Reversible aggregation-redispersion of Cu sites in Cu/CeO2 catalysts with unlocked hydrogenation activity

Yu Zhang,Ningqiang Zhang,Yiwei Liu,Haofan Lei,Tao Zhou,Wenlong Wu,Wei-Wei Wang,Han Yan,Chao Ma,Ken-ichi Shimizu,Chun-Jiang Jia,Jie Zeng

For oxide-supported metal catalysts, metal-support interaction (MSI) facilitates metal dispersion at the expense of the metallic character, resulting in a trade-off between active site utilization and intrinsic activity. Here, we used a thermal aging strategy to modulate the MSI in Cu/CeO 2 catalysts, facilitating the formation of metallic Cu sites upon H 2 reduction while maintaining metal dispersion. Systematic experiments confirmed that thermal aging at 800°C lowered the reduction temperature and increased the reduction degree of Cu sites. Microscopy evidenced few-atom-layered Cu nanoclusters before and after H 2 reduction, whereas in situ spectroscopy revealed metallic Cu nanoparticles under H 2 atmosphere. This discrepancy indicated a reversible structural evolution from aggregation to redispersion in thermally aged Cu/CeO 2 . The catalytic activity for acetylene semihydrogenation was unlocked on metallic Cu sites, compared to nearly inactive Cu sites in conventional Cu/CeO 2 counterparts. Our work developed an effective strategy for rational modulation of MSI, offering the feasibility to tailor-make active sites for specific reactions.

Atmosphere treatment modulates metal-support interaction in Pt/CeO2 catalysts for efficient CO oxidation

Wenli Wu,Min Chen,Bolang Li,WenQiang Ye,Fei Wang,Kai Li,Ping Ning,Changbin Zhang

Oxygen-enriched CO oxidation is a pivotal reaction in automotive exhaust and indoor air purification. Fine-tuning the active sites represents a significant challenge in this catalytic field. In this work, we modulated the chemical state of Pt on Pt/CeO 2 catalysts by varying pretreatment atmospheres (direct H 2 reduction and sequential O 2 calcination-H 2 reduction), then applied these catalysts to the CO oxidation reaction. It was found that the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst via direct H 2 reduction showed a much higher activity than the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst via sequential O 2 calcination-H 2 reduction. It was revealed that under O 2 -H 2 conditions, a strong metal-support interaction (MSI) introduced the highly dispersed small Pt clusters. Conversely, under H 2 reduction conditions, a moderate MSI causes the formation of larger Pt nanoparticles, exhibiting a significantly increased proportion of metallic states and promoting the activity of CO oxidation. This study provides an effective strategy for designing highly efficient catalysts.

Synthesis of high-performance Y3+ doped CeO2 nanoabrasives through regulating crystallization of cerium carbonate☆

Jing Li,Xiaojie Jin,Lijuan Wang,Xiaoqing Zhou,Long Qiu,Xiaowei Huang,Yongxiu Li

Nano ceria abrasive is a key material for ultra-precision chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of advanced integrated circuits and optical components. Ion doping is an effective method to improve the surface Ce 3+ content and chemical polishing effect. In this study, Y 3+ doped CeO 2 nanoabrasives were prepared by regulating the crystallization process of rare earth (RE) carbonate precursor based on the morphology inheritance between the precursors and the calcined products. In order to reduce the crystallization rate of cerium carbonate, the crystallization inert region with NH 4 HCO 3 to Ce 3+ molar ratio of 6 and reaction temperature of 60 °C was selected for precipitation reaction, and Y 3+ , a heavy RE with a large ion radius difference from Ce 3+ , was introduced into the precipitation system. The crystallization rate of cerium carbonate decreases obviously when Y 3+ doping content reaches 8 mol%, and amorphous nanoscale cerium carbonates begin to form. Using them as precursors, Y 3+ doped CeO 2 nanoabrasives with doping content of 8 mol%–20 mol% were prepared by calcination, and their physicochemical properties and polishing performance on K9 glass were studied. The prepared Y 3+ doped CeO 2 nanoabrasives have quasi-spherical morphology and the size is (50±15) nm. With Y 3+ doping amount increasing from 8 mol% to 20 mol%, the surface Ce 3+ concentration of the abrasive particles slightly increases from 20.0% to 21.7%, while the Young’s modulus decreases from 9.44 to 5.85 GPa. The sample with Y 3+ doping content of 10 mol% has the best performance in K9 polishing, with material removal rate of (234.0±4.0) nm/min and surface arithmetic mean height ( S a roughness) of (0.304±0.018) nm.

V-doped CeO2-loaded biopolymer scaffold for reactive oxygen species scavenging and osteogenic enhancement

Linfeng Fan,Feng Yang,Mengling Jiang,Qiuhui Li,Xinna Bai,Pei Feng,Hao Pan

Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during bone scaffold implantation disrupt cellular redox homeostasis and adversely affect stem cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, thereby impeding bone regeneration. In this study, vanadium (V) was doped into the cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) lattice via a wet chemical synthesis, and the resulting V-doped CeO 2 (V-CeO 2 ) nanoparticles were incorporated into a poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) matrix to fabricate composite scaffolds using selective laser sintering. The incorporation of V induced lattice distortion and increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies, which enhanced ROS adsorption and catalytic conversion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that V doping increased the Ce(Ⅲ) content from 31.2% to 39.9%, thereby facilitating the Ce(Ⅲ)/Ce(IV) redox cycle. Specifically, Ce(Ⅲ)exhibited superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity to eliminate O 2 •- , while Ce(IV) showed catalase (CAT)-mimetic activity for H 2 O 2 decomposition. In vitro evaluations demonstrated that the PLLA/V-CeO 2 scaffold significantly reduced intracellular ROS levels and upregulated osteogenic gene expression, including BMP-2 and RUNX2. Moreover, the scaffolds exhibited favorable biocompatibility, supporting osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. These results suggest that V-CeO 2 -integrated scaffolds hold promise for ROS-regulated bone tissue repair.

In Situ Construction of Cu+-Ov-Ce3+ Sites on CeO2 for Efficient NH3 Oxidation

Chaomin Duan,Meng Wang,Yan Zhang,Zhihua Lian,Wenpo Shan

Ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions adversely affect both the environment and human health. The selective catalytic oxidation of NH 3 (NH 3 -SCO) holds great promise for NH 3 abatement; however, there remains a lack of cost-effective NH 3 -SCO catalysts with high activity and N 2 selectivity for practical applications. This study reports on a strategy for constructing an outstanding NH 3 oxidation catalyst via the in situ doping of Cu into CeO 2 nanorods. The designed CeCuO x nanorod catalyst shows remarkable activity, N 2 selectivity, and stability for NH 3 oxidation, achieving complete conversion below 250 °C, with ≈80% N 2 selectivity. The results of various characterization tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the addition of Cu induces the formation of abundant Cu + -O v -Ce 3+ active sites on the CeO 2 , which are beneficial for the adsorption and activation of reactants. Additionally, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) confirms that the addition of Cu switches the primary intermediate species of NH 3 oxidation from bidentate nitrate species to monodentate nitrate species, which accelerates the rate-determining step of NH 3 -to-N 2 oxidation. Therefore, doping Cu into CeO 2 greatly improves its NH 3 oxidation activity and N 2 selectivity. This study provides valuable insights into the construction of highly active sites for NH 3 oxidation.

Constructing MgAlOx–CuRu–CeO2 Heterostructures for Enhanced Low-temperature Photothermal Dry Reforming of Methane

Kun Gong,Ruitao Li,Yuxin Wang,Yihan Zheng,Haoran Yang,Yuanyuan Dai,Qiang Niu,Tiejun Lin,Liangshu Zhong

Light-driven photothermal methane dry reforming offers a promising strategy to produce syngas efficiently with decreased greenhouse gas emissions. However, current photothermal catalysts still face limitations in light-to-fuel efficiencies, typically below 30%. Herein, a MgAlOx–CuRu–CeO2 heterostructure was successfully constructed to boost the light-driven methane dry reforming reaction, which integrated plasmonic resonance, electronic structure modulation, and hierarchical architectures. A remarkable CO production rate of 215.4 mol gRu–1 min–1 was achieved, approximately 18 times higher than that of current advanced catalysts. Moreover, a record-high light-to-fuel efficiency of 42.5% was obtained at a relatively low temperature of 502 °C, along with an exceptionally stable photothermal performance over 60 h of operation. Structural evolution studies revealed that CuRu bimetallic nanoparticles were thermally stabilized via spatial confinement mediated by MgAlOx, which established balanced metal–support interactions and generated abundant oxygen vacancies. Additionally, the multifunctional architecture enhanced electron transfer and created electron-enriched Ru sites. The surface plasmon resonance effect of Cu and oxygen defects within the MgAlOx–CuRu–CeO2 heterostructure enabled wide-bandwidth light harvesting and promoted the formation and segregation of charge carriers. Hot carriers and thermal energy synergistically refined the reaction pathway through HCOO* and CH3O* intermediates, leading to a decrease in the apparent activation energy and enabling the surpassing of thermodynamic equilibrium limitations. This work highlights a promising strategy for boosting solar energy utilization and driving the efficient synthesis of solar fuels through the strategic engineering of multifunctional photothermal catalysts.

Unraveling the Mechanism of Cu/CeO2 Interface Modulation for CO2 Electroreduction Into C2+/CH4

Lei Xiong,Xianbiao Fu,Jun Zhang,Shuang Liu,Shanshan Li,Shaojie Lu,Dong Wang,Qin Yue

Cu shows unique characteristics for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to hydrocarbons and oxygenates due to the moderate adsorption energy of the key intermediate *CO. However, it remains a challenge to selectively control CO 2 RR towards C 1 (e.g., CH 4 ) or C 2+ (e.g., C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 5 OH) through simple interface engineering. Herein, a series of inverse catalysts, composed of CeO 2 nanoparticles over Cu substrate (Cu-CeO 2 -x), are subtly designed to tackle the issues. It is verified CeO 2 decoration induces highly active Cu/CeO 2 interfacial sites that enhance the adsorption and conversion of CO 2 and *CO intermediates into C 2+ or CH 4 , while the Cu sites are conducive to *CO generation. With the increase of CeO 2 deposition, the C 2+ and CH 4 selectivity present a volcano-type and increasing tendency with maximum faradic efficiency of 62.6% and 51.3%, respectively. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that moderate CeO 2 loading allows the Cu/CeO 2 interfacial sites to cooperate efficiently with the Cu sites to promote the coupling of *CO/*CHO intermediates, thus enhancing the C 2+ selectivity. In contrast, excessive CeO 2 loading suppresses the C─C coupling but boosts unilaterally the hydrogenation, thus promoting the CH 4 production. This work provides effective strategies to regulate the CO 2 RR selectivity by modulating metal/oxide interfaces.

Efficient electrosynthesis of CO-rich syngas over CeO2-armored Ag nanowires towards sustainable steelmaking

Yi-Hong Yu,Xin Cui,Yi-Meng Hong,Gao-Wu Qin,Song Li

Incorporating electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) that produces CO-rich syngas into the workflow of steelmaking presents a promising strategy to neutralize the steelmaking industry. Herein, we develop a highly efficient and stable Ag nanowires with surface CeO 2 armors (CeO 2 /AgNWs) as ECR electrocatalyst for syngas production. The engineered CeO 2 -Ag interface facilitates CO 2 -to-CO conversion by lowering the energy barrier for *COOH intermediate formation through synergistic electronic effects. At an industrially relevant current density of −251.3 mA cm −2 , the CeO 2 /AgNWs generate CO-rich syngas by co-electrolysis of CO 2 and H 2 O, with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.1 % for CO. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) reveals that integrating the CeO 2 /AgNWs-driven ECR into existing steelmaking workflows can potentially reduce CO 2 emissions by 83 % and elevate the renewable energy utilization to ∼91.4 %, unlocking new possibilities for achieving carbon neutrality in the steel industry.

Enhanced low-temperature CO oxidation activity through crystal facet engineering of Pd/CeO2 catalysts

Jing He,Xiao Yang,Zehui Zhu,Xue Luo,Cai-e Wu,Yan Cui,Qingzhi Ge,Jian Qiu,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen

Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) supported palladium (Pd) catalysts have found widespread application in CO oxidation reaction owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. The morphology of the CeO 2 support dictates the exposed crystal plane, exerting a profound influence on surface structure and redox properties. This is crucial as the atomic arrangement at the surface directly impacts catalytic activity. In this study, a range of CeO 2 supports with diverse morphologies ( e.g. nano-octahedra, nano-cubes, nano-particles, nano-spheres, and nano-rods) were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal methods and subsequently supported with Pd for CO oxidation. The spherical 1Pd/CeO 2 –S catalyst, revealing exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes, exhibited significantly higher CO catalytic oxidation activity compared to the catalysts with other morphological CeO 2 supports. The results indicated a positive correlation between the content of Pd x Ce 1-x O 2-y species and catalytic activity. Notably, this species was most abundantly formed in the spherical 1Pd/CeO 2 –S catalyst with exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes. The presence of this active species facilitated the formation of surface defects , increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and enhanced metal-support interaction, consequently greatly improving the CO low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity. Consequently, the oxidation state of Pd in the Pd/CeO 2 catalyst could be effectively regulated by controlling the exposure of (111) + (100) crystalline surfaces of the CeO 2 support, further optimizing the catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO 2 catalytic system.

Preparation and freshness detection of tofu based on In-doped CeO2 ammonia gas sensor

Xiujuan Ma,Hongyan Zhang,Chu Chen

An ammonia (NH 3 ) sensor with high sensitivity based on indium-doped cerium oxide (In/CeO 2 ) was prepared by hydrothermal method , and its sensing mechanism was revealed by first-principles. Experimental results show that indium ion (In 3+ ) doping can effectually increase the sensitivity of NH 3 sensor based on CeO 2 , which is mainly attributed to the enhancement in the number of oxygen vacancies and oxygen free radicals on the surface of In/CeO 2 . In/CeO 2 sensor for NH 3 with a response value of 5412.93 at a concentration of 1000 ppm, which is 65 times that of CeO 2 sensor. Moreover, the low detection limit (LOD) of In/CeO 2 is 0.433 ppm and its response/recovery time to 5 ppm NH 3 is 1.1 s/1.4 s. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirmed that NH 3 has higher adsorption-induced charge transfer and adsorption energy on the surface of In/CeO 2 than other gases. This makes it easier for In/CeO 2 to adsorb NH 3 molecules and release more conduction electrons, thus improving the performance of In/CeO 2 . In addition, In/CeO 2 sensor can be effectively used to detect the freshness of tofu through the concentration of NH 3 released by the tofu in different storage environments. This work is beneficial to the safety monitoring of high protein food.

The Influence of Grain Size on Microstructure Evolution in CeO2 under Xenon Ion Irradiation

Penghui Lei,Xiaoyu Ji,Jie Qiu,Jiaxuan Si,Tao Peng,Changqing Teng,Lu Wu

Large-grained UO2is considered a potential accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) due to its superior fission gas retention capabilities. Irradiation experiments for cerium dioxide (CeO2), used as a surrogate fuel, is a common approach for evaluating the performance of UO2. In this work, spark plasma sintered CeO2pellets with varying grain sizes (145 nm, 353 nm, and 101 μm) and a relative density greater than 93.83% were irradiated with 4 MeV Xe ions at a fluence of 2 × 1015ions/cm2at room temperature, followed by annealing at 600 °C for 3 h. Microstructure, including dislocation loops and bubble morphology of the irradiated samples, has been characterized. The average size of dislocation loops increases with increasing grain size. Large-sized dislocation loops are absent near the grain boundary because the boundary absorbs surrounding defects and prevents the dislocation loops from coalescing and expanding. The distribution of bubbles within the grain is uniform, whereas the large-sized and irregularly shaped xenon bubbles observed in the small grain exhibit pipe diffusion along the grain boundaries. The bubble diameter in the large-grained pellet is the smallest. As the grain size increases, the volumetric swelling of the irradiated pellets decreases while the areal density of Xe bubbles increases. Elemental segregation, which tends to occur at dislocation loops and grain boundaries, has been analyzed. Large-grained CeO2pellet with lower-density grain boundaries exhibits better resistance to volumetric swelling and elemental segregation, suggesting that large-grained UO2pellets could serve as a potential ATF.

Promoting effect of alkaline earth metals on Ni/CeO2 catalysts for ammonia decomposition reaction

Zhen Zhang,Minghui Yu,Meiqing Shen,Wei Li,Gurong Shen

Ni-based catalysts, as non-noble metal alternatives, are widely regarded for their potential in ammonia decomposition for hydrogen production. However, their performance at low temperatures is suboptimal, necessitating the addition of promoters and a clear understanding of their mechanisms to enhance catalytic activity. In this study, we have successfully improved the low-temperature ammonia decomposition performance of Ni/CeO 2 by incorporating alkaline earth metals and conducted a comprehensive analysis of the underlying structural and electronic effects. The findings reveal that alkaline earth metals can enhance the basicity of the catalyst and increase electron density around the active metal sites, thereby facilitating the rate-determining step of recombination and desorption of N atom. Moreover, the presence of alkaline earth metals disrupts hydrogen adsorption stability on the catalysts, effectively mitigating the impact of hydrogen inhibition. Based on systematic kinetic experiments, a kinetic model was developed that accurately captures the hydrogen inhibition effect for Ni/CeO 2 catalysts. The insights into the promotional mechanisms of alkaline earth metals offer theoretical guidance for the development of highly active and cost-effective catalysts for ammonia decomposition.
