Highly active Ag clusters stabilized on TiO2 nanocrystals for catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol

Xin Wang,Zhe Zhao,Dingrong Ou,Baofeng Tu,Daan Cui,Xuming Wei,Mojie Cheng

Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites comprising of Ag clusters on TiO 2 nanocrystal surfaces are of great significance in catalysts and advanced functional materials. Herein a novel method to synthesize Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites with Ag clusters under 2   nm on TiO 2 nanocrystal surfaces have been developed. The success of this method relies on a silver mirror reaction in toluene, which refers to the reduction of silver-dodecylamine complexes by acetaldehyde in the presence of mono-dispersed TiO 2 nanocrystals. The prepared Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites have been characterized by FT-IR spectra, UV–vis absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, ultra high resolution scanning electron microscope (Ultra-HRSEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Catalytic activity of Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites is evaluated for the reduction of p -nitrophenol (4-NP) into p -aminophenol (4-AP) by NaBH 4 . Results demonstrate that Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites have shown an outstanding catalytic activity as well as a good stability in successive reduction of 4-NP. Noticeably, TOF of Ag/TiO 2 -0.75 nanocomposites obtained in this work is the highest among Ag based catalysts previously reported.

Enhanced selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CO over Ag/CdS nanocomposites under visible light

Zezhou Zhu,Jiani Qin,Min Jiang,Zhengxin Ding,Yidong Hou

Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide can convert chemically inert carbon dioxide into useful chemical fuel in a mild manner. Herein, Ag-CdS nanocomposites were prepared by photodeposition method and examined for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction under visible light. Meanwhile, the nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, DRS and PL in detail. The results show that, the deposition of Ag improves the photocatalytic performance of CdS, especially in the selectivity of CO 2 -to-CO. The highest photocatalytic activity is achieved over 1.0   wt.% Ag/CdS, with an increase by 3 times in comparison to CdS. In this reaction system, Ag can serve as electron trap as well as active site for CO 2 reduction, which is probably responsible for the enhanced activity and selectivity of CO 2 to CO over Ag/CdS. The possible mechanism of CO 2 photoreduction over Ag/CdS was proposed in view of the abovementioned analysis.

Synthesis and characterization of Ag@Cu nano/microstructure ordered arrays as SERS-active substrates

Pinhua Zhang,Guangliang Cui,Chuanhai Xiao,Mingzhe Zhang,Li Chen,Changmin Shi

We fabricated an Ag decorated Cu (Ag@Cu) nano/microstructure ordered array by facile template-free 2D electrodeposition combined with a galvanic reduction method for SERS applications. The Cu nano/microstructure ordered arrays were first synthesized by a 2D electrodeposition method, then Ag nanocubes were decorated on the arrays by galvanic reduction without any capping agent. The pollution-free surface and edge-to-face heterostructure of Ag nanocubes and Cu nano/microstructure arrays provide the powerful field-enhancements for SERS performance. The results verified that the Ag@Cu nano/microstructure ordered arrays have excellent activity for 4-Mercaptopyridine, and the sensitivity limit is as low as 10−8 M. Therefore, this facile route provides a useful platform for the fabrication of a SERS substrate based on nano/microstructure ordered arrays.

The visible light photocatalytic activity enhancement of cotton cellulose nanofibers/In2S3/Ag–CdS nanocomposites

Jiaqi Pan,Jing Li,Xiufang Zhang,Yingying Zheng,Can Cui,Zhiyan Zhu,Chaorong Li

Cotton cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs)/In2S3/Ag–CdS nanocomposites were prepared by a typical technical route which combined electrospinning and a chemical method. The results showed that the CCNFs/In2S3/Ag–CdS nanocomposites had a remarkable visible light photocatalytic property and cycling stability, which displayed a significant enhancement compared with that of pure In2S3. Through analysis, this enhancement could be mainly attributed to the multilevel structure of the composites.

Ag–Pt hollow nanoparticles anchored reduced graphene oxide composites for non-enzymatic glucose biosensor

Wang Chao,Sun Yanli,Yu Xiaohui,Ma Daqian,Zheng Jiao,Dou Peng,Cao Zhenzhen,Xu Xinhua

A novel, stable and sensitive non-enzymatic glucose biosensor based on bimetallic hollow Ag/Pt nanoparticles and the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was obtained. The hybrid of bimetallic hollow Ag/Pt nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (HAg/PtNPs-rGO) was prepared by a galvanic replacement reaction and the thermal reduction of graphene oxide. Thermal reduction has been highly effective in producing graphene-like films which can render a stable substrate for hollow Ag/Pt nanoparticles. The morphology and composition of the prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Cyclic voltammetry measurements demonstrated that the biosensor decorated by HAg/PtNPs-rGO can directly detect glucose and show a superior electro catalytic activity. The results of amperometric method showed a desirable amperometric response with a sensitivity of 129.32 μA mM −1  cm −2 , a linear range of 0.003–7.72 mM (R 2  = 0.9943), a fast response time (less than 3 s) and a low detection limit of 1.8 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the fabricated sensor also had good selectivity, reproducibility and long-term stability. The sensor modified by HAg/PtNPs-rGO could make a promising application in glucose determination.

A Facile Electrochemical Approach To Form TiO2/Ag Heterostructure Films with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Xiang Lv,Fengquan Gao,Yong Yang,Tianhe Wang

We report a simple but novel technique to prepare chemically durable TiO2/Ag films on FTO substrates via coating of P25 TiO2 with colloidal silica as a high temperature binder and subsequent electrochemical deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The porous nanostructure facilitated implantation of AgNPs by electrochemical deposition. Extensive measurements on photocatalytic activities of the films prepared under varied conditions showed that TiO2/Ag enhanced MB degradation. Possible mechanisms of such enhancement were discussed in terms of delayed recombination of photogenerated electrons/holes via Schottky barriers and beneficial effects of Surface Plasmon. Experimental results of both electrochemical impedance spectra and transient photocurrent responses on the films supported the observed photocatalytic enhancement by TiO2/Ag heterostructures. The study offers an effective technique to implant uniformly dispersed AgNPs around 3 nm in size within a porous structure and may also provide a strategy for preparations of other functional films on FTO substrates.

Novel synthesis of plasmonic Bi2Sn2O7/Ag-AgCl nanocomposite with enhanced visible light photocatalytic property

Xiaojuan Zhao,Hongda Cui,Tianhe Wang

We report a novel Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 /Ag-AgCl photocatalysts with excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic properties. The crystalline Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 was synthesized by solid-state reaction at 550   °C. Then Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 /Ag-AgCl was prepared using deposition-precipitation technique followed by photo-reduction of partial Ag + to Ag 0 nanoparticles on surface of AgCl. The photocatalysis were evaluated by degrading organic dyes under controlled conditions. The Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 /Ag-AgCl composite exhibited a much improved photocatalysis, approximately 7 times stronger than that of pure Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 , primarily due to its enhanced visible-light absorption and high separation efficiency of charge. On the basis of band structure analysis, a possible mechanism of photocatalysis enhancement for Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 /Ag-AgCl is proposed. The strong photocatalytic capability, together with simplicity of fabrication suggests Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 /Ag-AgCl composite provided in this study may have certain practical applications in water treatments. Additionally, the study implies a novel but simple methodology that may be also applicable in construction of other types of single semiconductor/plasmonic composite photocatalysts.

Morphology Control of Ag Polyhedron Nanoparticles for Cost-Effective and Fast Solar Steam Generation

Hailong Wang,Lei Miao,Sakae Tanemura

Since introduction of inorganic metallic salt serves as an inducer for modulating crystalline nucleation and overgrowth, we have synthesized highly monodispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (diameter: 48.7–411.9 nm) in the shape of polyhedral quasi-spheres via a household microwave oven. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption spectrum of AgNPs exhibits a good match to the solar spectrum in the UV to near infrared wavelength range. Consequently, AgNPs dispersed in deionized (DI) water have a great potential for efficient solar heat collecting, able to convert both hot steam and its clustering nanobubbles into macro-bubbles (macroscopic bubbles) in a fast and consecutive manner. The maximum values of solar thermal conversion efficiency, rate of steam, and diameter of the clustered macroscopic bubbles obtained in the preliminary experiments under the best conditions are 82.45%, 16.8 g/(AM1.5 · m 2 · min), and 2.4 cm, respectively. Here we show that the designated system has fast dynamics of steam generation, as well as easy and cost-effective scale-up capability, suggesting that the steam generation system using AgNPs might be feasible after further development.

Fluorescence Detection of p-Nitrophenol in Water Using Bovine Serum Albumin Capped ag Nanoclusters

Mao Mi,Deng Chun,He Yu,Ge Yili,Song Gongwu

We developed a sensitive and selective method for detection of 4-Nitrophenol (PNP) using Ag nanoclusters (NCs) as fluorescence probe. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as the template for preparing Ag NCs via wet chemistry. The fluorescence of as-prepared Ag NCs was significantly quenched in the presence of PNP, showing excellent linear relationships between the quenching degree of the fluorescence intensity and the concentrations of PNP in the range of 0.5 μM to 60 μM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was also investigated. Furthermore, this method was applied for the recognition of PNP in environmental samples.

Graphene–Ag nanohexagonal platelets-based ink with high electrical properties at low sintering temperatures

Piao Liu,Jin Ma,Sha Deng,Kai Zeng,Dunying Deng,Wei Xie,Anxian Lu

Printed-electronics inks belong to a class of novel functional conductive inks that can be used to form high-precision conducting lines or circuits on various flexible substrates. Previous studies have reported conductive inks produced by the reduction and membrane separation method for use in flexible devices. However, it remains a challenge to synthesize conductive inks with high electrical properties at low sintering temperatures, which restricts their range of applications. Herein, we prepare inkjet-printed patterns of conductive inks consisting of Ag nanohexagonal platelets (AgNHPs) as the main component and containing graphene (GE) in different contents. It is found that GE improves the electrical conductivity of the patterns when sintering is done at relatively low temperatures. For instance, when the GE content is 0.15 mg ml−1, the resistivity is the lowest. When sintering is done at 150 °C, the resistivity (2.7 × 10–6 Ω · cm) of the GE-AgNHPs conductive ink (GE: 0.15 mg ml−1) is 14% of that of the AgNHPs conductive ink; on the other hand, after sintering at 50 °C, this ratio is 2%. It is also found that, with the increase in GE content, the resistivity of the GE-AgNHPs conductive ink increases. This study on GE-AgNHPs conductive inks sintered at low temperatures should further the development of flexible touch screens.

Facile synthesis of hollow dendritic Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles for enhanced methanol oxidation efficiency

Ning Sui,Ke Wang,Xinyao Shan,Qiang Bai,Lina Wang,Hailian Xiao,Manhong Liu,Vicki L. Colvin,William W. Yu

Hollow dendritic Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles were synthesized by a double template method: Ag nanoparticles as the hard template to obtain hollow spheres by a galvanic replacement reaction between PtCl62− and metallic Ag and surfactant micelles (Brij58) as the soft template to generate porous dendrites. The formation of a Ag/Pt alloy phase was confirmed by XRD and HRTEM. Elemental mapping and line scanning revealed the formation of the hollow architecture. We studied the effects of the Ag/Pt ratio, surfactant and reaction temperature on the morphology. In addition, we explored the formation process of hollow dendritic Ag/Pt nanoparticles by tracking the morphologies of the nanostructures formed at different stages. In order to improve the electrocatalytic property, we controlled the size of the nanoparticles and the thickness of the shell by adjusting the amount of the precursor. We found that these Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles exhibited high activity (440 mA mg−1) and stability as an electrocatalyst for catalyzing methanol oxidation.

Doping Ag in ZnO Nanorods to Improve the Performance of Related Enzymatic Glucose Sensors

Fan Zhou,Weixuan Jing,Pengcheng Liu,Dejun Han,Zhuangde Jiang,Zhengying Wei

In this paper, the performance of a zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod-based enzymatic glucose sensor was enhanced with silver (Ag)-doped ZnO (ZnO-Ag) nanorods. The effect of the doped Ag on the surface morphologies, wettability, and electron transfer capability of the ZnO-Ag nanorods, as well as the catalytic character of glucose oxidase (GOx) and the performance of the glucose sensor was investigated. The results indicate that the doped Ag slightly weakens the surface roughness and hydrophilicity of the ZnO-Ag nanorods, but remarkably increases their electron transfer ability and enhances the catalytic character of GOx. Consequently, the combined effects of the above influencing factors lead to a notable improvement of the performance of the glucose sensor, that is, the sensitivity increases and the detection limit decreases. The optimal amount of the doped Ag is determined to be 2 mM, and the corresponding glucose sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 3.85 μA/(mM·cm2), detection limit of 1.5 μM, linear range of 1.5 × 10−3–6.5 mM, and Michaelis-Menten constant of 3.87 mM. Moreover, the glucose sensor shows excellent selectivity to urea, ascorbic acid, and uric acid, in addition to displaying good storage stability. These results demonstrate that ZnO-Ag nanorods are promising matrix materials for the construction of other enzymatic biosensors. Keywords:ZnO nanorod;doping;surface morphology;wettability;glucose sensor
