Dual-responsive dithio-polydopamine coated porous CeO2 nanorods for targeted and synergistic drug delivery

Ying Zhang,Xiaowen Wu,Chenxi Hou,Kun Shang,Kui Yang,Zhimin Tian,Zhichao Pei,Yongquan Qu,Yuxin Pei

Objective The aim was to produce the first report of assembling degradable stimuli-responsive dithio-polydopamine coating with a cancer target unit for synergistic and targeted drug delivery. Methods A multifunctional drug delivery system was constructed by coating a dual-responsive dithio-polydopamine (PDS) on porous CeO2 nanorods and subsequent conjugation of lactose derivative, where the PDS was formed by self-polymerization of dithio-dopamine (DOPASS).Results The multifunctional drug delivery system displayed excellent cancer targeted ability resulting from the conjugation of lactose derivative, which could specifically recognize the overexpressed asialoglycoprotein receptors on the surface of HepG2 cells. It also showed a dual-responsive property of glutathione and pH, achieving controllable drug release from the cleavage of disulfide bond and subsequent degradation of PDS in cancer cells. Moreover, the degradation of PDS led to the exposure of CeO2 nanorods, which has a synergistic anticancer effect due to its cytotoxicity to cancer cells. Conclusion This work presents a good example of a rational design towards synergistic and targeted DDS for cancer chemotherapies.

Interface engineered Zn/Co-S@CeO2 heterostructured nanosheet arrays as efficient electrodes for supercapacitors

Dongdong Xu,Zhigao Xue,Lei Han,Kai Tao

Bimetallic sulfides with superior electrochemical activity are extensively explored as electrode materials for electrochemical energy related applications. However, their utilizations are impeded due to unfavorable faradaic reaction kinetics and poor electrochemical stability. To overcome these defects, this study reports interface engineering of heterogeneous nanosheet arrays on Ni foam (NF) through surface modification of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived zinc cobalt sulfide (Zn/Co-S) with CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). MOF-derived porous Zn/Co-S nanosheets have highly exposed electrochemical active sites and abundant channels for charge transport. The strong interfacial coupling between Zn/Co-S and defective CeO 2 leads to fast charge transfer, thereby improving electrochemical activity. The CeO 2 can also prevent Zn/Co-S from degrading in KOH solution. Moreover, the self-supported electrode shows high electronic conductivity and strong adhesion with the conductive substrate. Therefore, the specific capacity and electrochemical stability of resulting Zn/Co-S@CeO 2 /NF are significantly higher compared with Zn/Co-S/NF. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) based on Zn/Co-S@CeO 2 /NF and activated carbon (AC) exhibits high energy storage capability (42.4 Wh kg −1 ) and outstanding operating durability (91.1 % after 8000 cycles). These results demonstrate that the as-prepared electrode is a superior candidate for electrochemical devices .

A collaborative CeO2@metal-organic framework nanosystem to endow scaffolds with photodynamic antibacterial effect

F. Qi,Z. Wang,L. Yang,H. Li,G. Chen,S. Peng,S. Yang,C. Shuai

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy had attracted considerable attention in implant-associated infections treatment due to its high selectivity and no resistance. Actually, bacteria readily formed protective biofilm to cover themselves and impede the permeation of photosensitizers , severely impairing the therapeutic effect. Herein, a collaborative nanosystem was constructed by in-situ growing cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles on porphyrinic metal-organic framework PCN-224, and then mixed with poly- l -lactic acid (PLLA) powder to fabricate CeO 2 @PCN-224/PLLA scaffold. In the nanosystem, CeO 2 was expected to disrupt the biofilm integrity by releasing Ce 4+ , exposing bacteria. Subsequently, PCN-224 could grab this opportunity to kill the bacteria by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation, thereby achieving the desired antibacterial effect. Crystal violet staining and agarose gel electrophoresis results demonstrated that the bacterial biofilm was effectively eliminated by cleaving the extracellular DNA chains. Coomassie brilliant blue and acridine orange staining revealed that the generated ROS effectively killed bacteria by destroying their cell membrane , causing DNA hydrolysis and protein leakage. Furthermore, ROS could also weaken the antioxidant capacity of bacteria by consuming their glutathione, further accelerating bacterial death. As a consequence, the scaffolds presented a robust antibacterial rate of 97% against S . aureus . Collectively, this work provides a promising strategy for efficient implant-related infection treatment.

Modulation of the biocatalytic activity and selectivity of CeO2 nanozymes via atomic doping engineering

Shaofang Zhang,Haiyan Ruan,Qi Xin,Xiaoyu Mu,Hao Wang,Xiao-Dong Zhang

Artificial enzymes show prospects in biomedical applications due to their stable enzymatic catalytic activity and ease of preparation. CeO2 nanozymes represent a versatile platform showing multiple enzyme-mimicking activities, although their biocatalytic activities and selectivity are relatively poor for biomedical use. Herein, we developed Mn- and Co-doped CeO2 nanozymes (M/CeO2, M = Mn or Co) via atomic engineering to achieve a significant increase in enzyme-like activity. The M/CeO2 nanozymes exhibited outstanding peroxidase-like activity with a reaction rate about 8–10 times higher than that of CeO2. Importantly, the Co/CeO2 nanozyme preferred for catalase-like activity with a 4–6-fold higher catalytic rate than CeO2, while the Mn/CeO2 nanozyme had a predilection for improving the superoxide dismutase-like capacity. This indicated the selective modulation of enzyme-mimicking activities via atomic doping engineering. Cellular level experiments revealed the in vitro therapeutic effects of the nanozymes. Mn/CeO2 and Co/CeO2 selectively modulated the intracellular redox imbalance in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- or H2O2-stimulated nerve cells and improved cell survival. This work provides a feasible strategy for the design of catalytically selective artificial enzymes and facilitates the widespread application of CeO2 nanozymes in redox-related diseases.

Synthesis and Oxygen Storage Capacities of Yttrium-Doped CeO2 with a Cubic Fluorite Structure

Yaohui Xu,Liangjuan Gao,Zhao Ding

Doping CeO2with Y cations was achieved in this study using three strategies: doping only during the hydrothermal process (H-Y-doped CeO2), doping only during the impregnation process (I-Y-doped CeO2), and doping during both the hydrothermal and impregnation processes (H/I-Y-doped CeO2). During the three synthesis strategies of Y-doped CeO2, these Y ions could be incorporated into the CeO2lattice in the +3 state while holding the cubic fluorite structure, and no impurity phases were detected. Pure CeO2crystal itself contained a certain number of intrinsicVOdefects, and Y-doping was beneficial for the creation of extrinsicVOdefects. The relative concentrations ofVOdefects were quantified by the values ofA592/A464obtained from Raman spectra, which were 1.47, 0.93, and 1.16 for the H-Y-, I-Y-, and H/I-Y-doped CeO2, respectively, and were higher than that of the undoped one (0.67). Moreover, the OSCs of the three Y-doped CeO2were enhanced, and the sequence of OSCs was: H-Y-doped CeO2(0.372 mmol/g) > H/I-Y-doped CeO2(0.353 mmol/g) > I-Y-doped CeO2(0.248 mmol/g) > Undoped CeO2(0.153 mmol/g); this result was in good agreement with the Raman spectroscopy results.Keywords:CeO2;rare-earth;doping;hydrothermal;impregnation;oxygen storage capability

Island-like CeO2 decorated LiMn2O4: Surface modification enhancing electrochemical lithium extraction and cycle performance

Guiling Luo,Xiaowei Li,Linlin Chen,Yuning Zhang,Jun Gu,Yanhong Chao,Wenshuai Zhu,Zhichang Liu,Chunming Xu

Extracting lithium from salt lakes is an effective way to relieve the shortage of lithium resources. Electrochemical lithium extraction has attracted wide attention due to its high selectivity , eco-friendliness, and high-efficiency. Functional surface coating is an effective approach to improve the cycling performance, stability, and conductivity of the electroactive materials. In this work, LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) electrode materials were prepared via sol–gel method with island-like CeO 2 coating (CeLMO) for lithium electrochemical adsorption from simulated brine. CeO 2 is helpful to inhibit the agglomeration of active metal oxides and promote the contact and electron transfer between metal oxides. Based on the results from X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopy , the fate of lithium intercalation and deintercalation in CeLMO is illuminated. CeLMO-2//Ag electrochemical system can produce 96% pure Li + from Li 2 CO 3 precipitated mother liquor, and the adsorption capacity is 36.52 mg·g −1 . The capacity retention after 30 cycles was 60% at 50 mA·g −1 , and the Mn dissolution loss rate is 0.016%. In summary, island-like oxide coating improves electrochemical lithium adsorption efficiency and is a promising technology for producing battery-grade lithium products.

Catalytic Ozonation of Norfloxacin Using Co-Mn/CeO2 as a Multi-Component Composite Catalyst

Ruicheng Li,Jianhua Xiong,Yuanyuan Zhang,Shuangfei Wang,Hongxiang Zhu,Lihai Lu

In this study, a Co-Mn/CeO2composite was prepared through a facile sol-gel method and used as an efficient catalyst for the ozonation of norfloxacin (NOR). The Co-Mn/CeO2composite was characterized via XRD, SEM, BET and XPS analysis. The catalytic ozonation of NOR by Co-Mn/CeO2under different conditions was systematically investigated, including the effect of the initial solution’s pH, Co-Mn/CeO2composite dose, O3dose and NOR concentration on degradation kinetics. Only about 3.33% of total organic carbon (TOC) and 72.17% of NOR could be removed within 150 min by single ozonation under the conditions of 60 mg/L of NOR and 200 mL/min of O3at pH= 7 and room temperature, whereas in the presence of 0.60 g/L of the Co-Mn/CeO2composite under the same conditions, 87.24% NOR removal was obtained through the catalytic ozonation process. The results showed that catalytic ozonation with the Co-Mn/CeO2composite could effectively enhance the degradation and mineralization of NOR compared to a single ozonation system alone. The catalytic performance of CeO2was significantly improved by the modification with Mn and Co. Co-Mn/CeO2represents a promising way to prepare efficient catalysts for the catalytic ozonation of organic polluted water. The removal efficiency of NOR in five cycles indicates that Co-Mn/CeO2is stable and recyclable for catalytic ozonation in water treatment. Keywords:antibiotics;catalytic ozonation;emerging contaminant;Co-Mn/CeO2;norfloxacin

Enhancing the ketonization efficiency of biomass through selective conversion of furanic compounds

Kuan Ding,Junheng Zhang,Zhihan Wu,Wangliang Li,Yuming Zhang,Shu Zhang

Catalytic ketonization of biomass is an effective approach for the deoxygenation of bio-oil and the enrichment of high-purity ketone products. However, the bio-oil contains a large amount of furanic components with oxygenated side groups (e.g., furfural, furfuralcohol, etc.), which severely hinders the efficiency of the ketonization reaction. In response to this challenge, this study employed Pd-based catalysts for selective conversion of furfural into "keto-friendly" components, thereby mitigating their inhibitory effects. Initially, three morphologies of CeO 2 (the main catalyst for ketonization) were selected to investigate their influence on furfural conversion. It was found that the products were mainly furfural (exceeding 86 %), with only up to approximately 13 % of "keto-friendly" products (mainly furans) detected, indicating that pure CeO 2 exhibits a weak catalytic effect on the effective conversion of furfural. Compared with pure CeO 2 , the yield of "keto-friendly" products increased significantly when 1 wt% Pd was loaded, demonstrating the excellent catalytic performance of Pd in the effective conversion of furfural. Co-doping of Pd and Zr (5 wt%) on CeO 2 further increased the "keto-friendly" products to 66 %, suggesting a synergistic effect of Pd and Zr. Mechanism analysis revealed that Pd promotes the formation of furans and benzenes by enhancing the decarbonylation of furfural and subsequent furan ring opening reactions, while the competing carbonyl hydrogenation pathway is weakened. The findings of this study will be beneficial for enhancing the biomass ketonization conversion, thereby providing valuable references for the high-value utilization of biomass.

Preparation of a Novel UV-Shielding Reagent and Its Effects on Properties of PVC

Wang Bin,He Yaqi,Jiang Fan,Ma Xiangmei

Abstract Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is one of the most used polymers, but the mechanical and esthetic properties can deteriorate for use outdoors because of ultraviolet (UV) light or heat. The addition of stabilizers is indispensable method for improving the stability of PVC. In this work, a facile synthetic method of CeO 2 quantum dots (QDs) was used, for achieving the best dispersion and improvement of anti-UV properties, the surface of CeO 2 QDs was modified by ethyl 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (EDHB), which was dispersed within the PVC matrix using the casting method to investigate the anti-UV and thermal properties. X-ray powder diffraction spectra (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV spectrophotometry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were applied to characterize the structures, morphologies, and properties. The results highlighted that EDHB/CeO 2 can help reduce damages of PVC upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and heat.

Finely Tailoring Metal–Support Interactions via Transient High-Temperature Pulses

Shijin Liu,Cheng Lin,Jinli Chen,Haojie Liu,Wenhui Shi,Rong Hu,Hanwen Liu,Junyi Lian,Jinming Guo,Yonggang Yao

Metal–support interactions (MSI) play a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic activity and stability of metal catalysts by establishing a stable metal-oxide interface. However, precisely controlling MSI at the atomic scale remains a significant challenge, as how to construct an optimal MSI is still not fully understood: Both insufficient and excessive MSI showed inferior catalytic performance. In this study, we propose finely tuning MSI using temporal-precise transient high-temperature pulse heating. Using Pt/CeO2 as a model system, we systematically investigate how variations in pulse duration and atmosphere influence the reconstruction of the metal–support interface and MSIs. This leads to the formation of two distinct types of MSI: (1) strong MSI (SMSI, Pt@CeO2) and (2) reactive MSI (RMSI, Pt5Ce@CeO2), each with unique compositions, structures, and electrochemical behaviors. Notably, Pt5Ce@CeO2 with RMSI exhibits remarkable catalytic performance in the alkaline hydrogen evolution, showing an overpotential of −29 mV and stable operation for over 300 h at −10 mA·cm–2. Theoretical studies reveal that alloying Pt with Ce to form Pt5Ce modifies the electronic structure of Pt, shifting the d-band center to optimize the adsorption and dissociation of intermediates, thereby reducing the reaction energy barrier. Moreover, the intimate interaction of Pt5Ce with CeO2 further improves the activity and stability. Our strategy enables precise, stepwise, and controllable regulation of MSIs, providing insights for the development of highly efficient and durable heterostructured catalysts with optimal MSI for a wide range of catalytic applications.

Designing Proton Conducting Electrolytes for Low-Temperature Ceramic Fuel Cells

Jun Xie,M. A. K.Yousaf Shah,Muneerah Alomar,Naveed Mushtaq,Yuzheng Lu,Muhammad Khalid,Muhammad Asif

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) can be made to last longer and perform better if their operating temperatures are lowered. Traditional SOFCs, however, have poor performance at low temperatures due to significant Ohmic and polarization losses. Regarding ionic conductivity, doped ceria excels as a low-temperature SOFC catalyst. In this study, Bi-doped CeO2 (Bi0.1Ce0.9O2) has been used to function as an electrolyte in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). The Bi–CeO2 is prepared as a functional electrolyte layer placed between two symmetrical porous electrodes NCAL (Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2–δ) by a wet chemical coprecipitation process. Using Na2Co3 as a precipitating agent enhances the performance of the produced Bi–CeO2 particles by enhancing their surface characteristics. The synthesized Bi–CeO2 electrolyte demonstrates an impressive fuel cell performance with a high ionic conductivity of 0.192 S/cm at a low temperature of 520 °C. Additionally, Bi-doped CeO2 demonstrates remarkable proton performance, with 660 mW/cm2 and an activation energy of only 0.456 eV at 520 °C. The mechanism of high conduction was proposed in great detail. The findings demonstrate that high ionic and proton conductivity in fuel cells is possible at low temperatures. In addition, the suggested work hints at the possibility of designing well-functioning electrolytes for advancing low-temperature fuel-cell technology.

Catalytic activity of Ru supported on SmCeOx for ammonia decomposition: The effect of Sm doping

Haodong Tang,Yao Wang,Wujian Zhang,Zongjian Liu,Lichun Li,Wenfeng Han,Ying Li

SmCeO x composite oxide with Sm 3+ occupying Ce 4+ site in CeO 2 crystal lattice , prepared via citric acid complexation method, was loaded with 2 w% Ru by impregnation method and the as-prepared catalyst was then evaluated for ammonia decomposition. The results show that the partial substitution of Ce 4+ by Sm 3+ produces a positive effect on the catalyst performance and SmCeO x supported Ru exhibits a much higher low-temperature catalytic activity for ammonia decomposition compared with other supports such as Sm 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , and a physical mixture of Sm 2 O 3 and CeO 2 . For example, the ammonia conversion is increased from 54.6% to 74.9% at a temperature of 400 °C and a space velocity of 3900 ml/g cat ·h when CeO 2 is replaced by Sm 0.4 Ce 0.6 O 1.8 . TEM and CO chemisorption investigations reveal that the excellent performance of Ru/SmCeO x catalyst is related to its high Ru dispersion. The results of BET, EPR and H 2 -TPR suggest that the partial substitution of Ce 4+ with Sm 3+ may induce the formation of oxygen vacancies and the high Ru dispersion can be attributed to the presence of large amount of single-electron trapped oxygen vacancies on the surface of SmCeO x , which have a strong interaction with Ru and thus Ru preferentially occupies the oxygen vacancies. This experimental observation is also supported by the DFT calculation result that Ru species adsorbed on the oxygen vacancy has a low adsorption energy .
