The efficient extraction of uranium (U) from aqueous solutions is of great significance for ensuring global energy security and advancing environmental remediation. In this work, a novel Fe 3+ -doped Aurivillius-type ferroelectric material (Fe-BBT-0.15) was developed for enhanced piezo-catalytic U(VI) extraction. The incorporation of Fe 3+ was systematically optimized to improve its intrinsic piezoelectric responsiveness and piezo-catalytic activity. The Fe-BBT-0.15 demonstrated outstanding catalytic performance. Over 85% of 50 mg/L U(VI) was removed after 180 min of the ultrasonication stimulation across a broad pH range of 3.5–8.5. The piezo-catalytic system exhibited strong tolerance to temperature fluctuations, complex background electrolytes, and various competing ions. The reaction pathway was elucidated by integrating the identification of key reactive radicals with in-situ monitoring of H 2 O 2 accumulation. The H 2 O 2 production, co-driven by O 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation/sonolysis, was attributed to the synergistic interplay of piezoelectric effect and cavitation effect. Combined with the XPS analysis, it was confirmed that the Fe-BBT-0.15 served as a stable “reaction center” and “charge pump”, which were capable of supporting the migration and utilization of charge carriers and reactive free radicals. Furthermore, XRD analysis revealed that U(VI) was immobilized in the form of metastudtite ((UO 2 )O 2 ·2H 2 O), a finding that directly linked the catalytically generated H 2 O 2 to effective uranium solidification. This study provides a high-performance adaptive piezo-catalyst and elucidates the underlying catalytic mechanism, thus, contributing to the advancement of sustainable uranium extraction.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a key reactive oxygen species involved in physiological regulation and pathological processes, and its accurate quantification is essential for bioanalysis and disease-related studies. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of Cu-Fe oxide nanozymes via a simple antisolvent crystallization strategy and systematically investigate their peroxidase-like catalytic activity toward colorimetric H 2 O 2 detection. By tuning the Cu/Fe molar ratio, the catalytic activity of the nanozymes can be effectively regulated, with Cu 2 FeO x exhibiting the highest peroxidase-like activity toward 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation in the presence of H 2 O 2 under acidic conditions and enabling sensitive colorimetric detection of H 2 O 2 over a linear range of 10–200 µM with a detection limit of 0.572 µM. Furthermore, the proposed sensing platform demonstrates satisfactory selectivity and reproducibility, and is successfully applied to the determination of H 2 O 2 released into cell culture supernatants after chemical stimulation. This work highlights the potential of composition‑regulated Cu-Fe oxide nanozymes as robust artificial enzymes for colorimetric H 2 O 2 sensing and provides insights into their application in bioanalytical systems.

Electrochemical seawater splitting is typically hindered by the corrosive effect of chloride ions (Cl⁻) on catalytic active sites during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a self-protecting Fe@NiAl electrocatalyst mediated by aluminate ions (Al(OH) 4 ⁻) was synthesized via a novel in-situ etching-oxidation strategy, which acts as an efficient and durable OER catalyst in alkaline seawater electrolyte. Comprehensive characterization techniques reveal that the incorporation of FeOOH and generation of oxygen vacancies (O vac ) modulate the chemical composition and electronic structure of Fe@NiAl, thereby promoting a γ-NiOOH/γ-FeOOH synergistic effect to enhance the OER activity. Of particular importance, the in-situ-generated Al(OH) 4 ⁻ within the Fe@NiAl catalyst exert a strong repulsive effect toward Cl⁻ in seawater, thereby significantly enhancing the catalyst’s corrosion resistance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that FeOOH incorporation lowers the energy barrier for the formation of OER active intermediates, while Al(OH) 4 ⁻ generation reduces the Cl⁻ adsorption energy. A flow-type anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer utilizing Fe@NiAl as the bifunctional electrode achieves a cell voltage of merely 2.31 V at 1.0 A cm⁻ 2 and sustains stable operation for 800 h in alkaline seawater. This work provides valuable insights and a feasible strategy for designing robust and corrosion-resistant electrocatalysts for industrial-scale seawater electrolysis applications.

The selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) over Ni catalysts offers a sustainable route for biomass valorization. However, the conventional Ni catalysts suffer from poor selectivity in FAL hydrogenation. Herein, we report that the moderate Fe doping in Ni/TiO 2 significantly enhances selectivity without compromising catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL. Notably, Ni/Fe-TiO 2 catalyst with Fe content ≥ 4.9 wt% maintained > 90% selectivity toward FOL at nearly 100% conversion, whereas Ni/TiO 2 achieved only 38% under the identical condition. Combined experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the enhanced catalytic performance of Ni/Fe-TiO 2 originates from the dilution of contiguous Ni sites by Fe, which suppresses the further hydrogenation of FOL. Moreover, Fe sites exhibited a stronger affinity for carbonyl groups compared to Ni(0), indicating complementary role where Ni(0) primarily facilitates H 2 dissociation, while Fe sites play a critical role in carbonyl activation. These findings underscore the superior synergistic effect of bimetallic systems in promoting selective functional group transformation.

The residues of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in aquatic environments have led to pressing environmental issues, necessitating the development of efficient removal technologies. In this study, we constructed an adsorption-degradation synergistic system based on Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles/graphene oxide/layered double hydroxides (Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs) for the removal of TCs from water. This Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs composite ingeniously combines the adsorption advantages of both GO and LDHs: GO serves as a growth substrate for LDHs, effectively preventing the LDHs from agglomerating into bulk masses, while LDHs also inhibit the interlayer stacking of GO. This leads to enhanced specific surface area of up to 581.7 m 2 /g, establishing a robust structural foundation for efficient adsorption. The incorporation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles not only endows the material with excellent magnetism for convenient magnetic separation and recovery but also utilizes its peroxidase-like activity to achieve catalytic degradation. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs for tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline reached 676.5 mg/g, 814.1 mg/g, and 808.1 mg/g, respectively, primarily driven by electrostatic, π-π and complexation interactions. In the presence of H₂O₂, Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs activating H₂O₂ to generate reactive oxygen species, achieving over 90% degradation rate within 1 h, demonstrating strong catalytic capability. Integrating adsorption with in-situ degradation, Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs functions as a network of micro-reactor factories, rapidly concentrating pollutants at catalytic active sites and creating a high-local-concentration microenvironment that dramatically accelerates catalytic reactions, thereby enhancing overall degradation efficiency. This study advances the development of adsorption-degradation bifunctional nanozymes for water purification.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to C 2 H 4 remains challenging due to inefficient multielectron transfer and sluggish C−C coupling kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate that precise engineering of metal−organic framework (MOF) nodes establishes dual-functional active sites that synergistically drive C−C coupling and H 2 O activation. A hybrid photocatalyst is constructed by integrating a porphyrinic MOF (Fe-MOFBPy), featuring axially coordinated bipyridine ligands that modulate paddlewheel Fe−N nodes, with carbon nitride (CN) to form a heterojunction. Controlled linker depletion introduces defects that generate coordinatively unsaturated Fe sites and enable rational tuning of Fe−N bonding. Combined density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the Fe−N bond acts as a dual-functional site, where the N atom facilitates H 2 O activation and proton transfer, while the Fe center promotes *CO + *CHO coupling toward C 2 intermediates. In contrast, defective MOFs with reduced Fe−N coordination form Fe−O sites that exhibit inferior activity due to inefficient H 2 O activation. Notably, the intrinsic flexibility of the Fe−N bond lowers the kinetic barrier for H 2 O dissociation. Consequently, the catalyst achieves a C 2 H 4 production rate of 24.5 μmol g −1 h −1 with an 87.1% electron-based selectivity, outperforming analogous systems. This work provides a blueprint for designing dual-functional sites in MOFs for solar-driven C 2 H 4 synthesis.

The large-scale consumption and low recycling rate of plastics necessitate effective chemical recycling solutions. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) serves as an ideal carbon source for synthesizing high-value carbon materials such as carbon nanotubes. In this study, a powdered Fe/MgO catalyst was prepared to convert the HDPE into high-quality SWCNTs in a two-stage reactor. Concurrently, reactive force field molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the adsorption, cracking, and carbon diffusion behaviors of pyrolytic intermediates on the Fe surface, along with the kinetics of iron carbide formation. The results demonstrate that Fe/MgO efficiently converts HDPE into SWCNTs, achieving a maximum yield of 33.7% with 1 g of the catalyst containing 2 wt % Fe at 900 ° C. The catalyst preferentially adsorbs olefins such as ethylene, suppresses the polymerization and cyclization of small molecules, and thereby promotes SWCNT growth. The high efficiency of the Fe/MgO catalyst is attributed to a unique high-temperature inversion of its spinel structure, which triggers Fe 3+ migration from the bulk to the surface. This work not only presents a high-value route for plastic waste utilization but also provides atomic insights into SWCNT synthesis from HDPE using Fe/MgO.

Antibiotics have been extensively used in medicine and aquaculture, leading to severe environmental contamination. Among them, chlortetracycline (CTC) has attracted considerable attention due to its large consumption and high residual risk. MIL-125(Ti), as a representative titanium-based metal–organic framework, exhibits good structural stability and tunability; however, its intrinsically weak visible-light response and rapid charge recombination limit further photocatalytic applications. To improve its photocatalytic performance, MIL-125 was first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and then Fe and S species were introduced through a combination of in situ coprecipitation and mild sulfuration, yielding an Fe/S-modified MIL-125 photocatalyst. The introduction of Na2S induced defect sites and coordinatively unsaturated centers on the MIL-125 surface, while the cooperative participation of Fe species further regulated the surface electronic structure and active-site distribution, thereby enhancing visible-light absorption and interfacial charge transfer. Under AM 1.5 irradiation, the optimized Fe/S-MIL-125 achieved a CTC degradation efficiency of 98.6% within 120 min at an initial concentration of 40 mg L−1. In addition, the material exhibited broad applicability toward multiple antibiotics, with degradation efficiencies exceeding 87% for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and clindamycin (CLI). Cycling tests demonstrated that the catalyst retained high activity after five successive runs, indicating excellent stability. Radical scavenging experiments and ESR analyses revealed that superoxide radicals (·O2−) were the dominant reactive species. Overall, the Fe/S-modified strategy significantly enhanced the photocatalytic performance of MIL-125 through defect engineering and interfacial charge regulation, offering a promising approach for the design of MOF-based materials for antibiotic removal.

A plasma-catalytic system coupled with floating electrode discharge with metal foam-supported catalysts was developed for efficient toluene degradation. The influences of different transition metal oxides (Co, Mn, Ce) loaded onto Fe foam (FF) substrates on the crystal structure, surface morphology and catalytic performance were systematically investigated. Catalysts were symmetrically placed on both sides of the floating electrode. Among the investigated metal oxides, Co was found to form a uniformly distributed CoFe 2 O 4 surface layer on the FF substrate, while Mn and Ce were heterogeneously dispersed as MnO 2 and CeO 2 , respectively. All metal-loaded catalysts enhanced the discharge power of the reactor, attributed to surface charge accumulation on metal oxides. The Co/FF catalyst exhibited the highest toluene degradation efficiency, CO 2 selectivity and O 3 decomposition capability. This plasma-Co/FF system significantly reduced the O 3 concentration from 112 ppm (plasma alone) to 26.2 ppm at a specific input energy (SIE) of 232 J/L. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that Co sites in CoFe 2 O 4 possess a lower O 3 adsorption energy and higher charge density potential to a higher oxygen vacancy formation tendency, promoting O 3 activation. This study provides an understanding of the mechanistic basis for the rational design of efficient plasma-catalytic systems for toluene removal.

To develop biomass‑derived magnetic conductive carbon aerogels toward energy storage and electromagnetic shielding applications, magnetic conductive carbon aerogels were rationally fabricated using chitosan (CS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as raw biomass precursors via Fe 3+ coordination cross-linking, directional freeze-drying and high-temperature carbonization strategies. The effects of precursor ratio on the microscopic morphology and electrical conductivity of as-prepared aerogels were systematically explored. The results indicated that the optimized CS/CMC-50%-C aerogel possessed a large specific surface area of 458.9 m 2 ·g −1 , well-developed hierarchical porous architecture and superior graphitization degree. During high-temperature pyrolysis, in situ generated Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals together with formed Fe–C bonds successfully endowed the aerogel with favorable magnetic behavior and simultaneously reinforced the interconnection of internal conductive networks. Benefiting from the above structural and compositional merits, the resultant aerogel achieved low resistivity of 0.454 Ω·cm and maintained stable electrical conductivity and integral structural integrity after ten consecutive charge–discharge cycles. This work provided a promising route to prepare lightweight magnetic conductive biomass aerogels. Graphical abstract High-porosity precursor aerogels were prepared from Fe 3+ cross-linked biomass via directional freezing, and the subsequent carbonization yielded magnetic carbon aerogels with 3D porous structure and excellent electrical conductivity stability.

The intrinsic hydrophobicity and electronegative surface charge of polyamide (PA) membranes render them highly susceptible to organic and biological fouling, constraining their efficiency in water treatment. Here, we present a molecularly rational, coordination-driven strategy to construct electropositive PA membranes by grafting a family of betaine-derived quaternary ammonium materials (QAMs) (Bet-1N ⊕ , Bet-2N ⊕ , Bet-4N ⊕ ) via Fe 3+ -mediated interfacial coordination. The single-step-synthesized modifiers provide dense −OH, −COOH and −NMe 3 + functionalities that synergistically increase hydrophilicity, smooth surface morphology, and positive surface charge. Forward-osmosis evaluation shows significant flux enhancements of 142%, 150% and 167% for Bet-1N ⊕ , Bet-2N ⊕ , Bet-4N ⊕ membranes, respectively, relative to pristine PA membranes. Beyond permeability, the membranes, particularly the Bet-4N ⊕ variant, achieves >99% bactericidal efficacy against both E. coli and S. aureus , limits lysozyme-induced flux decline to 25% over 12 h, and recovers 88% of initial flux after hydraulic cleaning (vs. 54% decline and 61% recovery for pristine PA). Mechanistic analysis reveals that a sterically and electrostatically selective Fe-QAM interphase underpins these antifouling advantages. This work establishes a facile and eco-friendly approach for constructing high-performance antifouling membranes, offering broad potential for sustainable water treatment applications.

Phenolic pollutants, originating from petrochemical production, dyeing and domestic wastewater, are among the most persistent and toxic organic contaminants in aquatic systems. Their structural diversity and similar physicochemical properties often lead to overlapping signals in traditional detection methods, hindering accurate identification and quantification in real-world samples. Conventional spectroscopic, electrochemical, and colorimetric techniques offer fast response and high sensitivity but often struggle to distinguish structurally similar phenolics in complex mixtures. Therefore, developing sensing strategies that generate rich feature information and enable multidimensional recognition have become increasingly essential. Herein, we developed a fingerprinting sensing strategy based on an ultralow-loading Fe–Mo double-atomic site catalyst (DAC) coupled with H 2 O 2 and TMB. Compared with isolated Fe or Mo single-atomic sites, the Fe–Mo DAC exhibited markedly enhanced peroxidase-like activity, which is attributed to Mo-induced modulation of the electronic structure and oxidation state of Fe centers. This catalytic synergy enables broad detection ranges, high sensitivity, and ultralow limits of detection (LOD, 0.76 μM) for five representative phenolic compounds and their binary mixtures. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the variation in LOD is governed by the phenols’ intrinsic oxidation energy barriers and reducing abilities. By integrating multiple linear and nonlinear spectral descriptors into a four-dimensional feature matrix, followed by PCA and LDA, the system achieved accurate high-dimensional discrimination of phenolic species. This work offers a rapid, sensitive, and robust method for identifying phenolic pollutants, enabling mixture discrimination, source tracing, and environmental monitoring. The approach also provides a generalizable framework for expanding nanozyme-based sensing toward complex chemical mixtures.
