Nitroaromatic compounds are common toxic matters discharged as wastewater in varied industries. Reducing them into corresponding aromatic amines can not only decrease their contamination but also obtain value-added products, in which the preparation of catalysts with superior properties is the key. Herein, the spherical Cu-Ag architectures (ATs) are constructed via a two-step wet chemical method. First, the Cu microspheres are fabricated with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the mixed solution of ethylene glycol (EG) and water. Then, using them as templates, the spherical Cu-Ag ATs can be grown and constructed. The as-obtained Cu-Ag ATs have the spherical outlines assembled by many nanoparticles. The sliced Cu-Ag ATs show hollow structures and many nanothorns grow from the center to the around, combining the roughly spherical shell to build up the Cu-Ag ATs. In the reduction reaction of p -nitrophenol and p -nitroaniline, the spherical Cu-Ag ATs all exhibit excellent catalytic activities. Within 85 s and 80 s, the p -nitrophenol and p -nitroaniline can be converted completely. The prepared Cu-Ag ATs are expected to have potentials in other fields, such as electronics, sensors and so on. Graphical abstract The hierarchical Cu-Ag architectures are constructed successfully through a two-step wet chemical method, in which the rough Cu microspheres are first fabricated in aqueous EG solution, and are used as templates to direct the growth of Cu-Ag architectures. In both reduction of p -nitrophenol and p -nitroaniline, the Cu-Ag architectures exhibit high catalytic activities.

Bacterial keratitis is a major cause of blindness, hindered by the rising threat of antibiotic resistance. Although corneal bandage lenses (CBLs) are widely utilized in ophthalmic treatment, their effectiveness in treating bacterial keratitis remains limited due to risks of secondary infections, patient discomfort, and complications. In this study, we developed a novel biomimetic coating on CBLs by grafting Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag/Cu-NPs) and thiol-functionalized heparin (Hep-SH) using a rapid polydopamine (PDA) deposition technique, effectively mimicking the ocular surface glycocalyx structure. The resulting Ag/Cu-NPs/Hep-SH coated CBLs (PNH-CBLs) exhibited significant antibacterial activity, with over 80 % reduction in Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and 70 % in Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) due to the sustained release of Ag + and Cu 2+ , along with displaying favorable in vitro biocompatibility. Animal experiments conducted on New Zealand white rabbits with bacterial keratitis demonstrated successful treatment therapeutic outcomes, with PNH-CBLs leading to a significant decrease in clinical score. These biomimetic lenses also exhibited selective anti-protein adsorption properties, minimizing inflammation and promoting surface lubrication. Overall, this innovative approach addresses critical challenges in antibiotic resistance and offers a promising therapeutic strategy for managing ophthalmic infectious diseases.

Ag and Cu based nanostructures serve as advanced functional materials for biomedical applications , due to their unique properties. Here, we proposed a novel neurotransmitter biosensing method based on Ag–Cu composite nanozyme , synthesized through the soft film plate method. Supported by the soft film template , the Ag–Cu nanozymes were stably kept to an ultrafine 2D structure with high monodispersity, which provided a large specific surface area and sufficient binding sites , leading to controllable and improved dual-nanozyme activities over similar-sized mono-Ag and mono-Cu, and up to 4.95 times of natural enzyme-level. The multi-path enzymatic reaction processes catalyzed by Ag–Cu composite nanozymes were firstly theoretically discussed in detail, according to the theoretical redox potential of redox couples in the reaction systems. On this basis, the Ag–Cu filled nanonets based neurotransmitter biosensing is successfully applied in rapid detection for glutathione and dopamine, possessing a linear range of 10∼100 μM and 1–10 μM, and a detection limit of 3.01 μM and 0.29 μM, respectively, which exhibited superior performance for biomedical purposes over most commercially available products in speed and precision.

Renewable energy-driven electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction presents a low-carbon and sustainable route for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. Yet, the practical application of this process is currently hindered by unsatisfactory electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability. Herein we achieve high-rate ammonia electrosynthesis using a stable amorphous/crystalline dual-phase Cu catalyst. The ammonia partial current density and formation rate reach 3.33 ± 0.005 A cm −2 and 15.5 ± 0.02 mmol h −1 cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 2.6 ± 0.01 V, respectively. Remarkably, the dual-phase Cu catalyst can maintain stable ammonia production with a Faradaic efficiency of around 90% at a high current density of 1.5 A cm −2 for up to 300 h. A scale-up demonstration with an electrode size of 100 cm 2 achieves an ammonia formation rate as high as 11.9 ± 0.5 g h −1 at a total current of 160 A. The impressive electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to the presence of stable amorphous Cu domains which promote the adsorption and hydrogenation of nitrogen-containing intermediates, thus improving reaction kinetics for ammonia formation. This work underscores the importance of stabilizing metastable amorphous structures for improving electrocatalytic reactivity and long-term stability.

A novel all-in-one electrochromic device from viologen-based Cu-MOF was demonstrated successfully for the first time. The viologen-based Cu-MOF was dispersed in a photochemical eutectic solvent and directly used as an electrochromic material with the outstanding advantage of good modulation ability in a wide range of visible light. The electrochromic device's (ECD) color changed from transparent and light lime green to blue during the change of potential from 0 V to −3.5 V. The bistability of the ECD was demonstrated by the transmittance degradation of less than 10 % over 1.79 h when the power was turned off. This showed that the ECD could maintain its optical state long without a continuous power supply.

The occurrence of "dark holes" is a common phenomenon in TiO 2 -based ceramics, resulting from the reduction of Ti 4+ under high-temperature and low-oxygen partial pressure sintering conditions. To achieve low dielectric loss, Ca 0.61 Nd 0.26 Ti 1- x Cu x O 3 ceramics were designed and prepared in this work. The results indicate that moderate doping of CuO not only enhances insulation resistivity and Q × f value but also reduces the positive τ f value. The Ca 0.61 Nd 0.26 Ti 0.98 Cu 0.02 O 3 sample exhibited the highest Q × f value of 16,895 GHz, contributing to the miniaturization and insertion loss of microwave devices.

We report a facile synthesis of copper/nickel (Cu/Ni) alloy nanospheres in high purity and with tunable, well-controlled sizes and elemental ratios. The success of this synthesis relies on the use of one-pot, direct thermal reduction of a Cu and Ni precursor mixture in the presence of trioctylphosphine (TOP) and oleylamine (OAm) at an elevated temperature to form Cu/Ni alloy nanoparticles with a spherical shape and uniform size. Their sizes could be readily tuned in the range of 6.9–27.3 nm by simply varying the volume of TOP added to the reaction solution. The elemental ratio of Cu to Ni in resultant products was found to remain the same as that in the precursor, which offers a simple way to manipulate the composition of Cu/Ni alloy nanospheres. We also tested the catalytic performance of as-prepared Cu/Ni alloy nanospheres and evaluate the effect of size and elemental ratio using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as the model reaction. The current strategy enables the size and composition controlled synthesis of Cu/Ni alloy nanomaterials and could find important use in the fabrication of other types of bimetallic alloy nanomaterials with desired sizes and compositions for catalytic purposes.

Contamination of heavy metals has always been a pressing concern. The dry-wet alternately treated carboxymethylcellulose bentonite (DW-CB) was successfully prepared by intercalating bentonite (BT) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) obtained by solvent processes using enzymatically digested wastepaper as cellulosic raw material, and the adsorption capacity of Cu 2+ on DW-CB in aqueous solution was investigated. A 98.18 ± 2.31 % removal efficiency was achieved by 4 g/L of DW-CB after 8 h in a solution containing 100 mg/L of Cu 2+ , which were 4.1 times and 1.5 times of that of BT and adsorbent prepared without alternating dry-wet process, respectively. The introduction of –COOH groups during the preparation of DW-CB enhanced the electrostatic interaction between DW-CB and Cu 2+ , which was the main driving force for Cu 2+ removal. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model better described the adsorption process and adsorption capacity of Cu 2+ on DW-CB. DW-CB still showed high removal of Cu 2+ (19.61 ± 0.99 mg/g) in the presence of multiple metal ions , while exhibiting the potential for removal of Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ and K + , especially Mg 2+ (22.69 ± 1.48 mg/g). However, the interactions of organics with Cu 2+ severely affected the removal of Cu 2+ by DW-CB (removal efficiency: 17.90 ± 4.17 % - 95.33 ± 0.27 %). In this study, an adsorbent with high targeted adsorption of Cu 2+ was prepared by utilizing wastepaper and BT, which broadened the way of wastepaper resource utilization and had good economic and social benefits .

In CO 2 electroreduction, mutative intermediates and the challenging C C coupling necessitate the spatial interplay between active sites and through dynamically optimizing configurations. Herein, we anchor ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-bonded Cu x+ /Bi 3+ pair within UiO-66 for a spontaneous spatial-optimizing CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 electroreduction. Ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulation visualizes that such metal pair adaptively interacts with intermediates. Density functional theory (DFT) elicits the componential synergy, in which an upshift d-band of Cu activates CO 2 being protonated into *COOH while Bi site stabilizes oxygenated dimers for deep hydrogenation. The dynamic feature of such pair affords large freedom for sorption and migration of various intermediates, which consequently bestows UiO-66-EDTA/CuBi a maximal FE C 2 H 4 of 47 % and a total current density over 100 mA cm −2 in the flow cell.

The persistent challenge of nitrate (NO 3 – ) pollution in water systems, profoundly impacting ecosystems and human health, demands effective remediation strategies. Here, we present an innovative S-scheme Cu@CN/TiO x heterojunction for high-efficiency photocatalytic denitrification (PCDN). Evaluation of its performance demonstrates exceptional NO 3 – removal efficiency (99.5%) and remarkable N 2 selectivity (95.5%), with 13.7 and 4.1 times higher rate constants of NO 3 – removal than the individual Cu@CN and TiO x components. Notably, this catalyst exhibits impressive stability across multiple cycles, maintaining consistent high conversion rates and selectivity. Mechanistic insights unveiled a tandem reaction pathway where Cu@CN selectively reduced NO 3 – to NO 2 – , followed by the TiO x -mediated CO 2 • – generation, enabling highly selective NO 2 – to N 2 conversion. This unique catalytic system, featuring spatially separated redox-active sites, presents a promising avenue for efficient, selective, and stable denitrification processes, offering significant potential in addressing water pollution challenges and advancing tandem catalytic systems.

Accurately detecting hydrogen sulfide in the environment and monitoring its pollution sources are crucial for pollution assessment and personal safety. However, rapid detection is a challenge due to the influence of carrier behavior and surface adsorption states. In this paper, Cu-doped W18O49 nanowires were synthesized by the solvothermal method. The surface field effect phenomenon resulting from doping and H2S adsorption enables a rapid response to H2S with significantly improved responsivity. We characterized the material’s structure and properties by SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques, verified the surface microelectric field effect by combining XPS and field effect device in situ gas sensing characterization, and discussed the sensitive mechanism of hydrogen sulfide.

SnTe is an environmentally friendly and promising alternative thermoelectric material in contrast to harmful PbTe. However, the long-lasting high lattice thermal conductivity significantly inhibits the further enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. Herein, this study proposed a strategy of solvothermal copper doping to considerably reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by introducing multiscale hierarchical structures. The structural and morphological characterizations indicate that Cu was doped as interstitial atoms and secondary-phase Cu1.80Te. Simultaneously, this study reveals that Cu1.80Te and the SnTe matrix stem from nanoparticles and octahedral structures, respectively. In the sintered bulks, phonon scattering was significantly increased owing to the abundant micro/nanopores, Cu1.80Te nanoprecipitates, grain boundaries of SnTe, and phase boundaries between Cu1.80Te and SnTe. The increased phonon scattering leads to a lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.36 W m–1 K–1 at 773 K, which is lower than that of pristine SnTe. Benefiting from this substantially decreased thermal conductivity, a ZT value of ∼0.91 was achieved in Sn0.98Cu0.02Te. The enhancement is ∼300% over pristine SnTe. This work provides an effective method to fabricate high-performance energy-effective SnTe-based thermoelectric materials.
