As a food and environmental contaminant having harmful qualities like neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity, acrylamide (AA) is a risk to human health. In this study, Ce-MOF@AuPd NFs were utilized as electrode modification materials to develop a signal-off electrochemical aptasensor in combination with Mg 2 + -dependent DNAzyme-driven 3D DNA walker and triplex molecular switch (THMS) for the sensitive detection of AA. Ce-MOF@AuPd NFs exhibit an expansive surface area and enhanced conductive properties, enabling the binding of substantial DNA sequences and speeding up electron transfer. The Mg 2+ -dependent DNAzyme-driven 3D DNA walker improves the nucleic acid shearing efficiency with excellent signal amplification performance, and combines with the DNA-specific structure THMS to further boost sensor sensitivity. The sensor also demonstrated excellent specificity, reproducibility, repeatability, and stability, along with achieving satisfactory recovery rates when tested on potato chips and coffee samples. The electrochemical aptasensor offers strong application prospects for AA detection in food, according to the results.

High-entropy pyrochlore ceramics with the nominal composition Eu 2 B 2 O 7 , incorporating up to five equiatomic B-site cations, were synthesized via a solid-state reaction method and evaluated their aqueous chemical durability for nuclear waste immobilization. Comprehensive characterization using XRD, Raman, and SEM analyses confirmed the formation of a single-phase pyrochlore structure with uniform and random elemental distribution. However, secondary phases were observed in the Ce- and Nb-doped samples, which is attributed to the larger ionic radius of Ce and the higher valence state of Nb. The 42 days leaching tests revealed normalized element release rates ranging from 10 −5 to 10 −7 g/(m 2 ∙d), significantly lower than those of conventional pyrochlore materials. This enhanced durability is attributed to synergistic effects of electronegativity, ionic radius, and atomic number, which together hinder cation diffusion and strengthen chemical durability at the B site. These findings demonstrate the potential of Eu 2 B 2 O 7 high-entropy pyrochlore ceramics as long-term host materials for high-level radioactive waste. This study provides a valuable resource for enriching the thermophysical properties database of B-site high-entropy pyrochlore solidification, thereby supporting their engineering development.

In this study, the electroactive Ni 3 S 2 /Ce 2 S 3 heterostructure (denoted as Ce–Ni(OH) 2 –S) was achieved by a facile one-step hydrothermal approach through the incorporation of Ce and sulfur into Ni(OH) 2 . The effect of Ni 3 S 2 /Ce 2 S 3 heterostructure on electrocatalytic water splitting is investigated in detail in 1.0 M KOH. The as-prepared Ce–Ni(OH) 2 –S exhibits long-term stability and excellent catalytic activity at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 with overpotentials of 327 mV and 356 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Serving as bifunctional catalysts, the Ce–Ni(OH) 2 –S electrode merely requires a 1.519 V cell voltage to reach 10 mA cm −2 . The synergistic effect of the metal sulfide heterojunction (composed of Ce and Ni) effectively facilitates reactant transfer and electron migration, thereby significantly enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the catalytic performance is further enhanced with the overpotentials of 312 and 284 mV for OER and HER, respectively, by applying visible light irradiation. This work offers a new strategy for improving the electrocatalytic performance of water splitting under visible light irradiation condition.

Perovskite oxides are promising anodic electrocatalysts for alkaline saline water electrolysis, yet their performance is often limited by sluggish oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and competing chloride corrosion. Building on Pr0.1Sr0.9Co0.5Fe0.5O3 (PSCF), a candidate previously identified via our transfer learning paradigm, we further leveraged data-driven compositional searching of the A-site configuration, which led to an optimized catalyst with a proper Ce/Sr/Pr ratio (Ce-PSCF). The asymmetric Ce–O–Co motifs invoked a negative charge-transfer regime and activated the evolution of nonbonding oxygen (ONB) states, which reconciled the activity-stability trade-off and promoted a dual-site intramolecular lattice oxygen mechanism, as evidenced by promoted 18O–18O evolution. The electrolyzer with Ce-PSCF lowered the overpotential of the PSCF-based one by 100 mV at 300 mA cm–2 and exhibited 15-fold greater durability. Electrochemical analysis revealed a higher reaction order, promoted *OH coverage, and faster surface reconstruction on the Ce-incorporated electrocatalyst, indicating *OH-controlled chemical-step kinetics. Theoretical insight inferred a variation of the rate-determining step from O–O coupling to secondary OH– refilling with a reduced energy barrier from 0.68 to 0.54 eV. Moreover, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations visualized a dynamically strengthened affinity for OH– and significant repulsion of Cl–, arising from its intrinsic Lewis acidic and basic microenvironment.

Ni–M/SiO2 with different binary metals M (M = Ce, Co, Sn, Fe) prepared by an incipient impregnation method was used in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of low-temperature coal tar distillate, which is rich in phenolic compounds. p-Cresol, as a model compound of the distillate, was used to evaluate the activity and selectivity of BTX products on the series of reduced Ni–M/SiO2 catalysts in a fixed bed reactor. The properties of the catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, ICP-AES, XRD, H2-TPR, and XPS. Benzene and toluene as the direct deoxygenation (DDO) products and cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane as the hydrogenolysis (HYD) products were detected to evaluate the selectivity of the path in the deoxygenation process. In this series of catalysts, the order of reactivity was Ni–Ce > Ni–Sn > Ni–Co > Ni–Fe > monometallic Ni. Meanwhile, the addition of Ce and Co loaded in the Lewis acid sites of the catalyst affected the electron distribution of nickel atom and its atomic arrangement on the surface of the carrier. Compared to monometallic Ni, the DDO path become dominant on Ni–Ce and Ni–Co and the selectivity for BTX products increased from 58.8% to 77.4% and 71.1%, respectively. The binary metal Sn, unlike the former two metals, formed a Ni3Sn crystal form with Ni, which resulted in significant enhancement of the HYD path while obviously increasing the reactivity.

CuO-based and MnO x -based sorbents modified with Ce and La using sol-gel method, were employed for elemental mercury removal at 120–240 °C. The Hg 0 removal activity of Mn 2 O 3 /ZSM-5 can be significantly enhanced by doping 50 at.% Ce or 10 at.% La, the Hg 0 removal efficiency increased by 94% and 71%, respectively. The Hg 0 removal ability of CuO/ZSM-5 subtly improved by addition of 50 at.% Ce or 10 at.% La, the Hg 0 removal efficiency ascended only by 6% and 18%, respectively. The XPS results revealed that Hg 0 transformed to HgO, and CuO (or Mn 2 O 3 ) was reduced to Cu 2 O (or Mn 3 O 4 ), which is in agreement with Mars-Maessen mechanism.

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a promising route for the simultaneous utilization of CH 4 and CO 2 to produce syngas, yet the development of efficient and stable catalysts for low-temperature DRM remains highly challenging. In this work, a series of Co/CeO 2 catalysts with morphology-controlled ceria supports were prepared to investigate the structure–performance relationship in DRM. Among them, the catalyst supported on CeO 2 nanorods (Co/CeO 2 -R) exhibited the best catalytic activity and stability at 600 °C. Structural characterization suggests that the CeO 2 -R support provides a higher surface area and defect density, which favors Co dispersion and the formation of Co-O-Ce interfacial structures. Raman, XPS, and H 2 -TPR results indicate that Co/CeO 2 -R possesses a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies and stronger interfacial interactions compared with other catalysts. CO 2 -TPD measurements further show enhanced CO 2 adsorption capacity, which is consistent with the increased density of defect sites. The results collectively suggest that the improved catalytic performance originates from the synergistic effect of Co dispersion, oxygen vacancies, and Co-O-Ce interfacial structures, which together promote CO 2 activation, oxygen transfer, and carbon removal. In situ DRIFTS results suggest a bifunctional reaction pathway, in which CH 4 activation is likely to occur on Co sites, while CO 2 is activated on defect-rich CeO 2 surfaces to form carbonate/formate species that may participate in carbon removal. Overall, this work establishes a structure-performance correlation between CeO 2 morphology and catalytic behavior, providing insights into the design of Co-based catalysts for low-temperature DRM.

Background Excess phosphorus in aquatic environments causes eutrophication. Low-valence inorganic and dissolved organic phosphorus are harder to remove than orthophosphate. These species usually require oxidation before separation, whereas oxidation alone cannot reduce total phosphorus (TP), resulting in multi-stage treatment processes. Methods This study explores a waste-derived cerium-modified CoFe 2 O 4 @biochar composite (ECB) prepared from crab shells for synchronous oxidation and adsorption of phosphorus species in water. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were conducted for material characterization. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and radical quenching tests were used to identify reactive oxygen species. Significant findings The ECB/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system removed 95.6% of P(III) within 30 min at neutral pH, reducing residual TP below 0.5 mg/L. PMS addition accelerated phosphorus removal by oxidizing P(III) to phosphate, which was captured by surface cerium-containing sites. The adsorption followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Mechanistic results showed CoFe 2 O 4 @biochar activated PMS to generate SO 4 •− as the main reactive species, and electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange were responsible for phosphate capture. The ECB/PMS system was effective for dissolved organic phosphonates and exhibited magnetic separability, reusability, and low metal leaching. This research presents an efficient one-step strategy for phosphorus control and recovery, supporting cleaner production and circular utilization of crab shell waste.

The integration of photocatalysis and thermal catalysis offers a sustainable route to drive the dry reforming of methane (DRM) at low temperatures, addressing the high energy consumption of traditional thermocatalytic processes. Herein, we systematically explore the effects of doping rare earth elements (Ce, Pr, and Y) on the photothermal catalytic activity and stability of Ni-based catalysts (Ni–MOx–Al2O3) for DRM. Results demonstrate that Ce doping significantly enhances charge carrier separation efficiency and reduces interfacial impedance, endowing Ni–Ce–Al with superior photocatalytic activity compared to Ni–Pr–Al and Ni–Y–Al catalysts. After 100 h of continuous reaction at 650 °C, the conversions of CH4 and CO2 only decrease from 59.0% and 62.0% to 52.6% and 56.8%, respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal that Ce incorporation increases the density of surface oxygen vacancies, which promotes the activation of CH4 and CO2 and enhances coke resistance under light conditions. Kinetic analysis confirms that Ni–Ce–Al possesses the lowest activation energies for CH4 (40.6 kJ mol−1) and CO2 (36.7 kJ mol−1) dissociation under illumination. This work provides helpful guidance for the design of high-performance Ni-based photothermal catalysts for DRM through rare earth modification, highlighting the crucial role of Ce in optimizing electronic properties and anti-coking ability.

Zn/Ce-MOF integrates fluorescence, oxidase-like and apparent hydrolase-like behavior. • Ratiometric sensing enables signal self-calibration. • Smartphone RGB signals reveal distinct response patterns for five OP standards. The widespread residue of highly toxic organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) poses a serious threat to food safety and human health, underscoring the need for sensitive screening methods. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor array was constructed based on a trifunctional Zn/Ce-MOF exhibiting intrinsic blue fluorescence, oxidase-like activity, and apparent phosphoester hydrolase-like behavior. LC–HRMS full-scan analysis further showed DDV signal depletion accompanied by a marked increase in a DMP-assigned signal after 90 min. Ce sites promoted o -phenylenediamine (OPD) oxidation to produce yellow-fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP), which attenuated the intrinsic fluorescence through the inner filter effect. Upon addition of OPs, the DAP-associated emission decreased while the intrinsic fluorescence of Zn/Ce-MOF recovered, resulting in a ratiometric response (F 565 /F 440 ). Meanwhile, the fluorescence variation enabled visible color changes and smartphone-assisted signal acquisition based on red, green, and blue (RGB) analysis. The proposed sensor exhibited two linear response regions toward DDV over the final concentration ranges of 0–5 and 5–30 μg/mL, with a detection limit of 0.043 μg/mL. The sensing platform was preliminarily evaluated through post-extraction matrix-spike experiments for DDV in tenfold-diluted tomato and spinach extracts, yielding post-extraction matrix-spike recoveries of 93.5–121.5%. Multivariate analysis of F 565 /F 440 , G/B, and R/G signals revealed characteristic distribution, separation, and clustering patterns for five OP standards, including dichlorvos (DDV), dimethoate (DM), chlorpyrifos (CPF), methyl parathion (MP), and trichlorfon (TCF), in standard solutions. The study therefore provides a Zn/Ce-MOF-based strategy for smartphone-assisted DDV screening in tenfold-diluted tomato and spinach extracts and multichannel response-pattern analysis of five OP standards under controlled conditions. Further studies will evaluate the applicability of the multichannel response patterns to multiple OPs in complex food matrices. (B) Proposed mechanism of Zn/Ce-MOF-mediated OP transformation and fluorescence regulation. (C) Integrated smartphone RGB acquisition and multivariate response-pattern analysis of OP standards. Sensitive detection ofEscherichia coliO157:H7 (E. coliO157:H7) in food matrices remains an important analytical challenge. Here, a colorimetric biosensor was constructed based on a bimetal oxide nanozyme composed of Ce-Fe oxide. This biosensor achieved sensitive detection ofE. coliO157:H7. The Ce-Fe oxide synthesized on the basis of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) had the advantages of low solvent consumption and short preparation time. By regulating the two key factors of metal valence and oxygen vacancy content, the peroxidase (POD) activity of the nanozyme was significantly improved. Compared with the single-metal oxide nanozyme Fe oxide, the addition of Ce increased the Fe2+/Fe3+ratio from 0.37 to 0.49, implying a possible enhancement of electron transfer between Fe2+and Fe3+. The detection limits (LODs) of the biosensor based on Fe oxide and that based on Ce-Fe oxide were 102CFU/mL and 101CFU/mL, respectively, comparable to existing validated methods. Moreover, these two biosensors achieved satisfactory recovery rates (91–104%) and RSDs (1.2–8.8%) in the spiked lake water, juice, and lettuce samples ofE. coliO157:H7, indicating their high potential for application in spiked sample detection. In summary, the method proposed in this study for improving the POD activity of nanozymes through electron transfer in DES solutions is beneficial to the development of metal oxide nanozymes.

Series of unequal quantity Nd/Ce co-doped ceramic nuclear waste forms, (Gd, Nd) 2 (Zr, Ce) 2 O 7 , were prepared to tailor its ordered pyrochlore or disordered fluorite structure. The phase transition, microtopography, and elemental composition of the ceramic samples were systematically investigated, especially the effect of order-disorder structure on the chemical stability. It was confirmed that unequal quantity of Nd/Ce could synchronously replace the Gd/Zr-sites of Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . And the phase transition of order-disorder structure could be successfully tailored by regulating the average cationic radius ratio of (Gd, Nd) 2 (Zr, Ce) 2 O 7 series. The elements of Gd, Nd, Zr, and Ce are uniformly distributed in the ordered or disordered structures. The MCC-1 leaching results showed that (Gd, Nd) 2 (Zr, Ce) 2 O 7 pyrochlore ceramic nuclear waste forms had excellent chemical stability, whose elements' normalized leaching rates were as low as 10 −4 -10 −7 g‧m −2 ‧d −1 after 7 days. In particular, the chemical stability of disordered structure was superior to that of ordered structure. It was proposed that the force constant and the closest packing were changed with the structure transformation resulting the chemical stability difference.
