Homogeneous time-resolved FRET assay for the detection of Salmonella typhimurium using aptamer-modified NaYF4:Ce/Tb nanoparticles and a fluorescent DNA label

Wang Xiaole,Niazi Sobia,Yukun Huang,Sun Weijia,Wu Shijia,Duan Nuo,Hun Xu,Wang Zhouping

The authors describe an aptasensor based on time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (TR-FRET) for the identification of Salmonella typhimurium ( S. typhimurium ). Aptamer-functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) is used as the energy donor, and a complementary oligonucleotide (cDNA) labeled with carboxyfluorescein (FAM) acts as the acceptor. The detection scheme is based on the hybridization between aptamer and cDNA, upon which photonic energy is transferred from NPs to FAM unless aptamer interacts with S. typhimurium . Due to the highly specific recognition ability of aptamer and the strong fluorescence intensity of NPs, the method is highly sensitive and selective for S. typhimurium . Under the optimal conditions, at excitation wavelength of 273 nm, a delay time of 100 μs and a gating time of 1 ms, the integrated time-resolved fluorescence intensity ratio (FAM 520 /Tb 489 ) is linear in the 100 to 10 6  cfu·mL −1 range, and the limit of detection is as low as 25 cfu·mL −1 . The assay was applied to the analysis of eggs and chicken meat for S. typhimurium , and the results were consistent with those of a plate-counting method. Schematic of a homogeneous time-resolved FRET assay for the determination of Salmonella typhimurium by FRET between NaYF 4 :Ce/Tb nanoparticle-tagged aptamer and FAM-cDNA, with a good linearity and the limit of detection of 25 cfu mL −1 .

Quantitative characterization of Cr-adsorption on CeO2, pure and doped BaCeO3 and its impact on the electrochemical performance of Ce containing complex oxides

Yushan Hou,Jianfang Wu,Elena Yu. Konysheva

Quantitative analysis of Cr-adsorption from a gas phase on CeO 2 , pure and doped BaCeO 3 was performed in combination with surface techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy . The Cr-adsorption on BaCeO 3 is 3 times higher than on CeO 2 and it increases by 12–25% on In doping in Ba(Ce 1−x In x )O 3 (x = 0.1–0.3) in the temperature range of 600–700 °C. These perovskites adsorb chromium with the formation of a multi-phase surface layer containing BaCr 6+ O 4 and cerium oxide. Coexistence of small fractions of Cr 3+ and Cr 5+ cations in the surface layer was identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The thickness of the surface layer and its morphology vary with temperature, affecting the conductivity of Ce containing perovskites below 700 °C. BaCrO 4 exhibits under air noticeably larger anisotropic thermal expansion than BaCeO 3 . The results indicate that high tolerance to Cr-gaseous species should be considered as an important criterion for further development of materials for proton-conducting SOFCs.

Liping Zhang,Hexia Yuan,Yiyun An,Huitong Li,Yiqing Gao,Huaran Sun

Coking reverse osmosis concentrated water contains refractory organic pollutants . If not treated, it will generate hazardous solid waste that cannot be utilized in the subsequent evaporation and crystallization process . In order to effectively remove organic substances from coking reverse osmosis concentrated water, Ti/PbO 2 electrode, Ti/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode, and Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode were prepared. The electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealing that the average crystal grain size of lead dioxide on the surface of the Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode is 29.58 nm. The electrochemical performance of the electrodes was tested using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , which showed oxidation peaks at 1.37 V, 1.81 V, and 2.1 V for the Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode, with a charge transfer resistance of 56.34 Ω. Accelerated life test indicated that the Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode has an accelerated lifespan of 1050 min. The effects of interelectrode distance, pH value, current density , and other factors on the electrocatalytic oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylphenol by the Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode were investigated, achieving a removal efficiency of 98.67 % under optimal conditions. Performance analysis of the Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode demonstrated good stability. Treatment of actual coking reverse osmosis concentrated water using the Ti/P(ANI-co-Py)/Ce,Nd-PbO 2 electrode resulted in removal efficiencies of 87.76 %, 47.92 %, and 77.42 % for COD , TOC, and UV 254 , respectively. The current efficiency and energy consumption of electrocatalytic degradation of coking reverse osmosis concentrated water were 9.38 % and 0.15 kWh/g COD. This study provides a better treatment solution for the degradation of organic matter in coking reverse osmosis concentrated water.

Improvement of the Abrasion and Corrosion Resistance of a Waterborne Epoxy Coating by α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) with Dual Corrosion Inhibition Effects

Wei Ren,Qiuying Gao,Yujie Guo,Changhua Li,Xiaoyu Mao,Haijiao Sun,Yi He,Yang Bai

The introduction of poly(tannic acid) (PTA) and cerium ion [Ce(III)] on the surface of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) endowed the α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III)/waterborne epoxy composite coating with enhanced corrosion protection and wear resistance performances. The successful preparation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) was confirmed through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. PTA improved the compatibility between α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) and the waterborne epoxy resin due to the presence of organic groups from tannic acid. The wear resistance test indicated that the incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) effectively reduced the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to analyze the corrosion protection performance of unbroken coatings and the self-healing ability of scratched coatings. The incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) improved the protection performace distinctly. In addition, α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) endowed the composite coating with dual corrosion inhibition effects, originating from the PTA film, to prevent the penetration of corrosive media and a dense film that came from the Ce(III) cation. The waterborne epoxy system with enhanced corrosion and wear resistance in this paper broadens the application of α-ZrP.

Construction of relay reaction system by Co@S-1 and In-Ce/H-Beta for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with methane

Mingkang Zhang,Jingwei Wu,Haolin Yang,Xiaohan Wang,Zebao Rui,Junfei Chen

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with methane (CH4-SCR) is an effective way to simultaneously eliminate NOx and CH4 emissions. Development of efficient CH4-SCR reaction system with high NOx reduction activity and selectivity is highly desirable for its commercial application. Herein, a two-part relay reaction system, including sequentially Co@S-1 and In-Ce/H-Beta catalysts, is designed for boosting CH4-SCR. In this system, the Co@S-1 with high redox ability boosts NO oxidation to NO2 and generates key intermediate CH3NO2 that can partially be in situ oxidized and the excessive can migrate to In-Ce/H-Beta. Meanwhile, the inner synergistic effect between InO+ and CeO2 species on In-Ce/H-Beta not only exhibits fair CH4-SCR performance, also facilitates the formation of NO- 3 species to react with the migrated CH3NO2 from Co@S-1. Benefiting from the combination between outer active sites synergy and inner active sites synergy, the simultaneous efficient conversion of NOx (T50 = 380 ℃) and CH4 (T50 = 425 ℃) with well durability is achieved.

Effect of N-isopropylacrylamide and graphene oxide on the microstructure and performance of thermo-responsive membranes by Ce (IV)-induced redox radical polymerization

Lian Yang,Haoran Qiu,Guoliang Liu,Jiang Chang,Shaoxia Yang,Feng Xiao

In this study, a series of novel thermo-responsive materials were synthesized using polyvinylidene fluoride, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and graphene oxide (GO) via Ce (IV)-induced redox radical polymerization name as PNG. Thermo-responsive membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation. The results demonstrated that the C O and N-H stretching absorption intensities increased with the addition of NIPAM. XPS analysis demonstrated that the PNG1 membrane exhibited abundant functional group structure under the dosage of NIPAM at 1 g. The finger-like porous structure of membrane became longer and wider with the addition of NIPAM at 1 g, leading to a maximum porosity of 45.5 %. The CA decreased from 62.4 ° to 49.0 ° at 35 °C under the adding dosage of NIPAM at 1 g. The temperature-sensitive of PNG1 membrane was 35 °C. In addition, The PNG1 membrane had the lower R ir and higher flux recover than the others under the BSA rejection. According to the XDLVO theory analysis, the total interaction energy for PNG1 membrane achieved the maximum absolute values of −33.850 mJ/m 2 and −19.956 mJ/m 2 than the others under the temperature at 25 °C and 35 °C. This interaction influenced the adsorption between the pollutant and membrane surface, resulting in reversible fouling.

Mn‐doped CeO2 derived from Ce-MOF porous nanoribbons as highly active catalysts for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from CO2 and methanol

Wang Fei,Jin Yulong,Xue Yun,Yu Shuihang,Liu Na,Ma Qingxiang,Xu Jie,Xue Bing,Wei Xuejiao

It is desirable but challenging to develop highly-efficient catalysts for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and CO 2 . The vacancy-mediated incorporation of heteroatom into surface reconstruction is an efficient method of defect engineering for enhancing the catalytic properties. In this work, manganese-doped cerium oxide porous nanoribbons (Mn/CeO 2 -BTC) were prepared derived from a Ce-BTC by a sacrificial template approach. It is found that the catalytic activity of Mn/CeO 2 -BTC catalysts can be readily controlled by varying the amount of Mn dopants and the as-synthesized 0.1-Mn/CeO 2 -BTC exhibited an outstanding activity for the synthesis of DMC from CO 2 and methanol, which reached a high DMC yield (6.53 mmol DMC /g cat. ) without any dehydrating agents. Based on characterization results, the enhanced performance may be attributed to the defective structures caused by Mn doping and the porous nanoribbons of the CeO 2 crystals, which provide more surface oxygen vacancies and acidic-basic sites, favoring adsorption and activation of CO 2 and methanol.

Modulating structure of Ce-UiO-66 by introducing fluorinated terephthalic acid for enhanced removal efficiency of antibiotics: Insights into degradation kinetics and pathways

Dong Wang,Tinglue Zhang,Mohamed Gamal El-Din,Xuefen Wang

In this work, the 2-fluoroterephthalic acid with asymmetric structure and high electronegative F species was introduced in the assembly of Ce-UiO-66 catalysts to increase the defect density and enlarge pore structure for enhancement in removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole. Owing to the strong coordination ability from high electronegative F species of 2-fluoroterephthalic acid with Ce-oxo nodes, the designed CUF exhibited improved interfacial properties (accelerated electron transfer rate, available active sites and enhanced interaction with PMS), which was favorable for the exploration and accessibility of active sites with sulfamethoxazole and PMS to decrease the adsorption barrier and accelerate PMS activation. As a result, the CUF catalysts exhibited higher adsorption capacity (173.4 mg/g) than that of CUH (117.8 mg/g), the enhanced degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole with a rate constant higher than 2.3 times CUH, good elimination (>95 %) of methylene blue, tetracycline and ibuprofen. In addition, the CUF/PMS system possessed satisfactory stability in wide solution pH, recycling and real water and good potential application in continuous wastewater treatment based on the designed dynamic catalytic reactor. This work provided deep insight into the design of catalysts with high adsorption performance and degradation efficiency based on the structure–activity relationship.

Industrial-level electrocatalytic urea oxidation: The role of cerium doping in nickel phosphide (Ce-Ni5P4) for tuning electronic structure and promoting surface reconstruction

Yirui Wang,Liuping Liang,Yuqing Tang,Wanling Xiao,Tao Zhou,Peikang Shen,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Surface reconstruction is the key to improving the intrinsic activity of non-precious metal-based catalysts for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). In this work, Cerium doped Nickel phosphide (Ce-Ni 5 P 4 ) porous nanosheets were synthesized by conventional hydrothermal and phosphorylation methods. It is found that the introduction of Ce 4f induces the electron transfer from P and Ni to Ce, increasing the chemical state of Ni, boosting the reconstruction of Ni 5 P 4 toward active substances of NiOOH with higher UOR activity and improves the UOR intermediates adsorption behavior on the (210) crystal plane for efficient electrochemical reaction. The results show that Ce-doped Ni 5 P 4 improves the UOR performance of only 1.33 V at 500 mA cm −2 , and exhibits exceptional stability over 120 h. Meanwhile, the AEMWE assembly by Ce-doped Ni 5 P 4 || MoNi foam possess a lower voltage of 2.37 V than RuO 2 ||MoNi foam at 1 A cm −2 , demonstrating an excellent performance in industrial applications. The in-situ Raman confirms the enhanced electrochemical reconstruction process caused by the introduction of Ce, which promotes the large current density UOR process. The theoretical calculations show that the stable (210) crystal plane without reconstruction is activated by the Ce doping, and the modulated electron distribution around the Ni sites weakens the binding energy of the Ni N bond, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for more efficient reaction kinetics. This work provides a hierarchical reconstruction strategy to promote the coupling of activated structures and stable bulks, improving the catalytic UOR activity at large current density and providing new insights for the development of catalysts for industrial applications.

Transport properties of the Ba(Zr,Ce,Y,Yb)O3−δ proton conductor: the real role of co-substitution of Y and Yb

Hui Guo,Yifeng Li,Lulu Jiang,Yenan Sha,Shihang Guo,Donglin Han

Proton conducting oxides are attracting increasing attention due to their promising application as electrolytes in solid-state electrochemical devices for energy conversion and chemical production, including protonic ceramic fuel cells, electrolyzers and membrane reactors. BaZrO3 and Ba(Zr,Ce)O3 substituted by acceptor dopants are currently the most promising proton conductors. In principle, replacing Zr or Ce with one kind of trivalent element (e.g., Y or Yb) can generate oxygen vacancies, which are necessary for the hydration reaction to introduce charge carriers of protons. However, it is commonly recognized that substituting Zr or Ce with Y and Yb simultaneously leads to high performance of the devices, but the reason is not clear. In this work, we studied the transport properties of four different compositional classes: BaZr0.8−xCexY0.2O3−δ (BZCY20), BaZr0.8Y0.2−xYbxO3−δ (BZYYb), BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2−xYbxO3−δ (BZCYYb) and BaCe0.8Y0.2−xYbxO3−δ (BCYYb), at 600, 650 and 700 °C. For BZCY20, the ionic conductivity decreases on replacing Zr in BZY20 with x = 0.1 of Ce, increases with increasing Ce content within x = 0.1–0.5, and decreases on further increasing Ce content from x = 0.5 to 0.8. The ionic transport number increases with increasing Ce content. The ionic conductivity, partial conductivity of oxide ions and hole conductivity of BZCYYb and BCYYb increase with increasing Yb content. Since the increment of hole conductivity is larger, the ionic transport number decreases. For BZYYb, the ionic conductivity decreases and the hole conductivity increases with increasing Yb content, leading to decreasing ionic transport number. Both the high ionic conductivity and transport number are vital factors governing the performance of protonic ceramic cells (PCCs). Therefore, the improved performance of PCCs by adding both Y and Yb into the electrolyte cannot be explained from the viewpoint of electrical properties of the electrolytes. Thereby, we summarized our recent series of studies on the chemical compatibility between the electrolyte and NiO negatrode substrate, and suggested that the loss of dopant was suppressed by partly replacing Y with Yb. The high ionic conduction of the electrolyte can be maintained after co-sintering at high temperature to fabricate PCCs. This might be the real reason for the high performance of the devices using Y and Yb co-substituted electrolytes, prepared by the co-sintering method.

The impact of co-doping Ce, W, and Mn on the microstructure and piezoelectric performance of high-temperature piezoelectric ceramics based on CaBi2Nb2O9

Tianbao Xie,Rongxia Huang,Junhui Tan,Yan ning Luo,Hua-Tay Lin,Yejing Dai

CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (CBN) is a bismuth layered ferroelectric material with extremely high Curie temperature and low dielectric loss, which has great application potential in ultra-high temperature field. However, because of its low piezoelectric coefficient, its practical application still faces great challenges. This study successfully prepared Ca 1-x Ce x Bi 2 Nb 1.98 (W 2/3 Mn 1/3 ) 0.02 O 9 ( x  = 0–0.05) two-layer ferroelectric ceramics using direct-reaction sintering method. A pseudo tetragonal structure was successfully constructed near x  = 0.02 using the substitution method of Ce 4+ at site A, and W 6+ and Mn 4+ at site B, which altered the crystal structure of CBN based ceramics. The properties of CBN-based piezoelectric ceramics have been significantly improved by this modification. It has a higher piezoelectric constant ( d 33  = 20.6 pC/N) and Curie temperature ( T c  = 950 °C), while having a lower dielectric loss (tan δ  = 0.031 at 500 °C). In addition, CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 based piezoelectric ceramics also show excellent thermal stability. After annealing at 900 °C for 2 h, the d 33 value remained high at 19.2 pC/N, retaining about 93.2% of its original value. Therefore, these findings indicate that Ca 1-x Ce x Bi 2 Nb 1.98 (W 2/3 Mn 1/3 ) 0.02 O 9 is a high-temperature piezoelectric material with great potential.

Cerium dioxide restricted the growth of palladium nanoclusters for constructing pd–O–Ce bridge bonds: Efficient oxygen reduction and formic acid oxidation reactions

Qingcai Yu,Ying Chang,Shaohong Guo,Yaqiong Su,Jingchun Jia,Meilin Jia

In direct formic acid fuel cells, the formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) takes place at the anode, and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurs at the cathode. Whereas the cathode of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) also involves the ORR, these three electrochemical reactions collectively constitute the core processes of related energy devices. The study of the catalytic performance of palladium (Pd)-based catalysts has become a research focus. This study explores the utilization of rare earth metal-organic frameworks to enhance the interface interactions between Pd and CeO 2 . These frameworks facilitate the modulation of the electronic state of Pd, ensure site stability, and promote the generation of additional oxygen vacancies through bridge bonding between Pd–O–Ce. The Pd-CeO 2 /C(1:2) catalyst in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 exhibited high initial potential (0.86 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrodes (RHE)), half-wave potential (0.76 V vs. RHE), excellent ORR stability, and exceptional performance in ZAB cathodes with a power density reaching 195.4 mW·cm −2 . Furthermore, in FAOR (0.5 M H 2 SO 4  + 0.5 M HCOOH) applications, this catalyst displays significantly higher activity (991.4 mA·mg −1 ) and stability than commercial Pd/C and platinum/C catalysts while maintaining excellent selectivity for formic acid decomposition. Theoretical calculations further prove that the formation of the Pd–O–Ce bridge bond is conducive to FAOR's direct reaction pathway and avoids CO toxicity. The Pd-CeO 2 /C(1:2) catalyst is utilized in positive and negative electrodes within self-assembled H-type electrolytic cells, achieving open-circuit voltages superior to those offered by commercial catalysts, thus confirming its practical applicability.
