An efficient, green and scale-up synthesis of amides from esters and amines has been developed using Ru-MACHO as a readily available catalyst. A diverse range of amides were obtained in moderate to excellent yields (55–98%). Furthermore, when the scale of the amidation reaction was increased to 240.0 mmol, the desired amide still could be obtained in high yield (48.2 g of N -benzylbenzamide, 95%).

Selective catalytic hydrotreatment of lignin-derived phenols and dimeric ethers into alkanes is crucial for utilization of lignin and its fragments. Herein, we developed an efficient catalytic system with well-dispersed metal nanoparticles supported on SBA-15 synergistic with an ionic liquid. The catalytic system could catalyze the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of various monomeric and dimeric lignin-derived phenols into the corresponding alkanes under acid free conditions. The synergistic [Bmim]PF6-Ru/SBA-15 (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) catalysis exhibited the best HDO activity for lignin-derived phenols and dimeric ethers with >99.0% conversion and maximum >98.0% selectivity of the corresponding alkanes. The yield of cyclohexane from diphenyl ether was 97.7% with 100% conversion under 2 MPa H2 at 130 °C for 6 h. The mechanism investigation confirmed that the Ru/SBA-15 catalyst and the anion of [Bmim]PF6 played crucial roles in the hydrogenation process and deoxidization process, respectively. The catalytic system was reused six times for HDO of diphenyl ether to test its stability.

Ruthenium nanoparticles supported onto aluminum-doped mesoporous silica catalysts (Ru/Al–SBA-15) are fabricated using hydrothermal and impregnation methods for catalysis application. The Ru/Al–SBA-15-3 catalyst at a Si/Al molar ratio of 3 exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of p-phthalic acid with high conversion efficiency (100.0%) and cis-isomer selectivity (84.0%) in water. Moreover, this system displays exceptional stability and recyclability through preserving the conversion efficiency, as well as a cis-isomer selectivity of 90.2 and 83.3%, respectively, after reusing it fourteen times. Such an exceptional system can also be ideal for the hydrogenation of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and their ester derivatives in water. Strong Lewis acid sites due to doped Al species play significant roles in the hydrogenation reaction. Moreover, isotope labeling studies indicated that water molecules effectively participated in the hydrogenation reaction. Hydrogen and water contributed half of the hydrogen atoms for this hydrogenation reaction. In the end, a plausible mechanistic pathway for the hydrogenation of p-phthalic acid using the Ru/Al–SBA-15-3 catalyst in water is proposed.

Co-doping of heteroatoms into the support of metal-supported catalysts is a prevalent method to improve the catalytic performance by adjusting metal–support interactions. This paper investigated the catalytic performances of Ru supported on biomass-derived char (Ru@Char), N-doped char (Ru@N-Char), and N,P-co-doped char (Ru@NP-Char) in the emerging lignin-first depolymerization for both poplar (hardwood) and pine (softwood) samples, with an emphasis on the production of phenolic monomers. Various characterizations of the prepared catalysts showed that the codoping of N,P not only facilitated the formation of micropores in the char but also introduced weak and moderate acid sites. Furthermore, the sizes of Ru nanoparticles on the codoped char became smaller, and the proportion of metallic Ru species was increased, resulting from electron transfer from Ru to the codoped char. The yields of the phenolic monomers from poplar and pine over Ru@NP-Char were as high as 57.98 and 17.53 wt % Klason lignin, respectively, which were improved by factors of 1.4–2.5 in comparison to Ru@Char and Ru@N-Char. Full delignification during the depolymerization of both poplar and pine was also achieved over Ru@NP-Char.

Visible light photocatalytic CO 2 conversion is a promising solution to global warming and energy shortage. Herein, we build a well-designed bridge-like nanostructure, that is, the phosphonated Ru complex (RuP) light absorber–TiO 2 bridge–Cu catalyst. In this nanostructure, brookite TiO 2 serving as a bridge is spatially connected to the RuP and Cu on each of its sides and could thus physically separate the photoexcited holes and electrons over the RuP and Cu, respectively. Given its effective charge separation, this RuP–TiO 2 –Cu assembly exhibits superior CO 2 photoreduction activity relative to RuP–SiO 2 –Cu under visible light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm). The catalytic activity is further optimized by adopting brookite TiO 2 with various electronic band structures. Results reveal the rapid movement of electrons from the RuP through the conduction band of TiO 2 and finally to the Cu surface. This property is crucial in CO 2 photoreduction activity.

A highly effective transformation from renewable biomass and its derivatives into high-value-added chemicals and biofuels is important and challenging. Herein, a N-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC)-supported Ru catalyst developed by an incipient wetness impregnation method was reported for the reductive amination of levulinic acid (LA)/esters with amines to N-substituted 5-methyl-2-pyrrolidinones. A complete conversion of LA with a 99.8% yield of N-hexyl-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (HMP) was achieved over 0.05 mol % Ru/NMC under mild conditions of 120 °C and 1.5 MPa H2 for 4 h, giving a high turnover frequency (3667 h–1). Furthermore, Ru/NMC exhibited superior stability and recyclability (reusable 21 cycles without loss of activity). The excellent performance of the Ru/NMC catalyst was mainly attributed to the introduction of N species to the mesoporous carbon, which not only improved the anchoring and the dispersion of Ru nanoparticles on the catalyst surface but also provided moderate basic sites and transferred electrons from NMC to Ru nanoparticles, as revealed by detailed characterizations. Additionally, the developed Ru/NMC catalytic system was applicable to LA/esters and various amines to afford the corresponding N-substituted 5-methyl-2-pyrrolidinones with excellent yields (80–99%).

Herein, Ru-doped V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 (VWTi) catalysts were prepared to study the impact of Ru doping on chlorobenzene (CB) oxidation activity. The introduction of Ru weakens the V–O bond strength, resulting in neutralizing the Lewis acid effect and optimizing the overall acid balance of the VWTi catalyst. Moreover, the presence of RuO 2 can significantly enhance the redox capability and surface lattice oxygen mobility. Hence, a significant improvement in both low-temperature activity and CO 2 selectivity has been achieved with the Ru-doped VWTi catalyst, reaching a CB conversion of 50% at 205 °C and a CO 2 selectivity of 73% at 400 °C for 0.50Ru-VWTi catalyst.

The practical application of direct-ammonia protonic ceramic fuel cells (DA-PCFCs) is constrained by the sluggish decomposition of ammonia and the structural degradation of conventional Ni-based anodes. Herein, a multifunctional anode is developed by depositing a Sr 2 Fe 1.4 Ru 0.1 Mo 0.5 O 6-δ (SFRM) perovskite catalytic layer onto a Ni-BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ cermet. Under operating conditions, this layer enables the in-situ exsolution of uniformly dispersed and sintering-resistant Ru–Fe alloy (RFA) nanoparticles, thereby creating a stable and catalytically active interface. The SFRM-modified single cell achieves peak power densities of 1.33 cm –2 and 1.02 cm –2 at 700 °C in H 2 and NH 3 , respectively, with the NH 3 -fueled performance representing a 15.9 % improvement over the unmodified single cell. Moreover, the cell exhibits excellent durability, operating stably for over 100 h in NH 3 . Combined experimental and density functional theory calculations reveal that the exsolved RFA nanoparticles not only lower the energy barrier for NH 3 dehydrogenation but also, via strong metal-support interaction, regulate interfacial charge transfer and suppress Ni 0 coarsening. This strategy successfully decouples high catalytic activity from long-term stability, providing an effective pathway for durable, high-performance DA-PCFCs.

Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for alkaline water electrolysis. Herein, ruthenium-doped cobalt phosphide encapsulated in open hollow nanoboxes of boron-nitrogen-codoped carbon (Ru-CoP/BNC-1) was successfully synthesized via a three-step strategy. Structural characterization revealed that the synergistic effect between Ru and boron- nitrogen-codoped carbon quantum dots (BCQDs) facilitated the selective etching of the ZIF-67 precursor, leading to a unique nanostructure with abundant lattice distortions and a high specific surface area after phosphidation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ Raman spectroscopy confirmed that Ru doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of Co, promoting the formation of high-valent cobalt species, while B doping facilitates surface reconstruction via interfacial effects and leaching during OER, thereby optimizing the reaction pathway. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the catalyst delivers outstanding OER performance under alkaline conditions, requiring an overpotential of only 227 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 80.01 mV dec-1, outperforming most reported cobalt-based catalysts and even commercial RuO2. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability, showing negligible decay after 117 h of continuous operation at 50 mA cm-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that the co-doping of Ru and B synergistically reduces the free-energy barrier for the *O-to-*OOH step, improving the reaction kinetics. This work provides a novel strategy for designing high-performance cobalt-based electrocatalysts through multi-element synergy.

Although metal oxide semiconductors are promising candidates for practical disease diagnosis based on H2S detection, achieving high sensitivity and a low detection limit remains a considerable challenge. In this work, Ru-functionalized Mo-doped WO3 (Ru@Mo-WO3) nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process followed by annealing and chemical reduction. The H2S sensing performances of all WO3-based sensors were systematically investigated. The optimized Ru@Mo-WO3 sensor exhibited a remarkable response of 120 to 5 ppm H2S at the optimal operating temperature, which was approximately 30 times higher than that of pristine WO3. Moreover, the Ru@Mo-WO3 sensor demonstrates short response times, excellent H2S selectivity, and remarkable long-term stability with a low detection limit (7.9 ppb). Comprehensive experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the significant enhancement in sensing performance originates from the synergistic effects of Mo doping and Ru sensitization. Meanwhile, a wireless gas-detection device based on the as-fabricated Ru@Mo-WO3 gas sensor was developed to achieve real-time monitoring of oral H2S for noninvasive oral hygiene assessment. This study offers a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance WO3-based H2S sensors.

A single-step removal of γ-carbinol from lignin β-O-4 linkages was reported. • Key parameters for γ-carbinol removal were systematically screened and optimized. • Ru/C system enabled efficient upgrading of monophenols from birch-derived bio-oil. • The selectivity and yield of 2,6-dimethoxy-4-ethylphenol reach 53.02% and 39.33%. • A promising route for lignin valorization was proposed. Development of efficient strategies for converting the C3 β-O-4 motif of lignin into a simplified C2 β-O-4 structure is of great significance, yet it remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report the use of Ru/C as a catalyst to convert α-hydroxy-free C3 β-O-4 fragments into C2 β-O-4 fragments via a one-step strategy for the removal of the γ-carbinol group. A series of lignin-derived phenolic model compounds were selected to systematically investigate the effects of key reaction parameters, including temperature, reaction time, catalyst dosage, and substituent structure on the removal of the γ-carbinol group. On the basis of the obtained reaction rules and optimized parameters, the Ru/C-catalyzed system was successfully applied to the upgrading of monophenolic components in bio-oil obtained from the depolymerization of authentic birch lignin. Under optimized reaction conditions, 4-(3-hydroxypropyl)-2,6-dimethoxyphenol in the bio-oil achieved a conversion of 74.18%, affording the target product 2,6-dimethoxy-4-ethylphenol with a selectivity of 53.02% and a yield of 39.33%. This study provides a novel and efficient approach for the valorization of lignin-derived bio-oil, laying a solid foundation for the sustainable utilization of lignin resources. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hindered by its intrinsic sluggish kinetics remains a critical bottleneck in advancing water electrolysis and metal-air battery technologies. To address this challenge, herein, a Ru single-atom-anchored MoS 2 nanosheet array on carbon cloth (Ru–MoS 2 /CC) is rationally designed to regulate the local electronic structure at the atomic scale. The isolated Ru atoms induce substantial electronic reconstruction of the MoS 2 matrix, manifested by charge redistribution, work-function reduction, enhanced electronic states near the Fermi level, orbital hybridization, and optimized d -band configuration. Such synergistic electronic modulation effectively tailors the adsorption energetics of key HER/OER intermediates (H* and OOH*), leading to markedly improved bifunctional electrocatalytic activity. Consequently, the optimized Ru-MoS 2 /CC delivers low overpotentials of 230 mV at 50 mA‧ cm −2 for OER and 103 mV at 10 mA‧ cm −2 for HER in 1 M KOH. This work highlights atomic-scale electronic engineering as an effective strategy for developing high-performance MoS 2 -based bifunctional electrocatalysts and provides fundamental insights into structure–activity relationships for sustainable water electrolysis.
