Recently, we've reported the anti-hyperuricemic effects of Cordyceps militaris. As a characteristic compound of C. militaris, we hypothesized that cordycepin may play a role in preventing hyperurecimia. Remarkably, cordycepin produced important anti-hyperuricemic actions, decreasing SUA (serum uric acid) to 216, 210, and 203 μmol/L (P < 0.01) at 15, 30, and 60 mg/kg in comparison of hyperuricemic control (337 μmol/L), closing to normal control (202 μmol/L). Elisa, RT-PCR and western blot analysis demonstrated that the actions may be attributed to its downregulation of uric acid transporter 1 (URAT1) in kidney. Serum creatinine levels and blood urine nitrogen and liver, kidney, and spleen coefficients demonstrated that cordycepin may not impact liver, renal, and spleen functions. In addition, we used computational molecular simulation to investigate the binding mechanism of cordycepin. Of which, van der Waals interaction dominated the binding. Residues TRP290, ARG17, ALA408, GLY411, and MET147 contributed mainly on nonpolar energy. This provided the theoretical guidance to rationally design and synthesis novel URAT1 inhibitors.

Because of the complexity of contaminants infiltrating groundwater, it is necessary to study the co-transport of contaminants in the vadose and saturated zones . To investigate the role of inorganic colloids in the transport of biocolloids through porous media, a series of experiments were performed using columns packed with sand. The Escherichia coli phage ( E. coli phage) was used as the model virus and silica as the model colloid in this study. The model virus exhibited a higher degree of attachment when compared with silica under similar experimental conditions. Under unsaturated flow conditions, the degree of virus retention was higher than in the corresponding saturated flow case, regardless of the presence of silica. Mass recovery and breakthrough curve data showed that silica hindered virus transport in saturated porous media. The model virus exhibited a higher degree of retention in the presence of silica. This could be related to pore structure changes caused by aggregated virus-silica particles located within the pores of the sand. Conversely, the suspended virus retained at the air-water interface provided new retention sites for other colloids; the retention was observed to be higher in the presence of colloidal silica in the saturated columns. In the corresponding unsaturated experiments, silica was observed to play the opposite function with respect to virus transport, which demonstrated that silica facilitated virus transport in the presence of unsaturated porous media. Capillary forces were stronger than the virus-silica interactions, and inhibited the aggregation of particles . Suspended silica competes with the virus for sorption sites because of a high affinity for the air-water interface. This competition inhibits virus retention by electrostatic repulsion of like-charged particles, and concomitantly facilitates virus transport under unsaturated conditions .

Selectively converting carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to ethanol via photocatalysis offers a sustainable means of storing solar energy in chemical bonds. However, its efficiency is limited by an inadequate proton supply from water oxidation to drive the carbon‑carbon (C C) coupling step. This inefficiency leads to poor ethanol selectivity and promotes a competing hydrogen evolution side reaction, ultimately restricting overall system performance. Here, we designed a ternary In(OH) 3 -Cu 2 O/PCN heterojunction as a functionally partitioned catalyst: Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) acts as the photoelectron donor, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) acts as the CO 2 reduction center, and trace indium hydroxide (In(OH) 3 ) is dedicated to water oxidation. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that water dissociation on In(OH) 3 generates active hydrogen species (*H), which are subsequently transferred to adjacent Cu sites with a low migration barrier. This interfacial proton relay mechanism avoids the accumulation of high-energy *H intermediates on the active sites, which suppresses the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Correspondingly, the energy barrier for the crucial adsorbed carbon monoxide (*CO) dimerization step is lowered from 0.93 eV to 0.78 eV. The catalyst demonstrates superior activity to most documented photocatalysts for CO 2 -to-ethanol conversion, operating under sacrificial agent-free conditions, achieving an ethanol production rate of 125.4 ± 5.1 μmol g −1 h −1 and a selectivity of 90.4% ± 2.8%. These findings highlight the promise of functionally partitioned architectures in steering complex multi-step photocatalytic transformations toward valuable multi‑carbon products.

Understanding of the reaction kinetics of active redox couples on porous electrodes is essential for enhancing flow battery performance. However, most previous kinetics studies were conducted under ex-situ conditions using planar electrodes. As a result, the derived parameters do not accurately represent the kinetics on practical porous electrodes. Furthermore, research on iron‑chromium flow batteries (ICFBs) in the literature has been primarily experimental, with limited emphasis on cost-effective, practical modeling. This study proposes a novel in-situ method that uses a symmetric cell to evaluate the electrode kinetics of the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Cr 2+ /Cr 3+ couples on porous electrodes. By first determining the ohmic polarization through high-frequency resistance measurements and subtracting it from the total polarization, we obtain the activation polarization curves for both couples under conditions of negligible concentration polarization. Subsequent Butler-Volmer fitting yields the reaction rate constants and charge transfer coefficients. Finally, the model constructed with these in-situ kinetic parameters is validated against full-cell experimental data, confirming their reliability and establishing a comprehensive modeling framework for ICFBs.

Solid-state biomimetic channels are attractive for label-free ion analysis, but their performance is often undermined by fragile functional layers confined within narrow nanopores. Here we report a pore-in self-assembly strategy that integrates silica nanotubes (SiO 2 NTs) into a glass microtube (GMT) to construct a robust, label-free potassium ion (K + ) sensor. Thiol-functionalized SiO 2 NTs, possessing hollow tubular morphology and abundant surface anchoring groups, are capillary-wicked into the GMT lumen where they spontaneously assemble into a continuous three-dimensional porous scaffold. This hierarchical architecture effectively stabilizes the ion transport pathway and recognition sites, preventing functional disintegration under electric field-induced translocation. This platform enables detection of target potassium ion down to 0.597 μM, even at concentrations of other metal ions up to five times higher. Furthermore, by leveraging the reversible folding behavior of G4 DNA in response to potassium ion and 18-crown-6 ether, an INHIBIT logic gate was constructed that translates dual chemical inputs into discrete electrical output. This pore-in architecture combines simplicity, label-free operation, and robustness, demonstrating broad potential for intelligent ion sensing and molecular logic operations in complex environments.

Liver fibrosis shows limited treatment efficacy, driven by metabolic reprogramming and epigenetics, while the role of lactate-mediated lactylation in hepatic microenvironment remains unclear. Here, through integrative analysis of public databases and human cirrhotic liver tissues, we identified a pathogenic FSP1 + (fibroblast specific protein 1) macrophage subset as a key therapeutic target. We uncovered a novel FSP1–glycolysis–lactylation axis that drives fibrotic progression through metabolic–immune crosstalk. Expanded FSP1 + macrophage infiltration was observed in human cirrhotic liver tissues and myeloid-specific Fsp1 knockout markedly attenuates inflammation and fibrosis. Mechanistic investigations reveal that FSP1 physically interacts with pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) in macrophages, inhibiting its ubiquitin–proteasome degradation to stabilize the enzyme. This FSP1–PKM2 interaction enhances glycolytic flux and lactate production, which in turn promotes KAT2B-dependent lactylation of phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1) at lysine 353 (K353). The posttranslational modification creates a positive feedback loop by concurrently activating PGK1 and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1, which blocks mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism, thereby amplifying glycolysis and PGK1 lactylation. Notably, we developed a cell-penetrating peptide targeting PGK1-K353 lactylation that effectively attenuates the progression of liver fibrosis. Our findings establish lactate-mediated lactylation of PGK1 as a critical node in fibrotic metabolism and reveal a previously unrecognized FSP1–glycolysis axis that sustains the pro-fibrotic microenvironment. Targeting PGK1-K353 lactylation represents a promising therapeutic strategy for chronic liver diseases.

The chlorine evolution reaction underpins the chlor-alkali industry, yet its harsh acidic oxidative environment severely limits the stability of non-noble catalysts. Here we show that atomically dispersed Ce in spinel Co 3 O 4 with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous nanostructure triggers active site relocation from lattice oxygen to cobalt, simultaneously enhancing activity and inhibiting lattice oxygen corrosion. Ce occupies octahedral Co sites, inducing polyhedral distortion and creating unsaturated Co Centers that directly adsorb Cl⁻. In 4 M NaCl at pH = 2, the catalyst achieves overpotentials of 44 and 218 mV at 10 and 1000 mA cm –2 , respectively, with ~99.1% chlorine selectivity and robust durability over 550 h in a chlor-alkali cell at 2.5 kA m –2 . In situ Raman, attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirm the active-site transformation, while density functional theory calculations reveal optimized Cl adsorption free energy, suppressed oxygen-mediated degradation, and preserved structural integrity. This active-site engineering strategy offers a route to designing stable, high-current-density catalysts for chlorine production beyond noble metals.

The addition of B enhances the built-in electric field in the heterojunction. • The heterojunction could effectively degrade NOR over different environmental parameters. • The possible photocatalytic degradation pathway of NOR was investigated. • S-scheme charge transfer mechanism in heterojunction was proposed Antibiotic residues in natural water have posed great risks to ecological safety and public health. There, B-doped g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 (BCN/TNS) S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed through self-deposition. The optimized 0.7BCN/TNS heterojunction exhibited superior photocatalytic activity and degraded 94.8% norfloxacin (NOR) within 90 min, the rate constant was 2.06-fold and 1.46 folds than that of TiO 2 nanosheet array (TNS) and g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 (CN/TNS). The as-prepared also displayed high stability and strong adaptability over different environmental parameters. Radical trapping experiments and ESR measurements verified that ·O 2 - was the dominant active species during NOR degradation. Photoelectrochemical measurements and theoretical calculations indicate that the introduction of B not only increases the number of active sites and broadens the spectral absorption range, but also enhances the strength of the internal electric field (IEF), promoting charge transfer at the heterointerface. This paper supports a feasible strategy for designing a superior B-doped g-C 3 N 4 -based heterojunction for antibiotic wastewater treatment. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter, is known for its physiological functions in alleviating anxiety and improving sleep. Currently, high-yielding GABA food products are mainly obtained through screening wild-type high-producing strains (e.g.,Saccharomyces cerevisiaeisolated from Sichuan pickles yielding 0.67 g/L) or employing co-culture systems (e.g.,Enterococcus faeciumandLactiplantibacillus plantarumreaching 6.35 g/L). While effective, these methods often rely on natural screening strains or multi-microbial interactions. This study employed CRISPR-Cas9 technology to knockout theUGA1gene inSaccharomyces cerevisiae, a key gene responsible for GABA degradation. Starting from the low higher alcoholSaccharomyces cerevisiaeSY-LH, we successfully constructed the recombinant strain SY-LHU. Remarkably, this study discovered a significant upregulation ofGAD1gene expression followingUGA1knockout, which further enhanced GABA synthesis capacity. Under optimal fermentation conditions (inoculum size 4 × 107cells/mL, wort concentration 10 °P, sugar addition 60 g/L, 30 °C for 10 days, and mixing the malt broth every 48 h), the validation fermentation was performed and the GABA content in the wort beverage reached 280.36 mg/L, representing a 385.4% increase compared to the pre-optimization level. Furthermore, sensory evaluation by a trained panel yielded a mean score of 88, with no significant off-flavors detected, demonstrating the product’s high consumer acceptance. This pioneering work provides a novel and feasible technical pathway for developing functional alcoholic beverages with sleep-aiding properties.

Gadolinium oxide/graphene oxide (Gd2O3/GO) nanocomposite has been prepared by a simple method in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and employed as an excellent catalyst for common organic dyes degradation under ultrasound. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) data revealed that the Gd2O3 nanoparticles were successfully attached on the surface of GO sheets. The High efficiencies of common dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange, methyl violet rhodamine B, fuchsin base, thymolphthalein, crystal violet and eosin) degradation within 15 min illustrated that the as-synthesized nanocomposite was an ultrafast, stable, recyclable, and economical material for environment related applications.

Morphologies play an important role in carbon nanomaterials. Carbon nanomaterials with different morphologies have different applications in different fields. However, carbon nano-polyhedra have been rarely reported in literatures. Nano-carbon octadecahedron were prepared by the interaction of DTAB of aggregates with a concentrated solution of calcium chloride at 600 °C and with a size of about 700 nm. A series of characterizations, such as SEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRD, Raman, etc., proved that it conforms to the basic characteristics of carbon nanomaterials and may be doped with Ca and carbon. Successful preparation of carbon octadecahedron suggests that the use of in situ carbonization in a concentrated salt system is a new and worthwhile approach to explore.

The transition from traditional to modern energy is widely accepted as a critical facilitator of improved health, social, and livelihood outcomes, but over three quarters of China’s rural population are still persisting with traditional energy practices. Using panel data on 28 provinces during 1991–2014, this paper investigates how institutional pressure, status quo inertia, and the allure of power and control affect rural residents’ direct biomass energy consumption (RRDBEC) in China. The empirical results show that: (1) the institutional pressure of the number of staff in rural energy administrative agencies facilitates the lock-in of RRDBEC, but government funding on rural energy development has an opposite impact; (2) status quo inertia, depicted by the lagged term of planting proportion of grain and the expenditure proportion of meat, is verified to lock RRDBEC; (3) the allure of power and control, depicted by the lagged term of ownership of firewood-saving stoves, strengthens the lock-in of RRDBEC; (4) income level, education level, and dependency ratio are verified as significant and negative determinants of RRDBEC, while fuel prices lock RRDBEC. Therefore, the policy implications include transforming the functions of rural energy administrative agencies, increasing government funds, carrying out public education of health and environment awareness, and providing economic incentives.
