Highly efficient steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) over CeOx grown on the nano NixMgyO matrix: H2 production under a high GHSV condition

Xiang Luo,Yu Hong,Honglei Zhang,Kaiqi Shi,Gang Yang,Tao Wu

Summary Steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) over non-noble metal catalysts is normally conducted at high temperature (>600°C) to thermodynamically favour the catalytic process and carbon deposition mitigation. However, high temperature inhibits water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) and therefore restrains the yield of H 2 and leads to the formation of an excessive amount of CO. The modification of non-noble metal catalyst to enhance WGSR is an attractive alternative. In this study, CeO x was firstly loaded onto a nano-scaled Ni x Mg y O matrix and subsequently used as the catalyst for hydrogen production via SRE. Morphology of the catalyst materials was characterized by using a series of technologies, while H 2 -temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), CO-temperature programmed deposition (CO-TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were employed to study the surface nickel, ceria clusters, and their interactions. The catalytic activity and durability of the catalyst were studied in the temperature region of 500°C to 800°C. The CeO x -coated nano Ni x Mg y O matrix exhibited an outstanding hydrogen yield of 4.82 mol/mol ethanol under a high gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 200 000 hour −1 . It is found that the unique Ni 0 -CeO x structure facilitates the adsorption of CO on the surface and therefore promotes the effective hydrogen production via WGSR. Moreover, this modified Ni x Mg y O matrix was found to be a more robust and anticoking nanocatalyst because of reversible switch between Ce 4+ and Ce 3+ .

ZnCr Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) Nanosheets Assisted Formation of Hierarchical Flower-Like CdZnS@LDH Microstructures with Improved Visible-Light-Driven H2 Production

Lihua Yao,Ding Wei,Dongpeng Yan,Changwen Hu

Graphical Flower power : Hierarchical flower-like CdZnS@LDH microarchitectures were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis and exhibited enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic H 2 production compared with pristine CdZnS microspheres. The development of new semiconductor photocatalysts toward splitting water has supplied a promising way to obtain sustainable and clean hydrogen energy. Herein, CdZnS@layered double hydroxide (LDH) composites with a hierarchical flower-like microstructure have been fabricated with the aid of ZnCr–LDH nanosheets as templates. XRD, SEM and HRTEM show that the ZnCr–LDH nanosheets are uniformly dispersed within the composites. The surface of the hierarchical structures is rough and composed of numerous nanocrystals of CdZnS. The HRTEM images indicate that the surface of CdZnS nanocrystals is mainly composed of the (111) plane. Moreover, the visible-light-driven H 2 production performance of the CdZnS in the presence and absence of ZnCr–LDH nanosheets has been measured. The results show that ZnCr–LDH nanosheets play an important role in the hierarchical morphology and photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples. In the water-splitting process, the visible-light-driven H 2 -production rate of hierarchical flower-like CdZnS@LDH is 4.03 times and nearly 10 times higher than that of pristine CdZnS microsphere and pure commercial CdS, respectively. Therefore, this work not only achieves enhanced catalytic performance of the CdZnS by the introduction of ZnCr–LDH nanosheets, but also supplies an insight into the relationship between the hierarchical morphology and the semiconductor photocatalytic activity.

Cu-catalytic generation of reactive oxidizing species from H2 and O2 produced by water electrolysis for electro-fenton degradation of organic contaminants

Xiaofeng Xu,Peng Liao,Songhu Yuan,Man Tong,Mingsen Luo,Wenjing Xie

A novel Pd-based electro-Fenton process has recently been developed to degrade organic contaminants in wastewaters and groundwater. However, the high cost of Pd catalyst limits the application of this process. In this study, Cu supported on bamboo charcoal (Cu/C) was synthesized to evaluate the feasibility of substituting Pd catalysts. Using phenol as a probe organic contaminant, the performance of Cu/C catalyst was evaluated for the electro-Fenton degradation of phenol in a typical undivided electrolytic system. The electrochemical degradation of phenol in the presence of Cu/C was significant, following a pseudo-first-order kinetics with rate constant ( k 1 ) of 0.008   min −1 . The addition of Fe 2+ remarkably enhanced the degradation ( k 1   =   0.012   min −1 ). H 2 O 2 and OH were validated as the reactive oxidizing species (ROSs), and OH was the main ROS contributing to phenol degradation. The as-synthesized Cu/C consisting of Cu, CuO and Cu 2 O could catalyze the production of H 2 O 2 from chemisorbed H 2 and O 2 as well as the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to OH. Particularly, the addition of Fe 2+ facilitated the transformation of H 2 O 2 to OH. Phenol degradation increased with increasing the current from 5 to 50   mA and decreased with the further increase to 100   mA. The degradation improved with the increase in Cu loadings and the decrease in solution pH. The presence of NaNO 3 , Na 2 SO 3 or Na 2 S inhibited the degradation, while the presence of NaCl increased the degradation. Although the activity of Cu/C is much lower than that of Pd/C for phenol degradation, the cost of Cu/C is much lower.

Facile Fabrication and Mechanism of Single-Crystal Sodium Niobate Photocatalyst: Insight into the Structure Features Influence on Photocatalytic Performance for H2 Evolution

Qianqian Liu,Lu Zhang,Yuanyuan Chai,Wei-Lin Dai

Single-crystal sodium niobate with wire- and cube-like structures has been created by a facile and eco-friendly route including a hydrothermal as well as in-site self-assembled process via optimizing thermal treatment temperature. Comparative studies were carried out to evaluate the structure and phase transformation during the fabrication course. A possible growth mechanism of NaNbO3 with controllable morphologies was elucidated based on the time- and temperature-dependent evolution experiments. In addition, special attention was paid to figure out the mutual relationship between the unique structure features and photocatalytic performance toward photocatalytic H2 evolution. The results illustrated that the NaNbO3 nanowires formed at 500 °C calcinations exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity compared with other materials and presented super stability as well. The superior photocatalytic performance could be interpreted in terms of the better crystalline, fewer defects, and perfect 1D nanowire morphology as demonstrated by TEM and SEM images, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy analysis. Additionally, a deep insight into the underlying of the photocatalytic reaction mechanism was proposed. These findings shed light on an efficient and facile pathway for the creation and formation mechanisms of photocatalytic materials, which provided new opportunities for solar-energy conversion.

Enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution: optimized atomic hydrogen desorption via free-electron transfer in sulfur-rich MoWS2+x on vacancy-engineered CdS crystals

Ruiding Fei,Jianfeng Zhao,Huinan Wang,Huijuan Lin,Kui Xu,Guang Zeng,Wenchao Wang,Zhiping Yan

The hydrogen evolution capacity of MoS2 is impeded by its intrinsically highly electronegative sulfur sites, which firmly bind absorbed atomic H through S–Hads bonds and subsequently diminish H2 release. Designing effective surface-active sites to optimize atomic hydrogen activation and desorption for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water, while also expanding near-infrared (NIR) light responsiveness, remains a significant challenge. We have developed complexes of sulfur vacancy (Sv) enriched CdSv capped with W-modified MoS2+x (MoWS2+x) through an in situ substitution approach, followed by a photoreduction reaction. The bimetallic MoWS2+x cocatalyst not only increases the density of unsaturated coordinating S active sites but also attenuates the strength of the S–Hads bond. The optimized MoWS2+x/CdSv hybrid shows synergistic improvement of atomic H activation and desorption for the solar-driven HER, achieving the highest recorded H2-evolution rate of 9166.13 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm), which marks a substantial improvement (greater than 750%), and an apparent quantum yield of 19.13%. Remarkably, the target photocatalyst, which is abundant in sulfur vacancies within its CdSv component, also achieves H2 production driven by NIR light beyond 780 nm, with a H2 evolution rate of 1326.82 μmol g−1 h−1. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations corroborate that the existence of unsaturated coordinated S sites mitigates the strength of S–Hads bonds, resulting in the high driving force of H2 bubble release from water and long-lived active charge carriers. In this paper, we constructed visible light and NIR-active photocatalysts successfully for hydrogen production, highlighting the synergetic effects within this unique system. Additionally, the photo-behaviors of charge carriers have been investigated by ultra-fast spectroscopic techniques to gain a deeper understanding of the interfacial charge transfer kinetics. This study provides valuable insights into the development and optimization of photocatalysts that are responsive to both NIR and visible light, paving the way for more efficient solar-driven applications.

Enhanced interfacial electric field via sulfur vacancies modified ZnIn2S4-Vs@NiIn2S4 S-scheme photocatalysts for simultaneous H2 evolution and benzyl alcohol oxidation

Maoquan Wu,Yang Yang,Shouchun Ma,Xu Guo,Haochen Yu,Yaodan Cao,Jie Wu,Li Liu,Tongjie Yao

Designing and developing efficient photocatalysts for H 2 evolution and simultaneous oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) in aqueous environments provides a cutting-edge strategy for green synthesis. Nevertheless, the photocatalysts suffer from the low photoconversion efficiency because of the sluggish dynamics and repaid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, which hindering their widespread applications. To address the limitation, a multifunctionnal sulfur vacancies (SVs) modified ZIS-Vs@NIS S-scheme heterojunction with a strong interfacial electric field effect was synthesized to use photocatalytic H 2 production and BA oxidation, simultaneously. Experimental analysis supports that the synergistic effect of SVs and S-scheme heterojunction engineering result in a suitable energy band structure alignment and larger Fermi level potential difference. Those factors can realize effective charge transfer and separation, and enhance the photocatalytic performance. As anticipated, ZIS-Vs@NIS exhibited a superior photocatalytic performance with H 2 and benzaldehyde (BAD) yields up to 168.1 and 146.1 μmol under the simulated solar-light irradiation for 1.0 h, respectively, which are approximately 13.3 and 11.8 times higher than pristine ZIS. Moreover, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution coupled with BA oxidative dehydrogenation mechanism via S-scheme heterojunction over ZIS-Vs@NIS is also demonstrated in detail.

In situ prepared ionic liquids containing moisture-resistant bismuth-based perovskite crystals enhance the photocatalytic water purification and H2 production of MOF

Yao-Yao Wang,Yu-Qing Wang,Li-Xia Bao,Chunfeng Wang,Zhaoyang Wang,Hongjie Zhu,Hui-Juan Wang

Perovskite materials have been found to enhance the photocatalytic performances of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) through the formation of heterojunctions. In this study, two novel perovskite crystals: N-methylbenzothiazoleBiI 4 (BtzBiI 4 ) and 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazoleBiI 4 (MpiBiI 4 ) were obtained by in situ alkylation of 1-methylbenzimidazole and benzothiazole to prepare 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazole iodide and N-methylbenzothiazolium iodide ionic liquids. BtzBiI 4 and MpiBiI 4 crystals exhibit remarkable stability in aqueous solutions and broad UV–visible light absorption properties within 680 nm and 640 nm, respectively. Subsequently, a post-modification strategy was employed to integrate these perovskites with the zirconium-based MOF NH 2 -UiO-66 (U6N) and small-sized Pt clusters, resulting in the fabrication of perovskite quantum dots/Pt@U6N composite heterojunction photocatalysts for hydrogen production and water purification. Consequently, under visible light irradiation, the reduction efficiency of Cr (VI), degradation efficiencies rhodamine B (Rh B) and tetracycline (TC) of BtzBiI 4 QDs modified Pt@U6N (BPU) can reach 93.4 %, 98.9 % and 99.4 %, respectively. The H 2 production rate in water could be further boosted to 1044.25μmol g -1 h −1 by using BPU. Using MpiBiI 4 QDs modified Pt@U6N (MPU), the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency can reach 955.37μmol g -1 h −1 . This work comprehensively explores the role of ionic liquid-assisted preparation of moisture-resistant perovskites and their charge transfer dynamics in heterojunctions with MOFs, and introduces efficient photocatalysts for waste water purification.

Ce-modified Cu nanoparticles with N-doped carbon encapsulation for efficient H2 production from aqueous phase reforming of methanol at low temperatures

Zhuoyu Zheng,Yuxin Ge,Weiwei Lu,Yiyuan Zhou,Haiping Zhu,Pengxiang Gao,Caimei Li,Wenzheng Lei,Pengcheng Zhao,Jiajin Li,Minglei Lu,Tiejun Wang

Aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM) for both hydrogen (H 2 ) production and high pressure storage shows promising potential in mobile/distributed fuel cell stations or vehicles. Currently, achieving efficient H 2 production with low CO selectivity (S-CO) at lower temperatures remains a challenge for its application in these fields (rapid start and running in cycles). Herein, the catalyst of Ce-modified Cu nanoparticles with N-doped carbon encapsulation (Cu-CeO 2 @PVP catalyst) is developed to give excellent H 2 production rate at low temperatures ranging from 110 °C to 180 °C, ensuring excellent hydrothermal stability. The H 2 production rate of 32.56 μmol·g cat -1 ·s −1 at 180 °C is 6.1 times to 10.2 times higher than those of commercial catalysts, which demonstrates its superior performance. The combined effect of Cu + /Cu 0 and CeO 2 promotes the H 2 production from CH 3 OH/H 2 O. It also suppresses the CO formation by enhancing the H 2 O dissociation, CO conversion and HCOOH decomposition in APRM. The stable high purified H 2 flow from the integrated slurry bed APRM device can start immediately the fuel cell vehicle without any delay.

Constructing surface oxygen vacancy-rich ln2O3-x/tubular carbon nitride S-scheme heterojunction for selective biomass-derivative oxidation coupled with H2 production

Xukai Xia,Yanyan Jia,Weikang Wang,Jifang Zhang,Lele Wang,Qinqin Liu

The integration of selective oxidation of renewable biomass and its derivatives with hydrogen (H 2 ) production holds significant potential for simultaneously yielding value-added chemicals and “green H 2 ”, contributing to addressing sustainability challenges. The S-scheme charge transfer mechanism enhances charge separation by maintaining strong redox potentials at both ends, facilitating both oxidation and reduction reactions. Herein, we synthesize a visible-light-responsive, oxygen vacancy-rich In 2 O 3- x /tubular carbon nitride (IO OV /TCN) S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst via electrostatic adherence for selective 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), alongside H 2 production. Under anaerobic conditions and visible-light irradiation, the optimal IO OV /TCN-10 catalyst achieves an HMF conversion of 94.8% with a selectivity of 53.6% for DFF and FDCA, and a H 2 yield of 754.05 μmol g −1 in 3 h. The significantly improved photocatalytic activity results from enhanced visible-light absorption, reduced carrier recombination, and abundant catalytic active sites due to the synergistic effect of surface oxygen vacancies, the hollow nanotube-based architecture, and the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This work highlights the great potentials of S-scheme heterojunctions in biomass conversion for sustainable energy use and chemical production.

Zhou Wenbo,Huang Yichao,Cai Hanqing,Wang Tao,Li Haitao,Zhang Chao,Zhao Lianming,Chen Lulu,Liao Meihong,Tang Zhiqing,Chen Kai,Gu Jing,Gao Wenpei,Fan Zhuangjun,Wen Zhenhai

A strongly coupled platinum/molybdenum nitrides nanocluster heterostructure has been prepared by using Pt-containing Anderson-type polyoxometalates as precursors. The pronounced electronic coupling at the Pt/Mo 2 N cluster interface facilitates the catalytic decomposition of H 2 O through synergistic stabilization of Pt-H * and Mo-OH * . The optimized Pt/Mo 2 N-NrGO exhibits a remarkably low overpotential, high mass activity, and exceptional long-term durability (>500 h at 1500 mA cm -2 ) in a practical anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer.

Synergistic effect of homogeneously dispersed Pt nanoparticles on the surface of self-sensitized porphyrin metal–organic frameworks for effective photocatalytic H2 evolution

Lina Xiao,Qiuping Zhang,Xinzhi Wang,Honglei Shuai,Hui Lu,Xiaoyan Li,Xiaojian Yang,Hao Zhang

Recently, there has been significant interest in the investigation of high-efficiency photocatalysts utilizing metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The combination of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) into MOFs to form composites, such as platinum NPs (PtNPs)/MOFs, has become a prevalent and widely employed method in the field of photocatalysis. In this investigation, a simple method was employed to distribute PtNPs uniformly across the surface of a self-sensitized palladium porphyrin MOF (PCN-222(Pd)). When subjected to irradiation by visible light, the hybrid material 3%Pt/PCN-222(Pd) demonstrated a notably effective rate of 3932 μmol g -1 h - 1 photocatalytic H 2 generation from the water, which is 2.2 times greater than a single PCN-222(Pd). This improvement may be related to the coordination of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) between C=O and Zr 4+ , which enhances the interaction of PtNPs with PCN-222(Pd) nanorods. Consequently, the long-life electrons from Pd-metalized tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (PdTCPP) photosensitizers rapidly shift towards the electron capture site of PtNPs, significantly reducing the occurrence of recombination between photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The utilization of the synergistic effect of Pd-porphyrin photosensitizers and PtNPs co-catalyst in this technique efficiently enhances electron transport between Pd-porphyrin and PtNPs units, hence promoting the rate of H 2 evolution.

Synergy of sulfur vacancy and piezoelectric effect to tune charge migration in Sv-ZnIn2S4/UiO-66-NH2 for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Ming Fang,Zhenfei Yang,Yang Guo,Shuqin Yuan,Xinnian Xia,Shuaijun Pan

High-performance photocatalytic H 2 evolution materials require strong light absorption capability, excellent photogenerated charge separation ability and efficient charge carrier migration capability. In this study, we designed a piezoelectric photocatalytic heterojunction composed of UiO-66-NH 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets with sulfur vacancies. The Sv-UZ-45 heterojunction achieved piezoelectric photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance of 3886.4 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 , with a 4.6 times enhancement due to the synergistic effect of piezoelectric effect and defect engineering. The introduction of sulfur vacancies enables the heterojunction to obtain stronger light absorption, while the higher CB position of rich-sulfur vacancies ZnIn 2 S 4 is more favorable for the photocatalytic reduction reaction. In addition, the heterojunction with rich-sulfur vacancies exhibits a stronger piezoelectric effect than without vacancies, thus providing a powerful driving force for the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Finally, ESR was used to explain the potential photocatalytic mechanism and showed that Sv-UZ-45 adheres to the Z-scheme carrier migration pathway. This work elucidates the synergistic interaction between piezoelectric effect and defect engineering, providing new insights for the further development of high-performance piezoelectric photocatalysts.
