A naked-eye detector based on a rapid transmittance response to alcohol was designed to offer real-time and reusable detection of fruit freshness. To ensure the hydrophobicity of the fibrous membrane and high light transmission response to alcohol, fluorine-rich poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) with a low refractive index was selected as the shell layer, while sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were selected as the core layer for coaxial electrospinning. The core–shell fibrous detector was obtained by treatment with CaCl2 to form a stable hydrogel and by water flushing to remove PVA. The interior structure of the fiber and its evolution were investigated with increasing SA concentration, which changed from a nonconcentric structure to a core–shell structure. Without SA, nonconcentric structured fibers were obtained due to high flowability and incompatibility between the organic solvent phase of PVDF-HFP and the aqueous phase of PVA. As the SA concentration increased, the enhanced viscosity and surface tension decreased the asymmetric mobility significantly, which competed with the charge attractive forces from the Taylor cone surface, leading to a core–shell structure. The as-spun membranes were opaque due to light scattering at the interface between air and fiber and became light transparent after immersion in a rotten fruit-containing alcohol and acetic acid due to a decreased light loss. The rapidly responsive, reusable fibrous membranes with over 90% light transparency developed here have high potential for application in visual intelligent packaging to monitor the freshness of fruits and vegetables.

Recently, the three-dimensional (3D) porous cellular foam derived from poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) via a simple CO 2 -assisted procedure has been widely applied as electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials due to its one-step preparation process and high void fraction. However, delicate control of 3D microcellular structure by decoration of dielectric/magnetic components is still virgin. Herein, the hierarchical structure of 3D PVDF foam decorated with an ultra-low content of graphene nanoplates (5.0 wt%) and Ni nanochains (2.4 wt%) was successfully fabricated. The correlation between microcellular structure, and electrical conductivity/microwave absorption was systematically investigated. After introducing the conductive and magnetic components, a strong enhancement of dielectric loss, coming from the presence of conduction loss and polarization loss of 3D network, and magnetic loss, originating from strong eddy current loss and the natural resonance, was observed. Meanwhile, a high void fraction (∼92%) greatly optimized the impedance matching of incident waves and favored the multi-scattering. As a result, the superior microwave absorption was obtained, in which the effective absorption bandwidth (frequency with 90% microwave dissipation) can cover the whole K band (18–26.5 GHz) under the thickness of 3 mm. Overall, this work provides an ameliorated strategy for porous foams applied in microwave absorption.

Organic pollutants, such as dyes, contaminated water bodies seriously. Suitable materials and efficient technologies for degrading pollutants needed to be explored to protect the environment and human health. In this investigation, PVDF(PAA-g-β-CD)@TiO 2 hybrid film was prepared by a combination of “in situ hydrothermal-vapor induction” under mild conditions. The distribution, particle size, and interaction with the film surface for TiO 2 were investigated by XRD , XPS , SEM, and EDS . The TiO 2 nanoparticles were firmly immobilized and uniformly distributed on the hybrid film surface. Poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) on the film matrix were connected by the chemical bond, which provided stable nucleation and growth sites for TiO 2 while inhibiting photogenerated electron-hole recombination and significantly enhancing the adsorption ability. Furthermore, the multiple interaction forces (hydrogen bonding, coordination, and hydrophilic-hydrophilic interactions) between the film matrix and the TiO 2 were evaluated by simulated geometries and theoretical calculations. The multiple interactions reduced the band gap (Eg) while endowing the hybrid photocatalytic film with excellent degradation efficacy ( η ), stability, and recycling properties. Finally, the η of methylene blue (MB) reached 97.34 % within 120 min and remained above 90 % even after 8 reuses. It was believed that PVDF(PAA-g-β-CD)@TiO 2 film provided an approach for the mild preparation of polymer/TiO 2 hybrid film with high catalytic activity and optimization of photocatalytic properties.

The increasing utilization of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes in water treatment has necessitated the development of membranes with superior separation, antifouling performance and high pure water permeability. As a hydrophilic and antibacterial modifier, quaternized graphene oxide (QGO) has been successfully applied to improve the antifouling and antibacterial properties of the membranes simultaneously. Herein, we proposed a simple and effective strategy to fabricate a nanocomposite ultrafiltration membrane by coating the PVDF membrane surface with QGO and using polydopamine (PDA) as a “bio-glue”. The filtration followed by cross-linking method was utilized to construct a “brick-mud” structure on the membrane surface. The prepared QGO/PDA-PVDF membrane exhibited favorable separation and antifouling properties (79.5% of BSA rejection rate, 15.7% of irreversible fouling rate when filtering 0.5 g/L BSA solution, 97.2% of E. coli and 96.3% of S. aureus antibacterial rate), while maintaining a high pure water permeability of 1105.4 L . m −2. h −1. bar −1 . QGO nanosheets were stably coated on the membrane surface, and the QGO/PDA-PVDF membrane prepared by this novel strategy also demonstrated application potential in the field of seawater desalination pretreatment . Besides, the possible mechanisms during modifications were also discussed. This research could serve as a reference for improving the comprehensive performance of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane through surface coating.

The coupling effect of piezo-photocatalytic technology is well demonstrated as a promising strategy for effective degradation of organic pollutants. However, the catalytic efficiency is dramatically limited by the undesirable neutralization of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Herein, PVDF@Bi 2 MoO 6 /BiOBr heterojunction was designed elaborately to boosting their piezo-photocatalytic activity by built-in polarization field and controlled carrier transfer. The composite film presents excellent degradation performance of methyl orange (MO, 15 mg/L) (98.99%, 120 min) under the simultaneous ultrasonic vibration and visible light irradiation, which is around 2 and 3.1 times than that of individual piezoelectric and photocatalytic process. The improved piezo-photocatalytic capability could be attributed to the enhanced built-in piezoelectric field that generated by the vibration of p-type BiOBr nanosheets . The construction of piezoelectric polarization reduces the recombination efficiency of photogenerated carriers at the p-n heterojunction interface, thereby dramatically improving the catalytic efficiency. This work proposes and demonstrates the very positive role of dual piezoelectricity in modulating the photocatalytic efficiency in semiconductors, which provides a new paradigm for the further development of highly-efficient piezo-photocatalysts to be applied in environmental purification and wastewater treatment.

Porous triboelectric polymer materials are widely used in portable sensors due to their lightweight and suitable mechanical performance, but their triboelectric properties need to be improved. Here, we propose a two-step strategy to concave the cell and cell-packing structure of triboelectric materials based on porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The first step is to prepare triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) of PVDF with a concave cell-packing structure via oriented phase inversion. The second step is to concave the cells by radial and axial compression. The results reveal that the concavities in the cell structure at the radial direction and in the cell-packing structure at the axial direction improve the output signals of the porous PVDF TENG by ca. 150 and 110%, respectively. By contrast, the concaving in cell structure at the radial direction exerts a positive effect on triboelectric performance only when the radial compression strain is not bigger than 17.5%, especially when the cell wall is thin (ca. 0.85 μm). Meanwhile, the concavity-based strategy eliminates the irreversible deformation behavior of the porous PVDF material, enhancing its elasticity. The stability test shows that the sensor based on those materials is stable under 12,500 cycles, and the variance in the square derivation of output voltage is less than 1% during the cycle friction. Such stable and triboelectric-improved materials are assembled into sports-monitoring devices, providing an idea for the application of TENG in smart sensing.

Inorganic lead halide perovskite has become an emerging material for modern photoelectric and electronic nanodevices due to its excellent optical and electronic properties. In view of its huge dielectric and electrical properties, inorganic CsPbBr 3 perovskite is introduced into the piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG). Based on one-step electrospinning of solutions containing CsPbBr 3 precursors and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), in situ growth of CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals in PVDF fibers (CsPbBr 3 @PVDF composite fibers) with highly uniform size and spatial distribution are synthesized. The CsPbBr 3 @PVDF composite fibers based PENG reveals an open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 103 V and a density of short-circuit current ( I sc ) of 170 µ A cm −2 , where the V oc is comparable to the state-of-the-art hybrid composite piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and the density of I sc is 4.86 times higher than that of lead halide perovskites counterpart ever reported. Moreover, CsPbBr 3 @PVDF composite fibers based PENG exhibits fundamentally improved thermal/water/acid–base stabilities. This study suggests that the CsPbBr 3 @PVDF composite fiber is a good candidate for fabricating high-performance PENGs, promising application potentials in mechanical energy harvesting and motion sensing technologies.

Owing to the large dielectric constant, ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has emerged as an ideal potential component for dielectric capacitors with high energy density ( U e ). However, the intrinsic polarity of PVDF induces a large hysteresis loss, which dramatically reduces the discharged efficiency ( η ) and thus hinders its practical application. Herein, we demonstrate a simple modified polymer blending approach to enhance the η and meanwhile U e of PVDF through the employment of nonpolar polypropylene (PP). Despite the poor miscible nature of PVDF and PP, we realized the homogenous dispersion of PP within PVDF and their good interaction using a nonequilibrium manufacturing process. A minor addition of PP (< 15 wt%) demonstrated to be effective in depressing the hysteresis loss without degrading the polarization of PVDF, inducing superior η and U e . By further constructing a sandwich-structured for PP/PVDF blend composites, η and U e can be maximized to be 8.1 J/cm 3 and 75%, respectively.

A new multifunctional KGM/PDA/PVDF composite membrane was successfully prepared via facile nonsolvent induced phase inversion method. Here, the KGM component consisted of numerous covalent bonds, which could improve the corrosion resistance of membrane materials. The dopamine, as a natural “glue” between PVDF substantial and KGM, is capable of integrating different materials together suitably. The as-prepared membrane possessed superior superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic property, great corrosion resistance and antifouling property. The separation efficiency was as high as 99.01%, and could stay relatively stable even in the acid, alkali or high salty environment. Additionally, the membrane had great regeneration performance and could keep stable after 15 cyclic separation, which was appropriate for efficient various oil–water separation process. Moreover, the composite membrane could also effectively separate dyes in different environments and the efficiencies were all more than 91%. All in all, the multifunctional composite membrane with facile preparation method might provide a promising strategy and significant theoretical basis for the efficient separation of oil–water emulsions and dyes.

Plasmonic surface of flexible multilayered nanofibers possesses special superiority for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing of molecules and microbial cells. However, the fabrication of flexible plasmonic nanofibers with high sensitivity and reproducibility is difficult. Herein, we report a smart strategy for fabricating flexible plasmonic fibers, in which compact and homogeneous gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are in-situ grown on the high-curvature surface of multilayered fibers of electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Firstly, the surface of PVDF fibers is changed electrically, and Au seeds are deposited on the surface of PVDF fibers using electrostatic driving force. Secondly, a stable AuI 4 − complex is formed employing coordination between I − and AuCl 4 − ions, which could decrease the reduction potential of AuCl 4 − and restrain the self-nucleation, and then the reduction reaction of AuI 4 − is initiated by introducing PVDF@Au seeds to pull down the barrier of potential energy. Finally, in-situ growth of AuNPs is generated on the high-curvature surface of PVDF nanofibers, and large-scale hotspots are generated by adjacent AuNPs coupling in the three-dimensional (3D) space of multilayered fibers. Membrane of PVDF@Au nanofibers also realizes the sensitive detection of thiram molecules (low limit of detection of 0.1 nM) and good reproducibility (relative standard deviation of 10.6%). Meanwhile, due to the multilayered construction of PVDF@Au nanofibers, a valid SERS signal on 3D surface of bacteria could be generated. 3D distribution of hotspots on multilayered PVDF@Au nanofibers gives a clear advantage for SERS sensing of organic molecules and microbial cells.

Although a great deal of superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membranes has been developing for oil-water emulsion separation, most of them could be destroyed or lose their underwater superoleophobicity after exposure to complex conditions. In this study, a crosslinking modified PVDF/GO membrane with acid, alkali and high salt resistance was successfully prepared by a simple crosslinking process between acrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). The influences of content of acrylic acid on the membrane performance and structure evolution were investigated. The resultant composite membrane showed superior underwater superoleophobicity even in acid, alkali and salt environments. Additionally, the composite membrane could effectively separate various surfactant-stabilize emulsions under gravity-driven via wettability capillary effect with high rejection (>99%) and flux (>145 L m −2 h −1 ). The composite membrane also exhibited outstanding recyclability because of the stable covalent bridged multiple networks structure. The antifouling performance, stability and impressive recyclability make the composite membrane a promising candidate for long-term oil-water emulsion treatment.

The gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with poly(acrylonitrile-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PAN-POSS/PVDF) blends as free-standing porous membrane and ionic liquid (IL) as absorption substance were successfully prepared. By tuning the content of PAN-POSS, the porosity and absorptivity of the blended membranes could be regulated. Due to the higher porosity and absorptivity, the ionic conductivity of GPEs with 15 wt% PAN-POSS reaches to 1.91 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 20 o C. Meanwhile, the electrolytes also show excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and fire resistance. More importantly, the high electrochemical window of 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li + ) has been acquired and the testing cells with Li metal anode and LiFePO 4 cathode show a tolerable rate performance. Such prepared GPEs are expected to be applied to lithium batteries with high safety and electrochemical performance.
