In this work, a green reaction system of CO 2 -water-isopropanol was developed for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production. The conversion of fructose in a CO 2 -water system was first investigated, and the results showed this system could promote the formation of HMF compared to a pure water system. Then, isopropanol was introduced into the CO 2 -water system and the HMF formation became better because the solvent effect of isopropanol increased the tautomeric composition of fructofuranose, which was easy to form HMF. The existence of isopropanol was found to greatly suppress secondary reactions where HMF was converted to levulinic acid and insoluble humin. Meanwhile, the effects of reaction parameters on the conversion of fructose to HMF in the CO 2 -water-isopropanol system were analyzed, and a high HMF yield of 67.14% was obtained. Finally, to further illustrate the merits of CO 2 -water-isopropanol system, productions of HMF from other carbohydrates were tested and satisfactory yields were achieved. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 63: 257–265, 2017

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to valuable chemicals, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), is realized over a carbon supported nickel-cobalt catalyst with formic acid as hydrogen donor. The highest DMF yield, 90.0%, is achieved at 210 °C under self-generated pressure. A reaction route involving 5-methylfurfural (5-MF) instead of 2,5-bis(hydromethyl)furan (BHMF) as an intermediate has been investigated, which is different from that when H 2 is used as hydrogen source in previous reports. The influence of the amount of formic acid is investigated on the conversion of HMF and the yield of DMF. The effectiveness of this strategy has also been used for the conversion of furfural to 2-methylfuran, another valuable chemicals.

This paper reports a new ratiometric probe for the detection of adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) that is based on the binding-induced modulation of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) coupled with the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) sensing mechanism. The introduction of coumarin fluorophores as FRET donors into the side-chain of polythiophene (PT) as the FRET acceptor provides the ratiometric probe. Upon addition of ATP, the formation of a polymer/ATP complex leads to the conformational changes of the PT backbone from a random coil to the planar conformation and aggregation. As such, the ratiometric ATP detection can be achieved by taking advantage of spectral overlap changes to modulate the FRET efficiency from coumarin fluorophores to the PT backbone before and after the addition of ATP, coupled with ACQ. The probe exhibited a clear seesaw-type dual-emission signal change upon binding with strong affinity (Kapp = 3.12 × 104 M−1) to ATP in aqueous solution, whereas no obvious emission changes were observed with ADP, AMP or various other anions. The probe can also be utilized for naked-eye detection of ATP and real-time monitoring of the ATP hydrolysis reaction by apyrase under physiological pH conditions.

Carboxymethyl chitosan/poly (ethylene oxide) (CCTS/PEO) composite is firstly reported as a water soluble binder for the application of 5 V LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode in Li-ion batteries. Both CCTS and PEO show a high electrochemical oxidation potential of above 5.0 V (vs. Li/Li + ). The electrochemical performances of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathodes with CCTS/PEO composite binders of different mass rates are investigated, it is found that LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode with an optimized CCTS/PEO (85/15, w/w) composite exhibits a slightly better cycling performance than that of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), retaining 81.4% capacity as compared with 79.8% for PVDF at 0.5C rate after 200 cycles. LNMO with PEO/CCTS (85/15, w/w) exhibited the better rate capability than that of PVDF. These results demonstrate that CCTS/PEO composite can be potentially used as a water-soluble binder for 5 V LNMO cathode.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have shown superior performance in the conversion of biomass to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) as reaction medium and/or catalyst, which is a green platform compound with a wide range of applications in manufacturing fine chemicals and biofuels. Nevertheless, the separation of 5-HMF from ILs is very difficult and becomes a technical bottleneck for IL application in the preparation of 5-HMF. To resolve this problem, understanding the interactions between ILs and 5-HMF is essential. In this work, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, and quantum chemistry calculations were combined to investigate the interaction between 5-HMF and each of the eight ILs over the whole composition range. The studied ILs have the same 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation [C4mim]+ but different anions. It was found that interactions between the ILs and 5-HMF were mainly ascribed to the strong hydrogen bonds of 5-HMF with anions of the ILs, and the formation abilities of hydrogen bonds of the anions with O–H group of 5-HMF were found to decrease in the order [CH3COO]−, [C2H5COO]− > [HSO4]− > [CF3COO]− > [N(CN)2]− > [NO3]− > [CH3OSO3]− > [BF4]−. These results suggest that the anions with stronger hydrogen bond accepting ability have stronger interaction with 5-HMF and the separation of 5-HMF from the ILs is mainly governed by the hydrogen bonding interactions between anion of the ILs and 5-HMF. In addition, partition coefficients of 5-HMF between 1,4-dioxane and the ILs phases were determined experimentally to support the conclusion.

The efficient catalytic conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can provide a valuable reference for the high-value utilization of biomass. In this work, a series of simple phosphate-doped hafnium oxide catalysts (x-P-HfO 2 ) were prepared, and their physicochemical properties were analyzed by ICP-OES, XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM-EDX, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, NH 3 -TPD and Py-FTIR characterizes. Detailed evaluation of the reaction conditions demonstrated the ideal catalytic performance of the x-P-HfO 2 catalysts, and the HMF yield from cellulose reached a satisfactory 61% in the water (NaCl) /tetrahydrofuran biphasic reaction system. Based on the captured intermediates and detected by-products, possible catalytic pathways are summarized. Meanwhile, the hydrothermal stability of the catalyst was also investigated, and the reason for its performance degradation after five cycles was determined to be the loss of useful Brønsted active sites. In addition, the effects of the phosphating and sulfating modification approaches on the catalyst activity were also compared, verifying that the introduction of phosphate is more conducive to the catalyst expressing high activity for the formation of HMF from cellulose.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the most promising biomass-based chemicals that is used to produce many kinds of important compounds. Especially, the selective conversion of HMF to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), an important chemical feedstock, has high industrial significance but is technically challenging. In this study, we present a high-performance photocatalyst for selective oxidation of HMF to HMFCA. By integrating an ultrasmall amount of palladium (Pd) nanoclusters (1.12‰ in weight) on defective hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (Pd/defective h-BN nanosheets (dh-BNs)), outstanding photocatalytic performance can be achieved, resulting in up to a 95% HMF conversion ratio with an 82% HMFCA selectivity. The performance is considerably higher than that of pristine dh-BNs and Pd on defect-free h-BNs. More importantly, this Pd/dh-BNs catalyst maintains a high catalytic activity after eight cycles, demonstrating robust catalytic stability. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Pd/dh-BNs can lower the energy barrier for HMF oxidation and facilitate the desorption of HMFCA, which contributes to the high selectivity catalytic performance. This study not only introduces a promising photocatalyst for sustainable chemical transformations but can also provide valuable insights into the design of advanced photocatalytic material for biorefinery applications.

The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens presents a clinical challenge in infection treatment, prompting the repurposing of existing drugs as an essential strategy to address this crisis. Although the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has been recognized for its antibacterial properties, its mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we found that the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 5-FU againstEscherichia coliwas 32–64 µg/mL, including strains carryingblaNDM-5, which confers resistance to carbapenems. We further elucidated the antibacterial mechanism of 5-FU againstE. coliby using genetic and biochemical analyses. We revealed that the mutation of uracil phosphoribosyltransferase-encoding geneuppincreased the MIC of 5-FU againstE. coliby 32-fold, indicating the role of theuppgene in 5-FU resistance. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis ofE. colitreated with 5-FU at 8 µg/mL and 32 µg/mL identified 602 and 1082 differentially expressed genes involved in carbon and nucleic acid metabolism, DNA replication, and repair pathways. The biochemical assays showed that 5-FU induced bacterial DNA damage, significantly increased intracellular ATP levels and the NAD+/NADH ratio, and promoted reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. These findings suggested that 5-FU may exert antibacterial effects onE. colithrough multiple pathways, laying the groundwork for its further development as a therapeutic candidate against carbapenem-resistant bacterial infections.

Na- and Mn-promoted Co 2 C-based catalysts have demonstrated promise for the one-step conversion of syngas to olefins via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to olefins (FTO). However, their consistently low activity limits their industrial applications. Here, we designed a compound catalyst comprising a CoMn composite catalyst and ZSM-5 zeolite, achieving 4.9 times the activity compared to the sole Co 2 C catalyst without compromising olefin selectivity. CO– and H 2 -TPD studies, in-situ DRIFT experiment, and DFT calculation revealed that the surface acidity of ZSM-5 modulated the strong electron effect of Na, subsequently strengthening H 2 adsorption on the Co 2 C catalyst surface. The H-assisted CO dissociation was therefore promoted and the catalyst activity was boosted. Meanwhile, Co 2 C as active site was unaffected, maintaining high selectivity to olefins. Constructing an interface between Co 2 C and ZSM-5 in the compound catalyst is proven to be a successful strategy for enhancing the activity of Co 2 C-based catalysts for FTO.

As a type of sustainable and renewable natural source, biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) can be converted into high-value chemicals. This study investigated the interactions between silver (Ag) and oxide supports with varied reducibility and their contributions to tuning catalytic performance in the selective oxidation of HMF. Three representatives of manganese dioxide (MnO2), zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), and silicon dioxide (SiO2) were selected to support the Ag active sites. The catalysts were characterized by techniques such as STEM (TEM), Raman, XPS, H2-TPR, and FT-IR spectroscopy to explore the morphology, Ag dispersion, surface properties, and electronic states. The catalytic results demonstrated that MnO2with the highest reducibility exhibited superior catalytic performance, achieving 75.4% of HMF conversion and 41.6% of selectivity for 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) at 120 °C. In contrast, ZrO2and SiO2exhibited limited oxidation capabilities, mainly producing intermediate products like FFCA and/or HMFCA. The oxidation ability of these catalysts was governed by support reducibility, because it determined the density of oxygen vacancies (Ov) and surface hydroxyl groups (OOH), and eventually influenced the catalytic activity, as demonstrated by the reaction rate: Ag/MnO2(3214.5 molHMF·gAg−1·h−1), Ag/ZrO2(2062.3 molHMF·gAg−1·h−1), and Ag/SiO2(1394.4 molHMF·gAg−1·h−1). These findings provide valuable insights into the rational design of high-performance catalysts for biomass-derived chemical conversion.

Graphical Taking the cross : Morphologically cross-shaped HZSM-5 loaded Ru nanoparticles demonstrate high activity (rate: 7.8 g g −1 h −1 ) in the selective hydrogenolysis of guaiacol to benzene in water with a nearly quantitative yield accompanied with high durability. Hydrogenolysis of C−O bonds is an important tool for synthesis of valuable fuels and chemicals from biomass. In this contribution, we report that morphologically cross-shaped HZSM-5-loaded Ru nanoparticles have demonstrated high activity in the selective hydrogenolysis of guaiacol to benzene in water with 97 % yield and a rate of 7.8 g g −1 h −1 accompanied with high durability. N 2 sorption analysis showed that Ru/HZSM-5 (cross-shaped) had a large mesoporous surface area and pore volume for loading small and uniform Ru nanoparticles, as confirmed by TEM images. The stronger interaction of Ru and cross-shaped HZSM-5 was simultaneously confirmed by a higher hydrogen reduction temperature of RuO 2 on calcined Ru/HZSM-5, a blueshift of Ru δ+ -(CO) n , Ru δ+ -(CO), and Ru 0 -(CO) species in the IR spectra of adsorbed CO, and a higher Ru 3d 5/2 binding energy in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The reaction constant in guaiacol hydrogenolysis to phenol over cross-shaped Ru/HZSM-5 (0.051 min −1 ) was 3–4 times higher than that on spherical and cuboid Ru/HZSM-5 (0.012–0.029 min −1 ) at identical conditions, attributed to the remarkable hydrogenolysis catalytic capability of Ru nanoparticles on cross-shaped HZSM-5. In addition, adsorption of guaiacol and hydrogen was more substantial on cross-shaped Ru/HZSM-5, as evidenced by of IR and mass spectroscopy, respectively. The higher adsorption of guaiacol is attributed to the abundant Lewis acid sites on cross-shaped Ru/HZSM-5, as the Al−OH enriched Lewis acid sites favor the adsorption of oxygen-containing guaiacol. The higher rate constant in the primary step, together with the adsorbed high concentrated reactant and hydrogen (with nearly first-order reaction kinetics) on cross-shaped Ru/HZSM-5, facilitates the overall tandem reaction, leading to an excellent hydrogenolysis catalyst working at hydrothermal conditions for biomass conversion.

FePO4 catalysts with branch-like, flower-like, and spherical morphologies were synthesized for the conversion of methyl cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) via a hydrothermal route. The molar ratio of Fe3+ and H2PO4− ions in the reaction system played a crucial role in the morphology of FePO4. Compared with flower-like, spherical and amorphous FePO4, branch-like FePO4 presented a better catalytic performance in the cellulose conversion and 5-HMF yield. The branch-like FePO4 retained a branch structure after recycling five times in the bi-phasic reaction process. The insolubility of low temperature and partial dissolution of elevated temperature were responsible for the excellent catalytic activity of the FePO4 phase-change catalyst. The combined effect of H+ ions and iron species generated from the hydrolysis of FePO4 can be favorable for the enhanced yield of 5-HMF.
