Synergistic effects of Pr doping on oxygen vacancies and metal dispersion in Ru/CeO2 catalysts for enhanced ethylene methoxycarbonylation activity

Jiabing Chen,Xiaowei Zhu,Mengheng Wang,Xingmao Jiang,Xiaojun Lu

The reaction rate of alkoxycarbonylation is typically lower when using heterogeneous catalysts compared to homogeneous catalysis, primarily due to the reduced ability of the active sites to activate the reactants. To address the insufficient activation of reactants on the Ru/CeO 2 catalyst for ethylene methoxycarbonylation, this study investigates the doping of CeO 2 with Pr 3+ ions. By substituting Ce 4+ with Pr 3+ in the CeO 2 , richer oxygen vacancies are generated, which enhance the activation of CH 3 OH. This doping significantly increases the reaction rate of ethylene methoxycarbonylation to methyl propionate (MP), achieving a rate of 86.1 g·g Ru -1 ·h −1 while maintaining a selectivity of over 99 %. Notably, Pr doping also induces the formation of Ru-O-Ce species in the catalyst, which hinders the reduction of Ru species. However, this hindered reduction is counterbalanced by the enhanced dispersion of Ru species, as Pr doping promotes the formation of smaller Ru nanoparticles. Thus, an optimal level of Pr doping exerts a synergistic effect by positively influencing both the CeO 2 support and the Ru metal, thereby improving their respective abilities to activate the reactants and enhancing the overall performance in the ethylene methoxycarbonylation reaction to produce MP.

Regulating the atomic ratio of Pt/Ru to enhance CO anti-poisoning of Pt based electrocatalysts toward methanol oxidation reaction

Kaili Wang,Tingting Zhou,Jia He,Zhen Cao,Zaiyong Jiang

Pt based electrocatalysts are considered as very promising for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Especially, the PtRu alloy catalysts has attracted more and more attentions. However, the catalytic efficiency of PtRu electrocatalyst is seriously hampered originated from the poisoning effect of CO* intermediate during MOR process. Herein, we have regulated the Pt/Ru atom ratio and controlled the morphology to optimize electronic structures of the alloy for achieving excellent MOR performance. The obtained Pt 2 Ru 1 alloy nanowires display the most negative peak potential of CO oxidation in contrast to commercial Pt/C, PtRu/C catalysts, Pt 3 Ru 1 and Pt 1 Ru 1 alloy nanowires, indicating an excellent anti CO poisoning activity. In addition, the adsorption capacity of OH* on Pt 2 Ru 1 alloy nanowires is obviously improved compared to commercial Pt/C and PtRu/C electrocatalysts, which is in favor of the oxidizing of CO* intermediate. Therefore, the Pt 2 Ru 1 alloy nanowires exhibit significantly enhanced specific activity (2.30 mA cm −2 ) and mass activity (1.29 A mg Pt −1 ) towards MOR compared to those of commercial Pt/C and PtRu/C electrocatalysts. The research offers a potential insight for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for MOR.

Solid-state Ru(bpy)32+ electrochemiluminescence sensor for trace detection of fenpropathrin using loofah sponge-like carbon nanofibers and CdS

Lu Juan,Li Chao,Guo Yanjia,Feng Yongjia,Song Yujia,Li Ruidan,Tian Li,Wang Jing

Loofah sponge-like carbon nanofibers (LF-Co,N/CNFs) were utilized as a carrier for Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , and then combined with CdS to create a novel solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor capable of detecting trace amounts of fenpropathrin. LF-Co,N/CNFs, obtained through the high-temperature pyrolysis of ZIF-67 coaxial electrospinning fibers, were characterized by a loofah-like morphology and exhibited a significant specific surface area and porosity. Apart from serving as a carrier, LF-Co,N/CNFs also functioned as a luminescence accelerator, enhancing the system's luminescence efficiency by facilitating electron transmission and reducing the transmission distance. The inclusion of CdS in the luminescence reaction, in conjunction with Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , further boosted the sensor's luminescence signal. The resulting sensor demonstrated a satisfactory signal, with fenpropathrin causing significant quenching of the ECL signal. Under optimized conditions, a linear relationship between the signal quench value and fenpropathrin concentration in the range 1 × 10 –12 to 1 × 10 –6  M was observed, with a detection limit of 3.3 × 10 –13  M (S/N = 3). This developed sensor is characterized by its simplicity, sensitivity, and successful application in detecting fenpropathrin in real samples. The study not only presents a straightforward detection platform for fenpropathrin but also introduces new avenues for the rapid determination of various food contaminants, thereby expanding the utility of carbon fibers in electrochemiluminescence sensors. Asymmetric electronic structure at the interface Ni-P-Ru bridge inducing dual active sites for electrocatalytic urea-assisted water splitting

Shuting Zhang,Mingyang Liu,Jianan Liu,Zhangxin Xu,Qianxi Liu,Ruihong Wang,Huiyuan Meng,Baojiang Jiang

It is an efficient strategy to introduce dual active sites into alkaline urea-assisted water electrolysis systems by interfacial coupling, but it still poses certain challenges. In this study, Ni 2 P-RuP 2 /C with hollow sphere structure is designed and synthesized by using solvothermal, ion exchange and one-step phosphating strategy. Studies utilizing density functional theory (DFT) and Synchrotron radiation show that Ni-P-Ru bridge in Ni 2 P-RuP 2 /C acts as an electron transport pathway that promotes localized charge redistribution, causing electrons to flow from Ni 2 P/C to RuP 2 /C, optimizing the d-band center and reducing the reaction barrier of HER and UOR. It is determined that the electron-rich Ru sites favor proton adsorption and the electron-deficient Ni sites favor the adsorption of urea molecules and the release of CO 2 which become the true active sites of HER and UOR, respectively. The optimized Ni 2 P-RuP 2 /C need merely 13 mV and 1.314 V to attain 10 mA cm −2 for HER and UOR, respectively. This study provides a reliable pathway for green hydrogen production through the construction of Ni-P-Ru bridge.

Metal–organic nanostructures based on sono/chemo-nanodynamic synergy of TixOy/Ru reaction units: for ultrasound-induced dynamic cancer therapy

Jiang Tao,Tang Zixiang,Tian Shumiao,Tang Haitian,Jia Zhekun,Li Fangjian,Qiu Chenyue,Deng Lin,Ke Lang,He Pan,Liu Gang,Chu Chengchao,Xiong Yongfu

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) exhibits clinical potential for deep-tissue tumor treatment due to its deep tissue penetration and spatiotemporal controllability. Its core mechanism relies on ultrasound-activated sonosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby inducing tumor cell apoptosis. However, conventional sonosensitizers face limitations in ROS yield and tumor-targeting efficiency. In this study, we innovatively designed a multifunctional metal–organic nanosheet (TiZrRu-MON) by hydrothermal coordination of [Ru(bpy)₃] 2 ⁺ photosensitizing units with TiZr-O clusters, while incorporating Fe 3 ⁺ to construct a cascade catalytic system. Experimental results demonstrated that: (1) Fe 3 ⁺ lattice doping significantly enhanced charge carrier mobility and ultrasound-triggered 1 O₂ quantum yield via the formation charge transfer channels; (2) The acidic tumor microenvironment activated Fe 3 ⁺-mediated Fenton reactions, establishing a positive feedback loop with SDT to synergistically amplify ROS generation; (3) Hyaluronic acid functionalization improved nanosheet internalization in HepG2 tumor cells through CD44 receptor-mediated endocytosis. Remarkably, ultrasound irradiation induced substantial oxidative stress and immunogenic cell death, promoting the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which elevated the maturation rate of tumor-infiltrating dendritic cells (DCs) and significantly increased the proportion of CD8⁺ T cells. In a mouse subcutaneous tumor model, the system achieved effective tumor suppression with manageable systemic toxicity. This work proposes a metal–ligand coordination strategy to advance the development of high-performance sonosensitizers and immunomodulatory antitumor technologies. Graphical

Jirong Long,Yuxuan Mao,Yiwei Long,Guozhang Chang,Lungang Chen,Wenguang Zhou,Jinxing Long,Yong Liu

Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols into high-value cycloalkanes under mild conditions is challenging. Herein, we report a Ru NPs @HZSM-5 catalyst with a unique metal-support interactions that achieves 100 % guaiacol conversion and 99.7 % cyclohexane selectivity at 160 °C and 1 MPa H 2 . Comparative studies with single-atom and aggregated Ru catalysts reveal that well-dispersed Ru nanoparticles coupled with acid sites offer superior activity and selectivity. Kinetic analysis and in situ DRIFTS demonstrate a sequential mechanism involving rapid hydrogenation of the aromatic ring followed by rate-limiting deoxygenation steps. Characterizations and CO-DRIFTS confirm particle sizes, optimal metal-support interactions, and enhanced acidity in Ru NPs @HZSM-5. Theoretical calculations further reveal favorable electronic states and lower energy barriers for deoxygenation on Ru NPs @HZSM-5. The catalyst also shows broad substrate compatibility, efficiently converting various lignin-derived phenolics. This work provides valuable insights into the critical synergy between metal nanoparticles and acidic supports for efficient lignin upgrading.

Re-Ru-Fe multi-metal sites drives the strong binding-detoxification effect of OH- to optimize the alkaline HER kinetics

Jie Liu,Xinru Wei,Shan Lu,Ningyuan Song,Yanru Liu,Shu Yang,Fangxu Dai,Yunmei Du,Lei Wang

How to skillfully enhance the OH - binding energy of the hydrophilic site to accelerate water decomposition and avoid OH - poisoning is a huge challenge for achieving efficient alkaline HER kinetics. Therefore, the Ru-Fe 2 P/Re 3 P 4 model was designed from the perspective of coordinating the binding energy and spillover path of OH - . Density functional theory (DFT) disclosed that Re and Ru atoms act as hydrophilic sites and hydrogen evolution sites, respectively, to synergistically promote alkaline HER. In addition, the Ru dopant reduced the water dissociation energy barrier by enhancing the OH - binding energy of the Re hydrophilic sites. Meanwhile, Fe atoms with stronger OH - binding energy exhibited the OH - detoxification effect by promoting the OH - dynamic spillover from the Re sites. Given these, a unique Ru-ReFeP/IF-Q electrode was prepared by the ‘vapor phase phosphorization-quenching Ru doping’ strategy. As anticipated, the Ru-ReFeP/IF-Q electrode, driven by the Re-Ru-Fe alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism, only requires an overpotential of 172 mV at the industrial-level current density of 1 A cm −2 . The reinforced signal peaks attributed to Ru-H and Fe-OH species in the in-situ Raman spectra confirmed the detoxifying effect of Fe sites in avoiding OH - poisoning at hydrophilic active sites. In summary, this work provides a novel design idea for accelerating alkaline HER kinetics from the perspective of synergistically optimizing the binding energy and spillover path of OH - byproducts.

Efficient Hydrogen Production from Ammonia Using Ru Nanoparticles on Ce-Based Metal–Organic Framework (MOF)-Derived CeO2 with Oxygen Vacancies

Wenying Wu,Wenhao Yao,Yitong Liu,Senliang Xi,Teng Zhang

Ammonia is a promising hydrogen storage material because it is easy to store and decompose into COX-free hydrogen. A Ru-based catalyst exhibits good catalytic performance in ammonia decomposition, and enhancing the interaction between the Ru atoms and the support is an important way to further improve its catalytic activity. In this study, CeO2was prepared by calcination using a cerium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) as the precursor, and the number of oxygen vacancies on the surface of CeO2was regulated by hydrogen reduction. The XPS and Raman results showed that abundant oxygen vacancies were formed on the surface of these CeO2, and their number increased with an increase in the reduction time. The Ru/CeO2-4 h catalyst, using CeO2reduced for 4 h as the support, exhibited good catalytic activity in ammonia decomposition, reaching 98.9% ammonia conversion and 39.74 mmol gcat−1min−1hydrogen yield under the condition of GHSV = 36,000 mL gcat−1h−1at 500 °C. The XAFS results demonstrated that Ru was stably anchored with oxygen vacancies on the surface of CeO2via Ru-O-Ce bonds. Density functional theory calculations further showed that these bondings lower the reaction energy barrier for N-H bond cleavage, thereby significantly enhancing the catalytic activity.

Gold-graphdiyne linked [Ru(NH3)6]3+-UiO-66-NH2 with peptide for sensitive electrochemical detection of matrix metalloproteinase-7

Chen Fei,Wang Xiang,Yan Lei,Lin Zhixiong,Zheng Weijun,Wu Dianming,Qiu Bin,Fang Yifan,Liu Mingkun

By preparing gold nanoparticles-graphdiyne (Au-GDY) as sensing substrate and [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ -UiO-66-NH 2 MOFs (Ru-UiO-66) as signaling probe as well as linking the as-prepared Au-GDY and Ru-UiO-66 with the specific peptide (PT) of MMP-7 to form Ru-UiO-66/PT/Au-GDY, a cost-effective and sensitive electrochemical sensor was designed for the detection of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) which is an important biomarker for tumor and biliary atresia. The superior electrical properties, easy preparation, large surface area, and high stability of Au-GDY make it be a desirable substrate to immobilize PT. The unique structure of UiO-66-NH 2 is beneficial to assemble [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ probe and link PT. In the absence of MMP-7, the Ru-UiO-66/PT/Au-GDY modified electrode exhibited a prominent peak current of [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ , which is decreased after the addition of target MMP-7 since it can specifically recognize and cleave PT to induce the Ru-UiO-66 leave the electrode. The experimental results showed that the decrease of the [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ signal has a linear relation with the concentrations of MMP-7 in the range 0.01 pg mL −1 –10.0 ng mL −1 . By optimizing experimental conditions, the achieved detection limit (LOD) for MMP-7 is 5.0 fg mL −1 . The analysis of real serum samples has excellent accuracy. The simplicity of preparation and sensitivity make the Ru-UiO-66/PT/Au-GDY sensor a considerable promising analysis tool for MMP-7 detection. Graphical abstract

Trace Ru-doped Fe@Ni metal aerogel with core-shell structure as an efficient catalysts for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

Juan Huang,Xiaomin Lang,Mochou Zhang,ZiTao Liu,Yongbin Yang,Jianrong Liu,Hua Lin

The high cost of precious metals limits their use as effective catalysts for water electrolysis, while non-precious metal catalysts are more affordable but often underperform. A promising strategy to improve electrocatalytic performance and reduec costs is to incorporate noble metals onto non-precious substrates. This study successfully synthesized a trace Ru-doped FeNi 2 Ru 0.01 metal aerogel catalyst utilizing a one-step reduction method, resulting in a distinctive core-shell structure. The aerogel exhibits an overpotential of only 228 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 and a stable operation time of up to 70 hours. Analysis reveals that the high specific surface area and porous architecture of the FeNi 2 Ru 0.01 aerogel facilitate the dispersion and exposure of trace Ru. In this configuration, Ru can serve as an active site following oxidation and aid in transforming Ni into the active species NiOOH, significantly boosting OER activity. This research provides a novel approach to optimizing metal aerogel catalysts through precious metal doping and lays a strong foundation for sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies.

A universal label-free fluorescent aptasensor based on Ru complex and quantum dots for adenosine, dopamine and 17β-estradiol detection

Hailiang Huang,Shuo Shi,Xing Gao,Ruru Gao,Ying Zhu,Xuewen Wu,Ruimin Zang,Tianming Yao

Based on specific aptamer binding properties, a strategy for adenosine, dopamine and 17β-estradiol detection was realised by employing Ru complex and quantum dots (QDs) as fluorescence probes. Ru complex, which could quench the fluorescence of QDs, preferred to bind with aptamer DNA and resulted in the fluorescence rise of QDs. When the aptamer DNA was incubated with the target first, it could not bind with Ru complex and the fluorescence of QDs was quenched. Under the optimal condition, the fluorescence intensity was linearly proportional to the concentration of adenosine, dopamine and 17β-estradiol with a limit of detection (LOD) of 101   nM, 19   nM and 37   nM, respectively. The experiments in fetal bovine serum were also carried out with good results. This universal method was rapid, label-free, low-cost, easy-operating and highly repeatable for the detection of adenosine, dopamine and 17β-estradiol. Qualitative detection by naked eyes was also available without complex instruments. It could also be extended to detect various analytes, such as metal ions , proteins and small molecules by using appropriate aptamers.

High-Efficiency Production of Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol over a Ru/C Catalyst in Micropacked Bed Reactors: Reaction Optimization and Kinetic Studies

Lian Duan,Weiyao Yang,Hongda Zhang,Mengmeng Huang,Le Sang,Jisong Zhang

In this work, high-efficiency and continuous production of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) over a Ru/C catalyst was performed in micropacked bed reactors (μPBRs). The excellent reaction performance demonstrated by the combination of μPBRs and the Ru/C catalyst resulted in a 100% furfural (FUR) conversion and a 98.5% yield of THFA within 3.5 min at 25 °C. Subsequently, a kinetic model was developed to describe the continuous hydrogenation of FUR in μPBRs. Utilizing the established kinetic model, the concentrations of various substances were predicted at different residence times between 25 and 45 °C, with an error of less than ±25%. The apparent activation energies for the FUR conversion to furfuryl alcohol (FA) and for the subsequent hydrogenation of FA to THFA were found to be 18.9 and 30.6 kJ/mol, respectively. Furthermore, the space-time yield (STY) of the μPBR system reached 0.21 kgTHFA L–1 h–1, significantly surpassing stirred tank reactors (STRs). These results demonstrate the superior efficiency and productivity of the μPBR system, providing a scalable and sustainable solution for the THFA synthesis.
