-tag. Our investigations demonstrated that the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA@MOF@UGT was successfully prepared, which not only maintained enzyme activity, but was reused by low-cost magnetic separation and exhibited enhanced enzyme loading and stability. Following thorough research and optimization, the immobilized enzyme achieved a rare ginsenoside Rh2 concentration of 69.68 µg/mL under optimal conditions, with an initial activity of 61.99 % after six cycles. This cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable biocomposite holds significant promise for industrial applications in enzyme purification and catalytic synthesis of ginsenoside.

Fe(II)-induced phase transformation of La-substituted ferrihydrite significantly influences the reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) in soils

Changjin Liang,Honghai Wu,Yaowei Li,Yufeng Guan

Ferrihydrite (Fh) can usually transform into phases with higher crystallinities. This may greatly alter Fh adsorption capacity for chromium ions, thereby affecting their immobilizations and fates. Foreign elements [e.g., lanthanum (La)] as impurities can become incorporated into Fh. Herein, the effect of La-substitution into Fh and the influence of the presence of Cr(VI) on Fh phase transformation and fate of Cr(VI) were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other test methods were employed to probe phase changes after the Fe(II)-induced La-substituted Fh (La-Fh) transformations. At pH 5.5, no neoformed phase was observed until 7 d for La-Fh or pure Fh at 1 mM Fe(II) aq, but all La-Fh systems underwent transformations at 5 mM Fe(II)aq. A low pH and Fe(II)aq level favored lepidocrocite (Lp) to form, whereas goethite (Gt) was the predominant phase rather than Lp as pH increased to 7.2 with higher level Fe(II)aq. However, the La-substitution inhibits the La-Fh transformation rate and path. This made 5 % La-Fh transformed to Lp after 30 d at pH 7.2 and 1 mM Fe(II)aq. The La-release was present to some extent during the transformation process. Either the inhibition to La-Fh transformation or the La-slow release favors the retention of early-adsorbed Cr(VI) on iron-mineral surface. The added Cr(VI) might promote the La-Fh transformation even under a lower-level Fe(II), primarily attributed to the rapid reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by Fe(II), which produced more liable Fe(III) in addition to the Cr(III) that can improve the mineral conductivity, thereby enhancing the La-Fh transformation. Mechanisms responsible for the Fe(II)-induced La-Fh transformation companying the La slow-release are proposed to provide insights into the reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) under anaerobic conditions, thus demonstrating that La-Fh is a promising material for application in Cr-contaminated site remediation.

Utilization of CoSe2-loaded carbon nanofibers for enhancing separator performance in lithium-sulfur batteries: Polysulfide immobilization and redox conversion enhancement

Yingjie Zhang,Yuzheng Li,Chengxiao Xu,Daming Li,Jun Cao,Peipei Huo

Lithium‑sulfur batteries (LSBs) are recognized as promising candidates for the next generation of secondary batteries due to their high energy density, high theoretical capacity, and low environmental impact. However, the poor electrical conductivity of sulfur and Li 2 S, the “shuttle effect” of polysulfides, and the slow kinetics of redox reactions have significantly hindered the practical application of LSBs. In this work, CoSe 2 -loaded carbon nanofibers (CoSe 2 @CNF) derived from metal-organic frameworks were successfully prepared by electrospinning and used as a functional coating on the polypropylene separator. The three-dimensional network structure of CNFs not only improves the electrical conductivity of the material but also provides channels to facilitate ion and electron transport, while the CoSe 2 particles distributed on the surface effectively act as adsorption and catalytic active sites for lithium polysulfides. Under the synergistic effect, the CoSe 2 @CNF-modified separator suppressed the shuttle effect and significantly enhanced the kinetics of redox reactions. The LSBs assembled with CoSe 2 @CNF-modified separator exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, achieving an initial capacity of 1445.6 mAh g −1 at 0.5C and maintaining a discharge specific capacity of 849.5 mAh g −1 after 275 cycles.

Coordination-driven immobilization of his-tagged superoxide dismutase fusion protein on UIO-66-NH2 for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production

Xinnan Ma,Juan Han,Jiacong Wu,Yang Zhou,Chunmei Li,Lei Wang,Yang Lu,Yun Wang

Efficiently enhancing hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production via photocatalysis remains challenging. This study employed genetic engineering to express His-tagged superoxide dismutase (His-SOD), which was selectively anchored onto the coordinatively unsaturated metal sites of etched UIO-66-NH₂ (UIO-66-NH 2 etch ) through coordination-driven assembly. The synergistic effect between His-SOD and UIO-66-NH 2 etch significantly enhanced both the stability and substrate affinity of the enzyme, while simultaneously boosting the photocatalytic activity of the MOF. Compared to its free counterpart, the immobilized His-SOD exhibits a 62 % increase in catalytic efficiency and a more than threefold extension in thermal deactivation half-life. The fabricated UIO-66-NH 2 etch @His-SOD composite achieved an impressive H 2 O 2 production rate of 3890.37 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , exceeding that of the pristine UIO-66-NH 2 by over 2.5 times within 1 h and maintaining a 1.7-fold enhancement after 4 h. Owing to SOD's inherent superior antioxidative capabilities, the composite material demonstrates exceptional recyclability, retaining 95 % of its initial catalytic activity after four consecutive cycles. This study achieves specific immobilization of functionalized fusion proteins onto photocatalysts, and represents the first introduction of SOD into photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis. This advancement provides valuable insights for the future integration of biocatalysts and synthetic photocatalysts, opening new avenue for research on photo-enzyme coupled catalysis.

Optimal Si/Al molar ratio achieves ultra-high CeO2 loading and enhanced stability for nuclear waste immobilization in aluminosilicate glasses

Pan Tan,Jiaqin Wei,Sihong Luo,Guilin Wei,Xiaoan Li,Lijing Huang,Xirui Lu,Xiaoyan Shu

Glass matrices with high waste load capacity, stability, and economic viability holds significant technological implications for efficient and safe nuclear waste immobilization. Aluminosilicate glasses with various Si/Al molar ratios were successfully prepared by incorporating Al 2 O 3 into natural granite, effectively enabling precise regulation of the Si/Al ratios and overcoming the challenge of achieving complete vitrification. Here, we report a glass waste form with ultra-high CeO 2 loading (up to 20 wt .%) that exhibits excellent structural stability. At a Si/Al molar ratio of 3:1, cerium can incorporate into the glass network by forming Ce-O bonds through coordination with oxygen atoms in the [AlO 6 ] units. [AlO 6 ] is converted to more stable [AlO 4 ], thereby enhancing the stability of the glass. Up to 20 wt .% CeO 2 (9.62 mol%) can be fully incorporated into the glass system, where approximately 79.71 % of the bridging oxygen atoms form stable Si-O-Si and [AlO 4 ] units, contributing to a structurally robust glass network. The Ce-O bond length in the glass matrix is shorter (2.27 Å) than in CeO 2 , confirming enhanced coordination stability and aligning with superior chemical durability and mechanical properties. This work highlights the critical role of the Si/Al molar ratio and establishes low-cost granite could serve as a viable host material for nuclear waste immobilization.
