A novel electrochemiluminescence sensor based on Ru(bpy)32+/N-doped carbon nanodots system for the detection of bisphenol A

Libo Li,Bin Yu,Xueping Zhang,Tianyan You

A novel Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + -based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform, using N-doped carbon nanodots (N–C dots) as co-reactant, was established for the sensitive and selective detection of bisphenol A (BPA). N–C dots not only could enhance the ECL signal, but also significantly improved the reproducibility and stability of Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + ECL system. The developed ECL sensing system was sensitive to detect BPA based on its efficient quenching effect on Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + / N − C dots. The N–C dots-enhanced ECL mechanism and BPA-quenched ECL mechanism were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the inhibited ECL intensity was in good linear relationship versus the concentration of BPA in the range of 0.03–1.0 μM with the detection limit of 10 nM. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for 25 successive measurements with one sensor was 1.1% and for eight different sensors was 2.5%, respectively. The fabricated sensing platform was successfully applied for the detection of BPA in baby bottle and nipple, and relatively satisfactory recoveries were obtained.

Zirconium phosphate combined with Ru/C as a highly efficient catalyst for the direct transformation of cellulose to C6 alditols

Yuhe Liao,Qiying Liu,Tiejun Wang,Jinxing Long,Longlong Ma,Qi Zhang

The selective transformation of cellulose to C6 alditols provides a feasible route towards the sustainable synthesis of chemicals and fuels. Herein, the catalytic performance of amorphous zirconium phosphate (ZPA) combined with 5 wt% Ru/C was evaluated in the direct conversion of cellulose to C6 alditols (sorbitol and mannitol) under hydrothermal conditions. The yield of C6 alditols reached 63.5% and 85.5% with microcrystalline cellulose and ball-milled cellulose as the feedstock, respectively. This hybrid catalyst was developed to convert concentrated cellulose to obtain C6 alditols with a high concentration of 68.8 mg mL−1 in the final products. The high yield of C6 alditols from cellulose was ascribed to the fact that ZPA favoured the adsorption of cellulose and promoted its depolymerization to cellobiose and glucose, which was hydrogenated immediately to C6 alditols over Ru/C. The weak adsorption of C6 alditols over ZPA inhibited the dehydration of C6 alditols to sorbitan. Furthermore, ZPA exhibited excellent hydrothermal stability and could be reused for several runs.

Preparation of cis-pinane via α-pinene hydrogenation in water by using Ru nanoparticles immobilized in functionalized amphiphilic mesoporous silica

Lihua Xie,Xiaoyan Wang,Fengli Yu,Bing Yuan,Congxia Xie,Shitao Yu

Amphiphilic mesoporous silica modified with trimethoxy (3,3,3-trifluoropropyl) silane (TFPS) and (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTS) was prepared by one-step synthesis. The structure and morphology of the mesoporous silica were characterized and confirmed by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption, Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Meanwhile, the thermostability of the amphiphilic mesoporous silica was detected by thermogravimetric (TG) technique. Highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles supported on such amphiphilic mesoporous silica (marked as Ru/MF@MN) were synthesized by wet impregnation method with the assistance of ultrasonic. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). In water medium, Ru/MF@MN was used in α-pinene hydrogenation to prepare cis-pinane. Under the optimum reaction conditions (35 °C, 2 MPa H2, 1 h, m (H2O) : m (α-pinene) : m (Ru/MF@MN) = 200 : 60 : 1), 99.9% α-pinene conversion and 98.9% cis-pinane selectivity were obtained. When Ru/MF@MN was recycled six times, the conversion slightly decreased and the selectivity was nearly unchanged.

Built-in electric field-driven electron transfer behavior at Ru-RuP2 heterointerface fosters efficient and CO-resilient alkaline hydrogen oxidation

Yi Liu,Lianrui Cheng,Shuqing Zhou,Chenggong Niu,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Exploiting a cost-effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) with high-performance and CO poisoning resistance is essential for the widespread application of alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, we craft a unique Ru-RuP 2 heterostructure within hollow mesoporous carbon sphere (Ru-RuP 2 @C) using phosphide-controlled phase-transition approach. Benefiting from the interfacial electron transfer from RuP 2 to Ru, the Ru-RuP 2 @C electrocatalyst exhibits impressive HOR performance with a mass activity of 2.87 mA μ g Ru − 1 . Notably, Ru-RuP 2 @C demonstrates strong tolerance to 1000 ppm CO, a capability lacking in PtRu/C and Pt/C. When serves as an anode catalyst for AEMFC, it achieves a peak power density of 521 mW cm −2 , comparable to Pt/C. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the built-in electric field, resulting from work function differences, creates an asymmetric charge distribution that modulates the d -band center of Ru-RuP 2 @C. This optimizes the adsorption strength of hydrogen and hydroxide intermediates, thereby accelerating HOR catalytic kinetics.

Effect of HZSM-5 Morphology on the Catalytic Properties of Ru/HZSM-5 for the Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol to Cyclohexane

Jia-yuan Tian,Jun Hu,Feng Lin,Yu-long Ma,Yong-gang Sun,Ying-bo Zhu,Jin-peng Wei,Yi-ting Lei,Jing-jing Wu

The catalytic selective hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to value-added cyclohexane is one of the sustainable biomass utilization pathways for which the Ru/HZSM-5 support catalyst has been considered as promising. However, the effect of the catalyst morphology on the catalytic properties must be further investigated. Four Ru catalysts with different support morphologies, two-dimensional nanosheets (Ru/HZSM-5-P), brick-shaped (Ru/HZSM-5-G), cross-shaped (Ru/HZSM-5-J), and irregular particles (Ru/HZSM-5-D), were prepared by the impregnation method to investigate the effects of catalyst morphology and acidity on the conversion efficiency of lignin-derived guaiacol to cyclohexane. The catalytic activity data showed that Ru/HZSM-5-P exhibited the best catalytic performance among the four catalysts with a conversion rate of 99.9% for guaiacol and a yield of 99.9% for cyclohexane. The characterization results showed significant differences among the four catalysts in terms of accessibility (thickness and pore volume), acidity, metal particle size, and reduction temperature. The Ru/HZSM-5-P catalyst with a two-dimensional nanosheet structure showed the best accessibility, smaller metal particle size, reasonable metal–support interaction, and appropriate B/L. The relatively strong acid centers facilitate the activation of C–C and C–O bonds. Besides, the reduced Ru species on the Ru/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited high H2 adsorption activity, which was beneficial for the adsorption of guaiacol. This indicates that the difference in catalyst morphology could greatly affect its catalytic activity, thereby altering the conversion rate of reactants and selectivity of the products.

Kinetically promoted hydrogen generation by Ru nanoparticles decorated CoB2O4 on mesoporous carbon spheres with rich oxygen vacancies for NaBH4 hydrolysis

Huatong Li,Xinran Hu,Lixia Wang,Luyan Shi,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Developing heterostructured catalysts with highly active and reusable is an urgent task to achieve green hydrogen production via NaBH 4 . Herein, we proposed a novel NaCl template method, which involves solid-state physical grinding of metal salts, reducing agents and prepared carbon spheres with the participation of sodium chloride to synthesize Ru-particles decorated CoB 2 O 4 supported on hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (Ru/CoB 2 O 4 @C) catalysts for efficient and durable H 2 generation through alkaline hydrolysis of NaBH 4 . The optimized catalyst with a Ru content of 3.0 wt% exhibits a high hydrogen generation rate of 8139 mL min −1 g cat - 1 gcat-1 and a low activation energy of 33.2 kJ mol −1 for NaBH 4 hydrolysis, which is one of the most efficient catalysts reported recently. The extraordinary performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between Ru and CoB 2 O 4 species and abundant oxygen vacancies, which facilitate charge redistribution and provide more active sites, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. Density functional theory calculations support the proposed Michaelis-Menten mechanism, where BH 4 − and H 2 O are adsorbed on electron-rich Ru and electron-deficient CoB 2 O 4 surfaces, respectively, and the reaction energy barrier for the rupture of the B-H bond as the rate-determining step is only 1.37 eV, synergistically promoting the hydrolysis of NaBH 4 . Our study provides an innovative method for designing efficient and stable catalysts for green hydrogen generation.

Optimizing the electronic structure of Ru catalyst through heterogeneous interfaces for long-term alkaline oxygen evolution under industrial current density

Yingying Wang,Hui Pan,Jiaojiao Bi,Peng Kang

The efficiency of hydrogen generation is constrained by oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which involves complex electron transfer processes. In order to design an efficient and stable catalyst for OER, we prepared a series of Ru-based catalysts by interface engineering and defect engineering. Among them, Ru–Co 3 O 4 -TM-8h demonstrated excellent OER activity (η = 243 mV @10 mA cm −2 ) and long-term stability (200 h @100 mA cm −2 ) in 1 M KOH. Besides, Ru–Co 3 O 4 -TM-8h || Pt/C can continuously operate for 100 h at 500 mA cm −2 . The loose and porous nano-flower morphology of Ru–Co 3 O 4 -TM-8h facilitates gas release and enhances electrolyte accessibility, exposing the active sites. The heterojunction interface between Ru and Co 3 O 4 optimizes the electronic structure of Ru sites, thereby suppressing the peroxidation reaction of Ru and improving the OER stability of Ru–Co 3 O 4 -TM-8h. This study offers valuable insights for the design of Ru-based catalysts with long-term stability in alkaline media.

Development of single-atom Ru and N, S-Co-doped carbon catalyst for enhanced cycling stability of lithium-oxygen batteries

Yanjie Xue,Jinsheng Zhao,Aifeng Li

Li-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) battery is a novel energy storage equipment. However, its poor reaction reversibility relating to the insoluble lithium peroxide (Li 2 O 2 ) generated during the discharge process, limits its application and development for large scale use. Therefore, the design and synthesis of effective catalysts which can efficiently catalyze the production and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 and exclude the generation of side-products has become the primary task to develop Li-O 2 batteries. Herein, a new type of electrocatalyst based on single-atom Ru and N, S-co-doped carbon materials (Ru/CNS/CNT) is introduced to reduce the overpotential of the battery reaction and accelerate the formation and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 . Galvanostatic charge-discharge tests were performed on the Li-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) battery with Ru/CNS/CNT as the cathode catalyst material. With a limited specific capacity of 1000 mA h g −1 , the battery can stably cycle for 79 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . Furthermore, the existence of the single atom of Ru was demonstrated according to the characterization of HAADF-STEM. The experimental results showed that composite material Ru/CNS/CNT can accelerate the formation and decomposition of lithium peroxide (Li 2 O 2 ), thereby greatly improving the cycling stability of the battery.

Rushuo Li,Linmeng Wang,Peiyun Zhou,Jing Lin,Zhiyuan Liu,Juan Chen,Danfeng Zhao,Xiubing Huang,Zhiping Tao,Ge Wang

Developing catalysts for dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) hydrogenation to tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (THDCPD) at low temperature is crucial and challenging for the green and energy-saving production of high energy density aviation fuel. Herein, hierarchically porous UiO-66(Ce) encapsulate Ru nanoclusters (NCs) was successfully customized by soft template method and in-situ reduction. The mesoporous UiO-66(Ce) promoted the high dispersion of Ru NCs, and the transfer of substrate molecules. By controlling the synthesis conditions, the electronic state, abundance, and microenvironment of Ru NCs were precisely regulated. Theory calculation and experimental results revealed that metallic Ru as the main active sites greatly promoted the adsorption and activation of substrate molecules. Therefore, mesoporous UiO-66(Ce) encapsulated Ru NCs showed remarkable catalytic DCPD hydrogenation performance with DCPD conversion of 100% and THDCPD selectivity of ~100% (60 °C, only 35 min). This study has brought new inspiration and guidance to the rational design of function materials for various catalytic applications.

Boosting the selective hydrogenation of biphenyl to cyclohexylbenzene over bimetallic Ni-Ru/SiO2 catalyst via enhancing strong metal-support interaction

Jingyi Yang,Yongzhen Gao,Jie Fan,Jieqiong Wang,Tao Yang,Zezheng Bing,Meng Zhang,Zhongyi Liu

Tuning the metal-support interaction (MSI) between highly dispersed nanosized metal particles and the support plays a pivotal role in the activity and selectivity of polyaromatics selective hydrogenation. In this work, the supported bimetallic Ni-Ru/SiO 2 -SEA catalyst was prepared by a strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) strategy, and applied for the selective hydrogenation of biphenyl (BP) to cyclohexylbenzene (CHB). Compared to the catalysts prepared by the conventional incipient wetness impregnation method and Ni/SiO 2 -SEA, the significant effects of MSI and hydrogen spillover on Ni-Ru/SiO 2 -SEA facilitated the highly exposed and uniformly dispersed electron-deficient Ni δ+ (0 < δ < 2) species, which could enhance adsorption and activation of the electron-withdrawing phenyl group and H 2 , thereby promoting the efficient and selective conversion of BP to CHB. At the conditions of 160 ℃ and 2 MPa H 2 pressure, BP conversion over Ni-Ru/SiO 2 -SEA reached nearly 100 % within 3 h, achieving a remarkable selectivity of 97.9 % towards CHB, along with a high turnover frequency of 2756.9 h −1 for the active metallic Ni sites. Importantly, according to the kinetic simulations, the hydrogenation rate constant of Ni-Ru/SiO 2 -SEA was the highest (2.76 × 10 -2 mol·g −1 ·h −1 ) among the employed catalysts. Moreover, after six consecutive cycles, no obvious decline in hydrogenation efficiency was observed, confirming the remarkable activity and stability of Ni-Ru/SiO 2 -SEA. Furthermore, the activation of BP and desorption of CHB pathway on the Ni δ+ species were elaborated through temperature-programmed desorption characterization, highlighting the prominent contribution of MSI in enhancing the selective hydrogenation of polyaromatics.

Determination of pentachlorophenol by anodic electrochemiluminescence of Ru(bpy)32+ based on nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots as co-reactant

Lijun Luo,Libo Li,Xixi Xu,Dong Liu,Jinyang Li,Kun Wang,Tianyan You

Sensitive and quantitative analysis of pentachlorophenol (PCP) is especially important in the field of ecology and agriculture. Herein, a highly sensitive and stable Ru(bpy)32+-based anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system utilizing nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) as a novel co-reactant was firstly constructed to detect PCP. In this system, Ru(bpy)32+ was used as luminophor, while NGQDs were applied as co-reactant in place of the toxic and volatile tripropylamine. The novel co-reactant not only promoted the luminous efficiency of Ru(bpy)32+, but also improved the stability of the ECL system. In addition, the enhancement mechanism of NGQDs on Ru(bpy)32+ and quenching mechanism of PCP on Ru(bpy)32+/NGQDs were investigated in detail. Under the optimum conditions, the as-fabricated sensor for ultrasensitive PCP determination expressed a wider linear range of 1 × 10−15 to 1 × 10−5 g mL−1 and a lower detection limit of 2 × 10−17 g mL−1 with good stability and repeatability. Furthermore, based on the distinctive advantages of the novel ECL sensor, it was successfully used to detect PCP in tap water and river water, and satisfactory recoveries were obtained.

Surface segregation on Ag@MNi (M = Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru) core–shell nanocrystals for enhancing the oxygen reduction performance

Xinyuan Zhou,Qiyan Sun,Xinlin Wang,Ruixue Zhang,Bin Li,Zexing Wu,Dehong Chen,Lei Wang,Guang-Rui Xu

Synthesis of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has received wide attention due to their sluggish kinetics, which limits the development and application of fuel cell technique. In this work, we report a versatile synthetic approach to prepare a series of small-sized Ag@MNi (M = Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru) nanocrystals with core–shell structures by a simple solvothermal method. According to characterization analysis, surface segregation of Pd was proved in the outermost layer with the Pd-rich shell layer, which can regulate the adsorption energy of *OH. Electrochemical results show that the onset potential and half-wave potential of Ag@PdNi nanocrystals (Ag@PdNi NCs) are 1.005 and 0.913 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively, with a Tafel slope of 55.31 mV dec -1 and strong ORR catalytic durability, which is similar to Ag@MNi (M = Pt, Rh, Ru) NCs and slightly higher than that of PdAg alloy nanoparticles (PdAg alloy NPs), PdNi alloy nanoparticles (PdNi alloy NPs), commercial Pd black and even commercial Pt/C, in alkaline medium. Density Functional (DFT) calculations show that the presence of Ag core effectively promotes the segregation of Pd atoms to the outer shell surface, where Ni provides better segregated substitution sites for Pd, which significantly improves the ORR activity and durability due to the electronic synergistic effect between Ag core nuclei and Pd shell can reduce the adsorption strength of OH ads .
