Although there have been numerous reports on broadband near-infrared (NIR) emitting phosphors, their emissions are mainly concentrated in the range of 700–1000 nm (NIR-I). Herein, we successfully synthesized a broadband near-infrared phosphor CaMgGeO4:Cr4+(CMG:Cr4+) with an emission in the range of 1000–1600 nm (NIR-II). The introduction of Er3+ ions into CMG:Cr4+ resulted in a wider near-infrared emission phosphor CaMgGeO4:Cr4+,Er3+ (fwhm = 361 nm), compensating for the luminescence of 1500–1600 nm. More importantly, an energy transfer from Cr4+ to Er3+ ions has been discovered. Furthermore, a NIR pc-LED was fabricated by combining the CMG:Cr4+,Er3+ phosphor with a 590 nm chip. The changes in intensity and profile of the transmission spectra of light passing through different liquids reveal its potential application in organic compound recognition. This work opens a direction for the development of NIR-II phosphors.

In fresh maize breeding, developing robust and accurate near-infrared (NIR) calibration models traditionally requires significant time, cost, and labor. To address these challenges, a novel machine learning approach is proposed using a Prediction-Correction Neural Network (PCNN) that enables effective modeling from small sample sets augmented with synthetic data based on NIR spectroscopy. For key quality traits such as amylopectin, protein, crude fiber, and total sugar, the PCNN achieved residual predictive deviation (RPD) values between 2.821 and 4.862, and coefficients of determination ( R V 2 $R_V^2$ ) ranging from 0.869 to 0.951, using an average of only 32 calibration samples. For sugars including fructose, glucose, and sucrose, the model yielded RPD >2 and R V 2 ≥ 0.747 $R_V^2 \ge 0.747$ with just 62 samples. The PCNN method has also been successfully applied to NIR model development for small sample sets in intact kernel of fresh maize and other crops, including forage maize, rice, wheat, and barley. Compared to Partial Least Squares (PLS) and traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), PCNN delivered RPD improvements of 38.99%−63.20% over PLS and 7.07%−25.82% over ANN. These results highlight the PCNN's high efficiency and accuracy, offering a scalable and cost-effective solution for rapid quality evaluation in fresh maize and other cereals.

Assessing the integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) is critical, as it serves to protect developing sperm cells by creating a protective environment against toxins and pathogens. Here, we optimize a near-infrared (NIR) dye for in situ binding of endogenous albumin or constructing NIR-II fluorescent proteins (FPs) based on exogenous albumin, affording non-invasive in vivo imaging of BTB disruption with tunable time windows. To further enhance the targeting capability of FPs, we employ a site-directed mutagenesis (SDM) strategy to develop the mutant albumin with increased binding efficiency to CO-1080 at room temperature, which serves as a specialized exogenous albumin for accelerating the imaging window of BTB disruption. Given the common drawbacks of traditional modalities for assessing BTB integrity, non-invasive and real-time NIR-II imaging is an effective method for investigating the testicular microenvironment as well as understanding testicular physiology and pathology.

Maxillofacial trauma is an infection and oxidative stress-induced damage to maxillofacial area related cells. Increasing evidences have suggested that therapeutic strategies with controllable anti-infective and anti-inflammatory capabilities hold great potentials in the clinical treatment of maxillofacial trauma. Herein, we reported an infectious microenvironment responsive bimetallic sulfide (FeCuS x , FCS) combining with near infrared (NIR) irradiation for maxillofacial trauma therapy. In cellular levels, FCS exhibited the most efficient antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, cell migration, and angiogenesis behaviors through down-regulating the inflammatory factor (iNOS) expression level, up-regulating anti-inflammatory factors (Arg-1 and TGF-β) expression level, inducing macrophages M2 polarization (CD86 down-regulation and CD206 up-regulation), and promoting tissue repair factors (CD31) expression level. Besides, it presented the excellent antibacterial ability of Escherichia coli (99.74%) and MRSA (99.78%) for FCS + NIR. Significantly, it also confirmed that FCS + NIR presented the excellent functions of inhibiting wound infections, decreasing wound inflammation, as well as promoting trauma tissue repairing. Altogether, it had developed the strategy of FCS + NIR for the synergistic enhancement of infectious maxillofacial trauma healing, could also serve as a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of infectious diseases. The impact of encapsulating gemcitabine (GEM) into nanoparticles on its delivery remains underexplored, with the potential benefits of targeted drug delivery and stimuli-responsive release yet to be fully clarified. Herein, we designed a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive polymeric nanoparticle, ZnPc@P(PEG-CMA-TKGEM), which integrates reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cell imaging capabilities. The self-assembled polymeric micelles exhibit a hydrodynamic size of ~134 nm. Under NIR irradiation, the cumulative drug release rate reaches 51% within 48 h, which is three times higher than that of the non-irradiated control group. In cytotoxicity assays, the cell viability of the NIR-irradiated drug-loaded group is approximately 17%, while that of the NIR-irradiated blank group (without drug loading) remains above 80%. These results confirm that the nanocarriers successfully deliver GEM to target cells and achieve controlled drug release via NIR stimulation.

Food spoilage caused by microbial proliferation and moisture loss remains a critical challenge in postharvest management. This study proposes a smart hydrogel system integrating photothermal-responsive Pickering emulsions and thermo-sensitive biopolymers to achieve on-demand antimicrobial release and water retention. The Pickering emulsion, stabilized by indocyanine green (ICG)-loaded halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), serves as an antimicrobial depot of cinnamaldehyde (Cin). Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, ICG converts light energy into heat, triggering both thermal-enhanced Cin volatilization and sol-gel transition of the κ-carrageenan/gelatin (CG) hydrogel matrix. This dual-action mechanism enables: (i) Spatiotemporal control: NIR exposure achieves precise Cin release, with cumulative release increasing to 21.5 %; (ii) Dual-mode antibacterial efficacy: The system exhibits a 3.12 cm inhibition zone against S. aureus and complete suppression of Penicillium expansum growth through combined contact and vapor-phase antimicrobial activity. (iii) Superior preservation performance: Grapes packaged with the hydrogel maintain 98.92 % initial weight after 14 days, with retained firmness, stable pH, and minimal soluble solids loss. By synergizing photothermal conversion, thermal-responsive hydrogel dynamics, and natural antimicrobials, this work establishes a non-contact preservation platform that extends grape shelf life by 250 %, demonstrating significant potential for intelligent food packaging applications.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) causes renal tubular damage, driven primarily by mitochondrial dysfunction and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative stress, leading to a cellular energy crisis. The physiological architecture of the kidney hampers targeted drug delivery, rendering metabolic restoration a therapeutic challenge. To address this, we developed a second near-infrared (NIR-II) light-driven, bioenergetic nanoplatform (UCTR) that leverages upconversion nanoparticle (UCNPs)-enhanced photosynthesis for energy replenishment and mitochondrial repair in AKI. The UCTR consists of thylakoid membrane (TM)-encapsulated UCNPs cloaked with activated renal tubular epithelial cell membranes (RECM), enabling targeted accumulation in injured tubules. The UCNPs convert deep-tissue-penetrating NIR-II light into visible wavelengths, activating photosynthetic adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) synthesis within the TM component under irradiation. This exogenous bioenergetic supply mitigates hypoxia-induced mitochondrial energy deficits, while the AMPK/PGC-1α pathway is simultaneously activated to restore the mitochondrial membrane potential. Moreover, UCTR synergizes the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of plantain, accelerating tubular repair.

Tumor microenvironment, characterized by dense extracellular matrix and severe hypoxia, has caused pronounced resistance to photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, it has designed an artificial nitric oxide (NO) nanotractor with a unique “motor-cargo” structure, where a photoswitching upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) core serves as the optical engine to harvest NIR light and asymmetrically coated mesoporous silica (SiO 2 ) shell acts as a cargo unit to load nitric oxide (NO) fuel molecule (RBS, Roussin's black salt) and PDT photosensitizer (ZnPc, zinc phthalocyanine). Upon illumination by 980 nm light, the UCNP emits blue light to excite RBS salt and release NO gas. On one hand, NO is used as the driving force to propel the particle with a high speed of ≈194 µm s −1 that generates significant rupture stress (over 0.95 kPa) on cell membrane to promote cellular endocytosis and intratumoral penetration. On the other hand, NO enables to alleviate tumor hypoxia by inhibiting cellular respiration as an oxygen conserver. When the excitation is subsequently switched to 808 nm light, the UCNP emits red light, triggering ZnPc to produce large amount of reactive oxygen species for PDT treatment. This study explores Janus-typed nanostructures for cell-particle interaction and gas-assisted phototherapy, opening avenues for versatile bioapplications.

Rare-earth nanoparticles (RE NPs) with narrow long wavelength emissions have been recently investigated for their potential application for fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II). Previously these RE NPs have a very limited application in the diagnosis and treatment of deep-seated tumors such as brain tumors, due to their weak fluorescence in the range of 1300–1700 nm. Herein, we report a significant enhancement of more than 10 times regular emission of NaNdF 4 nanoparticles at 1340 nm wavelength by coating them with an inert layer of NaLuF 4 , followed by sensitizing with a near-infrared dye (IR-808). We deliver these highly bright nanoparticles into the brain by using focused ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and then detect the orthotopic glioblastoma by fluorescence imaging at 1340 nm. The images obtained from long wavelength fluorescence ( i.e. 1340 nm) exhibited better resolution and contrast compared to the short wavelength fluorescence ( i.e. 1060 nm). Our study not only provides insights for enhancing often overlooked emissions of rare-earth nanoparticles for NIR-II fluorescence imaging of deep-seated tumors, but also demonstrates great potential of focused ultrasound based technology in delivering nanotheranostic agents.

Melanoma is a highly invasive and metastatic malignant skin tumor. Recently, immunogenic cell death (ICD) has attracted great attention as a promising approach to immunotherapy. However, efficiently and comprehensively activating ICD throughout the dense tumor tissue is a key challenge. Herein, we designed a NIR II light-driven asymmetric nanomotor drug delivery system (Sor@CS-ZIF-8@MO1) to achieve deep penetration into the tumor tissue. By combining photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) to synergistically induce ICD, the immunotherapeutic efficacy against melanoma is enhanced. The research results showed that Sor@CS-ZIF-8@MO1 exhibited good photothermal performance and motor-driven performance, and was able to effectively penetrate 3D tumor cell spheroids deeply. Sor@CS-ZIF-8@MO1 targeted tumor tissues through mannose and controllably released sorafenib under the low pH conditions in tumor tissues and photothermal stimulation, thereby promoting tumor tissue angiogenesis to improve its hypoxic microenvironment and effectively enhancing the CDT effect induced by Cu +/2+ . This could synergistically enhance the ICD of tumor cells with the PTT. Meanwhile, the tumor-associated antigens released by ICD, together with ovalbumin and mannose, stimulated immune response, reshaped the tumor immune microenvironment, enhanced tumor immunity, and ultimately effectively inhibited the growth and metastasis of melanoma tumors. In this work, a nanomotor delivery system that integrates multiple modalities and is capable of deeply penetrating tumor tissues to efficiently and comprehensively induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) has been designed, providing a new strategy to address the problem of insufficient induction of ICD in melanoma immunotherapy.

Currently, cuproptosis mainly focuses on the Cu2+ induced morphology of mitochondria (Mito), the observation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-related Cu2+ content in cuproptosis is relatively lacking. Herein, we develop a hydroxyflavone (HF) based NIR excited fluorescent probe, BHCO, for exhibiting specific recognition of Cu2+. BHCO can accurately locate in ER and detect Cu2+ content in cuproptosis process. The two-photon fluorescence nature of BHCO enables to track both ferroptosis and cuproptosis processes with high resolution. Furthermore, BHCO can upgrade reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 720 nm excitation, which facilitates ferroptosis occurrence. We firmly convince the nonlinear optical (NLO) small molecules could provide a valid tool for rapid tumors elimination through synergistic ferroptosis and cuproptosis.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has gained significant attention as a promising cancer treatment due to its low systemic toxicity, minimal invasiveness, and other advantages. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence have emerged as ideal photothermal agents (PTAs), offering key benefits such as high biosafety, excellent biocompatibility, and precise tumor theranostics. Nevertheless, achieving an optimal balance between radiation-mediated NIR-II fluorescence imaging and non-radiation NIR-PTT poses a considerable challenge in designing efficient NIR-II AIEgens. In this work, we employed side chain engineering by strategically grafting n -hexyl onto the π-bridge of a conjugated D-π-A-π-D structure, leading to the development of four new AIEgens ( BQ1 ∼ BQ4 ). These compounds feature 6,7-diphenyl- [1,2,5] thiadiazolo [3,4- g ] quinoxaline as the acceptor, thiophene as the π-bridge, and phenothiazine as the donor. This molecular design enables precise regulation of backbone distortion, effectively balancing fluorescence emission and photothermal conversion. Among them, BQ1 , BQ3 , and BQ4 exhibited strong fluorescence, longer emission wavelengths, and superior photothermal conversion efficiencies (PCEs) (59.2%, 57.8%, 52% respectively), whereas BQ2 , with greater molecular distortion, showed a lower PCE of 33.4%. Notably, BQ1 nanoparticles demonstrated outstanding photothermal conversion, prolonged tumor retention, strong resistance to photobleaching in vitro and in vivo , and NIR-II imaging capability at 1055 nm. This study introduces a novel strategy for optimizing NIR-II/AIE PTAs through precise conformational control via strategic n -hexyl positioning, which remains unreported to date.
