Structural reconstruction─an uncontrollable process that compromises the stability of Cu-based catalysts in electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R)─presents a major scientific challenge that has yet to be overcome. In this work, we develop a well-controlled SiO2 encapsulation approach to stabilize Cu-based CO2R electrocatalysts against reconstruction. Using Cu nanowires (CuNWs) as a model platform, we demonstrate that SiO2 encapsulation can significantly suppress Cu reconstruction while retaining ∼95% of the initial CO2R performance over 24-h stability tests at −1.15 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE). In contrast, unencapsulated CuNWs exhibit severe structural deterioration with attenuated CO2R activity under identical testing conditions. In situ Raman studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the antireconstruction effect results from the formation of a robust Cu–O–Si interface that can not only serve as a structural anchor but also contribute to strengthening the Cu–Cu bonding at the exposed Cu active sites during CO2R operation. These results decipher the stabilizing mechanism of SiO2 encapsulation, and provide key insights for designing durable Cu-based CO2R electrocatalysts toward practical applications.

Lithium metal anodes hold the potential for high-energy-density batteries due to their substantial theoretical capacity, but their practical application is hindered by issues such as dendrite growth, poor cycling stability, and safety concerns. This study presents the development of a three-dimensional Li-Si composite alloy anode (Ag@Cu@Li-Si), combining a porous copper scaffold with a lithiophilic silver (Ag) layer and a lithium-silicon (Li-Si) alloy. The Ag@Cu@Li-Si composite demonstrates significant improvements in dendrite suppression, cycling stability, and electrochemical performance. The composite anode exhibits a critical current density of 15 mA cm −2 and over 900 hours of stable operation at 1.0 mA cm −2 in symmetric cells. When integrated into a full cell with a commercial LiFePO 4 cathode, it maintains excellent cycling stability, delivering over 600 cycles with a rate capability of 1.0 C. This study provides valuable insights into the design of lithium metal anodes, highlighting the importance of lithiophilic materials and 3D frameworks for high-performance lithium-metal batteries.

Accurately detecting hydrogen sulfide in the environment and monitoring its pollution sources are crucial for pollution assessment and personal safety. However, rapid detection is a challenge due to the influence of carrier behavior and surface adsorption states. In this paper, Cu-doped W18O49 nanowires were synthesized by the solvothermal method. The surface field effect phenomenon resulting from doping and H2S adsorption enables a rapid response to H2S with significantly improved responsivity. We characterized the material’s structure and properties by SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques, verified the surface microelectric field effect by combining XPS and field effect device in situ gas sensing characterization, and discussed the sensitive mechanism of hydrogen sulfide.

SnTe is an environmentally friendly and promising alternative thermoelectric material in contrast to harmful PbTe. However, the long-lasting high lattice thermal conductivity significantly inhibits the further enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. Herein, this study proposed a strategy of solvothermal copper doping to considerably reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by introducing multiscale hierarchical structures. The structural and morphological characterizations indicate that Cu was doped as interstitial atoms and secondary-phase Cu1.80Te. Simultaneously, this study reveals that Cu1.80Te and the SnTe matrix stem from nanoparticles and octahedral structures, respectively. In the sintered bulks, phonon scattering was significantly increased owing to the abundant micro/nanopores, Cu1.80Te nanoprecipitates, grain boundaries of SnTe, and phase boundaries between Cu1.80Te and SnTe. The increased phonon scattering leads to a lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.36 W m–1 K–1 at 773 K, which is lower than that of pristine SnTe. Benefiting from this substantially decreased thermal conductivity, a ZT value of ∼0.91 was achieved in Sn0.98Cu0.02Te. The enhancement is ∼300% over pristine SnTe. This work provides an effective method to fabricate high-performance energy-effective SnTe-based thermoelectric materials.

An ECL signal amplification strategy is introduced leveraging a multimetallic catalytic amplification effect. Nickel–iron bimetallic oxide compounds were synthesised and loaded with Cu SAs catalysts on their surface to create nickel–iron layered double hydroxides/copper single atoms (NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs) with robust catalytic properties. These NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs were employed as signal amplification elements to modify gold electrodes. C-dots labelled with thiacloprid DNA aptamers were used as the signal and molecular recognition elements to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor. The NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs significantly amplified the ECL signal of the C-dots, enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. Upon capturing thiamethoxam via the aptamer, the ECL signal was effectively quenched, demonstrating the potential of this approach as a highly sensitive method for thiamethoxam detection. The excellent catalytic performance of NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs amplified the detection signal over 20-fold, while the aptamer improved the specificity of the sensor for thiamethoxam recognition. The method demonstrates a linear range of 2–6000 × 10 −12 mol/L and a detection limit of 6.52 × 10 −13 mol/L, with recoveries of 90%–110% for real sample analysis. This study demonstrates a highly sensitive and specific method for thiamethoxam detection, with real-world applicability, while highlighting an innovative multimetallic catalytic strategy that can facilitate advancements in sensor design across various fields. The instability of Zn anodes arising from uncontrolled deposition remains a critical bottleneck for zinc-metal batteries. Here, a sustainable Zn/Cu co-deposition strategy is reported via a cost-effective ethanol-based hybrid electrolyte (EtZCL-Cu) containing ZnCl 2 and insoluble Cu(OH) 2 additives. The high Cl − concentration enables continuous Cu 2+ release via complexation-driven Cu(OH) 2 dissolution, facilitating spontaneous Zn/Cu displacement-alloying reactions during cycling. This dynamic reconstruction mechanism ensures long-term exposure of zincophilic Cu sites on the electrodeposited Zn surface, thereby effectively preventing the defunctionalization of zincophilic alloy interfaces. The reconfigurable alloy interface maintains zero nucleation overpotential and enables dendrite-inhibited Zn electrodeposition, achieving exceptional cycling stability (>6000 h) in Zn symmetric cells. The ethanol solvent and Cl − complexed Cu + /Cu 2+ redox couple cooperatively increase the capacity of the activated carbon cathode full cells, delivering >90 mAh g −1 over 10,000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , with 95.9% capacity retention. This work establishes a sustainable interfacial engineering paradigm through electrolyte-mediated in situ alloying, effectively addressing the critical challenge of zincophilic interface defunctionalization in Zn-metal battery systems.

Respiratory pathogens transmitted via clinical textiles represent a major source of hospital-acquired infections, yet current antibacterial fabric strategies are limited by poor durability and weak bacterial inhibition. Here, we reported a molecular-level strategy for the fabrication of copper-doped antibacterial cotton textiles (Cu@textile) via a simple immersion of common cotton in a Cu(II)- saturated NaOH solution. This process enabled stable coordination between the copper ions and cellulose hydroxyl groups, forming stable Cu-O bonds throughout the fiber matrix. Structural and spectroscopic analyses confirmed uniform copper integration and chemical bonding. The resulting Cu@textile exhibited potent, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against key respiratory pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with > 99% sterilization efficiency. Mechanistic studies revealed this efficacy as copper-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and bacterial membrane disruption. This accessible and scalable antimicrobial textile eliminates the need for specialized equipment or nanoparticle synthesis, and may represent a strategic intervention to reduce bacteria propagation and contact infection risks in healthcare settings.

The persistent challenge of nitrate (NO 3 – ) pollution in water systems, profoundly impacting ecosystems and human health, demands effective remediation strategies. Here, we present an innovative S-scheme Cu@CN/TiO x heterojunction for high-efficiency photocatalytic denitrification (PCDN). Evaluation of its performance demonstrates exceptional NO 3 – removal efficiency (99.5%) and remarkable N 2 selectivity (95.5%), with 13.7 and 4.1 times higher rate constants of NO 3 – removal than the individual Cu@CN and TiO x components. Notably, this catalyst exhibits impressive stability across multiple cycles, maintaining consistent high conversion rates and selectivity. Mechanistic insights unveiled a tandem reaction pathway where Cu@CN selectively reduced NO 3 – to NO 2 – , followed by the TiO x -mediated CO 2 • – generation, enabling highly selective NO 2 – to N 2 conversion. This unique catalytic system, featuring spatially separated redox-active sites, presents a promising avenue for efficient, selective, and stable denitrification processes, offering significant potential in addressing water pollution challenges and advancing tandem catalytic systems.

Cu-based catalysts attract considerable attention because of their exceptional CO 2 photo-/electro-/thermo-reduction capacities, where Cu(I) is generally treated as the active species. However, a significant problem hindering the large-scale applications of Cu-based catalysts is the inactivation of Cu(I) via irreversible redox to Cu(II)/Cu(0). This study proposes a Cu(I) valence pinning method based on hydroxyapatite (HAP). Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that the phonon resonance among the Cu(I) ions, their adjacent heteroatoms, and the intermediates adsorbed at the Cu(I) sites yields Cu(I) valence electrons in their lowest energy states. Thus, Cu(I) is stabilized, stable, and efficient photothermal CO 2 hydrogenation is promoted. However, because of the change of Cu(I) coordination environment during the CO 2 hydrogenation reaction, Cu(I) ions migrate into the bulk phase, leading to activity attenuation. Nevertheless, Cu(I) ions can be pulled out to the surface of HAP under the oxidative humid air condition, and the catalytic activity can be easily recovered. Thus, we propose a simple cyclic reaction/regeneration process. This enables the Ca 5 (FeCuCe) 5 -HAP catalyst to achieve the CO yield of 402.8 mmol g −1 h −1 and a CO 2 conversion rate of 27.7%, which is close to the thermodynamic equilibrium. This catalyst also displays a selectivity of approximately 100% and cycle stability of 156 h at 500 °C under a pressure of 1 atmospheric. Our study provides a viable method for the scale applications of Cu(I) based catalysts in the “negative carbon” industries.

Photothermal catalysis of CO 2 hydrogenation holds great potential in achieving carbon neutrality . However, the rational design of cost-effective photothermal catalysts with high performance for CO 2 hydrogenation is an ongoing challenge. Herein, we employed CuCo y BOₓ composite catalysts by incorporating both CuBOₓ and amorphous CoBOₓ to efficiently catalyze the CO 2 hydrogenation. Besides the high selectivity (98.0%), the optimized CuCo 5 BO x demonstrated a remarkable CO yield of 124.7 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ under illumination at 300°C, which was 3 times higher than the traditional thermocatalysis. Experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrated CuBOₓ acted as a photocatalyst , donating electrons to CoBOₓ active sites. Coupling boron-oxygen species with CuCo bimetallic-oxides synergically enhanced the CO 2 adsorption capacity and accelerated charge transfer, thereby enhancing the photothermal synergistic effect and consequently boosting the catalytic activity. This study establishes an approach for the rational design of non-precious metal-boride catalysts, enabling efficient photothermal conversion of CO 2 into CO under mild conditions.

Cu-based catalysts exhibit excellent performance in hydrogenation reactions. However, the poor stability of Cu catalysts under high temperatures has restricted their practical applications. The preparation of stable Cu catalysts supported by SiO 2 with strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) has thus aroused great interest due to the high abundance, low toxicity, feasible processability, and low cost of SiO 2 . The challenge in the construction of such SMSI remains to be the inertness of SiO 2 . Herein, a simple and scalable method is developed to prepare 2D silica (2DSiO 2 ) supported Cu catalysts with SMSI by carefully manipulating the topological exfoliation of CaSi 2 with CuCl 2 and thereafter calcination. The prepared Cu-2DSiO 2 catalysts with the unique encapsulated Cu nanoparticles exhibit excellent activity and long-term stability in high-temperature CO 2 hydrogenation reactions. This feasible and low-cost solution for stabilizing Cu catalysts might shed light on their realistic applications.

Recently, I-III-VI type quantum dots (QDs) have attracted considerable attention in display technology due to their large-scale tunable emission and environmentally friendly characteristics. However, within this family, narrow-bandwidth Cu-based QDs have rarely been reported. Herein, the synthesis of narrow-bandwidth blue-emitting Cu-Ga-S (CGS)-based QDs is reported by a hot-injection method for the first time, boasting a narrow full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 29 nm, closely approaching that of traditional Cd-based QDs. Through precisely controlling the temperature of nucleation stage, CGS-based QDs showcase a representative blue emission at 475 nm, featuring the narrowest FWHM and a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 32%. Besides, the femtosecond transient fluorescence (fs-TA) characterization indicates that the narrow-bandwidth luminescence is attributed to band-to-hole recombination rather than donor-acceptor pair (DAP) recombination. The work opens a new avenue for narrow-bandwidth I-III-VI QDs, offering increased potential for applications in blue-light-emitting devices.
