In this study, nanofiber films were prepared by electrospinning technology with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) as raw materials. Tea polyphenols (TPs) were incorporated in the above matrix, which increased physicochemical (thermal and mechanical characteristics) and antibacterial properties of the nanofiber films. The release behavior of phenolic compounds from PVA/KGM-TPs nanofiber films was determined in different food simulants; antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the films were also evaluated. The results showed that the addition of KGM increased the physical and chemical properties of the films. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) increased from 5.40 ± 0.33 to 10.62 ± 0.34 and from 7.24 ± 0.32 to 18.10 ± 0.91, respectively. PVA/KGM-TPs nanofiber films performed controlled release of TPs, with final release of 49.17% in 3% acetic acid, 43.6% in 10% ethanol, and 59.42% in 95% ethanol. The nanofiber films showed good antioxidation properties, with the free radical scavenging rate increasing from 1.33% to 25.61%, and good antibacterial properties with inhibition zones againstE. coliandS. aureusof 24.33 ± 0.47 mm and 34.33 ± 0.94 mm, respectively. In addition, the as-prepared films showed significant preservation performance for raw bananas at 25 °C.

Bio-based active food packaging materials have a high market demand. We use coaxial electrospinning technology to prepare core–shell structured nanofibers with sustained antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The fiber core layer was composed of gelatin and tea polyphenols, whereas tea polyphenols provide antibacterial and antioxidant properties; the fiber sheath was composed of pullulan polysaccharides with antioxidant properties. By using a scanning electron microscope, it can be seen that the diameter distribution of the prepared nanofibers was uniform and the surface is smooth; using a transmission electron microscope, it can be clearly seen that the nanofibers have a core–shell structure; Fourier Transform Infrared and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the nanofibers have an amorphous structure; the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging shows that nanofibers have higher antioxidant properties with the addition of tea polyphenols; antibacterial test showed that nanofibers had obvious inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli ; and the nanofiber film dissolution test shows that nanofibers can be used as fast soluble active packaging. Finally, core–sheath-structured nanofibers can serve as active packaging for instant food, possessing both rapid water solubility and excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activity, making water-soluble nanofibers interesting applications in the field of food packaging.

Sensitive intelligent films can be used to accurately monitor food freshness. In this study, a cellulose acetate curcumin-loaded cyclodextrin (CD)-based metal-organic framework intelligent film (CA-Cur@CD-MOF) was developed to monitor shrimp freshness at different spoilage stages in real time. The mechanical, barrier, optical, and ammonia-sensitive properties of this film were studied. Notably, this film demonstrated effective ammonia-sensitive color development, reaching a Δ E value of 8.5 in 2 min under an ammonia atmosphere of approximately 0.4 mM. This intelligent film exhibits good DPPH free radical scavenging ability, high thermal stability, and excellent theoretical limit of detection (LOD). Interestingly, shrimp can be classified as “fresh”, “sub-fresh”, and “spoilage” during the monitoring of shrimp freshness. Furthermore, a significant correlation ( R 2 = 0.9641) was observed between the TVB-N and Δ E value for this film. Therefore, this intelligent film is promising for the real-time monitoring of freshness of shrimp and other protein-rich foods.

Polybutylene adipate-terephthalate (PBAT) offers a convincing ecological alternative to the traditional fossil-based plastics due to its biodegradability and robust mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to develop PBAT-based bio-composite films through incorporating functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and curcumin (CUR). In order to improve the interfacial compatibility with the PBAT matrix and co-doping with CUR, CNC was modified using dodecyl succinic anhydride (DxCNC). In this ternary bio-composite system, CUR functioned as a bio-based antioxidant and antimicrobial agent. The presence of CUR also provides excellent UV-shielding properties, whereas the DxCNC effectively enhances the controlled release of CUR. The synergistic effect between DxCNC and CUR in boosting antimicrobial properties, with the inhibition values forE. coliandS. aureusreached 1.82 log CFU/cm2and 2.12 log CFU/cm2, respectively. These findings indicate DxCNC/CUR/PBAT ternary composite films as a promising material for eco-friendly packaging products.

Oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) can adversely affect tissue repair, whereas endowing biomaterials with antioxidant activity can improve the in vivo microenvironment, thereby promoting angiogenesis and osteogenesis. Accordingly, this study utilized epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a material known for its reducing properties, oxidative self-polymerization capability, and strong binding characteristics, to modify a bioactive core–shell fibrous membrane (10RP-PG). Compared to the 10RP-PG fibrous membrane, the EGCG-modified fibrous membrane (E/10RP-PG) exhibited superior hydrophilicity, excellent cell adhesion, and compatibility. Moreover, the EGCG-modified fibrous membrane can effectively scavenge free radicals, ameliorate the local microenvironment, and foster angiogenesis (enhancing the expression of angiogenic genes in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by 1.58 times and promoting vascular generation area upon subcutaneous implantation by 4.47 times). The enhancement of angiogenic activity of the E/10RP-PG fibrous membrane further promoted cartilage degeneration and absorption, as well as new bone formation, thus facilitating the repair of bone defects. This study provides a new strategy for promoting bone defect repair through the surface modification of biomaterials with an antioxidant agent, and the fabricated E/10RP-PG fibrous membranes show promise for guiding vascularized bone regeneration.

This study focused on synthesis of innovative hydrogels with electric field response from modified pineapple peel cellulose and hericium erinaceus chitosan and gelatin based on Schiff base reaction. A series of hydrogels were prepared by oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose , gelatin and chitosan at different deacetylation degree via mild Schiff base reaction. Subsequently experiments towards the characterization of oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose/gelatin/chitosan (OHGCS) hydrogel polymers were carried out by FTIR/XRD/XPS, swelling performances and electric response properties. The prepared hydrogels exhibited stable and reversible bending behaviors under repeated on–off switching of electric fields, affected by ionic strength , electric voltage and pH changes. The swelling ratio of OHGCS hydrogels was found reduced as deacetylation degree increasing and reached the maximum ratio ∼ 2250 % for OHGCS-1. In vitro drug releasing study showed the both curcumin loading capacity and release amount of Cur-OHGCS hydrogels arrived about 90 % during 6 h. Antioxidation assessments showed that the curcumin-loaded hydrogels had good antioxidation activities, in which, 10 mg Cur-OHGCS-1 hydrogel could reach to the maximum of about 90 % DPPH scavenging ratio. These results indicate the OHGCS hydrogels have potentials in sensor and drug delivery system .

The clinical treatments of maxillofacial bone defects pose significant challenges due to complex microenvironments, including severe inflammation, high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and potential bacterial infection. Herein, we propose the de novo design of an efficient, versatile, and precise electron-donable heterojunction with synergetic Ru-Cu pair sites (Ru-Cu/EDHJ) for superior biocatalytic regeneration of inflammatory mandible defects and pH-controlled antibacterial therapies. Our studies demonstrate that the unique structure of Ru-Cu/EDHJ enhances the electron density of Ru atoms and optimizes the binding strength of oxygen species, thus improving enzyme-like catalytic performance. Strikingly, this biocompatible Ru-Cu/EDHJ can efficiently switch between ROS scavenging in neutral media and ROS generation in acidic media, thus simultaneously exhibiting superior repair functions and bioadaptive antibacterial properties in treating mandible defects in male mice. We believe synthesizing such biocatalytic heterojunctions with exceptional enzyme-like capabilities will offer a promising pathway for engineering ROS biocatalytic materials to treat trauma, tumors, or infection-caused maxillofacial bone defects.

The objective of this study was to formulate Pickering emulsions stabilized by transglutaminase cross-linked mulberry leaf protein (TG-MLP) nanoparticles as a delivery system for curcumin (Cur) and to assess its bioaccessibility both in vivo and in vitro. The encapsulation efficiency of curcumin in high-internal-phase Pickering emulsions (HIPEs) prepared at pH 10 with a 20 mg/mL concentration of TG-MLP reached 93%. Compared to Oil-Cur, Cur-HIPEs exhibited superior antioxidant activity. Furthermore, Cur-HIPEs demonstrated enhanced stability against ultraviolet irradiation, storage under dark and visible light, and heating, in contrast to Oil-Cur. Among the various conditions tested, HIPEs stabilized by TG-MLP nanoparticles at an ionic strength of 1000 mM offered the most effective protection for curcumin. Moreover, TG-MLP nanoparticles at pH 8 provided better stability for the formulated HIPEs compared to those at pH 6 and 10. During simulated gastrointestinal digestion, the bioaccessibility of curcumin in Cur-HIPEs was significantly increased to 30.1% compared to Oil-Cur. In murine studies, higher levels of curcumin were detected in the stomach, small intestine, rectum, ileum, and feces following administration of Cur-HIPEs, indicating improved protection, absorption, and potential biological activity during digestion. Consequently, HIPEs offer excellent protection and delivery for curcumin during digestion.

The peroxidase mimics usually requires the addition of exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which greatly hinder their practical applications. Herein, through rational co-modification of multiple elements (potassium (K), chlorine (Cl) and iodine (I)), the modified carbon nitride nanomaterials (KCl/KI-CN) could serve as efficient bifunctional catalysts. The multiple elements doping and the incorporation of cyano groups ( C N) are deemed to enhance their photocatalytic and peroxidase-like activity, respectively. Based on the photocatalytic function, H 2 O 2 can be produced continuously and steadily via two-electron oxygen reduction over modified carbon nitride under visible light irradiation. Subsequently, the KCl/KI-CN could catalyze the chromogenic substrate by the in-situ produced H 2 O 2 . Taking advantage of the bifunctional properties of modified carbon nitride, we for the first time demonstrate a self-cascade catalytic process and apply successfully for the ascorbic acid (AA) detection and versatile total antioxidant capacity (TAC) evaluation. This paper not only prepares an efficiently bifunctional catalyst but also provides a new self-cascade photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production strategy for the peroxidase-like application.

The functionality and excellent low temperature dyeability of wool fabrics play a crucial role in expanding their potential applications in the fields of healthcare and technical textiles. The study proposes a highly effective modification method to impart coloration enhancement and functionality for wool fibers using lipoic acid (LA) as a coupling agent to bind hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) capped magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ). The structure and morphology of the modified wool fabrics (MWF) were characterized by various measure techniques including FT-ATR, FE-SEM/EDS, XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The results demonstrated the successful immobilization of HP-β-CD capped Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the surface of wool fibers through LA. The MWF exhibited enhanced wettability, anti-wrinkle performance, improved UV resistance, effective antioxidation, and good antibacterial effect against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus). These properties were found to be dosage-dependent on LA. In addition, the dyed MWF with Curcumin and Acid red 1 demonstrated higher color strength compared to untreated wool, and the color strength (K/S value) reached to 17.1 and 23.4 respectively when using 4% (o.w.f) dye concentration at 80℃ without any pH adjustment. Furthermore, the dyed MWF with both dyes exhibited the improved rubbing and washing colorfastness. This study presents a potential effective approach for enhancement in the bio-functionality and dyeability of wool fabrics.

High oxidative stress and inflammatory cell infiltration are major causes of the persistent bone erosion and difficult tissue regeneration in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Triptolide (TPL) has become a highly anticipated anti-rheumatic drug due to its excellent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the sudden drug accumulation caused by the binding of “stimulus-response” and “drug release” in a general smart delivery system is difficult to meet the shortcoming of extreme toxicity and the demand for long-term administration of TPL. Herein, we developed a dual dynamically cross-linked hydrogel (SPT@TPL), which demonstrated sensitive RA microenvironment regulation and microenvironment modulation-independent TPL release for 30 days. The abundant borate ester/tea polyphenol units in SPT@TPL possessed the capability to respond and regulate high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels on-demand. Meanwhile, based on its dense dual crosslinked structure as well as the spontaneous healing behavior of numerous intermolecular hydrogen bonds formed after the breakage of borate ester, TPL could remain stable and slowly release under high ROS environments of RA, which dramatically reduced the risk of TPL exerting toxicity while maximized its long-term efficacy. Through the dual effects of ROS regulation and TPL sustained-release, SPT@TPL alleviated oxidative stress and reprogrammed macrophages into M2 phenotype, showing marked inhibition of inflammation and optimal regeneration of articular cartilage in RA rat model. In conclusion, this hydrogel platform with both microenvironment initiative regulation and TPL long-term sustained release provides a potential scheme for rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA), primarily characterized by the deterioration of articular cartilage, is a highly prevalent joint-disabling disease. The pathological onset and progression of OA are closely related to cartilage lubrication dysfunction and synovial inflammation. Synergistic options targeted at restorative lubrication and anti-inflammation are expected to be the most attractive candidates to treat OA and perhaps help prevent it. Herein, a bioinspired lubricant (HA/PA@Lipo) was fabricated by combining anionic hyaluronan-graft-poly(2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt) (HA/PA) with cationic liposomes (Lipo) via electrostatic interaction. HA/PA@Lipo mimicked the lubrication complex located on the outer cartilage surface and was endowed cartilage with excellent cartilage-lubricating performances. After the antioxidant gallic acid (GA) was loaded for dual functionality, HA/PA@Lipo-GA was prepared with added anti-inflammatory properties. HA/PA@Lipo-GA showed favorable biocompatibility with C28/I2 cells, inhibited the production of reactive oxygen, and regulated the expression levels of anabolic genes and proteins. The therapeutic effects of HA/PA@Lipo-GA were evaluated using a sodium iodoacetate–induced OA rat model, and the preventive effects of HA/PA@Lipo-GA were estimated in vivo. The results suggested the robust potential of HA/PA@Lipo-GA with dual functions as a candidate option for OA treatment and prevention.
